Mom & Pop shops are my favorite, and this place is just that. They make everything by hand, by themselves, and that truth is there when you take your first bite. The french glaze is my go-to. I usually order a small coffee with cream, or blueberry muffin and a small mint tea. I do eat their other doughnuts, but I pretty much have the same order everyday. They will remember your order, by the way. I asked once, why they start work so early. For example: last night/this morning… I was driving home around 1:30am and the ‘Pop’ was already kneading dough. The ‘Mom’ informed me that some of the dough can take up to four hours to rise, and they need doughnuts ready for the 5am truckers & early workers. Because they have such a variety, they have to use different flour for this, different cooking temperatures for that, and fresh fruit with these. From what I know these people are well into their 50’s. They get up and start work before the moon descends and I’ve purchased doughnuts from them at 3pm in the afternoon. I’ve seen them close shop at 4 or 5pm and start work again by midnight/1am. They do this 7 days a week, by the way. Buying from them allows me to spend in my city, promote a small business, while simultaneously supporting the family that runs its operation. I feel good about that.

Mr Good’s Donuts – Menu with Prices – 801 S Glendale Ave # 2, Glendale

The Great Glendale Donut Derby continues with Mr. Goods entering the fray. This unit is owned and donuted by a beautiful Chinese couple who know and appreciate that Donuts are an American phenomena. A phenomena that they obviously support with their experience and labors. i bought a dozen of mixed glazed and cake and they went quickly to the secret donut tasting society to which i belong. After tallying all the scores: we seem to unbelievably have a 3 way tie! So it’s Mr Good, Fresh Donuts and Yum Yum in a dead heat. Bear in mind that all 3 are down home, non-fussy doughnut emporiums: no added bacon or strawberry glaze. nothing fancy. These businesses make doughnuts for the masses: doughnuts that you would grab and take to work to make it seem that you are cool and willing to shell out some bucks for your fellow slaves to the Man. In a dream i thought: how did donuts happen? why am i even doing this donut derby? what would my parents say if they knew? Does God like Donuts? So as with most things that are bad for you: Doughnuts seem to have been invented by the Dutch. From Wiki: The Dutch Doughnut. Records show that the Dutch were making olykoeks, or “oil cakes,” as early as the mid 19th century. These early doughnuts were simply balls of cake fried in pork fat until golden brown. If i had to guess i would have thought that doughnuts were from Italy as in dough fried in oil as in Flippers which is Pizza dough fried in oil and dusted with cinnamon sugar. Ok. So we have a 3 way tie in our doughnut derby. Remember that this derby is limited to d shops currently producing in Glendale. More later. My friends are loving this derby btw in that they have become the beneficiaries of most of the dozen donuts. i do try a bit (seriously!) of each variety . there is no way i am eating a dozen doughnuts myself. My 600 lb Life much?? Besides i don’t think that Tom Ford makes size 6X.

Gusto Pinsa Romana – Menu with Prices – 1000 Bush St, San Francisco

tldr: tasty, healthy version of pizza. still good, but not as good as classic pizza Welcome to Gusto Pinsa Romana, a Roman pinseria at the bottom of Nob Hill that offers a healthier version of pizza made from a mix of wheat, rice, and soy flour. Let’s start off by talking about the dough. Gusto claims that their dough has: 48% less sugar 85% less fat 100% less cholestrol 33% less calories than traditional pizza dough and you can definitely notice the difference immediately. The dough itself has similar rise to typical roman pizza, however you can immediately notice the texture difference. The inside of the dough is crisper, most likely due to the rice flour. However the dough itself is not as chewy as traditional pizza dough. It almost reminds me of sourdough in some cases as there are big air pockets inside. The mixture of flour creates a lighter, healthier dough than typical pizza dough. However, you do miss some of chewiness and crunch on the base of the pizza from a more traditional crust. Margherita (14): Can’t go wrong with a classic! Gusto’s margherita is very light, with a thin tomato sauce on the more acidic side, topped with fresh and aromatic basil. I wish the sauce was slightly sweeter, and had a thicker layer, for parts of the pizza I found it to be on the blander side. Amatriciana (18): Typically, amatriciana is one of my flavor pastas. The smokiness of the guanciale is excellent. The version at Gusto is definitely on the spicier side, it packs both heat and numbness. Cesar Salad (12): Excellent salad that was both liberal in quantity and also not too heavily dressed. A great way to start the meal! All in all, Gusto provides what it promises, a healthier version of pizza that is still very tasty. If I wanted to save some calories, but still was dying for pizza, this would be at the very top of my list. However, I think I would rather put on another pound or two, and order the original thing.

Fire & Brimstone – Menu with Prices – Barnone, 3000 E Ray Rd Building 6, Suite 101, Gilbert

A lot of potential, but misses the mark on the most important place. Fire & Brimstone has a lot going for it; the atmosphere is top notch, the toppings are interesting and unique as well as tasty, and their sauce is simplistic but good, especially for this style of pizza. Infact they get almost everything right, almost. Unfortunately a pizza is nothing without the base and this is where Fire & Brimstone comes up short. Their crust is unfortunately bland and clumsily prepared. The only flavor to speak of comes from the maillard reaction taking place on the dough’s surface. Sadly even this is held back by a simple mistake, too much flour. The pizzas are worked into shape on an over-floured work surface and since the dough is not tossed, nor is the excess flour knocked off before transferring to a peel for preparation you end up with a not insubstantial layer of dry flour on all of the crust including below the sauce and all sides. This inhibits the doughs ability to take on flavor from the cooking process and from the sauce above it. The flour also gives the entire pizza an unfortunate “dry” mouth feel. Fixing this would help a lot but it isn’t the doughs only flaw. Unfortunately the crust itself is still lacking flavor on the inside. My best guess at why this is, is a low proof time on the dough and insufficient gluten development. The fermentation process is crucial to building that almost tang you get from a good crust, a tang I could not find anywhere here. The gluten development is what gets you a nice chew in addition to rounding out the flavor. I’m no chef, or an expert, just a pizza nerd; but I want Fire and Brimstone to be a place I can recommend to people, it’s just not there yet for me. Still pretty great and has a lot to offer but it’s not quite the pizza I’m looking for at this price point.

Pepperbox Doughnuts – Menu with Prices – 101 W Worthington Ave Suite 150, Charlotte

What a great addition to the South End! These doughnuts are unique in their own way with the delicious and light yeast dough that is a touch chewy by design. They offer a wide range of flavors such as Blueberry Malt, Mexican Chocolate, Peanut Butter Oreo, cream-filledâ?? ones, and they even have vegan options too! Their menu is rotating regularly offering up new options every few weeks. My only dislike is some of the flavors I have tried such as the Blueberry Malt and Miso Caramel seemed to be very underwhelming and were very subtleâ??. These flavors really allow you to enjoy how good the dough truly is. The Mexican Chocolate, on the other hand,â?? was very strong and had an overwhelming amount of what tasted like cinnamonâ?? or pepper. This was the only doughnut I would not be willing to get again. I do look forward to what future flavors are in store. I have been here twice so far in the early morning and have had no issues with supply or having to wait. The service was excellent both times and are worth it for the money. I definitelyâ?? believe these are a top 5 doughnuts in Charlotte!

Mary Ann Donut Kitchen Menu with Prices 1601 Liberty St, Allentown

Mary Ann Donut is the best! I got married in May & I’m not much of a cake person so I had doughnuts for my big day. I heard great things about this place and knew we had to try them. My husband and I went one Saturday morning got two doughnuts and coffee. The doughnuts were incredible and I knew then that Mary Ann Donut had to make my doughnuts for my wedding. The whole staff is very friendly & helpful. They were so accommodating & made the process simple and painless. I had nothing to worry about when it came to my doughnuts. On top of the doughnuts the baker made me assorted cookies- they do it all! Everything came out amazing & of course tasted delicious! The guests at my wedding raved about the doughnuts for weeks! I would highly recommend stopping at Mary Ann Donut. I wish I lived closer because I would be there every day. Great atmosphere, amazing bakery items & extremely reasonable prices.

Windmill Bakery – Menu with Prices – 6801 US-41, Evansville

I love their made daily fresh doughnuts. Their prices are high on everything except doughnuts, gas, and coffee. They need more than one employee working at a time.

Peace, Love and Little Donuts of Fort Collins – Menu with Prices – 632 S College Ave, Fort Collins

I’m addicted to this place, even though I don’t normally like doughnuts. The price is high, but YUM!! I did find that the decorating quality varies with who is working that day: newsflash, young guys don’t care and don’t do a great job with getting all the icing and toppings on right. One day I went early and the frosting wouldn’t stick because she said it had just come out of the refrigerator. She just kept trying to dip it instead of spreading it on with a utensile… so those ended up not having much frosting. With those prices, it had better be damn perfect, I feel. Even so, I like these doughnuts a lot!!! Please train staff a bit better for consistency.

Caroletta’s Cakes – Menu with Prices – 4420 Forsyth Rd, Macon

First time visiting today. I was looking for good buttermilk and sour cream doughnuts and I found them. It’s a quaint little shop located in the same shopping plaza as Circa (will visit there next). The customer service was awesome. I was greeted as I walked in and the cashier asked me if I needed any help. I told her I was looking for doughnuts and she said sweet stuff is on the other side but we’re sweet over here also. :). Awwwww. They answered all my questions with a smile and lots of patience. I really appreciate that. This is only a 3 star review because it’s my first visit and I only ordered two doughnuts. The doughnuts were crispy and flaky on the outside and very moist and delicious with a tender crumb on the inside. I warmed mine up because I love warm doughnuts. However, it wasn’t necessary. I look forward to adding more stars when I have placed my croissant order and try more menu items. I am sorry I didn’t get a half dozen of these delicious old fashioned buttermilk and sour cream doughnuts. Also, their caramel cakes look divine.

Two Boys Donuts Menu with Prices 6400 Holly Ave NE Suite H, Albuquerque

Whether the donuts are good or not, that is something that I will never know and now don’t even care to know. It seems you only care to serve people that can go in the mornings and those of us that work until the late afternoon do not matter at all. I need multiple hands to be able to count how many times I have gone by there in the afternoon after work only to find a SOLD OUT sign on the door and the place closed. If I recall, that was even the case on the day of your grand opening. The one time you were open when I was there a couple hours before close, there was just a few donuts to choose from. Lousy business etiquette!!! There is no donut shop or a bakery that closes early constantly because they run out. You have been open long enough to know what kind of supply you have and yet you continue to only make enough to get you through what appears to be the time you would rather work to until the time your hours indicate you actually close. Every donut places continues to make donuts and keep a supply so there are always donuts available. You have lost my business as well as friends and family and those that I work with before we have even had an opportunity to taste one. Closing early because you have sold out is acceptable once or even twice considering you are new but it seems to have become a regular several times a week pattern and that is not a good message to give to potential or even existing customers. People will eventually stop coming all together because they will just start thinking “why bother, they will probably just be sold out”. I will continue to get my donuts at Amy’s who ALWAYS have a supply of donuts and who ALWAYS have a supply for those of us that can only go after work.

Ya-Whoo Donuts – Menu with Prices – 9219 Archibald Ave, Rancho Cucamonga

Came here to feed my doughnut craving around 530am. There was a lone as people were getting their Don ought and coffee fix. What was impressive was the lady knew everyone’s usual orders. Seems like they have a little following here. Good reason for that. Their doughnuts are baked fresh each morning. They have a great selection of them. And 75 cents for 1 doughnut?!?!? Unheard of these days. Wasn’t too greasy. Had a nice crunch on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside. Got the sprinkles one. If I’m craving doughnuts again, this will be my doughnut place. Keep up the good work.

Rise + Roast Menu with Prices 401 Eubank Blvd SE Suite E, Albuquerque

Updated review (5/17/19): I failed to mention that there is a drive-tru for your convenience as well. I went back to try the cake doughnut and the coffee. They were very tasty. I was particularly picky about coffee but the coffee here met my expectation. I ordered a black coffee. The black coffee tasted nutty and sweet and less acidic because it did not have any sourness in it. The cake doughnut was a great accompaniment to the coffee. Though they do not offer regular cake doughnut, I went to the frosted strawberry cake. The texture of the doughnut was fresh, soft and moist. First visit (5/11/19) It’s my first time visiting Rise + Roast. I like the inside of the place – specious and cozy. Although they were not busy, I was greeted with a smiley face as I walked in, which was nice. As for the doughnut selections, a few options were missing from the case because I was there later in the afternoon. Since it’s mother’s day, they have special shaped doughnuts – MOM – which are very cute. I told the person who took my order that it was my first time here so I wanted some recommendations. The other server and he told me that they would eat everything there, which I took this as a good sign for the quality of their products. I ended with a regular doughnut and a Bavarian cream filled doughnut. I came back home to see how they packed the doughnuts, they were separated by wax papers. Good job!! The texture of these doughnuts was very satisfying – chewy but soft. The taste was very sophisticated. The Bavarian cream might be my favorite because the contrast of sweet cream and bitter flavor of chocolate. I have to go back to try their glazed doughnuts and coffee soon.

Carniceria La Sierra – Menu with Prices – 253 E Alpine Ave, Stockton

I am sooooo disappointed in my experience at La Sierra today, I come here maybe 3 times a month to get the cooked tri Tip…. They stop cooking at a certain time, so I always call my order early afternoon for pick up after work…. I have done this several times since I found this place about 2 years ago…. well today I placed my order as I usually do…. and the girl up front… who is usually super sweet…. was like I didn’t get phone orders…. which I knew was not true, instead of saying she forgot or just super busy…. she lied instead…. I told her I was going to write this review she said that’s fine…. so that’s what I am doing and I won’t ever be back… it won’t matter to them, but since I had been a faithful customer, I thought it should have been handled differently. I’m spreading the word on their awful customer service.
