I saw one of my Facebook friends post a delectable picture from Taco Express so I decided to give them another shot because it was so close to home. I tried them a few years ago and didn’t like the tacos but figured they might have improved in the years. Unfortunately, they were the same as I remembered. The corn in a cup and tacos did not live up to my expectations. I don’t think I can find another taco place as good as my favorite hole in the wall taco joint at the Friendly’s gas station off of Harry Hines and Northwest Highway.

Tacos Jerez – Menu with Prices – 17681 Beach Blvd, Huntington Beach

$1.16 TACOS – need I say more?? It was Taco Tuesday, and not gonna lie, we had heard hole mole had good taco deals down the street, but it was soo crowded! My husband and I appreciate chains, but are more of hole-in-the-wall foodies most of the time. Tacos Jerez knocks Mexican street tacos out of the park – loads of meat, cilantro and onions for days. Their sopas ($3.00) was really good too. I want to go back and try their specials because if they are as good as their tacos are, then we will certainly become regulars. The wait was a little long, probably because we ordered a butt load of tacos, but other than that we know where to go now for Taco Tuesday!

Cantu’s Tacos – Menu with Prices – 320 Corpus Christi St, Laredo

Omg this place is amazing. A little hole in the wall taco joint bursting with flavor and AMAZING service. My friends got al pastor on corn and asada on flour and I got a desebrada on corn, chicharron on corn, and tripe on corn. All of them were fantastic-loaded with meat, onions, tomatoes, and avocado served with a wonder verde hot sauce and delicious beans. The chicharron was super fresh and very flavorful, the tripe was amazing and tender but not oily, the desebrada was perfect. And the corn tortillas were crispy and wonderful. Highly highly recommend!!!!!

Riverside Taco Company Menu with Prices 105 N Union St, Alexandria

I live in Chicago where thereâ??s a big Mexican community and lots of taco joints that are amazing. I was disappointed in the amount salt and grease these tacos had. My tortilla felt apart while trying to eat. I had one el pastor which is pork but should never be swimming in a pool of grease. I had high expectations because of all the good reviews on google. Really sad to see how some people will walk away from this taco truck thinking these are legit tacos…

Taco Bamba Taqueria – Menu with Prices – 10629 Braddock Rd, Fairfax

Finally a decent taco place that wont have me going back to taco bell for my fix of tacos! Walking in, first thing to note is the blaring metal music. Not really a conversation friendly environment, but maybe that was the vibe they were going for? Tacos. I’m here to talk about the tacos. Had the taco bamba and chicharron and both of them had soft texture tortillas with healthy servings of meat inside each taco. The tacos were not salty at all, and they provide sauces on the side to spice up the experience depending on how daring you are! (You can ask for their hottest sauce) Bonus points for me were that no juices leaked out of the taco while I was eating it, which I dont know if it was intentional or not. Overall the tacos were good, but nothing amazing. Definitely could be a common taco stop for me due to convenience. ON A SIDE NOTE: My friend ordered their churros, and as soon as she took the first bite her face warped… Apparently she said it was WAY too sweet, so be careful if you are not fond of sweets!

Ensenada’s Surf N Turf Grill – Menu with Prices – 2931 Nutwood Ave, Fullerton

We recently moved from Bellflower, and we used to always go to Taco Nazo, which is well known for their fish tacos. Now that live in Anaheim, we were looking for a fish taco place that would be comparable to our old spot. Baja California definitely is on par with them! We ordered a grilled fish taco combo, shrimp ceviche tostada, and three more fish tacos on the side. It came out to a little over $20 for everything. Let me tell you, their shrimp ceviche was AMAZING. I work next to a market that has a specialty ceviche bar, but Baja California’s ceviche was way better, and cheaper too. It comes with two tostadas and a good amount of ceviche, topped with avocado. I’d come back just for that! They have their ceviche making station right next to the cashier so you can see them make it. It seemed like every single person ordered ceviche, lol. The grilled fish tacos were delicious as well. The fish was a good size, not too small. I always end up taking off one tortilla since it comes with two just because I feel it’s too much, but that’s just personal preference. The rice and beans were alright, nothing too special. I really like how they have a station where you can get your own lime and chiles. The only downside is we’re used to them being served freshly grilled and warm, and these were cold, but they still tasted good. Perfect accompaniment to the tacos. Their food is reasonably priced ($8-$9 for a 2 taco combo). They had a lot of seating and the tv was showing the football game, which was a plus. We will definitely be back, gotta try the fried fish tacos next time!

Bandido Taqueria Mexicana – Menu with Prices – 905 E Liberty St, Louisville

I keep forgetting to take pictures so close your eyes while you read this and use your imagination. I got the fish taco (fried), Maui Wowie (el pastor), and the carnitas tacos, plus an original elote. The tacos were good street tacos on small corn tortillas, they only have corn taco tortillas. Each taco had a slaw mixture that complimented the protein. The fish was a nice battered fillet that fit well in the tortilla. The el pastor taco could have used more meat and pineapple, the pork seemed a little under seasoned. I did really like the condiment bar. The serrano and habanero salsas had great flavor. You can actually taste the name sake pepper in each without them burning out your pallet. The pickled onions were superb, thin slices of habanero provided a nice secondary flavor with a kick. The best for last is the elote. Excellent ear of corn with large juicy kernels, coated in Mexican table cream, chili powder, cheese, and with a twist a red “enchilada” sauce. All on an easy to consume stick, it was my favorite. I love knowing I can grab some quick street tacos during my lunch break.

Panza’s Barbeque – Menu with Prices – 2027 E State Hwy 356, Irving

When I’m on a road trip, I like to find quaint, “Hole-in-the-Wall” places to eat. On my recent trip to the Dallas area, I found two, but I’ll mention my favorite, Panza’s, in Irving. This place is a small, Hole-in-the Wall joint in a strip mall, It has a small dining area and you can get take-out. It is ran by Mexican’s and has authentic Menudo and Pozole, both are outstanding and very reasonably priced. The only downside is they do not have beer. In any case it’s dang good stuff Maynard and we’ll be back.

Iacovone Kitchen – Menu with Prices – 5033 Freret St, New Orleans

My expectations were not that high when we strolled into this hole-in-the wall place on Freret Street. When I say hole-in-wall we are talking about a place that seats only six people and four of those seats at at a bar that runs along the wall. We were the only ones in the joint which does not necessarily bode well. After we ordered the proprietor, chef and sole worker said it would be about ten minutes and our food would be ready. So as we are apt to do, my wife and I broke out our phones and made conversation based on what we were reading on our screens. Meanwhile the guy preparing our food walks out the door. Now I’m thinking to myself, a tad bit put out, that this is going to take much longer than ten minutes. But the guy stopped there at the front window where he has an herb window garden and starts trimming fresh basil for my meal! Ok, now I’m impressed and and my expectations are rising but I know to temper my enthusiasm lest I become disappointed. Now I’m sneaking peaks at him while engaging with my wife to see if there are any other surprises. The next surprise came at about ten minutes from when we ordered – two beautifully presented meals. But we all know that the true test is how it tastes. Smashing! I had the sweet corn and crab soup with lump crab meat. It was by far the best soup I’ve ever had. My wife had sweet corn tortelli with shrimp that was also superb. I tried to order that also but my wife got the last one. Fortunately for both us she got the last one because we were both able to enjoy tasting each other’s meal. We learned from talking to the proprietor/chef/and sole worker that his business is primarily carry out business. And once he runs of of a dish it is no longer available that day. He also frequently changes the menu so I may not be able to have the same soup the next time I go there. Seating is limited and the overhead is low so you may want to keep that in mind because I imagine that it can get a bit backed up when several patrons arrive simultaneously. Our test of a good restaurant is would we go back and order the same things. The answer is unequivocally YES! 5 STARS

Taco Grill #2 – Menu with Prices – # D, 2590 Newport Blvd # D, Costa Mesa

I had such a great experience here! Came on a taco Tuesday around 8:15pm, and it wasn’t super crowded at all. I found seating easily in their small space. They offer 4 different tacos on Taco Tuesday for $1.50 – super worth. I got one of each. Unfortunately I can’t remember which ones they were but it’s listed on the front of their door. The tortilla is slightly bigger than your average taco, and each taco comes with two tortillas. The tacos are filled w more meat than usual I’d say. There’s a self serve station that has 3 different types of salsa. I would say each of them is around medium spice level, which I love! There’s also self serve cucumbers, chopped purple onion + jalapeño, pepper, and lemons. Four tacos made me way too full, I’d definitely stick to three next time considering how filling each one is. My favorite taco by far was their blackened fish taco which was flavorful and tender! Idk if to go orders receive this as well, but I got complimentary chips when I dined in. The staff was also super nice. Overall, not a life changing place, but super worth it for the price (I paid $6 + tax)! I’d definitely check it out!

El Güero Birria de Chivo – Menu with Prices – 3611 S 16th St, Phoenix

Hands down I have not encountered a spot with good Birria de Chivo until I ate here. It’s a hole in the wall place, not fancy, but clean. As soon as you walk in you can smell the Birria. That’s the only thing in there menu and I think menudo, but this is strictly a Birreria. If your looking for a place with a variety of foods this ain’t for you. If your looking for great authentic Mexican Birria de chivo you are in the right place. The place is packed and they are only open until 2pm. Everything is fresh made from the handmade tortillas to the salsa, consomé and aguas frescas. The staff is friendly. This is real Mexican cooking no doubt. You can get your Birria steamed or Tatemada (they fry it up a bit right out of the steamer) I recommend the Tatemada. It has great flavor! I didn’t care too much for the live entertainment, but hey I could live with it for a bit. Definitely a go to hole in the wall joint worth trying. They won’t disappoint!!!

Taco El Paisa – Menu with Prices – 1649 Elvan Ave, Columbus

On the outside, Tacos El Paisa has the rugged, authentic and hole in the wall type look. After all, it is a truck/shack tucked on a busy road. Small place suited with outdoor seating, if the weather chooses not to participates with your meal no worries there is an overhead shed type roof to keep your head and food dry! Mainly people whom venture towards stops like these either have experienced the cuisine before or are willing and eager to try new places. As far as best Mexican food in town its up for debate but its a contender for sure. The usual options on the menu as you would find on any other choices. Ordered Tacos and a Torta. For the tacos, I got carne asada and Al pastor for the meat and got the carne asada for the torta with a Horchata for my beverage. Street tacos are generally known for their doubled corn tortillas with meat, diced white onions, chopped cilantro, and your choice of salsa over the tacos. At this place, they provide a serve yourself type of topping station. These tortillas seemed heated by way of fryer and sort of left the tortillas a little tough on the bite, not a big deal. Carne Asada is the staple of street taco cuisine and the most common choice, to me it did the job of satisfying the craving but was definitely mass produced and didn’t have that certain type of effort i usually get from street tacos. The Al pastor on the other hand was great, The torta was good as well considering coming off of sub par, good for the town type of tacos. Places seem to forget that the street taco/ street spanish cuisine is somewhat comparable towards the “philly cheesesteak” on how its a working person’s type of food and its usually cooked by a person from the same type of energy. In Summary, It is good for what its worth, prices are fair and the food does the job but wouldn’t impress the experienced and in the know.

La Chiquita – Menu with Prices – 1915 Drew St, Clearwater

I’ve always seen this place when driving down Drew St. with a lit up Bakery sign, and I was in the mood for some Mexican sweet breads.. So, I finally decided to turn in to see what they had to offer. This place is a very small hole in the wall. Seats about 10 people. When I walked in the seats were filled with people so I was glad to see that. There was a little glass case with a decent selection of sweets, I grabbed 5 Sweet breads and to my surprise they also had food. I know it says taqueria on this listing, but if u actually watch out for the sign on the street it only says panaderia y pasteleria from the outside. Anyways, I ordered 4 steak tacos to try. I’ve been on a taco mission to find best taco so why not put this place on my list? When I got the tacos they looked great. Double layered corn tortillas, lightly seasoned steak with cilantro onion and lime. They even came with a little radish and sweet grilled whole onion garnish which I loved. The tacos were good, the steak could use a bit more seasoning, but the homemade hot sauce gave them an extra oomph. The Verde green one he offers is the best. Tasted authentic, and I will definitely come back to this place when a taco craving kicks in to get my taco fix. 5 sweet breads and 4 tacos came out to $13. Also, the older man running the place was very nice and made me feel comfortable even though he didn’t really speak English, he tried to be as helpful as he could and explain things. The other place I went to the other day where the younger girl there did speak perfect English wasn’t very personable, La Cabana Del Tio. Their tacos were delicious, but the ladies in there are pretty stank face. This was my first time here and have not tried any other items. So, I’m basing this rating strictly on steak tacos and service.
