I’m happy to have found Sushi Bento. The place itself is in a tiny little section of La Plaza, only about a ten minute walk from UTRGV/Southmost. When I visited last week at around noon, the limited indoor seating was all full, but there are some crammed-together tables just outside the Plaza entrance and some outdoors. You can order to go, but I wanted to enjoy it immediately, so I sat outside the entrace. The place seems to be run by an older chef couple with a cashier, who all seem to work quite matter-of-factly, though given the business I bet they’re a little harried some days. If you’ve got the whole day free you might want to go a bit later in the afternoon. What’s most important is the food. There is a variety of menu options including maki, bento, nigiri, and donburi plates, ranging from your regular American California rolls to eel nigiri (unagi), masago (smelt fish roe), fried dumplings and miso soup. I do not yet know how often the menu changes. I tried one of the mixed Sushi Bento options, which had a bit of everything for $12. I also grabbed a very tasty canned oolong tea from the little minifridge they have at the front counter, which I -think- includes some sodas and a canned green tea as well. The sushi bento came with a little bit of wasabi and pickled ginger (gari) for cleansing the palate between sushi. Everything looked and tasted fresh and clean. I was not personally a fan of a couple of the things I ate (one looked like a tentacle, maybe octopus or squid, and had a natural chewiness that to me did not match well with all the others) and unfortunately am not familiar enough with sushi to identify what they all were, but everything else was outstanding. I was surprised to find the unagi my favorite; it has a deliciously umami-esque sauce on top and a perfect soft texture. I also really liked the tamagoyaki, which apparently is considered a test of the chef’s skills in Japan. It had a lightly sweet and rich quality that’s perfect as a final ‘dessert’ bite. As far as I know, you can’t find any other sushi restaurant as clearly competent and unique in menu in the Valley. This place is a gem.

Tsukiji Fusion Sushi – Katy – Menu with Prices – 24449 Katy Fwy #400, Katy

INTRO: So I have been craving sushi for quite a while and wanted to try something new. ZP and I came here the other day to see what we could find! The restaurant is located off of i10 so it wasn’t too far of a drive. The interior was pretty normal, nothing too crazy. I did however enjoy the hand-drawn pictures of anime characters along the walls and what sounded like anime openings playing lol FOOD: I ordered 3 pieces of nigiri and half a roll which was ~$12 a little pricey but it was okay as long as I get my sushi. I got one tuna, salmon, and unagi nigiri and then the spicy lover roll which consisted of tuna, spicy mayo, salmon, avo, and crunchy topping. As soon as my plate arrived, I thought it was the perfect amount! I was excited to eat. The roll wasn’t too bad, seemed like spicy tuna (which I was okay with) but where was the crunchy? It seemed like there was missing elements to my roll and that wasn’t a good sign. I moved on to the tuna nigiri and I was quite skeptical about the fish but I took a bite anyways. Now, I used to work at a poke shop so I know how it’s supposed to look like and.. nope. This wasn’t it. The tuna was dull and looked like play-doh and broke apart in my mouth. It did not taste meaty at all, more like a gummy candy.. I tried the salmon next and again; colorless, not firm, and broke apart. Unagi was the same way except way rubbery. Not happy ? -ZP on the other hand got the beef teriyaki bento box which had slices of beef (cooked to your preference), a few pieces of california roll, veggie tempura, and choice of white or fried rice. He really enjoyed this one because the meat was very tender and everything was paired nicely together. The only issue was how big the tempura was.. a HUGE piece broccoli fried in batter isn’t appealing at all. Maybe cut it in half and have two pieces instead? Just a thought. -When you check in on yelp you are able to get a free fried banana and icecream dessert so we got one to share and I have no picture so let me tell you. It was not impressive. As soon as we brought it up to our waiter she says “the banana thing?” lol must be traumatized. We got our dessert in less than a minute and here is how it was presented! About 10 super soggy pieces of tempura fried bananas surrounding a scoup of neopolitan icecream. mmmm.. no. The batter wasn’t evenly distributed among the bananas as there were huge glops of extra batter on the sides of some pieces. OVERALL: I had an open mind to this place since I wanted to get some sushi ya know? ZP said I should have gotten a bento box as well but for one, I wouldn’t be able to finish it all and two, if I want sushi from a sushi restaurant, shouldn’t they have good sushi? I don’t think I will be back since the quality of the fish was either frozen or pretty old. Fresh fish shouldn’t break apart or look dull! It’s terrifying because it’s served raw and that should mean being extra careful!! ?

Surah Korean Cuisine & BBQ – Menu with Prices – 3510 Interstate 70 Dr SE STE A, Columbia

I visited Surah with my two children today and was delighted by the experience. My 8 year old loves tuna nigiri sushi, so we got her 6 pieces of it. When the sushi chef saw her eating it by dunking the rice portion into soy sauce, he came over and showed her the proper way to eat sushi (lightly dip the fish portion in a small amount of soy sauce). I loved the interaction–it was cool to see the chef engaged with my daughter and my son had read about the proper way to eat sushi earlier so he liked seeing it demonstrated too. He offered to make the pieces smaller (basically divide the standard one into two pieces) the next time she comes to make it easier to eat. Both the standard tuna and white tuna were some of the prettiest I’ve seen in Columbia (not saying much), but also would stack up well against sushi in larger cities. The white tuna was especially good with a little mango and lemon zest. We also got an order of octopus nigiri sushi and dumplings that were delightful. My son had a bento box while I had the bibimbap in stone bowl. The bento box looked good but I didn’t try it. The bibimbap was very good with a nice crispy rice layer on the bottom. The egg was soft as it should be. The only thing I didn’t see with it was kimchi. Next time I’ll probably ask for some–I’m sure they have it somewhere. Service was excellent. Our server brought an easier to use set of chopsticks with a pink panda holding them together for my daughter to use and joked around with us a little. At the end we brought home a Surah roll for my wife who thought it was very good as well. I’d definitely come back to explore the menu, and it looks like this would be a good option for healthy lunch on the east side of town. Since it just opened recently, it wasn’t crowded. I really hope this place is able to make it because I think it’s easily one of the better restaurant options in Columbia.

Sake 2 Me Sushi – Menu with Prices – 9205 E 71st St, Tulsa

Wow. What an experience. Small, intimate space with about 15 tables and an eat at bar. Everything was clean and fresh…a great little spot. Staff was friendly and attentive. We stopped in here because I wanted a $12.99 Bento box, which apparently is only for lunches….for dinner they offer some combos, and they run a bit more up to about $20, but are supposed to have larger portions. By the time we looked at the prices, figured on the extra pieces or rolls we would add, we decided on the ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI for $29, each. Now that sounds like a lot. For me that’s huge, because I am the advocate of value, and I am frugal, but have dropped serious change at sushi houses before…The last time I had fresh made (not buffet) AYCE sushi was about 10 years ago, was $40 a plate, and they served “white tuna” (swordfish) because it was a cheaper alternative. If you have ever eaten fresh made sushi, you know how expensive it can be, typically $4-6 per order Nigiri sushi and $8-15 per roll… If you are going to complain about a $30 AYCE price for fresh made sushi, this isn’t your bag. That’s ok, just go elsewhere that’s more your speed. If your ready for a feast, this is it. By the time we were done, we had made, and subsequently devoured, 14 orders of Nigiri sushi and 7 different rolls….yeah.. we got our money’s worth. This would have been well over $120 if we had ordered by the roll/piece. But here’s the key…this wasn’t all rice. The Nigiri sushi pieces were HUGE about 1-1/2 times the size expected with small rice portions. The rolls were also not all rice. Many had a generous portion of crab, but this was always offset with ample toppings of everything from fried crawfish to eel to masago. We left stuffed, and weren’t hungry all day the next day… There were times we just sat and enjoyed the flavors. It was that good. We will be back…not tomorrow, still full.

Little Katana Las Colinas – Menu with Prices – 6420 N MacArthur Blvd #140, Irving

My family and I came here for dinner one night and really enjoyed! We shared a few appetizers, the calamari (delicious and crispy. Had some fried jalapeños in there as well) and the jalapeño popper appetizer (also delicious with raw tuna and crab on top and jalapeño on bottom!). We all really enjoyed these. For entree most of my family for bento boxes. You need to ask for the dinner menu bento boxes if you want to order them, since the dinner bento menu is separate from the regular dinner menu. My boyfriend and I shared three sushi rolls, a classic spicy tuna, the spicy crawfish, and the sunny roll. All were delicious!! And really hit the spot of my sushi craving. All in all amazing food and my mom even enjoyed it! And she’s incredibly picky. As for the service, it was decent but a little lacking. Initially we had to wait a bit for them to get utensils/dinner napkin for us when the appetizers were already served. Secondly, when my mom got her bento box, it was supposed to come with shrimp and vegetable tempura but they skipped it on her plate, leaving just lettuce. When we told our waitress, she agreed. Five minutes later another waitress comes and said it didn’t come with the “nigiri” bento but my dad got that bento, not her. We corrected their mistake but it just took an altercation and misunderstanding to get there.

Sabaidee Sushi & Thai Menu with Prices 193 Lark St, Albany

Now that this restaurant has been open for about six months, I thought I’d stop in for an early weekend dinner, now that I’d heard they have some sushi on the menu. First, the bad news: NO SEATING AT SUSHI BAR (photo). The space for bar seating is instead used to cram in 19 tables. Luckily, there was only one other patron in the restaurant during my visit, and we both sat on the long wooden bench against one wall. I don’t want to imagine how “cozy” this atmosphere would be, if only half of the tables were occupied. I don’t think they have their liquor license yet, so at least there won’t be drunk guests spilling over each other on the tablecloths and napkins. I looked through the menu as the host/ server/ chef/ brought over tea-bag tea. Although disappointed by the very limited nigiri selection, I was able to order my usual introduction of a couple of maki and a handful of nigiri, despite a mix-up in the initial order, where I hoped to try the temaki. While waiting, I looked around at the Thai decor – a little kitsch, but not overdone. The chef, dressed in sweat pants and a white t-shirt with a couple of stains, brought out a thin miso soup, strangely created without adding any tofu. I found the chef with an overly enthusiastic personality, but uneven sushi presentation (photo). The two-plate plating, with a little decoration was not unattractive. The rice itself was very lightly seasoned, much less then I prefer. The maki was not bad, and with 10 pieces each for the eel cucumber and the spicy salmon cucumber avocado, it seemed a bit too much. Unfortunately, the salmon maki was covered in a mayo sauce, which I have never really enjoyed. Personal preference. The nigiri, was a bit sloppier. The gunkenmaki masago ended up with roe all over the plate. I have found unagi usually is prepared with a small strip of nori wrapped around the eel on top of the rice, but not here. The strangest was the hamachi – one of the pieces was actually tough to chew. The taste was not bad, but that is a most unique texture. I don’t think I want to repeat that. I hope they can improve, and I’ll return in a bit. 2019 07 06. S08.

Sumo Sushi and Japanese Restaurant Menu with Prices 3174 Tilghman St, Allentown

Came here with friends for lunch. There were about 10 of us, and service is commendable despite the large group. We were able to return to work timely. . . Two of us had the bento box. I had the salmon, my favorite bento, and it is comparable to others, but nothing extraordinary. The shrimp tempura though was crunchy; I could hear the crunch from across the table. Everyone was pleased!. . The best part? Sumo gets A++ for presentation. Even simple sushi was well presented. Someone in our group ordered the fire dragon sushi which came with very attractive open flames!. . The restaurant appeared clean with enough open space in between tables. There appears to be a couple of rooms at the back of the restaurant also.. . canâ??t wait to go back!

Osaka Sushi – Menu with Prices – 8860 Minnie Brown Rd #7839, Montgomery

In terms of what the area offers for Sushi, Osaka stands slightly above the rest. They have a decent selection of rolls if that’s what is on your mind, but most are slathered in some sort of sauce or another (Usually eel sauce or a version of masago). I enjoy the occasional roll with a sauce drizzled across, but about 90% of the rolls are drenched in sauce. My goal was to keep it small: I ordered Hamachi (yellowtail) nigiri and one of their rolls. The waiter asked me if I wanted the hamachi as sushi. Slightly confused, I repeated “nigiri”–long story short, the yellowtail nigiri never came out, nor was I charged for it. I ordered the Crazy Roll: it was unmemorable. The taste of the roll was drowned out by the insane amount of masago covering the roll. I did try out the Takoyaki from the hot appetizer menu. It was ok–small chunks of octopus was found throughout but it wasn’t anything mind-blowing. I can’t speak for anything else that comes out of the kitchen, but what I did see whisk out of there looked very appetizing. The staff is friendly, maybe not the brightest when it comes to their product but my glass was never empty. (The bright side, eh?) This place is just ok and not really for me. But don’t let that deter you–if you enjoy beautifully prepared rolls, albeit covered in a sauce, then Osaka might be your place. Then again, you may be better off eating a few spoonfuls of eel sauce or mayo to get the same thing you’ll eat when you come here. If you have low expectations about sushi in Montgomery, AL then you might feel better about Osaka than I did.

Bento Express Menu with Prices 1652 Oak St, Bakersfield

Visiting Bakersfield as my daughter will be playing soccer for CSUB in the fall. Found this little gem of deliciousness and I will definitely be back! I had the teriyaki chicken bento and my daughter had the unagi donburi. So much food comes with the bento dinners and all of it was so yummy! The price was reasonable. You can taste the care and umami in each dish! Very authentic Japanese food in a quaint and relaxing atmosphere. Our waiter was a sweetheart! Thank you for a memorable evening!

World Gourmet – Menu with Prices – 6010 Stevenson Blvd, Fremont

I don’t know why this place has such bad reviews. Maybe I didn’t notice a lot of things. My experience was not bad- this isn’t fine dining, but it’s serviceable and the food wasn’t gross or anything. Also the staff was quick and I felt pretty friendly. I didn’t feel rushed and they weren’t rude to me. I came here for lunch with my mom and it’s $14 a person. Their sushi/nigiri selection is pretty decent! They had most cuts of fish, even squid, octopus, and surf clam. What I thought was kind of strange was they they were serving regular salmon nigiri, but had smoked salmon nigiri which was not as delicious in my opinion. But the options were decent! They had a lot of rolls too, a variety of different fishes on top and fillings on the inside. My biggest complaint about the sushi in general was that it had SO MUCH RICE. Like they could easily cut the rice portions in half and it would probably be fine. There was SO MUCH RICE. That’s probably how they get people full. There was dim sum and standard Chinese dishes. They had stir-fry vegetables, chicken, beef, pork, you name it. Their potstickers were decent. I also helped myself to the crawfish which was not too salty and actually some of the biggest crawfish I’ve seen at a buffet! Some of them were, dare I say, huge! They had salt and pepper crab too which most people piled into their plates. Temper your expectations. Come here for lunch, pay $14, and enjoy a variety of pretty safe and standard food. They even have a whole Mongolian BBQ grill station! What more could you ask for, other than no food poisoning I guess.

Hawk & Chick – Menu with Prices – 1426 Dundas St W, Toronto

Hawk and Chick is located near Dundas/Gladstone. This small eatery specializes in Korean bento boxes, pressed sushi, and banchan (Korean side dishes). It is mainly a take out restaurant although there are some areas to sit on near the window and a bench in the store. I believe they are owned and operated by a mother and son team. I had heard good things about the place and decided to drop by on a Friday night to order some takeout. I opted for the chicken karaage bento; cost for the bento including tax was around $15. Service was friendly and attentive and I waited about 5 min for my bento. My karaage chicken bento was delicious! It came with karaage chicken, purple rice, lotus root, kimchi, and a crab/veggie slaw. The karaage chicken was flavourful, moist, and had a great crunch to it (considering the fact that I started eating my bento probably after 30 min I had left the store). The kimchi had just the right amount of heat and the crab and veggie slaw that came with the bento was a light and refreshing addition to the meal. The purple rice was a bonus as it looked like a lot at first but I ended up finishing the whole bento. Overall, great delicious place for Korean bento! Would recommend!

Yatai Sushi Express – Menu with Prices – 8976 Foothill Blvd, Rancho Cucamonga

I’ve tried probably a half-dozen sushi places throughout the Rancho area and Yatai beats every single one of them out in price, taste, and friendliness of the staff. Their happy hour goes for most of the day, making each roll less than $10, and they have options for either AYCE OR a la carte menu items. Makes it super convenient when deciding where to go because we aren’t locked into AYCE when we want to get our “usual” rolls or there are only a couple of us and it’s not worth the price bump. Their specialty rolls are some of the most unique and best-tasting specialty rolls I’ve had without them being weird (what is it with most places exclusively having baked specialty rolls?). Their yatai and “coloured” rolls – the pink and orange – and to-die-for, and I have literally never had better octopus nigiri. I always come out of Yatai full, happy, and not feeling like I just spent my entire paycheck on the meal. I’ve brought my fiance, my friends, my siblings, my parents, my boss, and my coworkers here and they all love it. Whenever I’m in the Rancho area and getting sushi, I come to Yatai.

Happy Bento – Menu with Prices – 8407 Haven Ave, Rancho Cucamonga

A friend and I decided to grab food to take the the brewery for lunch yesterday and while looking for some lunch options I found Happy Bento on Yelp, and I am so glad I did! This is a hidden gem located off of civic center drive and is very blocked off from the main road. If you didn’t know about it, you’d have no idea a shopping center was back there! Their menu has perfectly portioned out bento boxes, each with a variety of different entrees and sides. I personally ordered the box that had chicken teriyaki, salad, fried rice, and fried wantons. Everything here is very reasonably priced and the perfect portion for lunch!
