We’ve been keeping an eye on all the new openings around to what it seems to be the new hip area in Ft Lauderdale, or to be more precise, around Mass District. With so many gems popping out left and right, you kind of expect to get hit and misses. With that said, I’m sad to say American Icon was definitely not a hit for me and my companions. The decor is actually really nice, modern, hip with a pretty decent size open space, cool bar and an outdoor area as well. Lets begin with the service. It seems like our guy was overwhelmed or he might’ve been new, but he was clueless about the menu and specials so we just took a tour and went for what it was more appealing to us on the menu. On Thursday night, they have ladies night. The special is, ladies drink $5 margaritas, cosmos or wine. My wife and her girlfriend went for the Margarita(they commented it was nice on presentation, but tasted like a watered down Margarita) I ordered the More Hazy IPA which it was whatever, I was expecting more since they are a “brewery” and my friend ordered the Milkshake IPA. Not to be a snob, but bloody hell, that tasted like a regular lager and they added some blue nerds(the candy) to give it a nasty sweet flavor(avoid this beer). For appetizer we ordered the fish dip. This one was average at best, but once again the presentation was really nice. By then, our waiter seemed to be running back and forth to the table and seemed to be super busy; however there were only 2 tables with customers in the entire place. For dinner I order the G.O.A.T burger. I asked for it medium, but it came overcooked and dry. My wife ordered the Icon Burger, once again this burger was ok, not a lot of flavor but eatable. Her friend ordered the Mac and Cheese with Bacon and Truffle fries. Holy cow! crazy but they were the best truffle fries I ever had. I personally think that is sad that the best thing we had were the fries, but hey, I take that as a win. Overall this place is definitely ok if you want some average overpriced food and bad drinks(we paid $102.37 +tip). Definitely not Chok approved and I will not be going back nor will I recommend this place.

King’s Kitchen – Menu with Prices – 1235 S Central Ave, Glendale

Food: My wife and I ordered a Truffle Burger and Baja Fish Tacos, both with fries. They were absolutely excellent. The Truffle Burger was cooked as asked and tasted exquisite. There was some juicy truffle oil and you can taste that umami flavor in the burger thanks to the mushrooms. The baja fish tacos came in a pair and oh my gosh. They were gigantic. The chef did not skimp on the fish. Each taco contained two giant nuggets of fish, slaw and radish along with some sauces and a side of jalepenos. Ash, the cashier, waiter, server extraordinaire was extremely friendly. He noticed my wife and I had Games Workshop stuff and just wanted to chat with us. Not just be friendly, but he genuinely wanted to chat with us and get to know us and that’s the kind of service I’ve never received at a restaurant before. The prices of the food 100% match the quality you’re getting. It’s very delicious and they don’t skimp on anything. All love for this place. Please support your local businesses!

Ocmulgee Brewpub – Menu with Prices – 484 2nd St, Macon

I found the food to be the highlight of this brewery. The beer was just ok, thus only 3 star rating. I am a home brewer, so am particular in my beer reviews. The food was delicious! This is a gormet burger place and you must pay the extra $1 to upgrade your fries to truffle fries. Be sure to get the truffle aioli to accompany the fries. Delicious. I ordered the Sea Creature burger which is a crab and lobster burger (no beef). It was almost all meat, not bread crumb filling. I would order again! My wife ordered the Blazing Glory burger which was good (pepper jack cheese, pico de gallo, fried egg, pickled jalapeños, signature pub sauce). She had the pickled peppers served on side so she could control the heat. They have a kids menu and my daughter enjoyed he chicken nuggets and truffle fries. When it comes to beer , they have happy hour from 4-6pm where beers are HALF OFF. We happened to come at 5 so good time for a flight of samplers and a pint. The lime gose (seasonal) was good as was the High Cotton Belgian wit bier. The other beers were a bit watered down and not super flavorful. I am in love with gose beer, and even the gose was a bit to lime juice heavy and no noticeable salt, which is a key to gose. There are two brewers. I met one of the Brewers, Doug, who said he is getting ready to expand into a second brewery. Nice guy.

Out of the Box Menu with Prices 3807 Spenard Rd, Anchorage

This place does vegan, vegetarian and gluten free, but also some pretty good burgers and a huge menu of other stuff from fried chicken to fish and sandwiches. But I had the truffle butter burger and a small green salad. The burger was a nice quarter pound beef patty griddled with a nice compound truffle butter for a subtle truffle flavor. A nice amount of lettuce and tomato and some home made 1000 Island went well with it… it’s a mess to eat though and maybe not as spectacular as I was hoping. It tasted good but wasnt groundbreaking. Maybe that’s just me though. Side salad was fresh and bright with a punchy vinaigrette I actually liked it a lot. This is a pretty good place to grab lunch, but with 7 tables and 8 bar seats it could get really slammed. I’m giving the place 4 stars because while I loved the burger it didn’t blow me away as anything super special. It beats most of the higher end burger places in town, but I think kriners has the edge in That department. Still, the place is solid and offers a lot of options you can’t get in other places. I’m going to have to come back and reevaluate after getting a few more lunches.

Juicery Plus – Menu with Prices – 201 E Main St, El Paso

Came here for a late lunch one day. It is kind of hidden inside a business building but it is across the street from the coffee box. I love the style and set up as well as the vegan take on everything. The place looks very clean and modern. The first thing I say were pumpkin looking bars in the front and I knew I had to try it. It was very good! I think it was the perfect amount of pumpkin and the glaze added a good touch. I would definitely recommend getting it warmed up but I like my pastries warm. We ordered the truffle pizza and the poke bowl with salmon. The poke bowl was good. I wish it had more vegetable or something else to add to it because it was rice, tomato/vegetable mix, avocado, and the sauce. Maybe ask for something else to be added? Other than that it was very good and I was pleasantly surprised how good the salmon was. We were struggling to decide between the truffle pizza and the truffle burger (I am obsessed with truffle flavor right now haha). The waitress said that the pizza was one of her favorites so I went with that. It came out and looked very good. The red sauce has a different flavor to it. It was a little weird at first and I wasn’t sure if I liked it but it grew on me. I didn’t think it had nearly enough sauce or truffle though. I asked for a side of the garlic aioli and truffle cream to add more and that definitely helped a lot. I wouldn’t order this again personally. Maybe next time the truffle burger. I also heard that the thai raw noodles and the benedict are very good so I will be back to try more!

High Dive Bar – Menu with Prices – 508 Indianola Rd, Des Moines

I had never heard of ginos until I found it on groupon. They had a good deal of $30 for $50 so I figured why not give it a shot. My wife and I decided to go for lunch. We decided to really give the menu a spin seams it was our first trip and we had $50 to spend. I decided to try the tenderloin with fries. My wife decided to try the burger with fries. We also ordered an order of fried pickle spears. Then we ordered 2 large pizzas to go. The wait staff was very friendly and made sure our drinks were never empty and that we were happy with what we ordered. The sandwich’s and fries came out before the appetizer of the fries pickles which isn’t a big deal to us. The tenderloin is of a good size. It had a good crunchy cracker crust that reminded me of a tenderloin that I had growing up at our restaurant/gas station in the little town of delta where I grew up. It took me back for some reason which was nice. The fries are steak fries which are ok but I would rather a crunchy fry. My wife really enjoyed the burger. It’s a large burger with double patties. It had good flavor and juicy meat. My wife enjoyed her fries as she isn’t one who cares what kind of fries they are as long as they are fries. The fried pickles were hot and fresh. They were pickle spears which is always nice. They had good flavor and the breading was almost like a tempura batter which made them nice and crunchy. The pizzas that we ordered to go we got one with sausage, pepperoni, and banana peppers. The other we got just sausage and banana peppers. After getting home we decided to at least try the pizza. Wow what a treat. The pizza has a good thin crispy crust with a good hearty sauce and a good amount of cheese and toppings. I would for sure come back even if just for a pizza. I would like to try the sausage sandwich and a few other items from the menu. All in all this was a good trip.

Farmer & The Cow – Menu with Prices – 413 N Market St, Wilmington

Very good, but consistency issues. We went to Wilmington to the Ladybug festival and looked up Farmer & the Cow for dinner. The ratings were good and I liked the menu items. I ordered the TyrannoSOYus Rex sandwich with a side of truffle tots. The sandwich came as advertised and it was delicious. One of my favorite “cheese steak” sandwiches and I’ve tried many. The tots were also very good. My wife ordered the Badger Badger Mushroom Mushroom burger which she really enjoyed. The place also has a great whiskey selection and very good beer selections. The service that night was also very good. The next day we both thought about it for awhile and decided to go back again because we liked it so much. We actually ordered the exact same things, but here is where we noticed the consistency issues. The Rex sandwich came out without the slaw. I thought maybe they just put it under the protein instead of on top like the night before. The sandwich was still good so I didn’t complain. My wife also had an issue with consistency. On this second trip she decided to order the burger medium rare to get more pink. Unfortunately it came out medium just like the night before. Also, there was noticeably a lack of mushrooms. Other than those issues, we’d be back again, but they really need to address those issues.

Bless Your Heart Burgers 33rd Avenue – Menu with Prices – 5410 NE 33rd Ave, Portland

Located at the former site of Cannon’s Rib Express, Bless Your Heart Burgers (BYH) 33rd Avenue is the second location of BYH and the first location on the east side. There seems to be a lot of hype about BYH’s burgers and I can see why. I wouldn’t say its the best burger in town, but I did really enjoy my Classic Burger (with added sautéed mushrooms and bacon) last night. I love how BYH smashes their burgers to get a super crusty finish on the exterior of the burger. That char added so much flavor to the burger, and the burger was still moist too. The sautéed mushrooms added a nice textural element, though I would skip the bacon next time since it was a bit chewy and definitely low quality. Along with my burger, I also shared Chili Cheese Fries and the Down n Dirty Fries with my partner. Of the two, I’d say the Down n Dirty Fries were my favorite. Both of the fries came with this great beer cheese sauce, but I liked that the Down n Dirty Fries came with griddled onions, peppers, and mushrooms, as I felt like I needed more veggies in my meal due to the use of shredded lettuce in my burger instead of a big piece of lettuce, which is normally my preference. I thought the fries were a tad oily, but still tasty nonetheless.

Wahlburgers – Menu with Prices – 100 Robinson Centre Dr Suite 2550, Pittsburgh

The Wahlburgers in Robinson almost had a 4-Star rating from me. In fact, when I left my table it did (just barely). However, as we walked past the host stand to leave there were two employees standing around. Both of them were so busy looking at social media that they completely neglected to say “Have a nice night, thanks for coming”. In fact, they didn’t even acknowledge that we walked by at all. I don’t believe that they were host staff, but that shouldn’t matter. You only have a job because people walk through that door and order food. Take a second and provide some customer service. This type of interaction will bump you down by a star every time. As a burger joint, if you want to be considered above average then you had better bring your A game when it comes to hospitality. Especially if I just spent $80.00 for 3 people to eat… at a burger joint…. With that said food and atmosphere were ok. My wife and I decided to partake in the alcoholic frappes. I had the birthday cake flavor and it was delicious! The only issue was that the portion was small when compared to competitors like Burgatory. My wife had the Smores flavor, it was also very tasty. As I began looking over the original burgers I realized a theme…. small portions for a lot of money. The math for burger sizes is a little funky… The “Our Burger” single is 1/3 lb(5.3 oz) and the double is 6 oz total (2, 3 oz patties). With such a small difference, why pay more? I was hungry so I went for the triple (3, 3oz patties). The reason that I stuck with their original burger is because I assumed it was their “Crown Jewel”. I wanted to taste the special sauce, etc. The burger was good. I didn’t notice much extra flavor from the sauce. The meat and cheese were average. I loved the fresh pickles! In the end, it was a really good burger. I’d say the flavor was comparable to 5 guys. After doing some homework, the size was as well. As with most of the burger joints these days, fries are not included. We ordered Fries and an order of sweet potato tots. The tots we great and the fries were average. My daughter had the strawberry cupcake, very tasty but nothing to write home about. In the end, Whalburgers was good from a food perspective. It was a little over priced but I expected that. If I were already at the mall and had a hankering for a burger I’d go back. However, if I am driving to that area with a hankering for a burger it probably isn’t my first choice. I’d prefer 5 guys. The burgers are comparable but, if I have to pay extra for fries, 5 guys wins in both the flavor and quantity categories.

Burger Bank – Menu with Prices – 1617 S Weinbach Ave, Evansville

I was in Evansville today on a business trip and stumbled upon this place. A very good burger indeed! I got the burger basket with a single burger, fries and slaw. The burger was delicious, well dressed and everything tasted fresh. The fries are the crinkly kind and they were well cooked. The slaw was good too. There were other things on the menu I would have liked to try, such as their sausage sandwich and their philly steak sandwich, and if I am through this neck of the woods again I will for sure go back! Nice and friendly owner as well.

Chicken Guy! – Menu with Prices – 19565 Biscayne Blvd Ste 2946, Miami

I was expecting a lot more from this place, I ordered a chicken sandwich simple enough with two sauces; spicy mayo and garlic sauce. I have to say I was extremely disappointed, seasoning should be added to the batter maybe it wasn?t added that day. I will say the sandwich is well made with good presentation but it lacks in flavor even with the added sauces. I also ordered a side of fries that you have to pay for separately which is fine but they were tepid. The flavor of the French fries were nice but the temperature not so hot. I?d even say the fries are better than five guys which are usually too greasy. I was not satisfied maybe you will have better luck or know exactly what to ask for when ordering. Fries extra hot & crunchy, sandwich flavor please.

Rm. 727 Gastropub Menu with Prices 231 Darrow Rd, Akron

What an amazing experience! We decided to pop in around 3 on a Friday. It was happy hour, which also extended to their tapas menu. We started with an old fashioned and a jalapeño margarita while sitting at the bar. We ordered the Fungus Amongus pizza and the Ricotta Pesto Dip. The drinks: so delicious. The jalapeño margarita had a light jalapeño taste with a perfectly balanced sweet/sour margarita. I passed on the cayenne salt rim and went with the traditional salt. I enjoyed every last sip. The Old Fashioned was phenomenal. It has a delicious orange flavor with just a touch of sweetness from the oleum saccharum. Highly recommend! The tapas: Fungus Amongus pizza was handsomely topped with a variety of mushrooms and finished with the delicious truffle aioli. I could have ate just this and went home beyond happy. Ricotta Pesto Dip, beautiful presentation! The pita is thick and perfectly crunchy and the drizzle of balsamic blends with the creamy ricotta and pesto in the most harmonious of ways. A true treat. We loved it. The atmosphere at 3pm was lovely. The bartender spent time with us going over the menu and even gave us a background on the spent grain flour used in the pizza (used from the brewing process). Very friendly, very attentive. If you are in the area it is absolutely worth a stop. Even if it requires a drive, it’s very worth your time. I cannot wait to return and explore the menu even further.

Burgermaster Menu with Prices 10606 Northup Way, Bellevue

I finally got to try Burgermaster after driving past it almost everyday from work and wondering why there are so many people there at all times during the day. I can now see why this place is popular. I like the old school feel of the place- you park your car and someone comes up to your car and gets your order. It is definitely a nice change from going through your typical drive thru. The service was great and the food came out promptly. You have the option of either eating in (in your car) or getting it to go. In terms of food- I ordered the Mushroom Burger and added onions. The burger tastes homemade and despite the fact that it is a fast food place, it tasted fresh and reminded me of taste of a burger when you grill it in your backyard. The fries were very good- nice and crispy, not overly salted, great potato flavor (I know that is a silly description, but some fries taste overly seasoned and you can’t taste the potato as well). If I had anything to compare Burgermaster with, it would maybe be Five Guys burgers. I can easily seeing myself coming here for some good burgers, fries, and milkshakes. No nonsense, simple, but tasty.
