A friend had been talking about this place since I came back to Boise for a temporary work assignment, and after a mis-fire on a recent Monday (note, they are closed Sunday and Monday; thankfully we realized that before we drove over), we made it there another evening and were not disappointed. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly cashier who helped us look over the menu and place an order. Everything sounded good, but I settled on the Chicken Tinga and Crispy Pork Belly Bahn Mi tacos; my friend got the Idaho Spud & Chorizo and the Mushroom tacos. We paid, were given a number, and plopped down at a table. The only negative, and this was by no means Madre’s fault, was that there was a large group of young families at a center table, and the kids kinda took over, making it difficult to pass to access the water at the bar or even the bathroom. Parents – I’m glad you can still enjoy socializing, and I support businesses that accommodate you, but please, mind your children! I was super worried about one toddler that kept hovering near the swinging kitchen door and found it hard to focus on anything else until the group left. Le sigh. Back to the food. Our tacos arrived in a timely manner and I was glad to see the double tortilla technique being utilized, makes for a heck of an easier time eating! They are small street-taco size, but this was expected. And as there is only 1 taco per order, we couldn’t exactly share, but we did manage to at least take a bit of each others to sample the flavors. I liked the Chicken Tinga, until I tried the Bahn Mi.. the Tinga needed more flavor, it was a bit bland, but the Bahn Mi more than made up for it. And the Mushroom was also outstanding! The house manager/owner was making rounds and stopped by to make sure we were satisfied. I always appreciate when there is direct interaction between customers and owners, I think it makes for a more personal experience. There are community and private tables, bar stools, and a beautiful outdoor seating area that I can’t wait to enjoy when the weather warms. I really liked the feel of the place, too, with the calming blue-toned tiles, inviting wood accents, and enough greenery to give the place life without overdoing it. I would definitely come back.

Tako Loko Mexican Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 5-3248 Isleville St, Halifax

A happy find! Tried here on a recent Saturday evening in July on a whim, and glad I did. A friend and I were driving in the neighborhood and stopped in around 6:30/7? There was one other customer inside, and a table full outside. Two picnic tables outside and seating for maybe 15 inside? So it’s pretty small, but even on our 2nd visit for lunch on a weekday, it still wasn’t busy. Cute atmosphere with the menu on a chalkboard, lots of natural light, partial view into the kitchen. Very friendly owners & staff. The most important part: the food, which is a very small menu but satisfying. We tried the tinga (chicken), the chorizo, cochinita, fish, pastor and tofu tinga. My personal least favorite was the tofu tinga, but we both loved all the others which were full of juicy flavor. They are small on a corn tortilla, but just perfect to get 3 or 4 as a meal and then be full. The guac & chips were very good too, with offer of chip top-up. Finish your meal with a tasty Jarrito pop. Next visit I will try the quesadillas with rice & beans, but see my main go-to being the fish & pastor tacos.

El Abajeño Tacos – Menu with Prices – 109 Atkinson St, Roseville

You don’t have to wait for the weekend to enjoy deliicous tacos near Denio’s Farmer’s Market in Roseville, as El Abajeño Tacos is open six days a week – closed Monday – and serves amazing tacos, at a very reasonable price. When it comes to placing your order, El Abajeño Tacos takes a very different approach than most Mexican restaurants. You make your selection from the menu, posted above the kitchen, and turn around to a gentleman who is setting near the soft drink cooler, who you pay, and in return, he’ll give you a number. He also answers the phone, as the restaurant does a brisk take-out business. The indoor dining room is super tiny, so most diners prefer to enjoy their meals outside, on the comfortable, covered patio in front of the entrance. You can enjoy your tacos and watch the activity of Atkinson Street, which can be quite lively on weekends. I went with “Tacos de Birria,” I absolutely LOVE birria, so I ordered three of them; I probably cold eat six! At $1.85 each, I can afford to order more than one taco! The tacos start with a single toasted, regular size corn tortilla. Your taco is topped with the meat of your choosing – my choice was birria, which is stewed goat meat – along with diced white onion and fresh cilantro. The tacos are very basic, but they’re amazingly delicious! Each taco comes with a small slice of fresh lime, just like in Mexico, so you can squeeze fresh lime juice on your taco to enhance the flavor. Muy sabroso! Birria has a reputation of being spicy, and it really isn’t, as it’s just plain flavorful. Like other Mexican restaurants, El Abajeño Tacos makes birria in a large pot, which results in a juicy, tender, flavorful cut of goat meat. In Mexico, birria is served as a stew, a main dish entree, or as a topping for tacos, such as I enjoyed today. The birria I enjoyed on my tacos was flavorful, not at all spicy, juicy, and delicious. If you love birria, you’ll love these tacos! The tacos are delicious, the outdoor dining is comfortable, the staff is friendly, and the price is right. When you’re in the mood for delicious tacos, pay a visit to El Abajeño Tacos, located on Atkinson Street, in Roseville.

Farm To Charm Food Truck Menu with Prices 3310 Batavia Ave, Baltimore

That was some amazing pork! Farm to Charm – a play on farm to table, and you know that you are going to get fresh food (farm) at table (expensive) prices. In reality, Farm to Charm is pretty standard pricing for a food truck in the area, which is to say, just a tad too much. The food, very good food, makes this something you can swallow – but not as a regular lunch option. The offerings that day were burgers (10 or more dollars with no side) or tacos (3 for 9 dollars). I went for the Tacos when the agreed to do 2 pork and one mushroom. I also got a side of fries. The mushroom taco had fresh yellow squash in it – very tasty. The pork was great -good meat and well seasoned. They were on the small side (especially for 3 bucks a piece) – so I was glad I got the side of fries. The fries are that slightly over cooked variety that would go really well with a nice sauce or as a base for poutine. With ketchup, they just screamed for something more interesting on top and at $4, a tad expensive to not answer this call. So, over all, I enjoyed my meal, it came quick and the guys running the truck where friendly. My suggestion would be to do combo deals just so patrons don’t feel ripped off adding fries to a burger – or charge $4 for the fries – but really dress them up. As it is, they’re still a welcome addition to the food truck scene, and offer a bit of variety to the lunch options.

Taco Truck of Dos Hermanos Menu with Prices 221 W Valley Ave, Birmingham

I have finally hunt this food truck down and the hype is real – everything I got was delicious and best of all, very reasonably priced! Make sure you bring cash because they don’t take card, but for ~$10 you can be get a bangin’ meal. Between my friend and I we ordered: 2 tostada civeche, 1 asada (steak), 1 pollo (chicken), 1 barbacoa (lamb), 1 chorizo, and 2 buche (pork belly) which all came out to $18. Tacos are $2, Tostada are $3 each (minimum of 2 for to go orders) We got it to go and took it to Railroad Park to eat. I got the pollo and buche tacos and I loved the flavor of the pollo taco! It was super flavorful and not dry at all. The buche was also good but not as inherently flavorful as the pollo. My tostada was also very good and I’m glad they put the tortilla chips on the side so it didn’t get soggy during transport. My friend’s favorite taco he got was the lamb barbacoa, but he loved all of them. Overall, would recommend coming to check this gem out! Hands down the best AND most affordable tacos in town!

Zaddys Tacos Menu with Prices 800 34th St, Bakersfield

This review is solely based off of the tacos. I plan on returning for the BBQ. Recently, my wife who is from Arkansas made me some tacos that she grew up eating. It was ground beef, with lettuce, tomatoes, onion, olives, shredded cheese and ketchup. It wasn’t bad, a bit weird (I am Mexican and when I think taco It makes me think of Mama hand making some tortillas with some delicious Asada) This is what Zaddy’s tacos are to me as well. Not bad, but not what you would expect a traditional taco to taste like. They look like a Mexican taco for sure. Let’s start off with the pros: The owner of Zaddy’s is an awesome guy. Really polite, seemed really down to earth and sounded like he loved what he does. The service he provided was no doubt 5 stars! Now the tacos. The meat in all 3 tacos that I had was cooked perfectly. Small juicy little cubes of steak, chicken and pork. The green and red salsa were killer, and the red had a nice little kick to it. The tortillas are also heaped generously with the meat! Out of the 3, I think the chicken was the best. Neither I or my wife were a huge fan of the seasonings used on the pork or steak though. Like I said, not bad but definitely not what we are used to but keep in mind the menu says Steak and Pork. Not Asada and pastor. The tacos 3.5 stars Service 5 stars Overall, not too bad. Cheap. Big portions. Will return to try other items and see if it was just an off day.

Taco Bamba Taqueria – Menu with Prices – 10629 Braddock Rd, Fairfax

Finally a decent taco place that wont have me going back to taco bell for my fix of tacos! Walking in, first thing to note is the blaring metal music. Not really a conversation friendly environment, but maybe that was the vibe they were going for? Tacos. I’m here to talk about the tacos. Had the taco bamba and chicharron and both of them had soft texture tortillas with healthy servings of meat inside each taco. The tacos were not salty at all, and they provide sauces on the side to spice up the experience depending on how daring you are! (You can ask for their hottest sauce) Bonus points for me were that no juices leaked out of the taco while I was eating it, which I dont know if it was intentional or not. Overall the tacos were good, but nothing amazing. Definitely could be a common taco stop for me due to convenience. ON A SIDE NOTE: My friend ordered their churros, and as soon as she took the first bite her face warped… Apparently she said it was WAY too sweet, so be careful if you are not fond of sweets!

Tacos Monterrey – Menu with Prices – 212 S Washington Square, Lansing

Well, it sucked. I was excited to try a new Mexican place but the experience left much to be desired. I ordered their taco combo and was told I could not mix and match tacos. Um, okay, very well three tinga de pollo please. With a medium drink my total was just under $14.00. At this point disappointment was creeping into my mind but I was hungry and crunched for time. The restaurant had exactly one other person in it so at least my food should arrive quickly. And it did! But then I was told to dress my tacos at the rather sad looking ‘salad bar’ I open my to-go box and balanced it one hand while awkwardly trying to open each taco to dress them. There was no surface to even set the box down while dressing them. Aside from the cilantro and pico the bar items were pedestrian and disappointing. The hot sauce was bland and the shredded cheddar cheese appeared to be commandeered from a Taco Bell. Things like cotija, queso fresco, an actual hot sauce, and a place to set my box down would have gone a long way. Unfortunately, the disappointment continued as the chicken was perhaps the greasiest yet bland shredded chicken I’ve ever tasted. Adding to the disappointment was the somewhat crunchy rice and refried beans that tasted can fresh. For $7 it would be an alright lunch but for $14 it was a joke. I’m giving two stars as the place seemed clean and the service was pleasant.

Pollo Express – Menu with Prices – 2501 W Pawnee St, Wichita

We ate here for our first time Saturday and were back on Monday. The tacos were excellent. The transmission tacos were great and so were the carnitas taco and the pastor taco but we preferred the transmission. The chile relleno was very good and the nachos were huge. The tacos have a very generous amount of meat and the fried onions on the transmission just put it over the top. In addition to the great food the servers were prompt and friendly. Last but not least the prices were very reasonable.

The Taco Man & Catering – Menu with Prices – 2502 S Euclid Ave, Ontario

This is an update to my latest visit to The Taco Man. I was contacted by their sales & marketing director, Yesenia about my last review and they wanted to make it right. I decided to stop by for lunch and they were a little busy. The line moved quickly, and the employees were very courteous. The food was good as always. My favorite is their signature al pastor tacos with the mango salsa. The Taco Man is one of my favorite taco spots in SoCal. I appreciate The Taco Man reaching out. Thank you. I have included my first review of this place because it was a ROTD. Do you like good and inexpensive food? Are unicorns real? Have you ever heard of bacon infused cinnamon rolls? Do any of those questions make sense? Not really. Except for the first one. Tacos, tacos, tacos everywhere is what’s it’s like here in SoCal. I can’t drive anywhere without seeing a taco shop. I think about tacos all the time, I dream tacos, when I work out I look for pictures of tacos. Simple food group, tortilla, meat, onions, cilantro, salsa = TACO! The taco man offers a simple menu of your traditional tacos. They also have a few that are different. If you like chorizo then this is your spot. The only bad thing is they offer carnitas on Tuesday only, should lose a star for that but I guess that’s the secret behind the marketing. To get fools like me to return because who doesn’t eat carnitas tacos (no offense my Veg peeps, I still got mad love for you, you’re not meant to read that last statement). Order at counter and the magic will happen. The umpa lumpas and Santa’s elves will sprinkle some fairy dust on those delicious tacos for you to enjoy. If you’re feeling adventurous try ordering the Big Donk burrito. 2 pounds of OMG. It’s delicious. I was able to finish in about 20 minutes but felt miserable for next few hours and didn’t eat for the next 24. I was kidding about the umpa lumpas and Santa’s elves. They do special stuff there. Simple and inexpensive meal for everyone to enjoy. I wish they had a pay it forward taco wall so I could get tacos for all my Yelp peeps to enjoy and maybe they return the favor. Haha! Wishful thinking. Check out it’s Raining Tacos, the world would be a much better place. youtu.be/npjF032TDDQ

Off The Rez Cafe – Menu with Prices – 4300 15th Avenue Northeast Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, Seattle

I’m glad Off The Rez specializes in fry bread because damn, it was good and there really aren’t many places that do it. But the savory dishes seemed to be amiss. My friend and I spotted this food truck, as it was the truck that was parked outside of Optimism Brewery when we visited. You always need bites with your beer; and when she found out that Off the Rez was here, she was excited to try their fry bread. I had never eaten fry bread before, but was down to try something new. My friend ordered the Powwow Burger, a bacon cheeseburger with fry bread for buns, while I had two Indian tacos, one with pork and the other with chicken. Menu was pretty standard with taco and burger combinations, with sides like kale salad and fries. My Indian tacos were A-OK. Don’t get me wrong – the fry bread was awesome! It was soft and fluffy and had crispy edges. I would’ve happily just eaten it by itself. But getting it as a taco, to sandwich the meat and toppings seemed to distract from the real winner of Off The Rez, the fry bread. Both of my meats, chicken and pork were bland. You’d think that with the toppings it wouldn’t be so, but they were. My chicken taco included shredded cheese and slaw in a crema sauce while the pork one had a BBQ sauce with slaw and was supposed to have jalapenos, but sadly, they must’ve forgot to put it on. The sauces did help to add some flavor to the tacos, but meat just never came through. My friend felt the same way about her Powwow Burger, saying that the beef patty tasted like it wasn’t seasoned. I advise getting a sweet fry bread item instead of a savory dish, in hopes that it fares much better. The fry bread was really good, so the simpler the toppings, the better.

Tacos El Gordo – Menu with Prices – 1510 N National Ave, Springfield

(I’ll be upfront and admit that I’ve only had their chicken and steak tacos. I’m sure the rest of their menu is just as good, but I’ve become quite addicted to the chicken tacos, and consequently haven’t had the willpower to try anything else. ) So about the chicken tacos: they are small and a bit pricey, but they are also the best tacos I have ever eaten… including in Mexico. They are really fantastic. I personally prefer to have them hold the onions, but that’s merely personal preference and no reflection on the quality of the onions. They only use quality ingredients. Each taco is fairly small, so for me four makes a full meal. You may prefer two to six, depending upon your appetite. They actually did heat up very well later though, so if you order too many, save them! Each one comes with a small slice of lime. If you squeeze some juice out, it really does add something amazing to the flavor. On a side-note, the steak tacos were outstanding as well. I’ve been favoring the chicken, but the steak was also outstanding. I’ll be honest and admit that I’d foolishly ignored this place for years, because I hadn’t been impressed with the restaurant which had preceded them, and the building was unremarkable. My foolish loss! I will be making up for that mistake over the coming years, by eating here every chance I get.
