I supported these guys when they were on Kickstarter since I have been trying to adopt to the paleo lifestyle. There just aren’t many options out there that are gluten-free, dairy-free, without added sugar, or is processed. These meals are good to have on hand when I don’t feel like cooking and not have to go out and eat. This was my first order with them. I was in luck because when I Googled their name it took me to an ad to buy 3 meals, get 1 free. Score! The ordering process was easy. I just emailed them what I wanted and said that I would pick it up on Sunday because I’m cheap and didn’t way to pay the delivery fee. I got a reply within a few hours and then the invoice later. Here is what I ordered in the order I ate them: $15 Dozen of Lemon poppy seed muffins – these are so damn fluffy and tasty. I only wish they were bigger. I’d have to eat like 4 of them for breakfast, but I know a lot of work go into these and the ingredients aren’t cheap so I’d still buy them instead of try to make them myself. These would last me the whole work week if I’d only eat 2.4 a day. I will have to try the apple cinnamon’s next. $16 Seared Salmon, roasted tomato compote, zucchini cakes, seasonal veg Those zucchini cakes were very yummy, I wanted more! The salmon was pretty huge and tasted flavorful and fresh. The veggies included were sauteed cauliflower and mushrooms. I thought this was going to m favorite meal. $14 Bibimbap (sauteed skirt steak (grass-fed), cauli rice, assorted veg, fried egg, hot sauce) If you’re a bibimbap fan, you’ll love this paleo-style. The steak was plenty and flavorful without it being saucy. I made two meals out of this one for my lunches. Yay! $13 Carnitas – lettuce cups, pico de gallo, pickled radishes, roasted yam, lime wedges. I was a bit iffy about ordering this because I wasn’t sure how it was going to be packaged. It ended up being my favorite out of all of them! Sorry, salmon! They were very generous with the amount of pulled pork and the fresh lettuce wraps came in a separate container. I didn’t eat this until 3 days after I picked up my order and it was still fresh. The roasted yam and onions were very tasty, and I personally prefer yams over cauliflower. I also loved the pickled radishes even though they were really spicy. I wanted more pico de gallo and lime wedges but then it wouldn’t have fit in the box. I could have easily made two meals out of this one, but coming home from crossfit, I needed protein! I think the most value I can get is from their family style meals, so I will order those next. I hope they will add family sized sides too, like zucchini cakes and the roasted yam. I’m also super excited about their food truck and can’t wait until it rolls up to our box! I love you guys!

Asaka Japanese Cuisine Menu with Prices 801 Biltmore Ave, Asheville

The good news is that this was better than Ichiban. The service was better and the prices more reasonable since they do not cook it in front of you. The portion size was a little better but still not too much meat like I am used to at other places. I really disliked that zucchini and onions did not come with the meals and instead only carrots came with them. Carrots were okay but you could not even substitute zucchini and onion. I had Steak and Shrimp. Shrimp were small and frozen quality. Steak was very small pieces. Again, at least it was better than the other place. I doubt I will eat here again though since this is my second experience and neither really thrilled me. I love Hibachi places but I think I will look somewhere else than Asheville.

The Russell – Menu with Prices – 3141 Main St, Kansas City

The type of place where you order first, find a table, then bring you the food. The inside is rustic and small so taking a large party at peak hours might be tricky. We went post lunch rush and there were plenty of tables open. A couple large tables to share. I’m not a sweets person but they had a huuuge selection that looked tasty. The menu was intriguing and there were daily specials not listed. The steak and greens salad did NOT disappoint. When they say “grilled vegetables” they mean freshly grilled and not your basic peppers and onions. Mushrooms, asparagus, zucchini, cauliflower, and a red pepper – all fresh. Absolutely delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly and there was so much I couldn’t finish it. This was a hearty salad that’s kept me full for hours. Even the tea was great. Fresh brewed every morning and sourced from a local company. We didn’t interact with much staff but they were all smiley and pleasant. This is a place that must have regulars as they had a bunch of memorabilia(?) for sale. Def

Trejo’s Tacos – Menu with Prices – 835 W Jefferson Blvd Suite 1735, Los Angeles

Best.Tacos.Ever. Seriously. I don’t know why this place has three stars. I don’t eat meat, so that may color my review – at most places I’m offered the same old bean/cheese/grilled veg. tacos, or just fresh grilled fish with fresh salsas. Also, the tacos here are not cheap – if you’re a starving student, it’s not the cheapest place to fill up. But, having said that, the veggie and fish tacos here were incredible. In San Diego, Lola 55 and Tocayo are trying to do this kind of thing, but at Trejo’s they really succeed. Each taco was DELICIOUS and each different, with its own cremas and toppings. So good! Blackened salmon taco: I’ve had a lot of fish tacos in my life since I don’t eat meat, but this was extremely creative and delicious. Yes, the salmon was a little dry, but once I added some lime, it was all good. YUM. I got free guac with Yelp-In and didn’t even want to put it on the taco, it was too perfect as is. CAULIFLOWER TACO: OMG. This would be a Top Chef quickfire winner in my book. I eat a lot of cauliflower too, but this was crispy without being fried/battered. And the sauces too were just YUM. JACKFRUIT: This was actually my least favorite of the three, just because it had a more southwestern flavor vibe too it which is not my fave. BUT it was absolutely huge, and it was still yummy. For a starving student, this is the best deal, because it’s $4.50 for a huge taco. (the cauliflower is much less food for the same price, and the salmon is $6.50, which I still think was really worth it). I didn’t even get to try the other veggie option, the mushroom asada tacos. They also have bowls and burritos. And the young women working here were really nice. It was loud inside with a visiting teen group but the patio was pleasant. Hats off to Trejo’s. LA’s got lots of traffic….but for tacos like this, this San Diego girl will say “I love LA!”

Cabo Bobâ??s – Menu with Prices – 847 NE Interstate 410 Loop, San Antonio

After a couple visits to Cabo Bob’s I am sold. An outstanding burrito, I haven’t tried anything else yet, but love the burritos. They offer up burritos, tacos, salads, nachos and bowls, perhaps quesadillas as well. They have various topping and protein options, to include fish tacos, or fish anything if you like which is crispy tilapia, steak fajita, chicken fajita, shredded pork, shredded brisket, and sautéed veggies. The chicken reds and toast your tortilla to order as well which is nice. So on my most recent visit I went with the steak burrito, and asked them to make me a tortilla using all 4 flavors so they mixed buttermilk flour, ancho chili, cilantro tomatillo, and Smokey cheddar to make me a nice tie dye tortilla, filled with steak, cilantro lime rice, Baja beans(sautéed veggies mixed with pink, cargamanto, navy, and black beans) which seemed like a nice mix to me. Th that I added fresh shredded Monterey Jack cheese, sautéed poblano peppers, onions and zucchini, along with lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, queso, pico de gallo, chopped onion and cilantro as well as diced fresh jalapeño, and shredded cabbage. Top all that with some fresh lime juice, tangy tomatillo salsa, hot jalapeño salsa, chipotle crema, and their hot 66 red sauce and my massive burrito was complete. I decided on no sides, and did not need them as this massive burrito should be able to fill anyone up. The burrito has great flavor from the mix of beans, so the melding of all the sauces and fillings, some citrusy tang, a bit of spice, and nice texture. Soft beans and rice, some well seared meat, and the fresh pico, plus a nice crunch from the cabbage all come together to make an amazing burrito. I highly recommend trying out Cabo Bob’s, and I am sure all their other items are amazing too, but I am in love with the burritos. A very cool little restaurant, with a nice beach, Baja surf shack feel, putting out quality food, using quality ingredients, so for around $10 you can get a pretty massive burrito that is sure to leave you satisfied. They can do gluten free corn tortillas as well, and have many veggie, and if need be dairy free options. They also don’t use any high fructose corn syrup in their drinks, so they have all specialty sodas which is pretty cool. So if you are near the airport and wanting a good west coast style burrito check it out I am sure you will enjoy the experience.

KO’OX HANA’ – Menu with Prices – 214 Augusta Ave, Toronto

Ko’ox Hana is a great place to get some cheap, filling, tasty eats. They have an option where you can choose 3 items for $9.99. Some of these items include tamales, panuchos, salbutes, tacos (cochinita pibil), or some undefined vegetarian dishes. I got two salbutes and a taco. According to the menu, those are slightly sauteed tortillas covered in shredded chicken or achiote grilled pork, along with the “perfect garnish”. Slightly sauteed actually seemed more fried than sauteed, but I actually preferred it fried to slightly sauteed. I actually wasn’t asked whether I wanted the chicken or the pork and I didn’t realize until they put the chicken option down. I actually wanted the pork. I should have asked. For those of you who were wondering, the perfect garnish included was lettuce, pickled onions, avocado slices, and queso. My avocado was had some brown spots, but other than that and the chicken thing, these were very tasty, and at $10, very good. No tamales this time, but I’m excited to try a lot more next time.

Prime 55 Restaurant & Lounge – Menu with Prices – 6100 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis

I just wanted to start off with that the food at Prime 55 was amazing! The atmosphere was a hip vibe and am very happy that it’s close by! The hostess was amazing and very nice! I started off with crab cakes and Caesar’s salad and those were great. The crab cakes come in sets of three and they were amazing! Even though they are on the appetizer menu they were too small to really share but the flavors were amazing. For the entree I got the signature steak 55. It was well seasoned and came with a macaroni patty and veggies. I was shocked at the amount of steak it was. It was well worth it! Not to mention the food came out wicked fast! Now for the bad part. We had a party of 16 and one server for all of us. I can’t remember her name but she was tall and skinny and had a horrible attitude. I feel for a new restaurant, you would want to put your best foot forward with the caliber of servers and she was atrocious! She was chewing gum in our faces, actively on her phone in front of us. I’ve never experienced such horrible service from a new restaurant. It was horrible. Our server was always missing and was not attentive. The section she had only includes our party and she was constantly missing. The only saving grace was the bus boy, I want to acknowledge that he was amazing. I didn’t catch his name but he had dreadlocks and he was EXTREMELY attentive. He should be a server there because you could tell he cared about his job unlike our actual server that was no where to be found. I was with a Vegetarian, who loved the cauliflower steak that he ordered one to go. However, the server brought it to him with chicken on top on it, how are you going to put chicken on a vegetarian steak? That was horrible. But that’s not even the worst part of this. The waitress didn’t even put it on his bill or any one else’s! So who knows how much free food she is handing to customers! That’s overhead that a new business can’t afford. I hope they seriously consider her employment there because she affectively ruined our first impression of Prime 55. I wish I could give this place a 2.5 because the food was a 5 but everything else was a 1 at best. I’m sorry to post a bad star review on a new restaurant but the service was absolutely horrible. And this restaurant is not ready to host large groups properly.w

PressRoom Pub – Menu with Prices – 220 Herald Pl, Syracuse

When we were up in Syracuse for a college visit we really tried to find some tasty places to eat and found lots of success. Right before we left town we wanted to stop in for one last meal and The Press Room Pub was the where Yelp sent us. The place was pretty empty when we got there, but our waitress was great…clearly she knew the menu and took the time to talk to us about the area and even some of the other restaurants. I ordered an Ommegang and Wifey just had an iced tea (she was driving home). My son wanted the hot pretzels to start and also ordered wings for his meal. My wife got one of their special wraps (salmon I think) and I had my third burger in two days…the Smokehouse burger – a 1/2 pound angus patty with BBQ, Sautéed onions, Bacon, & Swiss Cheese on a Bakery Roll, w/ fries. The burger was AWESOME and my son and Wifey also really liked their meals. My son likes his wings well done and they came out perfectly. The whole meal was a hit and if my son ends up at Syracuse I KNOW he’ll spend time in this place. Food was too good to not go back.

Carmines di Vega – Menu with Prices – 1500 Whalley Ave, New Haven

Amazing! We had eggplant rollatini for an appetizer and it was fantastic. The marinara sauce was so fresh and the eggplant had a nice texture – not exactly crisp but definitely not soggy. For dinner I had the Salmon Con Finocchio (salmon with with fresh fennel and leeks in a tomato pernod cream sauce). I’m not sure I have words for it. The salmon was cooked exactly right and it was placed on top of a bed of leeks and fennel. The sauce took on an anise flavor from the fennel and it was fantastic and totally unique. I opted for the fresh vegetables instead of pasta and the zucchini was a perfect complement. The entree came with a salad which was well beyond your traditional iceberg lettuce fare. It was filled with vegetables and the salad dressing was very clearly homemade. My whole family loved their meals (tilapia for a couple people and haddock for another plus a caesar salad for one and a tri colore salad for another). The kids had pasta with meatballs on the side. I wasn’t a huge fan of the meatballs. I thought they were a little tough but I’m more of a fish person. The atmosphere and service was warm and friendly with an old school twist (think a nice Italian man singing Sinatra) but the food was anything but old school. It was a fresh, updated version of Italian and I won’t hesitate to visit again and recommend Carmine’s to friends.

Dove + Deer Menu with Prices 32 Dove St, Albany

Very, very impressed with this new spot! I’m kind of jealous of those living within walking distance with such a cute place to go not only for an excellent meal, but interesting drink options, and overall just a cool place to hang out. Visited a few months ago with friends for dinner, and we all enjoyed our meals and the experience. The ambiance is very relaxed, yet trendy. The dim lighting, and rustic, yet modern decor would make for a great intimate date night OR a fun girls night. Our group shared a couple of apps – the fried mozzarella and the shaved cauliflower. The mozzarella was obviously delicious. I just wish there was more of it to share among the three of us. My girlfriend had to convince me to try the cauliflower, and I’m so glad I did. The description sounded weird, but the taste was fantastic. Perfectly tangy, crunchy, and flavorful…and as an added bonus, it’s healthy! I have been wanting to recreate that dish since we went. For dinner, I opted for the chimichurri steak, which was cooked perfectly, and plated very nicely. All of our dinners’ were presented impressively, and tasted delicious. We were all satisfied with our meals, and the overall experience.

Motley School Tavern – Menu with Prices – 1903 Beaver Ave, Des Moines

Really wanted to love this place but it’s just ok. Atmosphere 3/5: nice and casual but the layouts a bit weird, they seated our party of six at a table that was divided by posts which was weird. We were also seated next to an area where the servers congregated, the result is that their conversation along with the overall “loudness” of the venue made it hard for our group to have conversations without almost shouting. Entrees and apps 2/5: we arrived starving and anticipating a great meal. We started with onion rings and pretzels. The onion rings were nicely flavored but a bit too spicy for some in our party. The pretzels were warm and dipping sauces good but the pretzels were more like Olive garden breadsticks and a bit bland. Then we had the MST burger, double stack burger, chicken fried steak, and the zucchini pasta. Honestly the best part of the entrees were the fries that came with the burgers. If you have eaten at islands in California the fries were just like those. The burgers were a bit weird, they were good but they were tiny in width and very tall. The party was more like a meat ball than a burger. They reminded me of the burgers my mom used to make, the round Patty balls in between white bread. Burgers were just ok. The chicken fried steak was gross honestly, the steak was mealy and almost cold on the inside. Tasted like they fried it while it was frozen. The worst was the zucchini pasta. First, remember that the pasta is not made from zucchini which is he description might infer. Second it was covered in a romesco that was weirdly spiced, it was spicy and minty which was a HORRIBLE combo. Don’t order this. Desserts 5/5: we ordered all of them, and the scotheroos, the donuts and the crumble. All were good but for me the best were the donuts, light and airy with a wonderful dipping sauce. Doubt we will ever be back since it’s far and I only travel for excellent meals not mediocre but I hope they stay in business. Important to note that service was 5/5 they were amazing. They even took the time to ask why we didn’t like the pasta because they noticed it was the only dish we didn’t ask to be boxed up.

Fresh Kitchen – Menu with Prices – 4616 W Kennedy Blvd, Tampa

Plenty of people at work rave about Fresh Kitchen, so I’ve given it several tries. My problem with the place is its lack of consistency. I’ve ordered the same items three times now, but while the first time was fantastic, my second two meals left a lot to be desired. My coworker picked up my meal for me the first time I tried this place. I ordered the sweet potato noodles, the cauliflower mash, the chick peas, and the almond chicken. However, she called me and told me they were out of chick peas, and said I had to choose quickly because there was a line behind her. So I hurriedly said the sweet potatoes, knowing full well I already had the noodles and the mash there — but I was under pressure. Well it turns out I didn’t like the noodles at all, but the sweet potatoes were the best thing I had from that bowl. All in all I was fairly impressed: the mash had a good consistency that didn’t scream cauliflower, the chicken was good, and the sweet potatoes were honestly fantastic. I told my coworker we could totally order from here again. However, I drove to Fresh Kitchen the next time and ordered pretty much the same foods, this time getting the chick peas instead of the noodles. But the sweet potatoes were underdone, the mash had HUGE chunks of cauliflower in it and was much more bland than before, and the chicken tasted like it had been sitting out for hours. My third visit ended up being much like the second. I’m going to give it another shot and hope for the quality I got from the first meal I had here — but I know it’ll be a gamble.

Sheaâ??s Bistro & Bar – Menu with Prices – 658 Main St, Buffalo

This is the perfect place for dinner before a show at Shea’s. Of course you get to park once and then be at a lovely restaurant that is right in the same building complex as the theater….. but also because the service and the food are very good. The menu changes with each show that runs at Shea’s. Each time it’s a prix fixe 3 course meal (for $30 per person). And… there’s a terrific wine list (and cocktail and beer list as well). We shared a wonderful bottle of Malbec. The service is friendly and helpful. My date and I each started with the Butterbean and Kale Soup (with heirloom tomatoes, mirepoix, and parmesan cheese). It tasted like it was simmered all day because the flavors melded perfectly, and the kale was tender and delicious. Fresh bread and sweet creamy butter was brought to accompany our first course. For entrees my date had the Roast Salmon (with marinated vegetables, herbed couscous, and pesto sauce), and I had the Sirloin Steak (with carrot-parsnip purée and roasted asparagus). Both dishes were perfectly executed (yes…. I tasted both). The salmon was perfectly cooked and topped with pesto that tasted like a summer day. The (Israeli) couscous and veggies were a light and tasty counterpoint to the flavorful fish. My steak was cooked exactly to order, and topped with a delicious demi-glaze. The oven roasted asparagus was tasty. And, the vegetable purée added a bit of sweetness that nicely complimented the other elements of the dish. For dessert we opted to try one of each of the two options and share. Both the Warm Grape Cake (with honey-grape syrup, whipped topping, and almonds) and the S’more Trifle (with graham crackers, chocolate pudding, and marshmallow) were absolutely picture-perfect (but I forgot to snap a photo). They were a bit on the sweet side for me though. And, I was disappointed that the whipped topping on the cake was indeed “topping” and not real whipped cream. Still…. it was a great dinner…. in a lovely and convenient location. I will certainly be back.
