Recently Fuji Bakery returned back to Bellevue opening up a kiosk storefront inside Uwajimaya next to Ellenos Greek Yogurt. With this new shop opening, Bellevue again has a Japanese bakery. It doesn’t seem like they do baking at this location, so the selection is more limited than you will find at the International District store. At this location, you will find a selection of cakes, macarons, pastries and Japanese style sandwiches at reasonable prices. Also, you can find their shokupan in the bread aisle at Uwajimaya. On a grocery shopping trip, I picked up a couple pastries to go for a Sunday morning breakfast. I noticed that Fuji is now offering malasadas, so I had to give them a try being a Hawaii native. Ordered a malasada ($1.50) and a custard bun ($2.25). I enjoyed both pastries. The malasada here is good and is the closest in taste and texture to the ones at Leonard’s in Honolulu. The only knock was that they were not fresh out of the oven and hot which is the best time to eat them. The custard bun was delicious with a nice thick cream filling inside. It is great to have a Japanese bakery again in Bellevue. I would like to see a better selection of baked goods to choose from here, but happy enough with their presence at Uwajimaya.

Neptune Bakery & Deli – Menu with Prices – 1612 John F. Kennedy Blvd, Jersey City

The Neptune Bakery is a hidden Jersey City treasure! When you walk in, it’s fairly unassuming seems like any other bakery or deli but they have a great variety of baked goods and pastries. I always come in for the Egg Custard, a favorite of mine growing up and getting them every so often at a Filipino Bodega on West Side. I haven’t had one since, but got to relive my childhood when I discovered Neptune Bakery about a year back. There’s not much to say about Neptune aside from the fact that they are known for their Egg Custards ($1.25 each) and all of their pastries look fresh and absolutely scrumptious. The egg custard has a flaky and chewy outside crust, with a velvety soft sweet interior with a subtle of butterscotch that’s perfectly heated on the top. The best part is that they are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so you can stop in literally any time. If you haven’t visited yet, pop by for an egg custard or two!

Hamada Ya Bakery – Menu with Prices – 665 Paularino Ave, Costa Mesa

Love this quaint and authentic Japanese bakery near the cash registers of Mitsuwa Marketplace! The prices are very reasonable and compare to prices I’ve seen in Japan. The older women who run the shop are always sweet and the bakery even accepts card! They have quality pastries ranging from sweet (but never too sweet) to savory, as well as bread for everyday use. The Green Tea Cornet is absolute perfection. It’s basically a cream-filled croissant with the perfect custard-to-bread ratio. The matcha custard has a bold and rich tea flavor but isn’t overly sweet, so you don’t feel guilty about eating one (or three like me…). You can tell that they use a high quality matcha powder because of its vibrant green color; any matcha that is dull or almost brownish in color is of lesser quality. The cornet itself is flaky and brittle on the outside and light and airy on the inside. The matcha powder on top adds a slightly bitter kick to balance out the sweet custard. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water… I’ve also tried their Cream Puffs, Strawberry Cream Cheese Danish, and Chocolate Croissant. I have yet to try their savory items but next time I’ll order the Curry Donut! They also have sliced Japanese white bread, which is thicker, softer, and more pillowy than overprocessed American white bread. It’s perfect with honey drizzled over it for breakfast and takes me back to my breakfasts in Tokyo. Also, I came here after 8 PM on a Friday night and they were still open until Mitsuwa’s closing time at 9 PM, despite what Yelp’s hours say!

Arai Pastry – Menu with Prices – 1335 W University Dr, Tempe

This is an absolutely adorable Japanese bakery! I’ve been here a couple of times and the atmosphere is so classy and welcoming all at the same time. The workers here are so nice and very friendly. They have an array of buns, cakes, and pastries available that are sweet, but not too sweet, a perfect representative of Asian pastries. Additionally, all of the products are …. gorgeous, elegant, cute, all in one. The curry buns are to die for and they have a microwave to warm up the buns if they aren’t already fresh. The custard buns are good and so are the Anpan. I’ve tried the coffee/chocolate cake and the strawberry cream cake. I definitely prefer the strawberry cream but both are good. The cake, in all aspects, is not dense and overly sweet like American cake, so I think it’s amazing.

SomiSomi Soft Serve & Taiyaki – Menu with Prices – 9292 Warren Pkwy Suite 260, Frisco

My friend and I have been waiting for this location to open for almost a year now! She first introduced it to me in SoCal, and we were so excited to see that a location was opening in the DFW area! We were both really eager to have a place with amazing black sesame soft serve. We came on opening weekend after dinner, and there was a huge line. We agreed that the inside of the place was well-designed because there was minimal seating and more stand-up bars to eat on so that there was more space for people to line up. They were very efficient in taking and cranking out orders, and I think we ended up waiting about 20 minutes for a 30+ person line. I ordered the upside-down ah-boong with black sesame soft serve. It tasted just as good as the one in San Diego. The black sesame flavor was light and nutty, and the texture was so smooth. The fish pastry portion was also pretty good, but I think it started becoming too sweet for me during the last few bites. We also got samples of their custard-filled taiyaki, which were delicious as well but just way too much food for us. I just wish this place were in Dallas instead of Frisco so that I could go more often! Then I’d probably be here at least 3x a week…

Anchorhead Coffee Menu with Prices 555 110th Ave NE #101, Bellevue

Anchorhead Coffee opens in Bellevue, giving all other coffee shops in Bellevue a run for its money! I’m a fan of Anchorhead Coffee, so when I learned they were opening a Bellevue location, I knew it was gonna be my new jam. I set up a coffee meeting here and arrived early, so I could do some work with a coffee and snack in hand. On a weekday in the morning, the line was comprised of the Bellevue work crew, especially since Anchorhead is located by several tech companies, including Microsoft, in the same tower. Several people ordered their coffee to go, which worked out for me since I had plans of setting up shop at one of the tables. The space isn’t large, so if you plan to work here with a group, you may be fighting for a seat. I ordered the Nitro Mint Latte and a Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookie. The Nitro Mint Latte is made with cold brew, milk of your choice and a housemade mint syrup. It was awesome! I really liked that it was made with cold brew, giving it a less-acidic and more smooth taste. The mint was abundant, but didn’t taste artificial. I chose oat milk with my drink, which I recommend. I would happily order the nitro mint latte again. And whenever I see chocolate with sea salt I just have to have it. Something about the salty flavor bringing out the chocolate! My cookie was soft and crispy on the edges, which was yummy. Glad to have Anchorhead Coffee in downtown Bellevue…and it’s open on the weekends and stays open ’til 7pm. They serve damn good coffee, make their own syrups, including Intrigue Chocolate for the chocolate syrup (and sell their chocolate bars!), and have small bites. I have my eye on the biscuit sandwich for whenever I need breakfast. But coffee is a must here.

The Bakery of Cedar Rapids – Menu with Prices – 4719 J St SW, Cedar Rapids

I really wish I knew about The Bakery sooner! If you love pastries and tacos – this is your place! The inside of the building is purely functional with the bakery/ordering counter on one side and a small dining room on the other. The options are endless when it comes to the fresh pastries offered and all of them are an incredible value! Here’s just an example of what they have: Concha Elephant Ear Berry Turnovers Pecan rolls Giant 2lb cinnamon roll Croissant Various breads Pie Cakes They don’t have many cookie options, but have a small section of pie and cake by the slice. All of the pastries/treats ranged from $0.65-$5! But wait – there’s more! The Bakery also offers a small menu of Mexican classics including burritos and tacos all on homemade flour tortillas! You can even buy a dozen flour tortillas to take home with you (and you definitely want to do this!) I ordered two street style tacos and recommend the carnitas – they were delicious! The Bakery is a hidden gem that is not to be missed! Bring $10 and walk away with a taco lunch and a few amazing pastries!

Eterna Primavera Bakery – Menu with Prices – 2951 24th St, San Francisco

This place is great! It’s newly remodeled, clean, and there’s a sitting area if you want to enjoy your food there. They have a nice selection of Central American pastries, snacks, and full meals. We had breakfast here. We got the huevos rancheros, a veggie omelette, and the “pan con todo” to share. Both meals brought potatoes and fresh fruit salad. The huevos rancheros were fresh and served atop 2 tostadas, the sauce had a mild spiciness and was delicious. The veggie omelette was huge! My husband couldn’t finish it. We grabbed a few pastries to take home. Their pineapple empanada is stuffed with real pineapple, and the custard for their custard empanada is made there. Definitely a place you have to try!

Panaderia Tlaquepaque Menu with Prices 2300 S Chambers Rd, Aurora

Turns out this is the closest panaderia to our place, which came in handy one night when we had a craving for some pan dulce. Much to our pleasure (and no less surprise), this place was open late into the evening! The inside of the store itself is not that impressive (somewhat dark and dingy), but the selection was pan was fantastic. We of course picked up a few pieces of our old favorites (conchas, marranos, and empanadas) in addition a few new things we had never tried. The palmera was unbelievably buttery, flaky, and and crispy. We also tried cajetas (caramel empanadas), which were AMAZING. We grabbed nearly a dozen pan dulces for only a few dollars. Next time I’ll have to try their custard empanadas!

PANCHITO’S BAKERY “PANADERIA” – Menu with Prices – 9537 Q St, Omaha

We read the great reviews in the paper about this new West Omaha Mexican bakery. Our recent trip here did not disappoint. The young owner of this bakery is the son of the owner of the acclaimed South Omaha International Bakery. This bakery is every bit as good as the South Omaha legend. We came just as they were closing for the night (9pm on a Saturday) and they were more than happy to serve us. They could have easily turned us away, but instead the friendly clerk helped walk us through a great selection of pastries. We walked away with about 10 items for $5 — a bargain by today’s standards. We would have been willing to pay double for the deliciousness of these great items. With a grocery store bakery on nearly every corner in this town, this place is a refreshing alternative to the glazed and chocolate donuts typically sold in bakeries. If you’re looking for standard American bakery fare, then this place isn’t for you. If you are looking for great Mexican pastries not typically found west of 24th Street, then give this place a try. They serve a whole lot of awesome at this place.A great new addition to West Omaha and a new ‘go to’ on our bakery list. Show this place some love!

Rudys Bakery – Menu with Prices – 2038 W Roscoe St, Chicago

If you are looking for some classy, expensive, gorgeously decorated, over priced, snobby customers, music blaring type of bakery, go to Julius Meinl. Well, although this place looks sketchy from your carview window, it really is a cutest little shop inside. It has that feel that it’s been around forever, a classic bakery feel if you will. Not to say the inside is beautiful, but it’s ok. I liked that. I got a large coffee and two pastries for under 5 bucks! 5 BUCKS! Take THAT Starbucks (directly across the street from it with a usual line out the door and around the block). Their coffee is delicious. It’s a Colombian blend and very little cream and sugar are needed. You can really taste the beans roasted! The gentlemen who took my order is a very friendly man. Quiet, mysterious, but very nice. The pastries were delicious! I got a danish and something else similar to that with nuts on top. Both very good! Rich in flavor and the bread was great. I try to swing by here as much as I can before work. It’s not a crazy busy bakery with lines out the door. You’re in and out which I love. And as I was exiting the shop, I heard a little boy calling out “Grandpa, look at this!” Made me realize why I support these great mom and pop shops to begin with. He’s probably teaching his grandson how to roll dough ?

Bread & Sons – Menu with Prices – 195 Bank St, Ottawa

We were attracted by the scent of their fresh oven baked pastries just cooling off on the shelves and we had to go in to take a peak. We noticed a lot of people inside self serving and picking out the pastries they wanted into their boxes. We picked out a few pastries and cheese buns and took it to go …boy was it freshly baked and warm. I had a few already and I don’t regret it. Service : super pleasant and helpful very nice staff and they seemed to care a lot ! They explained to us which ones were popular and the different kinds of pastries ( some were savoury and some were more sweet) Ambiance: it was fun and the smell definitely wooed us in …. lots of great varieties. Overall, definitely recommend this little bakery as its a cute hidden gem and if you’re in the area and you’re looking for a quick bite of delight I totally recommend you trying this place out so delicious
