Up here for my son’s annual lacrosse tournament, and the thing to do while in Bend is going to a microbrewery or tap house after our games are done. This time we ended up at On Tap. It’s a great place that’s very family-friendly and they have a wide selection of beers plus, as seems to be the norm in Bend, they have food trucks; one of which is Himalayan Bites. Wanting something different, I ordered the Shaapta which is a spicy stir-fried beef dish tossed with green onions and bell peppers, seasoned with a variety of Himalayan spices and red pepper, and garnished with fresh cilantro. The dish comes with a nice salad with a vinaigrette dressing and a scoop of brown rice. Included with the meal are two dipping sauces. One is much like a salsa and the other seemed like a cilantro cream sauce. I’m not sure, but I preferred the cream sauce. It was wonderful. BTW, if you like spicy food like I do, when they ask you how spicy you want it, tell them to make it really spicy. Otherwise, they’ll probably dumb it down. When I asked for very spicy, the guy asked me how hot was the hottest I’ve ever had, and when I described a Thai basil chicken I’ve had in the past, plus a Habanero/Scotch Bonnet pepper sauce that I make that has 50 to 60 peppers per quart. He just smiled and said that I’ll really like this dish then. I was not at all disappointed. Though the pepper heat was not that strong, it did build up over time to a pleasant burn. And hey! What better way to soothe the heat than with another beer! The Pilsner I had with my meal was a perfect complement to the dish, but I really loved it with the IPA. The bitterness of the hops really brought out the sweetness in the peppers. Without needing to say more, I highly recommend this truck if you’re over at On Tap. I heard they’re also at Crux, so if I happen to go there, I’ll try a different dish. I don’t think I can go wrong with Himalayan Bites.

Hometown Delicious – Menu with Prices – 5103 W Market St ste a, Greensboro

Went for the first time with three other first-timers. The menu online conflicted with the menu at the restaurant – mainly, there are a few alcoholic beverage options on the menu we saw online, but no alcohol is served in the restaurant (which was a disappointment)! They need a liquor license. The server was helpful in providing recommendations, and we ordered: -Spicy chicken (hot – 2 chili peppers): seasoned with whole peppercorns that may numb your tongue…not for the faint of heat. -Sesame chicken: good, no frills. Served with broccoli. -Spicy and sour soup: this is enough to share with 4+ people. Definitely a good value though, as this soup dish is $6. The flavor did not blow me away, but it was good enough. -Scalded beef sliced w/ enoki in sour and spicy soup (3 chili peppers to indicate ultimate heat): this soup is interesting and the beef was very fatty, although the person who ordered it thoroughly enjoyed it. I took a few bites and the heat basically closed my throat. Things we learned: They have a few Lazy Susan tables (for 5+ people – great for ordering family style and sharing, which is what we would recommend after our experience). The fortune cookies were oddly SPOT ON for 3/4 of us. Also, there is a menu item for tilapia, which is alive – you need to make a reservation in advance for this dish. Overall, the red Chinese lanterns made for a cozy ambiance and the restaurant had a nice flow of patrons for a Wednesday evening.

Szechuan Chef – Menu with Prices – 4344 Convoy St, San Diego

F this place and F their nasty workers there. Never been before, and so I do a walk in for a to go order. Place seemed pleasant at first. I ask what the best thing they make she asked if I like spicy, which I do, I’m a huge spicy fan. She says the Lamb Soup so I say Ok! Asks if I want rice and of course I do, so I sit down at a table. She gives me the bill which I pay, and I always hold the tip until the end because why would you tip before you get anything? That’s just dumb. And do we really have to tip to go orders now? McDonalds? Taco Bell? She makes a comment under her breath when she collects the check seeing no tip, I mean she is staring at the bill? What’s up with that? And so I wait. And wait. And I see two tables of people who came in and ordered well after me get their food. Whatever. It happens. Maybe that was already ready benefit of the doubt. Mind you this lady is just ignoring me. Like no water, hot tea, basically rude doesn’t have time for me. Well I get my food and I go to open it, it’s double knotted so no way to get it open. I ask if there is a spoon in there because that’s the oldest chinese trick in the book, and of course there isn’t. There’s two chopsticks and a fork though! For soup! F yeah! I ask if there’s a spoon which she can’t understand, so I have to repeat it several times, she acts like oops I forgot. No you didn’t. I know your game. So I drive to work cut the bag open, thanks again lady, and take a spoonful of the broth and am immediately kicked in the nuts with how much pepper, jalapeno, habanero there is. It is literally a 15 out of 10 in spicy ranks. Now mind you I love spicy food, so I’m thinking this is just a challenge but after about 3 bites I’m dying, the chopped peppers and sliced fresh jalapenos are in literally every mouthful that it’s just not edible. I decide that maybe I’m over reacting and to pull out all the peppers in this thing (that I can) mind you the ground up stuff, flakes and pepper seeds are everywhere so I couldn’t get those. And you can judge for yourself from the picture of ONE of the containers. ONE. And it looked to be the less spicy one. I counted over 80 peppers. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF. SPICY does not give you the right to basically murder someones taste buds. You NEED to warn or ask how much spicy they like. You can’t just INUNDATE a dish to death with spicy materials! There were like maybe 4 razor thin strips of lamb, peppers, whatever the soup base was and that is freaking it. I put a massive amount of rice and those clear noodles in this thing and it still was too much to even enjoy. SHAME ON THIS PLACE.

Yummy Mummy – Menu with Prices – Bay#9 Food Court, 119 N Robinson Ave, Oklahoma City

Unique new addition to the Robinson Renaissance food court. I had lunch at Yummy Mummy on a Wednesday. From the time I ordered until my food arrived was less than 10 minutes. And, the food was HOT and FRESH. Clearly it had not been sitting under a salamander forever. This is a reasonable amount of time to wait for hot food during the lunch rush, so I had no problem with the wait. I went with the beef mummy wrap, spicy potatoes instead of fries, and a side of red pepper hummus. The wrap is a good size and the ingredients were distributed well. There were some bites that I did not get everything, but for the most part I got all ingredients in each bite. The meat is seasoned well and the wrap is toasted which results in a slight crisp to the wrap. The herbs and sauce are a nice touch and add some brightness. I would definitely order this again. The spicy potatoes were not too spicy, so don’t be turned off if you aren’t into heat. They are crispy, hot, and also seasoned very well. Yummy Mummy has its seasoning down, no salt or pepper needed. The potatoes also used some fresh herbs which made a heavy dish a little brighter. I have not had the fries, but I don’t know that I will on future visits after trying the spicy potatoes. The red pepper hummus is good, but did not stand out as much as the wrap or the spicy potatoes. They only have one size for a side and it’s $4. I would like to see a smaller size that can be added to meals rather than having to order the full size version. That said I was glad I tried it and will order it again. The woman at the register was very friendly. Glad this place has moved in downtown, it’s certainly different and they know what they are doing. Recommended.

Mucho Burrito – Menu with Prices – 2210 Bank St, Ottawa

I’d like to start by saying I like spicy food. Really, I do. I put sriracha on everything, and I’ve ordered (and enjoyed) chicken wings that were so spicy I was required to sign a waiver. With that being said, I didn’t have a great experience here tonight. I got a small burrito and a bag of nacho chips and salsa. On the burrito I got chicken, rice, beans, a bunch of different veggies, cilantro, hot salsa. I asked for hot sauce, as I recently went to the Merivale location and really enjoyed the ghost pepper sauce they use. She put a huge line of it on. Huge. I thought maybe this was a different type of hot sauce than the one they used at Merivale, because there they use a very small amount of it at a time and ask if you want more to make sure they don’t make it too spicy. Sure enough it was the same sauce. It was excessively hot. As in, I couldn’t finish more than 2 bites. I downed my entire Jarrito and went up and told the woman it was excessively hot. The woman was argumentative and explained that I asked for hot sauce. I explained that it was too hot and at the other location they use a very small amount, however she just slathered it on. She continued to argue with me and eventually the manager came out and offered to make me a new one, which was good. However, I refused because that seriously took my appetite away. The chips and salsa also weren’t great because they changed the freaking hot salsa. The salsa they have there now is made with fig marmalade, its gross. Why mess with a good thing? I enjoy Mucho Burrito and I’ll probably be back but not to this location.

May Flower Chinese Cuisine – Menu with Prices – 941 W Elliot Rd #6, Chandler

2.0 star rating 6/21/2019 First to Review A small restaurant just behind IHOP, Alma School/Elliot in the Fry’s complex, open from 11AM to 9PM seven days a week. They opened one week ago they said. A small place with 10 booths and 6 tables of 4 seats. Reasonable lunch menu from 11 to 3 for $6.50 to $7.00. They have a Happy Kid’s Meal for $5.85 consisting of 3 choices from a 6 item menu: 7 Chicken Nuggets, 2 Chicken Wings, 2 Crab Rangoon, French Fries, 2 Chicken on a Stick, and Fried or White Rice. They serve 17 spicy dishes for those who like the heat. They also serve wine and beer! Last night we had take-out from them. I met the owner who smiled and shook my hand but did not speak English yet. The young lady cashier and another older woman from the kitchen translated for her. She wanted to give me a free 64 oz. bottle of Pepsi but I told her we do not drink any sodas at home and thanked her for the thought. I ordered Pork Egg Foo Young, and upon eating it at home tried to give it some flavor with salt and pepper and soy sauce but it remained rather tasteless and we ate about half of it. Our dog liked it however. Also ordered General Tso’s Chicken. I asked if it was white meat and she spoke with the man doing the cooking and told me no, but if I wanted it with breast meat they could accommodate me. I asked if they could make it extra spicy and she replied “it is already spicy”. I told her I like spice and to make it more spicy. You guessed it! It was almost without spice. The photo on the back of their menu showed the chicken in the center of a ring of broccoli, but what I received was no broccoli but a few pieces of white onion and red peppers. Once again the tasteless issue reared it’s head. Hardly any flavor, little to no hot spicy taste and the pieces of chicken were cut small, and were tough and chewy, but abundant. We ate less than half of this dish, which salt and black pepper and soy sauce could not redeem it. I hated to give them a low rating but the food was 2 star and an extra 1/2 star for the friendly service. Doug T. voted for this review Useful 1 Funny 1 Cool 1

Pineapple Eddie Southern Bistro – Menu with Prices – 1402 W 10th St, Erie

I so wanted to love this place, but I just can’t. The hostess was super friendly, the cocktails were fine. That’s where it all ended. I was disappointed in the rest of the meal, which was Caesar salad, wings, shrimp & grits, and red velvet cake. The salad came out moments after I ordered it, the lettuce seemed slimy and the dressing something off of a store shelf The appetizer wings were so small that I could barely hold them. The tasted good, but were by far the smallest wings I have ever seen Then the implosion happened. I ordered shrimp & grits, and asked the waitress if there are Cajun spices on it. Her response was, it’s a very mild dish so asked if they could make it spicy. WTF – the cook (notice I didn’t say chef) decided to make the sauce with ghost peppers, and sent it out without informing the waitress or me. When I informed the waitress I couldn’t eat the meal she took it back and I could hear her talking to the cook in back. She came back to me and stated that they made the sauce with ghost peppers. Her words were, ” that is not spicy, that is we’re trying to kill you!” Two bottles of water later, an upset stomach, and a mouth still on fire, I ordered a desert And out came this “homemade” red velvet cake. I was hoping for some redemption. A southern themed restaurant, a red velvet cake, maybe this would work itself out. Nope! Another disappointment. In the end, the waitress stated that she knew I was upset with my $19 shrimp & grits and offered to take something off of the bill. I ordered it, even though the cook went overboard, I told her that it was partially my fault and I was OK with my mistake. She came back to the table, handed me the bill and stated, I took care of the shrimp & grits. I felt it not necessary but acceptable since I ate three small bites before I sent it back. Turns out that she took $2.85 off the $19 meal. Why bother? How about hand me the bill and wish me well? It was one of the worst meals I have had in Erie.

Siam Thai Cuisine – Menu with Prices – 915 Hillcrest Rd Suite C, Mobile

Food was alright, however, I asked my server which of their curries was the hottest (red curry, could’ve fooled me) and requested “five star” spice level on said item which is supposed to be as spicy as they offer. I received the mildest curry I have ever eaten in my life; my grandmother would probably have loved it but I went to a Thai restaurant specifically for something very spicy. It did not taste right to have such a pathetically mild curry. I informed my waitress and she provided me with a particularly mild crock of red pepper flakes to add my meal which I very clearly desired to be very hot before hand. I got somewhat close to the desired level of heat I ordered but the texture of my curry was ruined by the 6 spoonfulls of red pepper flakes I had to add. Regardless of the friendly service and atmosphere, I highly doubt I’ll return. If you are someone who like spicy Thai food, look elsewhere; I was sorely disappointed.

Grandma Wan Thai Food Truck – Menu with Prices – 2711 Manatee Ave E, Bradenton

Grandma Wan found a great little spot. We ordered the Wednesday special Pad Thai, Thai Basil Stir-Fry w/ rice and two orders of Thai chicken skewers. Everything was delicious. My wife is Thai and we had something we’ve never had before, the fried rice patties. They were really good! We drizzled the homemade pepper sauce over it (fresh peppers and fish sauce with something else maybe) was very tasty if you’re not afraid of a little heat. We finished up with the fried banana with honey and sesame seeds over ice cream. Perfect to cool off the palate. If you enjoy Thai food or are looking for something new you should try the food here!

Magic Thailand Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 842 Logan Ave, Winnipeg

Yum, yum, yum! Don’t let the location and the exterior fool you – the inside is packed with diners and the food is great! I’ve been looking for another Thai place to go to since Vanxai’s on St. Mary’s has been disappointing me in the last few visits. I haven’t been back to Magic Thailand in years because the location isn’t the most convenient. It is located in an industrial area and the exterior is not much to be desired but inside, the restaurant has been recently renovated. Nothing amazing, but it’s warm, bright and inviting with lots of tables inside to seat couples to large groups. As with most Thai places you can order your food from a heat scale from 1-10. I have a high heat tolerance for spicy foods so here a 5 is true mid-range for someone who eats spicy food. I tried everything at a 5 as the other people eating with me didn’t eat that spicy. Personally, I would order about a 7 for a real nice kick. For others who don’t eat spicy, I would suggest a 2 or 3. The Thai Chicken Skewers ($8.50 for 3) and it comes with a spicy peanut sauce. Not my fave appy as it’s just grilled chicken breast that didn’t have much flavour on it’s own so you have to rely on the peanut sauce which was very yum. For this price, I wouldn’t order it again as I’d rather get another entree dish to share instead. I really liked their “pad thai” with shrimp which was $10.50 and it comes with a side of bean sprouts. At a level 5, the spiciness definitely came through so I’d keep this as a 5. Great flavour in the pad thai mix. The green coconut curry stir fry with chicken ($9.50) had lots of vegetables in the creamy coconut sauce. Not the best green curry I’ve had but it was good. At a level 5 spice, it was okay, I’d definitely up it to a 7 or 8 as the heat gets a bit lost in the sauce. The Matsaman – potato, onions, red peppers, basil, peanuts with chicken ($10.50) is a great dish if you like more peanut flavour and heartiness of potatoes. Food service is fast but table side service is okay as you kind of have to flag down people to get more things. Overall, great place for Thai food!

Creeks, Bar and Grille – Menu with Prices – 4935 E Lake Rd, Erie

Love the Filet with the choice of dipping sauces. I was so excited to see you had bernaise sauce as most restaurants don’t serve it with their Filets. I was very disappointed in it, though. It was filled with chunks of what I think were tomatoes and other spices making it have a very strong taste. Not a true creamy bernaise. Please, please serve a basic bernaise! The honey bourbon sauce is great! My husband ordered the special of “stuffed peppers” expecting at least two peppers. There was only one small pepper, so special should not advertise in the plural! His mashed potatoes were cold and he had to ask for them to be heated. Waitress brought out a new order of hot mashed potatoes. We have eaten here several times since it became Creeks and will return.

The Daily Special Restaurant Menu with Prices 201 N Charles St, Baltimore

I have been meaning to try this place out but there limited hours make it hard. Not sure why they do not do a breakfast. Could be a simple as offering some bagels with some cream cheese and maybe lox. They do have lunch with either salad or bowl. Place is kosher and leans toward Mediterranean. I got the med chicken Bowl which was a bit pricey but got fair amount of food and a real bowl. Were nice enough to get a cup of ice as the cokes were recently put out and not very cold. The food itself was fairly bland as did not get much red pepper flavor from sauce and should have asked for more sauce as couscous was dry. The sides and chicken all could have used more salt and olive oil. Realize competing against places that use tons of butter which not possible in meat kosher place but does not excuse having raw peppers in a hot bowl. I might come back to try something else as hate to write off place after one dish.

Sub Society Incredible Sandwiches – Menu with Prices – 25364 Crenshaw Blvd, Torrance

Torrance Food Crawl #379 Sub Society Incredible Sandwiches is an upscale sub shop, with prices higher than what Subway would charge, but a quality level that easily outshines anything that lesser sandwich shops offer. Each of the subs I’ve had here tastes the way I expected them to taste, in the best possible way. Italian subs tasted like Italian subs, a Banh mi tasted like I would expect a Vietnamese Banh mi to taste. The Wise Guy (http://bit.ly/2Lw617Q) was a classic Italian sub with a lot of meat, ham, salami, mortadella, and capicola, along with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, provolone cheese, a very tasty Italian dressing, and pepperoncinis on the side. This was a sandwich that started with a classic taste of Italian goodness, which didn’t wear out it’s welcome all the way to the last bite. Adding the peppers to the sandwich nicely upped the spice level. The Threat Level Midnight (http://bit.ly/2LrvsaL) is their spiciest sandwich, with spicy turkey, habanero slaw, cilantro, black pepper, and ghost pepper jack. The turkey was plentiful and very good, surprisingly fresh-tasting, and not on the dry side. The cilantro and chili initially added a little bit of spiciness, and there was a delayed response to the habanero chilis, enough to make my nose run a little but not enough to make me cry. This isn’t a spicy “challenge” type sandwich, but rather a very spicy turkey sandwich. The slaw added some coolness, mixing the hot peppers with a cool dressing and vegetables. The bread is baked fresh daily and was of very good quality. The Chicken Banh Mi (http://bit.ly/2XZhgaz) was on a nicely baked baguette, with the sliced cucumbers and carrots providing a satisfying crunch. The habanero pineapple teriyaki sauce and cilantro added a little bit more spice than most Banh mi’s I’ve had, but I liked it. A regular sauce and a peanut sauce were provided on the side, and I thought I would like the peanut sauce better, but the regular sauce was the better addition to the sandwich. The first taste of the Brazilian Pot Roast (http://bit.ly/2XWyUkp) sandwich emitted a nice strong pot roast flavor. The description of the sandwich says that beef tri-tip is slow-roasted for six hours and I believe that because the beef is tender, easily breaking apart, and very good tasting. The beef sauces and provolone and parmesan cheeses melt into the meat and baguette bun. The sandwich was very large and could easily feed two people unless you’re really hungry and want to keep it all to yourself. At one of my visits, there was someone in front of me who had ordered a bunch of sandwiches for a party, so it took about 15 minutes to fulfill my takeout order. When I got home I found out that they had included a complimentary cup of Tomato Bisque (http://bit.ly/2SoazOn), slightly peppery but very good, which was a nice gesture. Drinks are available only in glass bottles, even the water, making a strong statement that recycling is important and not just some feel-good slogan. There are some good lemonades (http://bit.ly/2Gm229Q) but a lack of sugar-free choices (excepting the bottled water). Sub Society is tucked away inside the Rolling Hills Plaza, and the easiest way to find it is to head for the main entrance of the nearby Stonefire Grill, and if you turn around, you’ll see Sub Society. Sub Society has only been open a little over a month as I write this and there probably will be changes as they find their footing, but I think they’ve found their market niche, that is, people searching for high-quality sandwiches for their lunch or dinner.
