THE GOTO for some sashimi bowl. Forget all the poke bowl with their chopped fish. These thick generous slices on the sashimi bowl is legit. We get our sushi fix for dinner, now that it’s not as feasible to omakase on random weeknights (being parents & all). Also, it’s a great place to pickup quality food when when family & friends are over. kids approved I’m always ordering All salmon (customized to include the veggies/ toppings) for myself, the extra salmon sashimi bowl (about $3 more) for the husband, & my kids get the yellowtail collar. They love it, and always by bummed when it’s sold out. The baked salmon is a great alternative , & they’ve tried the chicken bowl. Great portions, quality ingredients, and well priced. All of it We’ve gotten the chirashj bowl, & actually a Fav if my mom’s. It includes all the fish they sell- salmon, tuna, albacore, butterfish, scoop of spicy tuna. She does say the salmon is her Fav, tho!! So, Thinking she prefers the salmon bowl, that’s what I ordered today. Then she wonders where the other fish are. Hahahaa My fav touch is the sauces offered. That house garlic is amazing, & you can’t go wrong with the “good sauce”. I truly like the ponzu they provide with the yellow tail collar. Wish my kids can enjoy it too, but they’re always looking for teriyaki. Haha They also have rolls, burritos, ramen, other cooked proteins. Plenty of seating, large parking lot (that can get crowded), space is clean. Also, to attest to the customer service, once my order was done wrong. They more than made up for it! Thank you THE GOOD FISH!

Sushi Sasabune – Menu with Prices – 101 N Brand Blvd #220, Glendale

Excellent melt in your mouth sushi! Reminds me of Sugar Fish. My coworker was saying how this was one of his favorite sushi places, but was a bit fancy. The lunch specials are pretty good though – although he said the prices went up. There’s two lunch specials, one that’s $23 and one that’s $28. We got the $28 which include sashimi over rice, and we all got the tuna because my coworker said it was particularly good here. It came with miso soup, seaweed salad and cucumbers, three sushi rolls – salmon, tuna and albacore, the sashimi on rice – could get salmon, tuna or albacore and the crab handroll. All were REALLY delicious and like I said, melts in your mouth. The rice in the sashimi bowl was really fresh as well. Service was good and the food came out quickly.

Kakurega: Sushi Tapas Sake – Menu with Prices – 2574 Newport Blvd, Costa Mesa

I’ve been on the hunt for good affordable sushi in the OC area and as of today Kakurega is the best one I’ve found. My only expectations from a sushi joint is fresh fish, good ratio/portions and reasonable prices. Kakurega meets all those requirements! They serve both traditional sushi/nigiri as well as some more hipster versions of sashimi. We ordered all the usual fish picks: bluefin toro, yellowtail, yellowtail toro, salmon, scallop, eel, albacore. We also got spicy tuna and salmon hand rolls and the bluefin special sashimi thinking it would just be slices of bluefin by itself. Turns out the special sashimi came with the bluefin on a little cucumber “flower” and a little bit of fresh wasabi. I wasn’t a fan of the cucumber presentation or serving method as it took away from the bluefin, but the bluefin was average anyways. After seeing how the special sashimi came out, we asked the server if they had regular salmon sashimi (off the menu) and she was able to get us 4 slices on the side, no cucumbers. I forgot to mention rice here is not very good: quite flakey/hard and falls apart when you pick up the sushi. It was noticeable but not so much that it took away from the fish. Out of all the fish, I think the yellowtail toro was by far the best. I would definitely also ask the server for orders of sashimi off the menu; don’t opt for the special sashimi. In addition to fish, we also ordered the clam appetizer which was very tasty and fresh! The clams (probably 20 or so in one order) came in a salty buttery broth which was delicious. I wanted to drink the broth but it would have been a bad idea, all that butter. Overall I’m so glad I came by Kakurega and found a sushi place I’d return to in OC! 4 stars as the fish was very good, but still not comparable to Little Tokyo.

Sushi House Menu with Prices 2630 Wolflin Ave, Amarillo

This is beyond belief. I eat sushi at least twice a week. Sushi house completely lost credibility. I ordered the sashimi sampler w Tuna, salmon and yellowtail. I have eaten sushi for a LONG time. Never have I had a more RANCID piece of fish in my mouth. The tuna was bad, colorless and looked like it had been bought at a supermarket two days before. Blah. Nasty. The Salmon had good texture , color, and I had one slice of sashimi. The yellowtail was rancid. I almost vomited the minute it hit my mouth. Probably the single worst inedible moment of my entire life. It was soooooo bad. Bottom line, these guys have lost whatever good they had going. Hope I am not sick tomorrow! Do not eat raw fish here. Irony, they still charged me even though I immediately gave them back my order. Told them I will not accept rancid fish. They did not even apologize, but the sushi ass acted like I offended him. He kept staring at me like the “customer is wrong”. I guarantee he would not eat what he served me!! I would rather eat sushi at McDonalds or Red Lobster. Chunk

Oishi Sushi – Menu with Prices – 8101 NE Parkway Dr # E2, Vancouver

We didn’t feel like going to our favorite sushi restaurant in Portland, so last Saturday we decided to give this place a try despite of the 3,5 star reviews. We were pleasantly surprised of the food. The ahi poke was very good, great flavor but not over powering the tuna. The slices of the salmon sashimi were so thick, we’ve never had it like that before. The salmon and tuna rolls have quite big cuts of the fish too. We also tried the fried soft shell crab, it was so good. Overall we will definitely will come back. I don’t give this place 5 stars because they don’t have agedashi tofu or zaru soba noodles with dipping sauce which I think is a standard in Japanese restaurant to have in the menu.

All About Poke – Menu with Prices – 1916 Colorado Blvd, Los Angeles

(+) Salmon My girlfriend was recommended to All About Poke by a coworker so we decided to stop by. This was my first experience with poke, and I was content with my first visit. Food: We both weren’t really hungry, so we shared a medium bowl, which comes with three scoops of fish, and as many toppings as you’d like. We ordered the house sauce, which is a soy sauce based sauce that wasn’t overpowering, but hit the spot. It wasn’t a thick sauce either. We also elected for the white rice, which was cooked a little on the hard side. The fish is good quality, but not the best salmon I’ve had. The tuna was also good. With all of the flavors and different toppings in the bowl, it is hard to determine what’s what and all gets mixed around anyways. Service: The employee welcomed us and was kind. She explained things to us kindly since it was our first time there. Atmosphere: It is more of a take out place and there were no other parties when we walked in. The tables and counters were clean and the restaurant is brightly lit. Parking: There is a parking lot; however, there are only two parking spaces that I saw that were designed for All about Poke. Seems like a low number to me, but that just shows that most people must grab their poke bowls and enjoy it at home. Overall, I was satisfied and content with my first poke bowl visit. I’m not a huge poke fan, but I would recommend it for their variety of options and the quality of their fish.

Bluefin Poke Reno – Menu with Prices – 170 S Virginia St Ste 102, Reno

I really enjoy the poke here and the quality of the fish is pretty good. Standard choice of toppings with the addition of seaweed paper! (A great rare find, in my experience in poke places around town, since I can’t get enough of it!). The BEST sauce choices with my personal favorite – the dried garlic soy! The 4 star review is for a couple of things. While it is cute, and I would normally be all for having your kids work for you while on summer break, if this affects my normal routine at a paid service (i.e. my food order), I will no longer agree with your choice to employee your kids. The worker did a great job asking me about my preferences for toppings and if she’d placed enough mixed greens in the bowl. But, I felt that maybe I wasn’t getting full scoops of protein since she seemed to be struggling to reach the bottom of the bin of salmon to retrieve full scoops and she lost a piece to the counter while trying to get it into my bowl. At $11.95 for 4 scoops (~8 oz.), I wouldn’t want to sacrafice even a single piece! The other issue was that I only received a single jalapeno slice in my bowl/: Maybe I was supposed to specify the number of jalapeno slices or maybe she is presently, a little too young for the job! The male parental figure did eventually come out and help/oversee the rest of the transaction. The other comment is on the salmon. It seems to be soaked in a salt-based solution that gives it a totally different flavor than I am used to for poke salmon. The flavor is actually uniquely delicious but it does make me wonder if this is a technique used to preserve the fish longer? The color is a little drained, making the salmon cubes a paler pink/orange than normal raw salmon, and there are small black flecks (pepper, maybe?). But it definitely is worth a try as it is quite yummy! I will definitely be back!

Sushi Secrets Menu with Prices 2110 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley

Been passing this spot for forever and finally decided to give it a try. It’s basically another BYO poke place though they also offer a couple hot prepped appetizer options and some sushi burritos. I’ve only come for the poke and it’s fine overall but definitely not a preferred spot with the exception of the location. Pros: -Kelp Noodles: I know it’s not everyone’s fave but I like them and once they soak in the sauce a bit the texture is quite good. -Price: $10 for 3 scoops is pretty reasonable Neutrals: -Fish quality: About the same as any other place. On the lower end if anything but it’s fine. -Spicy Tuna: About as standard of a recipe as you can get but nothing wrong with it Cons: -Service isn’t always the friendliest. Not actively rude but they always seem very drained. -They only drizzle the sauce on top of the poke aka none of the flavors integrate into the fish at all. It all sits at the bottom. WHY?!?! Overall, Sushi Secrets is about as average of a poke place as any other spot but drizzling sauce thing is probably their biggest downfall because the actual poke itself tastes just like sashimi which would be fine but the fish quality isn’t good enough to be sashimi.

Poke District – Menu with Prices – 1924 N Tustin St, Orange

This is the best poke I’ve ever had. My little brother and I came here right when they just opened the door. As soon as they opened, customers started coming in one by one. It was a steady flow coming in. My brother and I stood near the cashier, contemplating what to get since it was out first time here. I decided on getting the salmon bowl, with white rice, everything, and with the Jay-Yo-Lee sauce, which was a creamy mayo sauce. My little brother got the half and half bowl (half tuna and half salmon), brown rice, everything on top, and the Hot Lava Sauce (Spicy). We received our poke still hot and fresh. The second I took a bite out of the salmon, my mouth was watering! It was an amazing amount of flavor. The sauce was mixed evenly and there was an abundant amount of fish! Sad to say, I couldn’t finish my amount of fish… I know, shame on me… The rice was enough, the seaweed salad was enough, and the imitation crab was just right. No other poke place will be able to compete now !

Zushi Japanese Bistro – Menu with Prices – 4540 Main St, Virginia Beach

Great sushi place within walking distance of my hotel. I always need to get some sort of sashimi when I go for sushi. Here I got the Chirashi which came with a choice of salad or miso soup. I went with the salad. I love love love ginger dressing so yeah, salad for me. Real basic, but good. Veggies were fresh and the dressing was what I was expecting. The chirashi is sashimi on a bed of sushi rice. This one had some pickled vegetables as well. The rice was great sushi rice, a little sweet and cooked well. The pickled veggies included ginger, cucumber and squash (maybe??? not sure), all good. The wasabi was a good quality. Strong and smooth. There were two pieces of Tamagoyaki (japanese omelet thing that’s a little sweet). I’m never a fan of this or really any egg really (so don’t take my opinion on this part into account). I did eat it so that should mean something. Now the fish. It tasted super fresh. The tuna had a beautiful coloring, the salmon was marbled well (can fish be marbled? Well it is now). In addition there was white tuna, shrimp and two other fish but I can’t recall what type. Regardless all were great with tuna being the king of the dish.

Kabooki Sushi- Sand Lake – Menu with Prices – 7705 Turkey Lake Rd, Orlando

If you are looking for a “food experience” which might include sashimi or nigiri (highest quality raw fish) or some fantastically unique Asian tapas-sized dishes, then Kabooki Sushi is your place. I have had the pleasure of eating at both locations a few times and every time has been an experience. The maguro truffle (tuna base) is the number one ordered dish at both places and is out of this world delicious. The one up (mushrooms) is another dish that will have you looking across the table at your partner saying wow. They hand you the regular menu and a specials of the day menu. If the specials menu has the Octopus dish, GET IT. They chop the octopus up in pieces and add a few things in a bowl, and it is heaven on earth. There are other items on both menus we have had, and all have been good = I was only commenting on some of the ones we thought were the best. Raw Fish = wow these guys no how to do it. Open up your pocketbook at this point because this high-quality Sashimi and Nigiri is not cheap. They have one piece that goes for $ 25 just on its own, and the higher end stuff is $ 8 to $ 10 per piece. Plan on spending about $ 60 – 120 for two people for just the raw fish portion of your bill = but if you are willing to pay that you will have an authentic culinary experience when coupled with a few of the other dishes I recommend above. My recommendation for the raw fish is to order the three levels of tuna (bluefin sashimi experience) with the regular, medium grade and highest end (Otoro is the high end). Get two pieces of each and together start at the lowest one and eat your way up to the highest end piece. The lionfish is another fantastic raw fish and try to mix in two varieties of salmon if you like salmon. We have not done the chefs selection yet but plan on splurging on that next weekend. It can cost $ 150 – $ 200 per person, but my friend has done it and said it is one of the best selections he has ever done and he has lived in Los Angeles and visited NY. The chef’s selection is a 12-course experience, but the course are smaller, of course,â?? and doable if you are hungry. I guess I should wait until I go and experience it before commenting more but regardless we will only do that on a rare occasion = I plan on making Kabooki a once a month requirement for my budget and dinning choice.

Shokunin Sushi and Japanese Cuisine – Menu with Prices – 440 N 8th St, Lincoln

I was very excited to try Shokunin Sushi. From the reviews, it looks like it’s only been open a couple months, but reviewers raved about it. We went on a Wednesday and arrived around 5:00 (they opened at 4:00). We were the first customers. I was a little disappointed they didn’t have plum wine. I was more disappointed they didn’t bluefin tuna belly. I had prepared. I knew exactly what I wanted and when they told me they couldn’t prepare bluefin tuna belly sashimi, I told them I had to reevaluate my life. The waiter said they could provide bluefin tuna belly nigiri, but I didn’t want rice getting in the way. I appreciated the honesty and unwillingness to serve less than perfect bluefin tuna belly sashimi. We ordered edamame and I planned on and did order the Ika-sukada-yaki, or grilled squid. I made a fool of myself when the waiter let us know the ika-sukada-yaki would be out in a few minutes and I asked, “and the squid?” Well… live and learn Japanese. Oh… since they didn’t have the bluefin, I opted for the salmon. Each of the chef’s selection sashimi is supposed to be five pieces, but the chef provided three pieces of salmon and three pieces of salmon belly. The waiter said the chef provided salmon belly since the bluefin wasn’t available. Oh my! More on this later… Okay, I guess later is now. The salmon belly.. I’d never had it. I guess I’ve never had any fish belly. I didn’t know what to expect. I was shocked. The salmon belly was flavorful. I didn’t put anything on it and it seemed a bit bland at first. As I swallowed, I noticed an amazing, almost smokey flavor filling my palate. It was if I was struck by a flavor wave that just kept giving. Many thanks to the chef for providing an experience that was a first for me. Oh… and the ika-sukada-yaki, aka grilled squid, was just a delicious as I expected. It had a lovely, grilled flavor reminiscent of steak. The delicate sauce with sesame seeds was a perfect compliment to the squid. My friend has the Donkotsu Ramen. She really enjoyed it. I’d come back again and again if I lived anywhere near Nebraska.

Hibachi-San Menu with Prices 2101 Bonisteel Blvd, Ann Arbor

Being in the same food-court area as Panda Express and Ahmo’s Gyros, Hibachi San shouldn’t really surprise you with its convenience. With that said, you also shouldn’t expect to be impressed. Like I prefaced, Hibachi San is a new addition to the basement of Pierpont Commons on north campus. It offers quick and convenient Japanese-style food, at prices that are pretty on par with Ahmo’s and Panda. For about $9, you can get a bowl with 2 proteins, and for $10, you can choose from 3 proteins. The price is respectable, considering that you can choose from raw fish like salmon, tuna, scallops, and shrimp, or cooked options like chicken and salmon. Their spicy salmon/tuna is actually pretty spicy, but the original choices don’t really have any flavor, though they seem to be covered in some kind of sauce. You can have your bowl served on white rice, brown rice, salad, or half and half, which is awesome! When it comes to the fish, you’re not getting Japanese restaurant quality, but there isn’t an overwhelming fishy flavor. I can’t compare to other poke restaurants, but I can say that it’s about what you’d expect from a place that serves raw fish Chipotle style. The portion sizes are pretty good, and you also get the option of adding free toppings like edamame, ginger, seaweed salad, and sometimes avocado. They also have grab-n-go options like California rolls that add some extra convenience, but probably wouldn’t be enough for a meal. Service is usually friendly and quick, and the experience is pretty much the same as it is at Panda. It’s nice to have some variety in Pierpont Commons. For the same price, though, you could get a more filling meal at Fireside Cafe upstairs. However, poke bowls seem to be all the rage these days, and Hibachi San could probably satisfy a craving. If you’re looking for quality sashimi, though, there are plenty of other restaurants that will serve fresher and better quality fish.
