Is Cupid now writing Yelp reviews? Thanks to cherub-like Yelpers spreading 5-star arrows of amour for the trendy French-inspired Sparrow Bakery in Bend, I was seemingly charmed even before an introduction. The adoration was real. My yearning unquenched. Oh, little Sparrow, let me meet thee before I count the ways that I love thee. The line was real. Was the passion? One brunch would decide. Aye, the Ocean Roll was indeed a swirling tide of sweet cardamom baked into crisp waves of enchantment. There might be better baked buns for breakfast, but you’re in Bend … and this truly might be the best. A Croissant Sandwich with Poached Egg wasn’t nearly as dreamy, but it was legit … and filling. I wouldn’t hesitate to order one again to see if we can move our relationship beyond friendship to fondness. A creamy ending came in the form of a luscious Eclair oozing heavy Bavarian Cream. You don’t have to make this your breakfast dessert, but your sweet tooth will surely be satiated once it touches your lips. No need to be coy about this. Bend to cupid’s arrow, more straight than narrow, for zealous love of a Sparrow.

Riff Craft Food & Beverage Restaurant and Cold Brewed Coffee House Menu with Prices 555 NW Arizona Ave Suite 30, Bend

This is a bright, cheerful restaurant that looked very promising. When we arrived, we ran into friends who had already been served, so we got a look at the Pork and Brie sandwich and the Forager Bowl, which appeared fabulous. The beer selection is very limited, not even a real IPA, and the beer and wine portions are small. But OK we were here for the food, and ordered two Pork and Brie sandwiches between the three of us. The roll, being a Sparrow’s Hoagie Roll, is the most perfect vehicle for a sandwich you will ever experience, light, crusty, delicious. There should be a Noble Prize for Baking, just so it can be awarded to Sparrow for this roll. The pork was very nice, although I’d be more inclined to call it ham. The brie, well, there wasn’t a lot, so I don’t have much to say. Arugula is not my favorite, but it made a fine green for the serving. And the potato chips were wonderful. But, while not mentioned in the menu, both halves of the roll were slathered with the most intensely sweet “pepper jam” or something, hard to say since all you could taste was sweetness. The sandwich is way too sweet even for a dessert, and completely ruined the experience for me, although one of my companions said they liked the jam. I ate 1/2 of the sandwich after removing one side of the sticky, bright red roll, so ended up with a meager meal indeed. It could have been a great sandwich, without the jam.

Sparrow Meat Market Menu with Prices 407 N 5th Ave, Ann Arbor

I’ve always loved sparrow for high quality meat despite slightly higher prices, but they just recently they did me wrong. I’ve bought skin on pork belly for a long time from Sparrow, i believe it usually arrives on Monday and they sell it for 1.99 a pound. I showed up today to get some and it was 3.99. After asking a worker why they marked it up he told me it was always that price… which I know isn’t true. However, I care more about quality than price (why I’m shopping at sparrow in the first place) so i went on to buy my skin on pork belly as I planned. When I got home, I found out the butcher had just cut off the very top lean layer of the belly with the skin, and left the rest of it to be sold as pork belly w/o skin. Let me rephrase that, my pork belly I purchased had no fat, none, it looked like a tenderloin. I am confused what I should do with this very lean belly. This is not the way that sparrow used to serve their skin on pork belly. I bought a two pound section 10 days ago and it was a nice fatty pork belly with the skin on; it was also $2 a pound, but that’s not the point. Long story short I am very disappointed in the product I purchased from Sparrow today.

Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop Menu with Prices 160 W 91st Ave, Anchorage

This was my first visit to this location and I’m stoked; it is way convenient for bush travel. My life doesn’t take me downtown much anymore so I’m glad for this outpost. I took a nice slow look at all of their options and chose to have a breakfast sandwich because the display model was bursting with greens. The bun was stuffed with poppyseeds and was a tad sweet. The sandwich was bursting with tender greens but the portion of avocado was a little thin. The surprise for me was the poached egg in the middle. I thought it was a mozzarella ball and wasn’t paying attention; it burst bright yellow egg all over my face, arm, hands, and clothes. Hours later, I am still finding bits of dried egg yolk stuck to me. That said, it was delicious! Amazing! Complex! Scrumptious! I also got a sweet potato cupcake to go. I wasn’t impressed on first bite, but this was a complicated creation and it was better to get a bite with all the components together. It was stuffed with bourbon-soaked pecans that were reminiscent of pecan pie. The booze flavor and kick were present. The frosting was thick and creamy and not sweet, which helped balance out the cupcake and the stuffing. I don’t buy sweet baked goods often, but this cupcake was worth the price.

Jax Bread Co – Menu with Prices – 8380 Baymeadows Rd #5, Jacksonville

Jax Bread is a hidden gem. You read correctly: Jax Bread is a hidden gem. First, despite having GPS I always second guess it. On my drive to Jax Bread, I thought, surely this place isn’t in this plaza (not that there was anything wrong with that plaza, but it was tucked away and didn’t see the sign). Anyway, I pulled up and walked in. The first thing you’ll notice is the sweet smell of baked goods: bread, bagels, croissants, pastries, the list goes on and on. This brought me back to the days when I worked at an Italian bakery and loved the fact that when I came home my hair would smell like fresh bread (it may seem odd to some, but I love food so much I’m ok smelling like a fresh loaf of bread, I digress). The second thing you’ll notice is there aren’t a ton of seats/tables. I’m not sure when their peak times are, but can imagine most will need to get their items to go. I opted to order a breakfast sandwich (croissant, bacon, scrambled eggs, Brie, and avocado) and a cup of joe. If you’re wanting a latte/espresso beverage, this may not be the place for you. The breakfast sandwich came out and it was like a glorious breakfast mountain. It was HUGE. So typically I always need to ketchup for my eggs, but to me the test of a good breakfast sandwich is if I can eat it without ketchup. This was a sandwich you’ll need to use a fork and knife, because it was that large. I bit into the croissant and behold ultimate nirvana. It was as if the breakfast gods were shining down on me. Flakey, buttery, crispy, doughy deliciousness. The eggs were warm and fluffy with melted ooey gooey Brie, salty bacon, and ripe avocado in every bite. No ketchup necessary. Seriously. Do yourself a favor, run, don’t walk to Jax Bread. This is the cat’s meow and I can already tell I’ll be a repeat customer. Pros: -Quality of croissant -Downright delicious breakfast sandwich -Variety of baked goods Cons: -None, my sandwich was beyond delicious Tips: Come here, eat here, bring your friends, you won’t be sorry.

Big Ed’s Artisan Bread Menu with Prices 601 NE 1st St, Bend

Stopped into the Hop & Brew in Sisters for coffee with my son who is hiking the PCT. After taking him back to the trailhead, I came back to try the grilled tuna sandwich, which is a favorite of mine. When the server brought the sandwich, I let out a little groan because it was on a big roll and I was afraid it would be too much bread. I took one bite and OMG, best grilled tuna I’ve ever had (and I’m kinda old) and the roll was the best roll I’ve ever bitten into. So, this review is as much about Big Ed’s Bakery in Bend as it is about Hop & Brew. The crust and texture of this toasted roll was incredible. On top of that, the tuna salad was delicious as well. People were friendly. Place is clean. I live in Portland but I doubt if I’d drive through Sisters without stopping in for another sandwich…even if I had to wait a while for my food. And, in Bend, I will definitely go to Big Ed’s.

The Boca Beach House Menu with Prices 887 E Palmetto Park Rd, Boca Raton

I ate here in early July while visiting family (wrote a review that night but it never posted? Curious) We arrived Tuesday morning around 9- there was only two tables with a total of 4 people in the restaurant. The waitress took quite a while to even come over to us ( we let her know we would be sitting outside) She did apologize for taking so long – the real problem here is the food and the prices. This restaurant charges resort pricing for diner style breakfast- the location, the decor nor the food is worth $20 for an omelette. It’s outrageous- but being short on time we ordered. I ordered Eggs Florentine- it was the most disgusting breakfast I have ever had. I have never had food sent back and taken of the bill- this was the first time. The poached egg was freezing cold- the cook must have poached them at an earlier time and then refrigerated to be re-heated. Well the cook forgot and it came out cold, on a bed of cold- hardly cooked spinach, no tomato, on a cold English muffin. To make it worse it was drowning in the most awful and cold hollandaise sauce I have ever had. The waitress was at least nice about removing the item from the bill. I would never return and would direct my local or tourist friends to a number of breakfast places with better prices and MUCH better food.

PureBread Deli – Menu with Prices – 4801 Limestone Rd, Wilmington

Love this place for a quick , fresh lunch that wont have you ready for a nap. Yummy ingredients. The ability to create your own sandwich which for a foodie like me is a BIG deal. Mix and match different sandwiches to make something that is truly your own. My go to is lettuce, cheese, bacon, mayo and avocado on focaccia bread. I have just started trying their salad menu starting with the spinach salad and am only disappointed it took me so long to try one (I was just so hung up on the diy sandwich thing). They also do a good breakfast sandwich / wrap. Even their coffee and baked good are awesome (especially the pound cake muffin aka cake for breakfast!). Very well rounded establishment plus cute puppies on the wall !

lou nashville – Menu with Prices – 1304 McGavock Pk, Nashville

I met two friends for brunch at Lou yesterday, and we all really enjoyed our visit! We had a reservation (I’d recommend this if you don’t want to wait, because Lou is tiny) for 11 and were seated immediately. Lou focuses on brunch and natural wine. (Nashville’s just started to get into the natural wine trend, so in case you haven’t learned about it yet it’s just wine made with minimal chemical and technological intervention; sort of going back to how our great-grandparents’ wine would have been made.) Both of my friends got a glass of their “breakfast wine,” their discounted by-the-glass wine derived from unfinished bottles from the day before ($8). I got a glass of one of their skin-contact (or orange) wines for about $14/glass. The wine selection was great! One of my friends got the chorizo, potato, and egg sandwich with guajillo-cocoa chili paste, preserved lemon aioli, cotija cheese, and lacto fermented hot sauce, which she liked (but it was so much food she took the second half of the sandwich home)! My other friend tried the baked egg cazuela with chorizo, mashed leeks, fermented chili yogurt, potato crust, with side salad and lacto fermented hot sauce. I’ve always seen this dish served in the cazuela/baking dish, but the look of the baked egg cazuela was very modern and tasty-looking. My friend liked her dish as well (especially the fermented chili yogurt served with it). I had the poached eggs and broccolini with mint yogurt, chili oil, chermoula, walnut dukkah, and charred sourdough. This dish is pretty much exactly what I want for breakfast or brunch. The chili oil was spicy, but the mint yogurt was cooling. The eggs were beautifully poached (I’m not a fan of cooked-though yolk, so I notice when eggs are overcooked). I loved the way the broccolini was cooked. And the sourdough (which I think they get locally from Rolf & Daughters/Folk?) was excellent and perfectly charred. The decor is charming (if you ate at the restaurant when it was Fort Louise it looks about the same), and the service was good. They don’t have enough parking, so be prepared to find street parking and walk. My only real complaint is that the restaurant is SO loud that my friends and I (sitting at a small, round table) had a hard time hearing each other! I’m not sure if there’s anything you can do about that (the restaurant is in an old house that is very small), but it did affect our experience a bit (it was the only real complaint we had about our experience). This female-owned restaurant (owned by Mailea Weger of LA’s Gjusta/Gjelina) has a great pastry program (Sasha Piligian from LA’s Sqirl), and it definitely adds something to Nashville’s food scene. A lot of Nashville’s newer restaurants are expansions of restaurants in other cities, but Lou feels fresh and different. And as a person that immediately jumped on the natural wine bandwagon when I learned about it, I’m excited to have a restaurant with a natural wine-focused wine list. Great first experience. Lou’s opening will definitely drag me to East Nashville more often.

Midtown Market Menu with Prices 1709 NE 6th St, Bend

Food and drink is one of life’s finest pleasures. Although I prefer to drink my carbs (beer!), I will make an exception, if the carbs are worth it. I’m new to Bend, so I shamelessly use Yelp! to see what’s good, and find new places to try. I’m a 10 minute stroll from this place, so I decided to go for it and check it out…and I’ve been there three times in the past week. I was looking for beer and a sandwich to go with the bag of chips I had, and I definitely found what was looking for. I ordered half a turkey sandwich on wheat (made by the owner, Bill), and discovered a nice selection of juices, root and ginger beer, sparkling water, wine both white and red, and lots of beers I’ve never seen or tried! I came back this morning hungry, and though I mainly came in for breakfast, I couldn’t help but check the beer cooler, and found a Belgian Dubbel from Block 15! There were only four left, so it was hard to not want to buy them all. I don’t often eat bagels, but if I’m going to eat 300 calories of carbs, I’m going to make it worth it. Although they don’t make breakfast sandwiches with eggs, this bagel sandwich with lox, capers, lemon and smoked salmon. I had it on my choice of bagel, and braced myself for that epic foodie moment that came after one bite – everything else in the universe disappears for a moment, and there is just you, and the amazing flavor! You can actually do a bunch of food shopping here too – they offer their baked goods frozen, along with fresh greens, quality produce like onions, squash, and garlic! Nothing bad to say about this place.

Gold Standard Cafe – Menu with Prices – 1318 South St, Philadelphia

Took my daughter here for breakfast on the last day of UArts weekend. She is a freshman there. What a great find! The vibe was very nice. Relaxed, friendly. We stayed there for about 15 minutes after paying the bill because it was such a zen-like environment. The service was very prompt and friendly. The food was fantastic! My daughter had the avocado toast with two poached eggs and I had the fried egg sandwich on a Kaiser roll. We also got a side of breakfast potatoes, since we think this separates the good breakfast spots from the fabulous ones. This place was fabulous. Prices were also very reasonable, especially given their location in Center City. My daughter is already planning on introducing her friends to this wonderful place. Highly recommend!

Panadería El Quetzal – Menu with Prices – 445 Hartford Ave, Providence

tiny Guatemalan bakery that sells a variety of breads, sweet baked treats, etc. the bakery also doubles as a place to buy snacks, certain groceries, and Guatemalan home remedies. the bakery is family-run, full of customer, and full of delicious baked aromas. so grab a number, wait for it to be called, and order away. they box everything up for you. understanding/speaking Spanish is going to make your life much easier in terms of ordering baked goods. the breads, cookies, and other treats feel and smell freshly baked and are tasty. you can pick up some authentic Guatemalan baked eats for breakfast, to pair with coffee, or to snack on. they also have pre-packaged spice and herb items like peppers (ancho, chipotle, and a whole lot more). the prices are good–as they are a fraction of what you’d pay at Whole Foods or any gentrifying supermarket. the snacks and chips game here is extraordinary! if you are familiar with the Diana brand of snacks–they have a ton of crunchy chips, curls, popcorn balls, etc. for your munching delight. the panaderia also sells a variety of TAKIS, the spicy rolled chips by Barcel. the bagged snack selection is on point here. be prepared for lines here bc the baked goods are that good. but lines move fast. and the staff is supernice and patient. drops mic cuz i’m crunching some bags of TAKIS i out zzz

Honeybaked Ham and Cafe – Menu with Prices – 7200 Peach St, Erie

I had no idea that the Honey Baked Han Company had actual delis so when I was looking for a sandwich while working in Erie, I figured I would come and give this place a try. This little shop offers a decent amount of options for a quick lunch while also giving you a place to pickup full desserts and even some big honey baked hams (but like, yum). I ordered a standard honey baked ham sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and some wonderful sauce that made me like the sandwich even more (seriously, it was delicious). The sandwich itself didn’t come with anything else so I picked up a can of sprite ($1.99) and a bag of BBQ chips (I think $1.50) and it made for a pretty filling meal. Overall, if you want a ham sandwich this is probably where you want to go. The place was clean, the food was good, and the prices weren’t bad either. Most important, honey baked ham is deciduous and I’m definitely going to be ordering one for thanksgiving.
