This was the highest rated barbecue joint near my home and I wanted to try this out especially and it did its due diligence. I also came here as a special occasion but left feeling just content. It had a southern flare and savory flavors and overall I wasn’t super impressed. I will most likely not come back but mainly because I prefer a different kind of barbecue experience. Food – Baby back ribs BBQ: I feel like they chose very standard baby back ribs. Even though I realized the size of them is pretty big compared to some of the other BB ribs I’ve tried, overall the flavors were too predictable. The fat to meat ratio was way off to where I felt like I was eating slabs of fat. The meat was tender and somewhat juicy but I felt like the barbecue sauce not really hitting or mixing well with the ribs I was eating. Oh and for some reason our ribs didn’t fall off the bone like I would have hoped. Let’s just say that I was expecting some more messy and slathering of savory and southern flavors but I didn’t really feel it got there. I am a Phil’s BBQ fan from San Diego and this definitely did not hit the mark that I was expecting . Pros: – You can tell this place is the king of ribs for our area and there was a line. – interior reminds me of a small diner (without flashy tacky lights) so if you’re going for a casual date or hangout this is a good joint – overall flavors were tasty and I wouldn’t mind bringing others to give it a try. It just wouldn’t be my next option Cons: – a bit pricier than I would hope. – the restaurant is kind of small so it is a bit of a long wait if you don’t get there at the perfect time. Expect some wait time since people arent the fastest to leave after eating ribs! In the end not every restaurant is a winner in my books even though it had good reviews. Maybe it wasn’t the best day but either way I have a hard time giving it 5 stars. I still enjoyed my meal but not at that price point!

Soul Cal Smokehouse – Menu with Prices – 38 W Victoria St, Santa Barbara

Met some friends at the SB public market for dinner Wednesday night, and decided to eat here. I’m a sucker for smoked bbq, and been wanting to try this place out. I ordered a half pound of smoked baby back ribs, and 20 wings (Wing Wednesday special, $1 per wing) spoke with one of the workers there, and he said they use oak to smoke their meats. He also said that they brine the wings first then smoke them. As an amateur bbq smoker myself, I was excited to try the goods! First up, the baby back ribs. The meat was very tender, one bite and fall off the bone kind of ribs. They dont sauce the ribs up, and have them offered on the side. I chose the spicy bbq and coffee bbq sauces, both were good, but I preferred au natural for the ribs, can get a better taste and smoke flavor, and the ribs didnt disappoint. The smoke wasnt overwhelming, but present. The meat had a good meat/fat ratio which made it tender and succulent. Overall, They were tasty! The only knock I’d have to point out, was that they weren’t hot(temp) enough and was just warm. The wings. Wow. Very delicious and on wednesdays, just $1 per wing! As usual, I opted to have the sauce on the side and glad I went that route! These wings had a slight crisp to it, not too fried crispy, but still a very slight crunch to it. The meat was tender, juicy and HOT(temp) I waited a few mins before I could touch them. The wing sauce on the side was ok, tasted more on the spicier side, and a good compliment to the wings. I ate more than half the wings dry, with no sauce. Overall, I’m Pretty stoked to have this place near my house, and will be back next wednesday for these delicious wings!

Crossroads Bar and Grill Menu with Prices 1255 Barkley Blvd suite 102, Bellingham

I love Barbecue. Not the kind of barbecue that hides behind sauce. I’m talking about smoky, we don’t need no stinkin’ sauce kind of barbecue. Bellingham is pretty short on that kind of barbecue. So I was excited to try Crossroads. I stopped in and ordered the Combo Plate. You can choose between ribs, brisket or pulled pork for meat and you also get two sides. I think the only way to really tell if a place saying they have BBQ is real is to eat the brisket. I needs to be tender, fatty and smokey. If it comes slathered in sauce it isn’t brisket and they don’t know BBQ. So, of course, I ordered the brisket and for the other I went with ribs. For my two sides I got fries and coleslaw. The brisket was better than and I have had in Bellingham. It was tender with just the right amount of fat. It wasn’t fancied up with sauce. It was just salt, pepper and a long smoke. Perfection. The ribs were a bit tough, maybe another hour on the smoker could have done them some good. The flavor though. It was again better than any in Bellingham. I could discern a nice spice rub and there was just a touch of sauce. I didn’t think I liked sauce but this enhanced the ribs so much. It wasn’t overpowering, it was just right. The portions are good. There was enough food for at least two people. I didn’t share. I will be eating this again tomorrow for lunch. The service was nice. I did have a bit of problem with the order but everyone was more than ready to make it right. I would have given the place all the stars but the sides were a real blah. Frozen fries and standard coleslaw. It wasn’t bad it just wasn’t great. I would suggest you try out the barbecue at Crossroads. It’s good.

Dustin’s Bar-B-Q – Menu with Prices – 411 N Wickham Rd, Melbourne

Dustin’s Bar-B-Q is one of the many American barbecue restaurants in Melbourne that nobody really knows is a local joint or another link in a chain of restaurants. I mean the restaurant has the look and feel cookie-cuttered for multiple locations, yet I haven’t seen any other Dustin’s Bar-B-Q’s outside of the one in Melbourne. Nevertheless, the restaurant is more than decent pertaining to what they serve. As mentioned earlier, Dustin’s Bar-B-Q has the same look and feel as a restaurant that is one link in a chain. Think of how Cracker Barrel looks and you’ll get my drift. Rustic decor, high-class picnic tables refurbished for indoor seating, red-and-white checkered tablecloths, the whole look that is stereotypical of Southern hospitality. And top of that, the place (as much as I have seen) is primarily clean. This detail extends to the restrooms too though the occupancy may be a hindrance for women. Ultimately, the food is what makes or breaks any restaurant and Iam happy to report the food here is great. They have many kinds of Southern foods like fried okra, mashed potatoes, sweet corn, cornbreak, biscuits, gravy, turkey, ribs, and the rest of the fixins. All that my crew and I ordered was to point and very delicious. Dustin’s Bar-B-Q gets four out of five stars. The only reason it doesn’t have a perfect score is the last star is dedicated to continuity. If I visit this restaurant probably a couple more times and if receive the same stellar service and great food, I will change my review to a perfect five out of five stars.

Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que – Menu with Prices – 3002 W 47th St, Kansas City

I want to start off by saying I have a deep appreciation for barbecue. I’ve been fortunate to have had some incredible barbecue around this country, and unfortunately I’ve had some terrible barbecue around this country. I always get excited when I’m heading to Kansas City, knowing I’m going to be enjoying some great barbecue. I knew my first stop for barbecue on this trip was going to be Joe’s. The first surprising thing about Joe’s is that it’s inside a gas station. But don’t let that deter you. You know you’re at the right place when you see the enormous line out the door, only to find out that the line wraps around once you get inside the door. After spending an hour in line, I finally got to the front. After changing my mind several times, I settled on a full rack of ribs and a side of onion rings. The onion rings were a last-minute decision because everyone around me seemed to have an order and they looked great. There are two things that I’m on the lookout for whenever I order barbecue. Is it covered in sauce and is it served with white bread? I can tell you that the barbecue here was not covered in sauce and it came with two slices of white bread. These ribs were cooked to perfection. There was just the right amount of rub and smoke. The meat hung on to the bones but came off easily enough. It didn’t just fall off the bones. This is important! If the meat just falls off the bone, they’ve been overcooked. They had a nice pink color with a dark outside, and most importantly the taste was incredible. By the way, the staff here is amazing as well. Anthony Bourdain wrote when he listed Joe’s as one of the 13 places to eat at before you die. “People may disagree on who has the best BBQ. Here, the brisket (particularly the burnt ends), pulled pork, and ribs are all of a quality that meet the high standards even of Kansas City natives. It’s the best BBQ in Kansas City, which makes it the best BBQ in the world. The barbecue here is criminally good.” I couldn’t agree more. The ribs here were truly sublime. I will be making another visit to Joe’s before I leave.

Kimo’s Hawaiian Grill – Menu with Prices – 1575 Fort Campbell Blvd A, Clarksville

In a big hunt to find Hawaiian barbecue in the area, and I came across this spot on Yelp. I am a huge Hawaiian barbecue critic, and I must say this place will be one of my regular lunch choices. – It is not a full service restaurant, but they do provide plenty of seating inside. – My overall review is a 4/5 simply because my chicken didn’t seem fresh as fresh as my short ribs. Short ribs definitely were up to standards. Flavor, fresh off the grill, and quality meat. – Sides were the perfect serving size for a “mini” as it was just for lunch. Rice was great, and the Mac wasn’t too overpowering. I would say the Mac needs more flavor, but it balances everything out so it’s not too much going on. – Such amazing service, I will be back!

County Road Provisions – Menu with Prices – 755 State Rd 207, St. Augustine

Just experienced the best barbecue since leaving Texas! I had ribs, pulled pork, sausage and brisket and this man knows how to barbecue. The ribs were my favorite, very meaty and seasoned with salt and pepper. Very little fat in the pulled pork and the brisket as amazing. If you havenâ??t tried this place you need to and donâ??t be thrown off by his trailer, this is very good!

Undisputed Craft House – Menu with Prices – 1881 Saul Kleinfeld Dr, El Paso

I had read about this place so i was anxious to check it out. I finally did last night…was kinda disappointed. I was given a beer menu that was January’s….then another one for February. Im guessing the beers keep changing because they didnt have the one I picked for January’s menu. Had a young girl that wasnt too helpful in helping me in picking the beers. I asked her what i mostly drank and wanted to see was similar to my choices…she had no answer. She wasnt rude, but not helpful… When I walked in I noticed that the place was too lit. Thought it was bar not a Barnes n Nobles. The crowd seemed pretty chill and the music playing had variety which was a plus. Not a bad place but was expecting a lottle more.

Kody’s Smoke Shack Menu with Prices 3517 Wyoming Blvd NE, Albuquerque

I have been driving by this place for sometime and decided today is the day to try this smoke shack. Ordering the food is pretty easy. They have all kinds of meats to choose from like brisket, ribs, and poultry items. They have a sandwich/wrap menu and a baked potato menu as well. Next store is Desert Valley Brewery. You can order here and hop on over and get yourself a beer. I ordered the three meat combo. I choose Brisket, Baby Back Ribs, and smoked sausage link with a side of fried okra. Their BBQ sauce display needs to be a lot better. It just looked messy and unpresentable. I think that they should work on presentation all around. Everything is served on paper boats (I think that’s what they’re called?) and it seemed a little cafeteria-like. But, the BBQ sauces they have here are definitely on point. Their brisket was flavorful, but a little on the chewy side. Smoked sausage was ok – it didn’t wow me. Their baby back ribs were cooked perfectly. Not a lot of people know this, but a perfectly cooked rib is NOT the fall off the bone kind. When you bite into it, the meat should come clean off the bone, and that is what I experienced here. The service was good and while the ribs were great, everything else was okay. I will give this place another shot some time down the road.

Kava Hookah Lounge – Menu with Prices – 1007 W University Ave, Gainesville

Got there around 230iish and it wasnt packed but there were a decent amount of people there. Unfortunately we had to wait almost 45 mins to get a hookah and there wasnt a place to sit! The music was hip hop and rap (mainly trap) so it was deff a turnt up atmosphere. They didnt sell any drinks though ð??© once we finally did manage to get a seat the hookah was almost out and they were about to close. By that time they were finally coming to give us another cole but it kinda was a waste â?â??? just wish they wouldve had more hookas available and more seating space or even a dance floor maybe. Other then that the atmosphere was nice and we enjoyed the music.

Andrew’s BBQ – Menu with Prices – 730 E Guadalupe Rd #101, Tempe

So I used to come here and eat in college and remember it being ALOT better. I used to get the green chili pulled pork fries. Anyways. I went there and ordered one pound of brisket with a mix of lean and fatty, four pork ribs and one hot link. The hot link was the best of the lot. Juicy, crisp and with just the right amount of smoke. The ribs were below average. The bark was thin with little to no spice and there was zero smoke ring. Little flavor and no smoke flavor in the ribs. The bones were super soft and when I bit into the ribs I bit off chunks of the bone which was quite gross. This has never happened to me at any bbq joint. You can see it in the photos. The brisket was a whole other level of bad. Zero smoke ring, the fat was not rendered no flavor and it seemed like it had a lot of bad smoke in it. It looked like it had been cooked earlier and then reheated or boiled in a bag. Really bad. Overall I was really disappointed and it seems like it has gone downhill. Not sure if they changed ownership. I inquired as to the type of smoker they use and it’s a gas powered southern pride smoker where it just blows heat over wood chips. I was not very impressed with a BBQ restaurant using a gas smoker.

Azuls Taco House – Menu with Prices – 1142 Edgewater St NW, Salem

Very underwhelming. I wouldnt call these authentic, only because I spend a great deal of time in Mexico (about every 6 weeks) and they arent even close. I could see how those who arent familer would call these “street tacos”. I Ordered the shrimp tacos. Tortilla is great and shrimp were cooked nice but wasnt very good. The shrimp is cooked in a style that I would put on a Po’boy, not in a taco. Cabbage “filler” needs some flavor, specifically a little cilantro and onions, maybe a sauce in with it. It had diced tomato that didnt add flavor and were mushy. Didn’t care for chipotle aioli sauce that came on shrimp. Ordered a side of chips and salsa and were served a tiny side of completly stale tostitos style chips and a cilantro tasting salsa that wasnt very good either. We thought it was a free sample till we realized that was the chip order. I would say slightly embarrassed that is what they are offering. I appreciate what they’re attempting but I have had better at various taco trucks around town.

Paw Paw Chico BBQ – Menu with Prices – 26835 Cypresswood Dr #12, Spring

One of the best things about Texas cuisine is the barbecue. I’ve always been willing to wait in line for places like Franklins/Killens but definitely won’t pass up trying new smaller places either. Paw Paw Chicho falls into the latter category, as it’s basically a food truck with some park benches outside. I got a 3 meat plate (sausage, brisket, and ribs). My benchmark for these smaller places is how do they compare to a Rudy’s. I will say that the brisket is not as good as Rudy’s. I got the moist and it was a little dryer than I would have liked. The Sausage was about on par with Rudy’s. The ribs though were excellent, and I could expect these ribs to found at a BBQ place like Franklins/Killens. They were a little sweet on the outside, very smokey, and had a really good texture. I find that a lot of the ‘high-end’ BBQ places are tending to have a moister, almost spongy texture to the rib recently. Paw Paw has a good old fashioned chewy texture but still tender enough to fall off the bone. I would recommend definitely trying the ribs if you came here
