Mariscos Culiacon is a casual Mexican Seafood Restaurant with alcohol located in an older strip mall in Glendale. This isn’t a fancy place. Culiacan is a city in northwest Mexico in the state of Sinaloa so it seems they serve Sinaloa Style Mexican Food. Most of the fish dishes they offer have shrimp, octopus and tilapia in them. We sat ourselves and were given menus, complimentary chips, salsa AND small cups of seafood based vegetable soup. The soup was fresh made and developed with flavors. I was going to order the whole red snapper in hot sauce but was told they only had tilapia so I went with Veracruzana Style Tilapia. The tilapia seemed very fresh and was flaky, meaty and mild. They seared it up nice and one side was crispy. The sauce seemed like it was made with mild chili and there were bell peppers and onions on it. My plate also came with vegetable studded white rice, refried beans, salad garnish and hot steamy fresh tortillas. My husband had the Marinero Relleno. He received a foil envelope PACKED with LOTS of seafood with tomatoes, bell peppers, onions and CHEESE. He got as much tilapia as I got, shrimp and octopus. The shrimp and tilapia were prepared well but octopus was a little chewy. He got the same sides I got rice, beans, salad garnish and tortillas. Our server was very pleasant. Worth a trip if you happen to be in the area 3.75 stars

Thai Hub Street Food – Menu with Prices – 3720 Pacific Coast Hwy, Torrance

Torrance Food Crawl #384 ThaiHub has taken over the space previously occupied by Pieology. The menu is not so much a formal presentation of Thai food as a casual collection of presumably street food commonly found in Thailand. The Cashew Nut Chicken dish mixed chicken, red peppers, onions, chilis, and cashew nuts. On the side was some white rice with a fried egg on top. The chicken was well done, to the point of becoming almost too hard or chewy; a sweet good taste, just on the chewy side. The vegetables were all fresh. I had asked for an average spice level but probably should have asked for it to be a little spicier. The rice was average, as was the fried egg. The Tom Yum Koong soup was a lemongrass soup with shrimp, oyster, and shrimp paste. Nice tasting, with nice flavors of seafood. A better soup was the Milky Seafood Tom Yum, also a lemongrass soup with scallops, fish, squid, mussels, and shrimp. The soup came in a large portion that two people could comfortably ladle out to themselves. With a higher spice level, I liked this soup tremendously. Great tasting with a nice aftertaste. When it comes to appetizers I’ve tried the Vegetable Egg Roll, a typical egg roll with cabbage and carrots, served almost scaldingly hot, with a sweet dipping sauce. Better were the Crispy Rolls which had crab, pork, and shrimp wrapped in rice paper, lightly fried, and very tasty. Served cold, I’ve also had the Fresh Shrimp Rolls which were nicely crunchy, with fresh lettuce and carrots and a shrimp covered with a thin rice wrapping. There’s a nice collection of about a half dozen Thai condiments over on the side, though some of them run low towards the end of the day (or maybe there was a run on them by groups of people before I was there). Thai Hub has a large interior space with over a dozen tables inside so seating shouldn’t be a problem.

Mariscos El Muchacho Alegre Menu with Prices 3113 Peoria St, Aurora

I’ve never had the privilege of posting such an early review of a restaurant on Yelp. This will be the one I got to say that I found first. So right up front, this is not what most would think of as traditional Mexican food in that, it isn’t dumbed down plates of various tortillas and meats covered in cheese and sauce. They don’t have beans on the menu. This is really a regional restaurant with the menu being driven by the cuisine of the Sinaloa region of Mexico, which is why it is virtually all seafood. And it is incredible! The place is neatly decorated and clean. Service was first class. Good selection of beers and tequila. I had their torre Culichi. Insane! Deep, complex flavors to go with delicate and perfectly executed sea fare like scallops, prawns and octopus. Looking forward to exploring more of the menu. New favorite, can’t miss spot in Denver!

Poké Bar at Avalon Menu with Prices 2685 Old Milton Pkwy Suite 140, Alpharetta

I’m new to the Poke scene. I’ve been to this location a few times with friends. My Friends absolutely love it. I’m still on the fence. On my first visit, I wasn’t sure what Poke even was. I just kept seeing Poke restaurants popping up all over town and figured I have to check this out. In my opinion, if you love cold seafood salads, this is the place for you! It’s basically a “build your own seafood salad or seafood rice bowl”. Salmon, octopus, crab and shrimp are a few of the toppings. You can add some additional vegetable toppings as well as sauces. They offer several size bowls. For me, I’m not a fan of cold seafood, so i was bummed to find out that there’s no way to heat the seafood. Hot seafood with rice and veggies sound great to me, but unfortunately it’s served cold. On my second visit, my friend told me that the now offered hot proteins. I saw the sign advertising that. I believe it mentions beef, pork and chicken. I was psyched to give the hot chicken a try. I ordered a hot chicken rice bowl and was quickly told they don’t have hot chicken. I pointed to the sign, he said well the chicken starts hot and then we chill it and it’s offered cold. Bummer!!! Personally I think they should change the sign. I tried the hot beef over rice. I asked the employee to recommend a sauce. Honestly he spoke very quickly and I don’t recall what I agreed too. I wish I would have requested no sauce. I liked the taste of the beef and rice but the sauce was over powering. I would recommend additional vegetable toppings. In addition, when customers ask for water they offer a water machine that has lukewarm water with added cucumbers or oranges. Next time I’ll ask if a cup of plain ice water can be given. At about $10 for a small bowl of beef and rice, it’s a little pricey in my opinion. My friends still dig this place, so I’m sure I’ll be there again trying to find something hot and tasty.

La Casa De Marcos Mexican Food – Menu with Prices – 714 912-4488, 2501 N Grand Ave, Santa Ana

Have you ever had hand made tortillas? Any Mexican dish without the right tortillas isn’t as tasty but, hand made tortillas is where it’s at. La Casa de Marcos has so much to choose from but today we had shrimp tacos and a wet green sauce burrito. The shrimp tacos are served on a soft hand made corn tortilla lettuce, tomatoes and, chipotle sauce. (It’s a little on the spicy side ask for it on the side) The green wet burrito was asada with rice and beans and the green sauce that topped it was mild not spicy they top the burrito with cheese, onion and cilantro. I always ask for sparkling water but, today I had the option to have regular or, prepared. The waitress brought over a beer mug with my sparkling water and it had fresh squeezed limes and a little rim of salt. Delicious! Great spot for lunch today.

Kimbap Paradise – Menu with Prices – 1585 Sepulveda Blvd H, Torrance

This is a small mom and pop type restaurant. I had the spicy seafood noodle soup as mild as they would make it for me and the marinated beef with veggies kimbap to go. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of seafood that came with the dish. There was almost half a crab in there! Shrimp, octopus and mussels as well. My tolerance for spicy food is quite low so even though, supposedly, this was mild I found it spicy. This was more than what I’d be able to finish on my own. I saw a review that said the dishes are good portions for sharing and I wish I knew that before ordering. My friend and I each ordered something when we really could’ve just shared. I had the kimbap as part of breakfast the next morning and it was great. It was appetizing and having some of the radish in-between was refreshing and provided a nice crunch factor. Not to mention that there was a lot and was saved to enjoy later.

Taqueria La Patrona – Menu with Prices – 1153 Lynnhaven Pkwy, Virginia Beach

Taqueria La Patrona is a new and ambitious Mexican restaurant that opened in April of this year. The owners are members of the Lopez family who helped launch the local Plaza Azteca chain over 20 years ago. Formerly a Captain D’s, it is stationed next to a Jack Rabbit Self Storage facility, close to the intersection with Holland Road. The signage from the roadside catches your eye first. The exterior of the building is a bit drab and nondescript. The interior sports a more light and lively decor, with tiles and upholstery emanating soothing blue tones and with paintings devoted to a Mexican film star and artist. Their cuisine is more lively as well with an extensive menu that combines both the modern and traditional. The take home menu in front of me is 8 pages long. In addition to the standard Tex-Mex and American-Mexican fare, the owners have introduced some authentic dishes from their home town in the Jalisco region of western Mexico. Their meals are served with complimentary chips, a traditional red dipping sauce, and the locally famous white sauce that originated from one of the first Mexican restaurants in Virginia Beach. A rack of various commercial hot sauces is served as well. The traditional white sauce is made from a base of Miracle Whip, garlic. peppers, and cumin. I first had it many years ago and used to think it was for wimps. It was too mild for me. Since coming here, I have grown to enjoy its cool and creamy contrast to the spicier salsas my hot tooth craves. The flavor of the cumin comes through nicely. I have enjoyed the following dishes so far: CHORIZO TACOS: In addition to Chorizo, a Mexican style sausage, a few other taco choices include Lengua, Suadero, Tripa, Carnitas, Pastor, Chicharron, and Costilla Al Vapor. These are authentic Mexican style street tacos, and I ordered three of them, priced very reasonably at $2.50 each. There were served in corn masa tortillas that are house made daily and were filled with onions and cilantro. They were served in a basket with a roasted jalapeno and scallion for a more traditional and appealing presentation. A side of boiled beans and a rack with four different salsas come with their tacos. The corn masa tortillas were soft, delicate, and delicious, exhibiting a distinctively rich corn taste. The taste of the Chorizo came through with a deep flavor profile, accented with hints of garlic and smoked paprika. If I could tweak one detail for its presentation, I would replace the shiny foil paper that lined the basket with a more light absorbent paper. The foil paper was a bit harsh on my eyes, but I didn’t take off for it. My Rating: 5 Stars. CAMPECHANO: A Mix of Shrimp and Octopus in a Ketchup Based Sauce with onions, Celery, Cucumber, Jalapeno, and Avocado. Served with tostadas and Salsaditas, a brand of a Mexican style soda cracker, This is a seafood cocktail dish that originated from Campeche, a coastal state located in Southeast Mexico. The flavors of the mix scored with a powerfully delicious flavor profile. If I could tweak the presentation of this dish just a bit, I would love to see one of the octopus pieces, with its tentacles and suction cups showing, lined along the rim with the shrimp instead of buried inside. My Rating: 5 Stars. AGUACHILE: Marinated Shrimp Served in Your Choice of Either a Rojo Sauce or a spicier Verde Sauce with Onions and Cucumbers. The translation for “Aguachile” is “chile water.” Served in a stone bowl, this is a shrimp ceviche dish that is served cold and originated from Sinaloa, a free and sovereign state in western Mexico. I chose the spicy Verde Sauce, made with a mix of jalapenos and limes, and which was off the charts delicious with a spice level that made my tooth sing. Traditional versions of this dish also include Avocado, which I did not detect from their version and felt was missing. I also would have liked at least a couple more shrimp in the mix. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. MOLCAJETE: A Volcanic Stone Bowl with Grilled Chicken, Steak, Shrimp, Chor

Danny Boy’s Deli – Menu with Prices – 664 E St, Chula Vista

Well done Senoras y Senoritas who made my breakfast the day I visited. I had the huevos a Mexicana with ham and Serrano peppers with a side of red chilaquilas and refried beans, not to mention some warm corn tortillas. The meal was only about $8. I have to say, everything on my plate, including the salsas and hot sauces were delicious. The eggs were well scrambled and seasoned. The scramble came with a very good amount of savory ham, chopped onions, peppers, and tomatoes. The red chilaquiles were fantastic! I would of ordered a plate full of them with a couple of fried eggs on top if I knew they were so good. The tortillas were crisp and infused with a terrific slightly but flavorful robust red sauce. The Cotija cheese, cream, and pickled red onions that sat on top of them were great. Great eats indeed. The refried beans were very well made, creamy, and seasoned just right. I used the warm corn tortillas to not only eat the beans with, but to make breakfast tacos with the scramble. The ladies who work here are all very nice and cook some mighty tasty Mexican eats.

Kainan Sa Laguna – Menu with Prices – 909 W Spring Creek Pkwy ste 450, Plano

Finally! I found a pretty good Filipino spot in the area. In my visit, I picked up two laguna bowls (two enteees + rice) plus pancit, lumpia, and halo halo. I did this because I didn’t know of the buffet, and my fiancé was at home. I should have went for the buffet, because we would have gotten to try more foods! Rookie mistake. I’m definitely coming back for the buffet soon. The food! My selections included calderetta (beef and vegetable stew in red sauce), beefsteak with onions, pork sinigang (tamarind soup), and this tilapia garlic tomato onion dish. Along with the rice, pancit, and lumpia, the whole meal was excellent. Also all of these items are included in the buffet! The buffet also includes items like chicken tinola, ukoy, and more. There must have been 15 items in total. They also have Filipino spaghetti! I love Filipino spaghetti! My fiancé and I loved all of the food. It brought us back, especially since we don’t have much Filipino food nowadays. We also enjoyed the halo halo very much. It came with a good variety of jellies and beans, as well as crispy rice and flan! I omitted the ice cream because I wanted to save $1.50 and I had Blue Bell at home, haha. Overall, this was a great place to eat. I’d definitely come back again for Filipino food. I want to take my mom here when she visits! Come for the buffet! Enjoy.

Seydi?s Pupuseria & Grill – Menu with Prices – 2625 E Greenway Pkwy suite 107, Phoenix

Seydi’s Pupuseria & Grill is a casual order at the counter Salvandorian Restaurant that specializes in the pupusa (stuffed flatbread cheese/vegetable and cheese/meat). They are located in a strip mall in North Phoenix. They also offer Salvadorian style breakfast (tamale, rice, beans, plantains, eggs, burritos), appetizers, combination plates and around a dozen kinds of pupusas. The food is mostly fresh prepared to order so it takes around 15 minutes or more for your order. We ordered, paid and sat ourselves and in about 15 minutes we had two enormous plates to share. We started with steak with two pupusas…..The pupusas were OUTRAGEOUSLY CRAZY CRAZY GOOD! and were also much larger than we were expecting. They are like a super great grilled cheese sandwich but much tastier. They are basically masa pancakes with cheesy crisp ends and are filled with LOTS of yummy melty mild cheese and whatever filling you pick. We picked the wildflower and the jalapeño…..(both were really good but GET THE JALAPEÑO!). They give you a very sharp tasting but also spicy slaw and really flavorful chili sauce to dress things up. The steak was a little chewy but we really loved the pupusas. ($9.50) The other plate we shared was the fried tilapia ($11.99) It was a WHOLE fried fish and was so tender and flaky. The meat just fell off the bones. It came with tasty studded rice, a fried jalapeño, flavorful beans and tasty hand made corn tortillas. The person that took our order was friendly and checked on us too. What a treat! This is a place that you would want to try!

Los Arbolitos De Cajeme Phoenix Az – Menu with Prices – 3508 W Peoria Ave, Phoenix

First time trying new place that opened where La Parilla used to be. The chips were ok but not made in house & comes with a trio of limes and 2 sauces, but no choice if you want mild. We skipped appetizers & ordered the shrimp special, the grilled salmon & stuffed shrimp with crab. The dinners are a la carte & you have a choice of sides. We ordered a side of guacamole, too which cost $8.00. The grilled salmon came with no flavor and mostly cold or uncooked sides of mashed potatoes (a tiny little condiment dish worth). This was mostly inedible and they had to warm it up and bring it back. The shrimp special was swimming in green sauce and had a funny taste. It was with cheese and came with tortillas in a nice cloth warmer. The sides were rice which was plain Spanish rice with very little flavor and came lukewarm. The French fries were ok and crispy. The stuffed shrimp “cordon blue” was alright but the tarter sauce was awful. This dish came with western style garlic toast and another round of tortillas in a warmer. The ice tea was sweetened a little and refilled often $3.00 each. The coffee is $4.00 for one cup and 1 refill. The guacamole was mashed avocado with a tiny garnish of chopped tomato and onion & since we had lime at the table we squeezed it on. Portions of the entree were adequate and presentation was fair. The waitress tried to be accommodating but wasn’t able to help us. There were no vegetarian or vegan choices (which forced one of us to eat the shrimp or pay big $$ for a house salad and a side of cold rice). The prices were an insane rip off (just under $80 for 3 people) $18 an entree per person. The atmosphere is super trendy with a sports bar feel. If you you like to drink and eat seafood then this might be right for you. In our opinion, the food is not very good and they are way overpriced for the meals. The management did not care that we were unhappy and the guy at the door (who we gave an earful to) said “well that’s how it’s done in Mexico.” Not only insulting but a stupid response as we have traveled extensively & eaten all over Mexico. We rate one star or less and wouldn’t recommend this crappy restaurant to all our friends who enjoy eating out. It’s not really a family restaurant although there were some children there. It’s not a warm, inviting place. I’ve never been to a restaurant where they didn’t want to accommodate the customers. We won’t be going back. We’ll be watching this one – in a neighborhood that can’t support this kind of upscale pricing – and say goodbye when it fails.

Wanfu Buffet – Menu with Prices – 10676 Colonial Blvd, Fort Myers

I stopped in for lunch last week. I generally go to buffets for the variety, not the quantity, because I get filled up fast. This was my first visit to this fairly new restaurant. Usually the first thing I do is get some egg drop soup, and peel & eat shrimp. When I went to the soup area, I noticed they had seafood soup, which you don’t normally see at buffets. I tried that, and it was very good. The shrimp was also plump & fresh, and the cocktail sauce was very tasty. Next I got a couple of crab rangoons, krab salad, sushi, a little lo mein & fried rice, and sampled some of the hot dishes. Everything was good. I was getting full now because of the rice, so I got a Chinese donut and what we used to call a “dixie cup” of strawberry ice cream. I liked everything I had, although I thought the price ($10.99?) was a little steep for lunch, but I imagine most people would probably eat more than I did. I’d like to come back for dinner sometime, I believe they have oysters then.

Nadima?s Sushi & Mongolian Express – Menu with Prices – 23211 Hawthorne Blvd Unit 100, Torrance

Torrance Food Crawl #380 Nadima’s Sushi and Coffee is located at the intersection of Hawthorne & Lomita, tucked around the corner from the Subway sandwich shop. The menu is primarily oriented towards sushi and sushi rolls, though there are some Mongolian style dishes and ice cream to choose from. The Mountain Roll (http://bit.ly/2OjbdOL) contained rice, crab, tuna, salmon, avocado, and tuna & eel sauces. It was cut into four diagonal pieces, placed together to look like a small mountain. Cute touch. The fish was very fresh, and the sauces added a nice mild spice flavor. Holding the roll together was a very thin, almost transparent, soy paper wrap. On the side was some cabbage-based salad, ginger, wasabi, and a couple of orange slices for a post-meal refresher. Very good. At one of my visits here, I got a free tuna and vegetable salad (http://bit.ly/2K0bDnN), very nice. Both times I’ve been here, once sitting inside and the other for takeout, they offered some miso soup (http://bit.ly/2Y1pcNC); they probably were identical the two times I was here but for whatever reason, I better liked the one I received the first time, perhaps because they provided more soup when I was eating there. The Mixed Sushi (http://bit.ly/2MlxpFp) normally comes with four pieces of sushi, but mine had five, tuna, salmon, shrimp, and white fish, separated by thin lemon slices. The fish and shrimp were very fresh. The sides were the same as before, a cabbage-based salad, ginger, wasabi, and orange slices. Good. I also tried the Seaweed Salad (http://bit.ly/30STS0m), on the side. It was fresh and mild tasting. Inside there are a few tables where you can eat if you want. The service was excellent both times, a warm and friendly environment. For takeout sushi, Nadima’s is a nice place to try out.
