Great coffee! Really 4.5 stars as it is not the very best I’ve ever had, but it is quite good. Sometimes there is a bias toward liking local products simply because they are local. While I do try to give the local guys a shot, I am not particularly sentimental where my wallet is concerned, so for me to come back, a business must deliver local or not. Sweetwater Organic Coffee does indeed. I’ve been buying Sweetwater’s Ethiopian/Nicaraguan blend lately, and I think it is fantastic. I’ve also enjoyed drinking their morning blend within the last month. Their full city roast has all the kick of fuller roasts, something I think a lot of smaller roasters sacrifice in favor trying to maintain the subtleties of their coffees. However, Sweetwater does an excellent job of maintaining a pleasant roundness and complexity while having just enough char to keep things interesting. It’s nice to buy local not just because it’s local but because it also happens to be pretty damned fantastic.

Milone Brothers Coffee Co – Menu with Prices – 1413 Lone Palm Ave, Modesto

The best coffee in Modesto. One of only two coffee roasters in Modesto City proper, Milone has been roasting superior coffee for almost 30 years (since the late 80’s). It all began as Plantation Coffee Company, a roastery & full service cafe. They closed the cafe part of the business long ago, & today operate as wholesale distributors. Where can you sample some Milone coffee? Several local businesses carry them…Sabatino’s, Michael’s Pizza, Papapavlo’s, Velvet Creamery, & Picasso’s, just to name a few. I was particularly impressed to learn that the coffee I had at Sabatino’s, which I loved, was just one end of a surprisingly broad & prolific spectrum. From Brazilian roast to Fogburner, there’s a roast for every palate. And after sampling just 2 of their roasts, it was easy to surmise that any coffee lover will find a Milone roast that he or she loves. Not a business owner? No problem. You can come in & purchase beans by the pound. But remember that this isn’t a full service cafe. I had the pleasure of meeting Scott during my most recent visit. Scott knows everything about coffee. He’s basically a walking & talking coffee encyclopedia. He is also beyond personable. A gem. This is the best coffee in Modesto. 5 stars.

Carnelian Coffee – Menu with Prices – 6923 SE Foster Rd, Portland

This is the place in South East to get a great coffee. Luke and Katie are great to talk to and the coffee that they roast is amazing. The bean is also super reasonably priced (and better tasting) compared to many other local roasters offering such great single origin coffees. Now on a side note, If you love beautiful rocks, there are some great ones here and they would love to talk to you about them and discuss finding more. They also have opened up space in the building for more seating and getting work done. Do yourself a favor and stop in.

Legacy Chocolates – Menu with Prices – 141 4th St E, St Paul

I was on a recent work trip in St. Paul and discovered this little gem while sniffing out a decent cup of coffee. A local recommended this place and a great recommendation it was. I stopped every day during my week in the city. First, the coffee. Each cup made fresh upon order – in pour over style. It’s takes just a hair longer but really worth the wait. I tried the Legacy Blend (medium roast) and loved it so much I ordered some online once I got home. Second, the chocolates. Unbelievably good. The truffles were amazing and the brownie selection to die. My favorites included the caramel truffle and the walnut brownie. There were other baked goods that I didn’t have a chance to try. Lastly, Customer Service was impeccable and prices very reasonable. Especially for the quality. Do yourself a favor – visit.

Barbie’s Daylight Donuts – Menu with Prices – 11814 Indiana Ave, Lubbock

I got the cherry pecan fritter. Wasn’t bad though I personally favor apple fritter after trying the cherry pecan fritter. I couldn’t tell you about the donuts. The coffee brand there is from a local roaster called Sunrise Coffee, I think. The blends they have included “Cowboy”,(a dark roast), “Governor’s Cup” (medium roast), and “Breakfast Blend” (another medium roast, I think). They didn’t have “Sumatra”. My experience, service-wise, was perfunctorily cordial, at best. I wasn’t very impressed but it wasn’t a terrible place either. I think if the men that worked there smiled a little more and may lightened up a tad, the overall experience would be a little more enjoyable. If you like hard-rock music, then you’d enjoy the station that was being played there. My guess is they get more drive-thru business than walk-ins. It is in an area that is still developing so I guess there’s not much customer traffic, but it has been open a couple of years so I can’t provide too much excuse. ð???

The Urban Cup – Menu with Prices – 2225 E Grand River Ave, Lansing

I read an article about this coffee shop in one of the local papers…maybe City Pulse? I was suprised by the claim made regarding dark roast coffee. They say they dont offer dark roast out of respect for the bean and the roaster. They find that a large percentage of people are looking for the full, robust flavor of a dark roast, but not the bitter aspect. As an avid dark roast drinker, I wanted to try this place out to expand my coffee experience and test this theory. I walked in with an open mind and walked out with the most bitter cup of coffee I possibly have ever tasted. I’m not sure what happened. The urban cup left a very bitter taste in my mouth, I only took a few sips and threw it in the trash. Not impressed, not swayed by their claim. If you are going to make such bold statements, back them up please.

Equator Coffee Co – Menu with Prices – 134 Grimes St # 3, Eugene

Have been buying Equator coffee since I discovered it at a coffee shop in Portland 8 years ago. Now that I live even further away, I always order their coffee on-line. Guatemala is our main favorite but their Espresso blend is great too, even though I typically favor a medium roast. And their decaf has great flavor for moments when the caffeine buzz gets too much. Always use an Aero Press and you should ask Greg about those… but my Italian coffee maker does well too. A great place and great people! Get yer beans here!

Camellia Coffee Roasters – Menu with Prices – 1104 R St Ste 150, Sacramento

So one day my colleague and I were chewing it up with how rare it is to find a good coffee roaster café. He recommend I check out Camellia. I noted that. This past Saturday I reconnected with an old friend from high school and we were walking along R Street. When we came to the corner I saw the sign for Camellia Coffee Roasters and asked if she would like to check it out. So we go in and one of the guys there was super friendly. Turns out he was one of the owners, not just the barista. He gave my friend and I a bit of info with how his business partner roasts the beans. He even gave us a little taste of the coffee they were serving that day. I told him I like or prefer darker roast with a strong taste and he recommend I try the Brazil beans. I ordered an espresso, met his business partner when he rang both my friend and I up. Got a sample of another coffee beans they had at the time. I told them this was a spontaneous visit once I saw the sign and remember my co-worker telling me to try Camellia out. The guys were very grateful. I am always up to supporting local places, especially local roasters and I will be back. ?

Fiore’s Sweet Cup – Menu with Prices – 2835 SW 91st St #330, Gainesville

This local place has a ton of goodies and is good for a solid cup of coffee. Located in a place where another yogurt shop closed, this place has kept it on their menu but also added coffee. Pros- Great local small business. They have a ton of selections when it comes to coffee- made all different ways of too- lattes, cappuccinos, etc. They use local Sweetwater Organics coffee, which has a nice bold flavor depending on the roast. They also offer ice cream and frozen yogurt as well as local bakery treats from Baker Baker (also known as Amanda’s Traditional Bakeshop). I’ve also seen some selection of organic teas and drinks. It’s also a staple for the surrounding Haile/ Tower Rd. area- there’s not much in the way of local coffee shops. They also have a reward system where you can get a free coffee after 10 visits and routinely have specials on their Facebook page. It’s also very kid friendly- I always see kids in the afternoon after school doing their homework. They do have some tables inside and outside. The staff is very nice and accommodating. Cons- If you are used to sugary, frappucino style concoctions this place is not for you. They do have some flavoring syrups but not as extensive as Starbucks, which is ok in my book. Other than that-and probably the location for some people- there aren’t many cons. Overall, this little spot makes a more than decent cup of coffee at a great price. If you miss Baker Baker pastries and want a good cup of coffee, I recommend Fiore’s.

Georgia Street Grind – Menu with Prices – 1001, 25 W Georgia St #101, Indianapolis

This is one of my favorite coffee shops in Indy. The baristas are always friendly, and they are expert drink makers. I normally get either a latte or an americano. They have both been delicious every time I have stopped in. They sell while been coffee there, as well. They have their own blend, which is really good. My last americano from there was made with their signature blend, and it had great flavor at the top middle and end of each drink. They also had a couple coffees from other roasters (including Blue Mind, which is a great local roaster). They sell sodas by the bottle, too. My family likes Sprecher root beer and cream soda, so I will sometimes grab that, too. One thing to know before you go: There isn’t any seating in the coffee shop, so everything is “to go.” Having said that, they are located right on Georgia Street about a half block from Pan Am plaza, so there plenty of places to hang out and sit outside on a nice day. I recommend Georgia Street Grind without hesitation.

Full City Coffee Roasters – Menu with Prices – 3850 Janisse St # A, Eugene

Full City is truly great coffee. Thank you Michael Phinney for faithfully rising early every morning to roast some of Eugene’s finest coffee for us!

Hidden Peaks Coffee And Roasting Company – Menu with Prices – 4879 S Redwood Rd, Salt Lake City

I’ve been trying to checkout the local roasting spots in Utah (there are quite a few) and Hidden Peaks has been popping up as a suggestion. Am I glad I came here? Most definitely yes. The shop is locally owned and has been in the neighborhood for quite a while. Not the typical part of town where you’d find a coffee shop, let alone a roaster. Are the people of Taylorsville lucky to have this place? Yes. Small batch roasted daily during the week and they have online ordering. A solid selection of beans from the standard countries. Mexico, Brazil, etc. Also blends of different roasts for people with different tastes. Flavored drinks and the standard options of lattes and americano are on the menu. *As a warning to those who are riding the third wave coffee trend, this is probably not your type of place. They roast darker and blend darker as well.* The location has lots of space and lots of seating. Tables, couches and even a place to play chess by the front door. The decor inside is different but every coffee shop has its own feel so I guess it works. There is plenty of parking in the lot so no need to worry. It’s a place to come grab a drink and hangout. There were a couple of big groups and a few other people scattered about the shop. The seating is plentiful and can accommodate most sizes of groups. The staff were wonderful! Friendly, chatty, and they were communicating with each other. Not always something people catch on to but the communication between staff also tells a lot about the place. THE BEANS: I got the Park City Blend over drip. It was exactly what a feel good cup of coffee should be. A blend of a dark and mediums from South and Central America. I bought whole bean Peru and Snakecreek Blend to take home. So far, so good. The darker Snakecreek ended up great both hot (fresh) and cold. A strong bodied roast that goes well with cream and sugar. Not my typical go to, but a good dark blend is a comfort thing for me. Long story short, I will come back and sample more.

Rig City Roasting Company Menu with Prices 1820 G St, Bakersfield

Finally! A true 3rd wave coffee standard in Bakersfield! Located in the downtown area, this small cafe front packs a great punch of various types of coffee beans from around the world. Stepping into the cafe, is an intimate place with some chairs and tables plus 2 places where a smaller group of 4 can sit in a living room type atmosphere with arm chairs, love seat and coffee table. It’s clean, modern, and speaks of Bakersfield’s culture. with After years of drinking second wave coffee (ie. Starbucks, etc.), there have been a couple of 3rd wave coffee roasters and cafe that have come to the scene, which I am excited about. While I travel the world, I intentionally go out of my way to hit the best coffee spots in different cities, including the most awarded coffee roaster in the US. I chemex with my own scale, burr grinder, and pour with my bona vita kettle set at 205 degrees. With saying that, Rig City does not disappoint. In fact, in my opinion, they are hands down the best roasters and serve the best coffee in town. (Please do not destroy your coffee with cream and sugar) I am totally impressed with the staff. All very friendly, and they know what they are doing. They know how to set the right ground levels along with the pull the coffee with their light, medium roast coffees. I recommend their Ethiopian or their Honduran Chichen. Here are my recommendations for the pour over that I really enjoy: – Ethiopian: grind level 12, pull at 4.5 – Honduran: grind level 12, pull at 4 (They will also grind the coffee and pull of you have your own preference) Other drinks that I have tried: – Cold Brew – excellent – Pineapple Matcha – good – Latte – excellent – Espresso – amazing They have various hot and cold teas also. I have not tried their pastries but they have a nice assortment and they always look fresh. This is my new go to spot for coffee and meetings. Here is my overall scorecard for this place: Atmosphere: 4.5 stars Service: 5 stars Coffee: 4.5 stars Overall: I give this a solid 4.5 but I will proudly score it a 5! The only suggestion I would have for this place is futile but I’ll post it anyways: 1. The place smells more like food than a coffee roaster due to the door to the business next door being opened. Again, this is just something I noticed. 2. They use the v-60… I personally wish they used a chemex, which I feel pulls better, but, again most people probably don’t even know the difference. Thanks Rig City!!!! You all rock!!!!
