Today when I happened to walk by, I discovered that it was opening day for The Nut House. You can already tell that it is going to be a popular store based on the quality of their products and their competitive prices that are far below those you’ll find in Manhattan! They have a huge selection of nuts (go figure!), dried fruits, specialty items (many from Turkey), very good coffee and friendly service! I also learned that the owner is the owner of a wholesale company named Green Mt Nuts, so he knows the nut business and is able to cut out the middleman and keep his prices low! Unlike many of the other stores on Brighton Beach Avenue, this store looks and feels brand new with bright lighting, air conditioning and a clean modern look. I’m already a fan!

ABC SELECT SPIRITS – Menu with Prices – 303 W Fairview Ave, Montgomery

This store has medium variety of alcohols and mixers in stock. The prices are comparable to other local package stores. And their hours are convenient. My only beef (which is not with the store) is that I have been looking all over for Jack Daniels green apple whiskey. I posted a question here asking if this store has it, and someone replied yes. When I went to the store I found out, they do not carry it.

A-1 Pizza Shop – Menu with Prices – 505 Grand St, New York

This is the owner Charlies son, I am so grateful of all of my customers & the constant business you guys give us. Thank you for all of the positive comments! All the people that left negative comments, I would love if u would come to our store and give us another chance! For the people that are saying our store is dirty and run down, you should look at the grade health inspectors always give us! I will give u guys a hint, it’s always an A or B, but mostly it’s an A. Also, we’ve been in the same location since 1985. If our store wasn’t up to par with the standards of the health department, we would have been shut down already! There are other stores near us that get shut down because of public health hazards and their stores are newly renovated. All in all, thank you to all our customers that love us and give us constant business. Also, whoever had a bad time at our store, give us another chance, we won’t disappoint.

Happy Earth Tea/Leaf Tea Bar – Menu with Prices – 650 South Ave, Rochester

Leaf by Happy Earth Tea Bar is a successful offshoot of the original business on South Avenue in Rochester, NY, which was recently voted one of the world’s 11 best teahouses by CNN.com. Although this business does not have a sit-down tea tasting area, nor as extensive a sense of the culture and history of tea that is conveyed through the South Avenue location, it’s a very pleasant place to get a cup of freshly made tea, or to purchase loose-leaf tea or matcha. It’s a great replacement for Teavana (which was formerly in that spot) and a great example of growth for a beloved local business. When I visited, I purchased some of the “Happy Woman Tea” for my mother, as well as a vegan and gluten-free ginger cookie from Red Fern (delicious as always). My girlfriend had a cup of green tea (don’t remember which kind), which she said was great. The employees were very friendly and personable, and everything in the business was well laid-out and easy to understand. They offer a wide variety of authentic black, green and white teas that appeal to people who really like tea and want to have an interesting new experience of it. If you are in Victor or Eastview Mall (or a huge fan of tea), I highly suggest checking this place out! I’m not sure the menu offers anything in particular that is different from the South Avenue location, plus there isn’t much of a seating space, but it is a great place to get tea while walking through the mall, and it’s a very calm and comfortable place in general. Plus, you’ll be supporting a local business!

Knoxville Center Mall – Menu with Prices – 3001 Knoxville Center Dr, Knoxville

Knoxville Center is DEAD! I can’t believe that people are saying that this place used to be crackin’; where? Knoxville Center is struggling pretty badly. This mall is a 2 stories mall. Plenty of room. The lack of stores that this mall has in incredibly disappointing. I have never walked into a mall and there were only 3-4 stores in business! Yes, you heard me right. There was a Jewelry store, a Hot Topic, and a Bath and Body Works. That was IT! Knoxville Center is a big mall that offers 125 (empty) stores. Sadly, the majority of the chain stores have left this mall. The recent store that just left was Victoria Secret. Many of the complaints from business owners are that there are no customers that are coming through and buying anything. The lack of customers are hurting business owners-How are they supposed to make money!? When you go upstairs you will notice a small food court that only has one of the food vendors opened at this time. It was a decent burger joint, but nothing to brag about. It’s very sad to see what a good shopping mall get into disarray was once. Shocking! The only store that I know for sure that will always stay standing is the Belk, at that is because Belk has bought their building. My hopes are that someone takes over this property and reinvent shopping in East Knoxville.

Virginia ABC – Menu with Prices – 10872 Warwick Blvd, Newport News

Tiny little liquor store next door to Food Lion. Despite its small size, I’ve always been able to find any staple we need here – and with the grocery store right next door, you can hop over to pick up any additional mixers/fruit/etc. easily. The staff here is always nice and offers to help me find what I’m looking for every time I enter (unlike other ABC stores where they basically ignore you until you pay).

Josie’s Sweets and Treats – Menu with Prices – 2897 W Liberty Ave, Pittsburgh

I saw the sign for grand opening on Saturday. I left early today to check out this new bakery. It’s took over the old Sweets and Treats location in Dormont on West Liberty Avenue. First, this owner is facing some of the same challenges as the previous owner, Daarko. There is on-street parking, which means you pay a meter and walk across to the bakery. Your other option is to pay for parking in the lot next to R.B.’s Pizza, formerly Joe & Pie). Either way, you’re still crossing four lanes of insanely busy traffic on West Liberty Avenue. God help you if you are balancing more than one baked good back to your car, and/or have kids in tow. Use the crosswalk, and pray no one blows the light. Style-wise, the bakery is decorated somewhat similar to the previous bakery, but the actual furnishings are different. I walked in, the only customer, smiled and said hi. The lady behind the counter, while polite, was not the warm, outgoing owner that Daarko (previous owner) was. She stated hi, and asked what she could get me. I browsed the cupcake and brownie case, which is almost directly across from the door. I asked what they were, and the prices. The woman asked which one. I said all. She apologized as she went for a list, and read each one. The peanut butter cupcakes were $1.79/each. They were chocolate cake, with a very small dollop of peanut butter filling and topped with peanut butter flavored buttercream frosting. I got one, and also a slice of vegan banana bread (I know a vegan, so I’m always on the lookout for treats she can eat). The woman commented she made them for (last) Saturday, the grand opening. Oh geez! I was hoping they weren’t dry. It was $1, so I took a chance. Still, $1 for 4-day old banana bread (assuming she made them early Saturday morning)? Not good. Some of the cupcakes were individually packaged, and labeled with a letter. I asked her what E meant. She said it was F, for Filled, and P, for Plain. She said her young kids helped label. Good for her! What a great bonding family experience! She sells cookies (2/$6), coffee, and icecream. I asked the woman, who never introduced herself, if she was the owner. She was. I asked her what made her decide to open a bakery. Life-long dream? Nope. She lost her job just before Christmas, and decided she didn’t want to work for anyone, and always wanted to open her own business. The store was already set up to function as a bakery, so she figured it would be easy, I guess. She (Josie? I mean she could have named it after her mother, kid, or cat) was polite and responsive, but a bit disorganized. Everything was not labeled what the item was, or with the price. She kept referring to a list. Ok, her business is only 4 days old. She’s working out the kinks. She’s married, and has kids to boot. I get it. But hey, she’s trying her dream of being a business owner, so kudos to her. The cupcake’s frosting wasn’t doing well in my car, so I ate it 15 minutes later. It was dry, had a rather rough texture, had a nickel-size dollop of peanut butter filling, and buttercream frosting. I wondered if the owner made these for her grand opening, too. It tasted okay. I liked a fine texture in cakes and cupcakes, so I use sifted pastry flour and sift it more. I was not impressed with the frosting. It was not the texture one would expect of buttercream, and very bland. I did get a taste of the vegan banana bread. The consensus was that it was dry and tasted okay; nothing special. I like moist, flavorful banana bread with nuts (I don’t have allergies, and I’m not a vegan/vegetarian or pescatarian). I love biscotti. She sells small (mini) biscotti, too. They’re $.75/each piece, but sold in bags of 4. Pricey! I make my own; they’re so easy, and impress the heck out of people. Bottom line: nice, polite owner. Bakery on a very busy street, comes complete with parking headaches, and lugging stuff across said very busy street. Baked goods I had were dry. And we

Donuts House – Menu with Prices – 5040 N Tarrant Pkwy #108, Fort Worth

I have gone here more times than I would like to count in the last year because it’s next to my business and very convenient. Never, not once, have I had a stale donut here. They are light and fluffy and the sausage rolls are always hot and fresh. Sometimes I go early morning and sometimes right before closing and quality is always consistent. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I am put off by the tip jar. I don’t mind tipping for above and beyond service and while the service is always fast, it’s not overly friendly like other donut stores and unlike other donut stores, then NEVER give away free donut holes. This is the only donut place I’ve ever been to (besides KK) that doesn’t throw in an extra goodie for a regular customer. Maybe I’d place a tip in the jar if I got that kind of service. LOVE the donuts though!

Crumbl Cookies – Gilbert – Menu with Prices – 2743 S Market St #104, Gilbert

Have never been here before. But it was talked up by several people. Went in and was shocked by their prices almost $4 for a cookie. We asked about nuts since our kids have but allergies and they said only 2 of them have nuts in them but the facility does have nuts in it (which we totally understand). However, I watched the girl put all of them in the box with the same spatula (cross contaminating all of them). We asked if we could swap out our single cookie in a small box for a different one since we had not taken position of the box yet and the girl said yes. She kept the small box and handed us a cookie in a small bag instead. So we paid for the stupid box and did not even get it. And the frosting was smashed all over the bag. When we tried the sugar cookie it was nothing like Sweetcakes Cookies in Mesa (soft and creamy). It was dry and lacked cookie flavor. Lady who looked like the owner or manager in (round frame eye glasses) did not interact with customers and seemed like she did not want to be there. She was also the person who told the employee to put our replacement cookie in a bag and not give us the box.

Virginia ABC – Menu with Prices – 1217 W Broad St, Richmond

Small, clean store with your typical selection of spirits. Staff are helpful and efficient. For those of you unfamiliar with Virginia laws regarding alcohol, you can only buy spirits at a Virginia ABC store. No liquor sales at grocery stores or convenience stores.

Franz Bakery Outlet – Menu with Prices – 10014 Pacific Ave S, Tacoma

Awesome place to get deeply discounted bread and baked items. When I stop by here I get THREE loaves of my favorite sourdough bread for $5. I pay $5 per ONE loaf at other stores. Aisles and bread racks are smartly located to get in and out real quick. The only downside to this store is the location. It’s in a very sketchy part of town off the avenue. Keep a close eye on your car while you are inside and be prepared to shew off vagrants and riff-raff hitting you up for spare change.

Sprouts Farmers Market – Menu with Prices – 1240 S Signal Butte Rd, Mesa

Sprouts tend to be on the smaller side of grocery stores, more along the lines of a neighborhood Walmart. This location is no exception to the size rule. It is a brand new location having opened in the past couple months so everything is super clean, very new and still beautiful. This location has an outside enclosed seating area as part of its little cafe eat in area. The store is laid out pretty nicely in regard to shopping. At the front you have thd bread section, then the deli area, the fresh meat area, then produce, then freezer area on the outside perimeter. In the center area you have bulk goods, additional produce. In a corner on the opposite side of the front of the store you have the section for cleaning, beauty, etc. Next to the freezer area is the section for dry goods. The store was very clean, everyone seemed to be doing their assigned responsibilities, and everyone appeared happy. I needed assistance finding some things and the employees were cheerfully helpful. I found the prices to be on the higher side for many of the exact same product at other stores. I really dislike when stores do this. Overall everything was very fresh. I still needed to go to another store to finish shopping for additional items I needed or that that just didn’t carry due to their smaller store footprint.

Walmart Bakery Menu with Prices 8300 W Overland Rd, Boise

A 5 star gas station? YES! Imagine walking into your favorite go to gas station. You walk in, get a pop or maybe a snack and you get to the register and you pay for your items. You know that you are paying higher prices than you could if you went to a big box grocery store, but it’s “convenient”, right? Well, think about paying the “Everyday Low Price” of Walmart inside that “convenient” store. That’s right, at Walmart’s fuel station you get Walmart prices… Need milk? $1.88 not $2.99 like other stores! Also, they have fun stuff from the main store such as: Deli food, yogurts, eggs, bakery items– all at the low Walmart price. They have everything that traditional stations have plus more, but lower prices. I am a fan of Walmart Fuel Stations!
