You’d think living in Southern California means a bountiful variety of authentic Mexican food on every corner. Unfortunately not. Mexican food in the south land has watered down to cheap imitation. Usually Mexican restaurants throw something with meat, rice, beans and a Pico de Gallo looking medley together in a tortilla (probably flour) and voi la, Mexican food. We’ve really done a disservice to Mexican cuisine here, but unfortunately most people will never know better. Until they visit Sabroso. Sorry, you won’t walk away with 2 tacos rice and beans for $8.99 here but you will walk away with enlightened taste buds. First of all, their corn tortillas. Home made from scratch. You can taste the corn as you bite through fluffy layers of warm, moist tortilla. I’d be willing to bet that a super majority of people of non-Mexican descent have never eaten such a delight. We also ordered their guacamole. The guacamole was pricey, but delicious. It was creamy with cilantro, lime, onion and a hint of tomato. The complimentary chips they serve are delicious too – generously salted and perfectly crispy. Finally, the main event was the chicken pozole. A hearty, hefty bowl arrived on my table with a side platter of fix ins – cabbage, cilantro, onions and limes. The broth was deep red and piping hot. Inside the hominy corn was perfectly tender and nearly melted in my mouth. This bowl, at $12.95 was piled with so much meat the value was incredible. There were mounds of marinated shredded chicken. Served with your choice of corn tortilla or chips, I shoved spoon after spoon, and bite after bite of tortilla laden or chip covered soup in my mouth. I was very pleased with the excellent service by our waitress who was so friendly and prompt. This place is amazing and well worth the price. It’s sad that quality Mexican food is so hard to find in Los Angeles of all places. But I’d gladly drive down to OC to get a taste of this food again. The table next to us got some sort of wet burrito that could easily feed two, perhaps I’ll try it next time.

Burrito Urbano – Menu with Prices – 673 Glide St, Rochester

We decided to try Burrito Urbano specifically because of the great reviews we saw here on Yelp. Very glad we did. Many of the Mexican places we have tried around Rochester have been weighed and found wanting. Burrito Urbano NAILED IT on flavor, service and effort. Starting out…they do not pour you chips from a bag to bring to your table, they fry them fresh right on site and they are perfectly bronzed and salted. I might also add that we went for lunch and the chips were fresh from the fryer and warm as they were in the process of making their day’s supply. We polished off one basket and they quickly brought us more. The salsa verde was fantastic also. To be honest, I could spend an afternoon there just indulging in the chips! Each of 3 guests at my table had a different meal and a different meat. I had the Burrito Supremo with carnitas and have not a bad word to say about it. Great flavor on the carnitas and the crispy tortilla was very nice to have instead of the raw tortilla that many places serve. My wife had the Burrito Frito and she loved it! A fried burrito served with salad, guacamole, sour cream, beans and chips. It look very appetizing and I must confess that my love of their chips prompted me to finish off her chips and beans when she had had her fill. My nephew had the regular burrito and his only criticism was that the chicken could have used more seasoning. We all decided to split the fried tortilla bowl with ice cream, Nutella and caramel (the name of this dessert escapes me at the moment but it is easy to find on the menu). This was the perfect way to finish off the meal. It was enough for 3 people to pick at it and have our fill of sweets. A VERY tasty dessert. The Nutella upon the exceedingly creamy vanilla was incredible and of course I already told you that I loved their homemade chips, well, this tortilla bowl with just the perfect amount of sugar was equally fantastic. Our server, Paula, was very attentive and cheerful and knowledgeable about the menu. All in all it was a very good experience and we left feeling very satisfied. We will indeed be returning to Burrito Urbano.

Taqueria La Cabana – Menu with Prices – 4014 Indian River Rd, Chesapeake

I’ve been hearing my neighbor rave about this place since shortly after they opened. Apparently he has a regular night when he dines here WEEKLY. So – one day when I was feeling mucho lazy I used a competing dining delivery app. It’s within a 5 minute drive but I simply didn’t feel like putting a bra on to go inside to pick up a takeout order. ? It was THE fastest delivery order I’ve ever had and believe me – it was worth every cent. My order consisted of the chicken chimichangas entree (fried) that comes w rice and guacamole salad. I also ordered a side of refried beans and the cheese dip. Included at no additional cost were fresh fried tortilla chips w both red salsa and white sauce. (Don’t judge! I got a good 2.5 meals out of this) Everything was incredibly fresh and delicious. I believe they make their own tortillas – both corn and flour – because they didn’t taste like typical Mexican restaurant fare. Both rice and beans were yum. Even the lettuce/guacamole/tomato salad on the side w sour cream seemed unusually fresh. Tortilla chips were still hot. Salsa is super tasty – lots of flavor but not too hot. The white sauce had a bit extra tang with a tad more heat. Loved them both! I enjoyed my leftovers a day and a half later. Obviously fried tortillas don’t reheat as well and the shredded chicken got a bit dried out in the microwave, but I just added the salsa and was able to fully enjoy that second meal. My husband was upset I ate there without him so I suspect we’ll go and dine in soon. More on that later!

Mariscos Acapulco – Menu with Prices – 3301 Singleton Blvd, Dallas

Finally authentic Mexican food in Dallas, with corn tortilla soft tacos, served with cilantro, onions, and fresh lime. I had the El Pastor taco plate. The meat was very flavorful, tender, and had a little kick. The fajita meat tacos were perfect. Rice and beans were good. Loved the fresh chips and salsa. Don’t let the outside fool you, it is the best Mexican food I’ve ever had in Dallas.

La Poblanita Deli – Menu with Prices – 12145 S Cleveland Ave, Fort Myers

We were in Ft Myers and expecting to have a big dinner wanted a lighter lunch. Iâ??m Mexican American and never tire of Mexican food. Tacos fit the bill as far as a light lunch goes. We searched for best tacos and then selected a restaurant that was near the area we had to go.. . This is located in a strip mall so there is lots of parking and a lot of coming and going. We walked in and it was fairly busy. There was a chalk board menu up on the wall we were trying to read as it was in Spanish, which I do not know! Pretty quick a young woman told us to sit anywhere. As she was the only one taking orders and delivering food it took a minute before she came to our table. We asked for a menu in English and she pointed up at the board and said this is the menu. The front sign said tamales and not seeing those I promptly asked about that. I was disappointed to hear tamales are only available on the weekend, Saturday morning beginning at 10 am. I will be returning when I relocate!. . She brought us chips and salsa. All the salsas were too hot for my liking. The chips were freshly made as far as I could tell and just the right amount of salty. Drinks are taken from the deli coolers, everything from beer to soft drinks, help yourself!. . I ordered 2 tacos with steak. It comes with onions and cilantro if you want it but thatâ??s it. Let me tell you it comes with a lot of steak which was cooked perfectly. So much flavor, simple delicious. I ordered a side order of beans and it came in a huge bowl. Again very good but too much for me to eat.. . My husband was a little irritated with me because he also wanted steak and if you order 2 tacos they must be the same meat. So he ended up with chicken, also just onions and cilantro. I gave him a bite but I was not splitting one steak for one chicken!. . I will absolutely be returning to this restaurant even though the menu is much smaller than Mexican chain restaurants you might visit. Lots of locals were here which to me says food is like homemade. I canâ??t wait to try their tamales.

Dos Reales Family Mexican Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 1100 Broadway, Everett

We were staying at the Red Lion, just down the street, so we thought we would try it out. It was ‘muy delicioso’. The owner was very welcoming and offered homemade guacamole to go with our chips and salsa. The guacamole was to die for! I also had a magarita to go with my carnitas. My husband had a combination plate with enchiladas. tamales, and taco. Our dinners were delicious. I love Mexican food so I really judge a restaurant on how well they make their beans. Many places use canned beans and you can tell. These are made from scratch so you can taste the difference. This place is quaint and reasonably priced. We wanted to stop by Sunday for some menudo but alas Sunday is the only day they are closed.

Don Arturo?s Cocina y Cantina – Menu with Prices – 3315 N President George Bush Hwy #100, Garland

The chips are good…the salsa has a serious kick but we thought it would be better warm. It is also a very thin salsa. I had the mixed fajitas (I ordered chicken but he sold me on the mixed). I don’t know that I’d get them again. The chicken was just okay…the beef had good flavor but was a little chewy for my taste. They came out with cilantro on top, a lot. I tried to scrape some of it off. The grilled tomatoes were a no-go. The rice was okay. He had the sopes….one picadillo and one shredded beef. They gave him a pastor one by accident. The shredded beef was his favorite – tender with decent flavor. Second fave was the pastor – also tender. The picadillo was last, just the flavor didn’t do it for him. Black beans and refried beans were enjoyed. The guacamole on top is a thinner guacamole, not very chunky. We asked if they had any other salsa because my mouth was fire – and they had a milder and spicier one. The mild was strange, we didn’t like it. The spicier was a kick in the rear…too much for me, even with a slight dip. We’d probably go back if we were in the area and wanted Mexican…but I would let spend $16.99 on those fajitas again.

Casa Viva Mexican/Seafood – Menu with Prices – 18911 S Tamiami Trail #17, Fort Myers

Went here for dinner on a Saturday night. We came in and sat down and it was at least 10 minutes before we ever even saw an employee. She finally came over and handed us some worn out dirty menus. We ordered guacamole and chips to start. It was a bowl full of some kind of soupy avocado mixture and came with a small amount of chips. It had an odd flavor and was not good. We did not receive any chips and salsa like most Mexican restaurants offer. Two of us had the fish tacos which came with some fried shrimp on the side and French Fries. Not sure why tacos do not come with rice & beans. The “fish taco” was one small piece of fried fish, not even as long as the tortilla, with a little cabbage and a lot of sauce. Not good. The fried shrimp were really just some breading and a tail. The only reason I give them 2 stars is because the prices are low, our beer was cold and my husband had chicken enchiladas that he enjoyed. The service was not good and the place could use a deep cleaning.

Taqueria Miguel – Menu with Prices – 3301 Broadway Ave #4837, West Palm Beach

Ordered 3 carne asada tacos and a large chips & guacamole. Took about 10 minutes. I didn’t mind waiting because that means it was fresh. I asked if the guacamole was fresh from today (before I ordered it) and he went and got the container, looked at it and said yes and even showed it to me. The tacos are good. They put a large amount of onions, cilantro and queso fresco. Their tortillas are interesting. Normally, Mexican tacos are served doubled up (2 tortillas) because of the thinness but theirs are actually thick. No need for two. The guacamole lacked salt but other than that it was delicioussss and I consider myself a sort of “guacamole connoisseur” lol. The worst part is there is no horchata to wash it down. It’s not the same to eat authentic Mexican tacos without horchata (at least for me)! Oh, and their salsa verde is in point!

La Troje Bar and Grill – Menu with Prices – 3001 Pablo Kisel Blvd suite b, Brownsville

To start of the place has a very comfortable atmosphere, they had excellent taste in mexican music from oldies to new. It had fine decor, and they were able to attend is all very well although we were a huge crowd. They offered chips and salsa and im not talking about your regular chips and salsa they served it in a authentic real molcajete that included nopales and queso panela which was a huge bonus for me personally as a hispanic native. We ordered thethe Parrillada for 4 that included carne asada, chicken fajita, pork sausage, choriqueso, grilled onions, tortillas, guacamole, charro beans, and baked potatoes. I gotta say the price for it was kinda intimidating, but i do not regret it at all. It was well worth it, everything was not only really delicious in flavor but it was also a huge portion of food that I think would feed probably about 5-6 people. Overall I was very satisfied with my experience and will definitely return. *Oh and on a side note I also loved the tortillas they’re handmade and have cilantro in the maza which makes them so flavorful.

Los Almuerzos Mexicanos – Menu with Prices – 138-21 Jamaica Ave, Jamaica

If you reside in Queens and do not want to drive to areas of great Mexican food – well you found your place. First off. Don’t bother with food app deliveries. If you obtain their number they deliver for free!! The delivery guy is very friendly and efficient. Tip him well. I would not say the food is 5/5 fresh though it’s pretty darn close. I’d give the ingredients regarding quality 4/5. That’s pretty high for this area of Queens. Sorry. I have a car. I compare all restaurants equally. I’ve read the reviews. One review noted the prices were a bit steep. I beg to differ. I think they are more than adequately priced considering what you are ordering. Though respectively speaking. Everyone has a different budget for restaurants, so I get it. So far I’ve tried the Guacamole, and tortilla chips. The chips are made on premise. Served warm, the guacamole ( not guac – say it out loud, and you’ll see how idiotic it sounds) was a bit creamy for my taste. Though I think it will suffice for most. I always go for the salsa and chips. That’s my personal choice. The rice and beans have a abundance of flavor. A great side dish. I’ve only had the shrimp tacos. They are prepared pretty well. It would be perfect if it had chopped onion and cilantro, though I’m being a bit picky. The beverages!!! They have hibiscus tea, tamarind, and horchata – all are great. This is my general order and it’s always been consistent. I cannot testify for the other foods available due to my diet. Though I can say without a doubt I’m thoroughly pleased with this restaurant. Deserts. I ordered the flan once. It was decent. Though I do not think it was homemade. If you must crave the deserts – go for it. Though as stated. I believe they are made somewhere else. Give the place a try. You’ll be more than satisfied.

Fuzzy’s Taco Shop – Menu with Prices – 1511 Hewitt Dr, Waco

I tried Fuzzy’s for the first time and didn’t like it. I’ll talk about the positive things first, followed by the negative. The restaurant was clean, lots of open space, however the staff members are inattentive. There was no one at the takeout station. One staff member looked directly at me and I tried to flag her down and she walked away, this happened twice until I had to walk up to her and ask if I could please have my to-go order. My order was ready and sitting there behind a counter, and I probably should’ve just grabbed it and walked out, but I didn’t know for sure if it was my order, and I didn’t want to look like I was stealing food. I love that you can order food online, it makes easy to customize your order–However, they still got my order wrong. I asked for flour tortillas, and got soft corn tortillas instead and honestly, soft corn tortillas are so gross to me, they taste like soggy chips. The food was mediocre to bad. For starters: I liked the seasoned tortilla chips at first, but then after eating a few more chips, I realized they taste like Doritos and that really grossed me out. The $5 guacamole was very bland, it tasted like smashed avocado with some onions. It has no seasoning, no peppers, no lime/lemon zest flavor, and it didn’t have enough cilantro. The avocado ranch sauce that came with the jalapeño bottlecaps is good. However, the $5 “lightly battered” fried jalapeño bottlecaps were heavily battered, I like that they were spicy, but the batter was so thick it ruined it–I ate 4 bites and threw the rest in the trash. Overall, I don’t recommend ordering chips & guacamole and the fried jalapeño bottlecaps. Not worth the calories or money. Tacos: These are all thin, small tacos, and they gave me the wrong tortillas so they were served on a soggy soft corn tortilla, the lettuce was soggy, there was barely any meat, presentation was extremely sloppy. I liked the meat in the brisket taco however it was like two tiny tiny chunks of brisket. The grilled fish taco was so gross, I could barely tell it was fish, it was very cheap fish too–a hard pass on that. My husband said the shredded chicken taco was okay, but again all these tacos had soggy lettuce, barely any meat, (barely any ingredients!), not alot of flavor or texture, not worth the calories! soggy and sloppy and thin. In conclusion, I might not come back, but if someone wants to dine in, I might go along and order something different. I’d like to try something with the brisket, maybe a burrito bowl or possibly a taco but on a hard shell because the soft shell tacos are way too soggy.

La Poblanita Deli Menu with Prices 767 St John St, Allentown

Small, family owned business restaurant/ bodega type of setting. I have been in so many Mexican restaurants in Allentown and Bethlehem and this one stands out. I ordered Carnitas and chorizo tacos, and chicken flautas with a side lf Guacamole. The meat was well cooked, with a delicious taste while the tacos had the right amount of meat, fresh cilantro and onion also their green sauce was absolutely tatsty and medium hot. Their Flautas were fresh, crunchy but soft at the same time, full of chicken topped with fresh lettuce, onion, tomatoes, avocados and white sauce. Lastly their guacamole was also fresh and delicious, I truly felt like in heaven while eating there. Thanks so much! Best Mexican food In the Lehigh Valley Area!
