I still rank Wood-Dale with three stars. Two days ago I called to see if they had any flank meat. The butcher said he did so I ordered one which I explained I wanted rolled into pinwheel steaks. He said he would have it ready for me the next morning by 9 AM. When I arrived the next morning about 9:30 AM the order was not filled but that was OK because it only takes a couple of minutes to prepare. They brought one out of the cooler, trimmed a little fat off and rolled it tightly. It made five pinwheels of normal size and one smaller. I never thought to check the price because in the past I had always been treated fairly at Wood Dale. Today I checked the price on the package and found I had been charged $28.18 for 1 pound of meat. It is normal to weigh the meat prior to trimming and charge for it that way but there was very little trimming that was necessary on this piece of meat. Flank is extremely lean and requires very little trimming. I called the store and explained to one of the butchers what had happened. He apologized and told me to come in for a partial refund. He also told me the normal price for flank was $11.99 a pound. The per pound price they originally charged me was $28.18. I was refunded $14. I felt it was better to let the disparity go as it wasn’t worth the hassle. A word to the wise when dealing with Wood Dale. Check the per pound price before making your purchase. I know I will from now on.

Salam’s Market & Deli – Menu with Prices – 616 S Forest Ave, Tempe

I went here to buy a couple things and ended up getting some baklava as well. The sign said $8.99 per pound or $1.99 per piece. The man who runs the place told me there is about 6 pieces per pound so I decided to go with that. He said that it’s cheaper going with the pound rather than buying piece by piece. After picking out my 6 pieces I did some more shopping. When I came back to pay he told me the baklava costs $13 and some change. I asked him how it came out to that price and he said it ended up being a pound & a half. I never saw him weigh it. The price he charged me was even more than the individual price. He’s not the nicest guy to deal with and he’s the only person I’ve ever seen running the store. The baklava isn’t that great to want to come back for it. There are many shops in the same area to go to that won’t rip you off. I won’t be back.

Willowside Meats – Menu with Prices – 3421 Guerneville Rd, Santa Rosa

I’ve used them a few times for processing of both wild game and farm raised animals. Their cut and wrap technique is fantastic, and the meat always tastes great. My problem, and it’s occurred every time I’ve been there, is that Don will flat out lie to you, and add in BS charges, after giving you a verbal quote. I’ve been charged just under 4 dollars a pound processsing for two wild pigs I brought in, and have had extra charges of 50-80% of the total quoted price tacked on when I come to pick up the meat. Calling ahead to get a quote from Don over the phone, AND verifying the quoted per pound price out the door when I dropped off the meat, I felt confident that I wouldn’t get screwed again. Sure as anything, I go to pick up the meat, and they tacked on a charge that was nearly 75% of the total cost of processing, which I specifically had asked about before hand, and which Don had told me he would not charge. Once they have your meat, you’re screwed and they can embezzle your money, as the only way you can have meat returned is by paying their fee. Don’t be a dishonest thief, and tell me up front that you’re going to charge me a nearly dollar per pound fee to freeze my meat…but don’t lie and steal.

Magnani Poultry Menu with Prices 1576 Hopkins St, Berkeley

I’ve recently moved to this neighborhood with no expectations. I’ve appreciated the fact that this Hopkins strip consists of small local businesses, which I whole heartedly love and support, but I must say that this shop solely survives on it’s fair prices of meat. I’ve been here several times now and have received the same experience each time- not memorable. The only reason I continue to buy meat here is because of the prices. Chicken thighs are cheaper than Trader Joe’s. In addition, I live down the street from here. The last few times my partner went and asked for them to trim the fat off, they simply packaged the meat without acknowledgment of the question. I went yesterday and asked the same to see if my experience would be different. I asked how much the thighs were and the person told me $3.99. I asked for 2 pounds. Right before they wrapped it up, I asked for them to trim the fat off. The guy looked at me annoyed, dumped the meat on the counter, and did a half-ass job at trimming. He handed me the package and charged me an extra dollar per pound. First off, this is a meat shop. A butcher! It’s your job to cut meat how a customer asks! Not to mention that on their website, it literally says, “has an in-house butcher who cuts the meat to customer specifications”. To conclude, the only great thing about this place, is the fair prices and convenience. Otherwise, I’d never come back here. Hoping the owners will care enough to check their Yelp and Google reviews and make a positive change to their business.

Dale’s Fried Pies – Menu with Prices – 921 N Central St, Knoxville

Dale’s fried pies are nothing short of amazing. Every flavor, both sweet and savory, has been outstanding. If you are lucky enough to be in Knoxville, I cannot recommend these enough – they are a “must try.” One tip though: since the pies are fried/baked, they seem to be at their very best when they are fresh (although note that they are good all the time), and there is nothing that compares to the magic of biting into one of these early on a Saturday morning. Also, Dale herself is extremely nice and personable. The pie cart (and now truck, I believe) is extremely cute, and I’m looking forward to visiting Knoxville again just for fried pies. For those who want to give it a try, Dale is usually at the Wed. and Sat. downtown markets, and she also does custom catering for special events. Highly recommended ?

AA Meats, Inc – Menu with Prices – 5116 111th St SW, Tacoma

The meat wasn’t better here and it was 3 times higher than anywhere else. I called in the morning for a price on beef shoulder and was given what I thought was a good price so I rushed down to purchase it knowing I was going to have several people over. When I arrived the guy said the price was NOT what was quoted on the phone and they couldn’t honor it! After speaking with the manager he reiterated they would not honor the price. Pissed off and needing the meat I paid 3 times (NO JOKE) what any other store would have charged me. What really upset me was when I purchased it I said, “this will be the only time I come in here” and they said, “that’s fine with us.” Wow! Clear lack of customer service! The quality of the meat was not higher than anywhere else it was very similar to Safeway or Fred Meyer! I fully intend to honor what I said I will not buy anything from this place again!

K Heeps Inc Menu with Prices 5239 Tilghman St, Allentown

I recently started going to K Heeps for my meats. I asked a lot of questions and was cheerfully answered by their staff. You can save a bunch of money here. I bought 20 pounds of chuck roast and payed $2.00 a pound less that the supermarket I regularly shop at. They have a carnivore club card that gives you $5 credit on future purchases, for every $100 you spend. I cure my own bacon and was able to get whole pork bellies here at a really good price. Even after trimming and water loss from curing, my bacon will only be costing about $3.25 a pound. The meat is quality too. Just call, order, then go pick up. Super easy. UPDATE: Heeps is a wholesale distributer, but they are open to the public also. If you ask one of the employees, they will get you a packet that lists all the items available. This is not a little hometown butcher shop. If you take the time to explore their 26 page list of items, you will find all kinds of beef, pork, turkey and chicken, veal, seafood and tons of non meat items. You can buy a single steak or you can buy bulk and they will cut your order for you. At thanksgiving, you can also order their made in-house turduckens. We did one last thanksgiving and the family loved it.

Texas Donuts – Menu with Prices – 18776 US-69, Tyler

Be careful your charged correctly. Came back because I was missing items and they told me I wasn’t charged for them. They proceeded to total what I had taken and could not get it to replicate prior price. March 6 2016 once again was overcharged and had to call them out on it. Stayed in store to double check my order. It’s one thing if it’s a mistake but it obviously happens a lot at this place and for some reason always in their favor

Pachamama Coffee – Menu with Prices – 919 20th St, Sacramento

I love this coffee and buy it regularly; however, I have one issue with the pricing of whole beans. The printed public price sheet states that decaf French is $16/lb and the French is $15/lb. I always purchase a 1/2 lb of each and have them mixed together. When I pay, I am charged $16.50, which is $1.00 more than what I believe I should be charged according to the price sheet. When I discussed this with the a very nice employee, I was told that I was charged what the computer says is the correct amount even though the printed price sheet is shows a lesser price. I know itâ??s only a dollar, but They need to get their pricing (computer and printed) coordinated.

Full Moon Bar-B-Que Menu with Prices 5988 N Chalkville Rd, Birmingham

My husband and I went through the drive-thru to get a pound of pork and a pound of chicken. We sat in line for a good 20 minutes before placing our order. Once we finally got to the window, the typical millennial working it, completely ignored us. I saw our boxes of meat sitting right by the cash register as soon as I pulled up. I watched the millennial make 6 HUGE drinks before even coming to the window. The drinks were obviously for someone behind us, as we only ordered meat. Once he came finally to the window, I asked him if that was our meat. He said no. He then took the boxes and sat them behind the register, as to hide them from me while he ran my card. After another 10 minutes of him making more drinks, he picked up the boxes and handed them to me. I called him out and asked him why he would do such a thing. Of course he had no response except for the normal deranged look that all millennials have, waiting on ole’ Bernie to come rescue them from their tree hugging lives. I even asked to speak to the manager only to see that she had the same look on her face as well. No apology, no “We hope you come back, no “screw you”, no nothing! To top it off, the meat was dry as a bone and had no real BBQ smoke flavor at all. I can make that in my crock pot! This place is joke! I will never be back. Jim ‘N Nick’s is MUCH better and ALL their food is homemade with TONS of BBQ flavor. Save yourself the time and frustration and go to Jim ‘N Nick’s!

Sparrow Meat Market Menu with Prices 407 N 5th Ave, Ann Arbor

I’ve always loved sparrow for high quality meat despite slightly higher prices, but they just recently they did me wrong. I’ve bought skin on pork belly for a long time from Sparrow, i believe it usually arrives on Monday and they sell it for 1.99 a pound. I showed up today to get some and it was 3.99. After asking a worker why they marked it up he told me it was always that price… which I know isn’t true. However, I care more about quality than price (why I’m shopping at sparrow in the first place) so i went on to buy my skin on pork belly as I planned. When I got home, I found out the butcher had just cut off the very top lean layer of the belly with the skin, and left the rest of it to be sold as pork belly w/o skin. Let me rephrase that, my pork belly I purchased had no fat, none, it looked like a tenderloin. I am confused what I should do with this very lean belly. This is not the way that sparrow used to serve their skin on pork belly. I bought a two pound section 10 days ago and it was a nice fatty pork belly with the skin on; it was also $2 a pound, but that’s not the point. Long story short I am very disappointed in the product I purchased from Sparrow today.

Quoc Bao Bakery – Menu with Prices – 3419 W Walnut St #104, Garland

This place is so amazing that I went two days in a row, and I live 30 minutes away so that’s saying a lot! What really stole my heart was their Vietnamese coffee. For $3 (the sign says $2.75), you’ll get a tall cup of iced deliciousness that even Starbucks can’t replicate. Seriously the best Vietnamese coffee I’ve ever had and that’s coming from someone that grew up on Vietnamese coffee. Now on to the banh mi. I’ve definitely had a lot of banh mi in my lifetime, but I will say that the sandwiches from Quoc Bao are one of my top favorites due to the generosity of the meat portions, flavor, and the pricing! For less than $15, my boyfriend and I got 4 sandwiches and one iced coffee. (On a previous visit we also had Thai tea but I didn’t think it was that impressive, definitely go for the coffee). The bakery has a buy 3 get 1 free deal for the sandwiches so we took advantage of that offer. We ordered the rolled ham, meatball, grilled chicken, and roasted pork. All were delicious and had great flavor. The bread was crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and the meat was perfectly seasoned. If I were to rank them, I would say the rolled ham was my favorite because it’s reminiscent of my childhood, second favorite would be the roasted pork, third would be the grilled chicken, and least favorite would be the meatball. The meatball sandwich wasn’t really filled with meatballs, but rather chunks of ground pork instead of uniform meatballs. The rolled ham didn’t have as much meat as the other sandwiches but the flavor profile makes up for the lack of meat. The other sandwiches had large portions of meat packed with great flavor, which I appreciate. I recommend ordering ahead of time by phone as the bakery is always packed and cranking out orders, so it will definitely reduce waitintime. When you place an order, it’s easier to order by the menu number than the name of the sandwich (ex: say you’d like a #1 instead of saying rolled ham). It will make the ordering process so much smoother. I also recommend asking for the veggies on the side to avoid making your bread soggy. I called to put in my order and they told me it would be a 20-25 minute wait so I’m glad I called beforehand. If this is your first time trying Banh mi, I recommend either the roasted pork or the grilled chicken for sure! You won’t be disappointed.

The Gin Room – Menu with Prices – 3200 S Grand Blvd, St. Louis

My mom and I came here after dinner at The King and I last Saturday night. We had dressed up sort of “spooky” but not quite costumed for Halloweekend and wanted to go somewhere out and about and have some drinks, but not end up part of a huge party crowd. I am a gin lover and have been wanting to try this place since before I moved to St. Louis last January, and my only regret about my visit was that I hadn’t drank here long ago and kept coming back. When we entered there were a few diners but no one at the bar – apparently there was a huge event in the CWE that night so South Grand was pretty quiet. We were immediately greeted and given (huge, extensive) menus by bartender Dale. After perusing the menu and the huge wall of hundreds of gins behind the bar for a few minutes we had some questions, which Dale was happy to answer. He was knowledgeable and taught us about the gins on the menu without being pedantic, snobby, or condescending (attitudes that are unfortunately the norm in my experiences talking with more knowledgeable craft spirits connoisseurs). We tasted several gins, some to decide what to have in our drinks and some because the bottle looked interesting or the gin was unique and weird. Dale asked about our favorite gins and cocktails and made recommendations from there. I ended up trying a hibiscus G&T with a gin I don’t remember (awesome), a Hendricks smash which included some of my favorite cocktail flavors from real ingredients – basil and cucumber (even awesomer), and a Collins made with Uncle Val’s peppered gin which I was skeptical of before tasting but I turned out really enamored with it (also awesome). The cocktails, the gins, and the customer service and bartending skills courtesy Dale were all excellent. The drinks weren’t cheap but not hideously expensive, and the experience was totally worth the price. I am certain I will be returning regularly.
