I was at the African American Library and it got me in the mood for some BBQ. Since I was right in the area, I decided to try this joint out. It is not identifiable from the street, you have to turn by the Jade Chinese restaurant place and then there is a sign set up to point you in the right direction. It is actually behind the building and if you aren’t looking for it, you would pass right by it. This is not a place where you go in and sit and eat. To go, only. The young man who took my order was respectful, calling me “ma’am” and explaining what items were available. I ended up with a rib sandwich and a side of mac and cheese along with sweet tea and lemon cake. The sweet tea was…different. Not bad, definitely sweet, but the flavor was not what I would normally associate with sweet tea. Perhaps it was out of a bottle or can? The serving of mac and cheese was small, but delicious and well seasoned. I could barely eat it after I finished my rib sandwich. The sauce was delicious, but unusual to me. It had a mustard color to it, but was sweet and tangy. There were about 4-5 ribs on two pieces of white bread and I finished it all, despite being overly full. Tender meat, great sauce. I am still too full, 2 hours later, to even look at the lemon cake. There were a variety of other desserts offered – red velvet cake, chocolate cake, sweet potato pie – as well. They do accept credit/debit with a $5 minimum along with ID. I would love to taste some of their other offerings, because I was pleased with my meal.

Austin’s Live Fire Barbecue – Menu with Prices – 421 W Main Ave Suite 104, Spokane

Went to Austin for the first time along with friends who were returning. The restaurant has a simple setting and casual atmosphere. The service was very good. I was happily surprised to see a full bar and I had a good Margarita. Our group ordered ribs and brisket. The brisket was my favorite, but the ribs were good too. The brisket was as tender as could be. Not too much fat and not overly smoked which was really nice. Perfect! Ribs had a great flavor, but they were full size ribs and I prefer baby backs. Some had sweet potato fries and others the regular fries and the Mac n cheese. All were good, but I swear I would come back for the regular fries alone!! They were that good. I donâ??t know what you would call the cut because I have never seen it before , maybe a spiral ?, but it made them tender and crisp at the same time. Incredibly good. The only reason I did not give this a 5* rating is because they offered no bread. Not even a specialty one to buy. Come on guys gotta have Corn bread, biscuits, rolls or something with BBQ. In any case we look forward to our next trip.

Callaloo Trinidadian Kitchen – Menu with Prices – 351 N Mulberry St, Lancaster

At work, my neurosurgeon talked about his recent visit to Callaloo & was raving about their jerk chicken. My husband & I went there for his birthday dinner this week. There is a 10-spot parking area (off street) first lot on the NW corner of Mulberry Street and Lemon Street for the restaurant’s patrons; the restaurant is on the SE corner Mulberry and Lemon Streets. We called ahead so we had a guaranteed table. Scott was very patient and explained their menu and suggested side dishes to go with our entrees, and the portion sizes of each. We both started with the Char Sui Pork Belly and Pineapple Chow and it was delicious. If you are starving, this size is good for one person. I had the Buss-Up-Shut Curried Beef. I read about the buss up shut flatbread and was looking forward to it. It was hot and soft and flaky; it came with two dips and a cucumber relish. The curried beef is not spicy, just delicious; enjoyed the potatoes and chickpeas in the stew. My husband had the Raw n’ Mac, a full rack of baby back ribs and mac and cheese. The ribs were nice and tender (I would say better than Harvey’s BBQ). We finished up with Coconut Bread Pudding with dulce de leche caramel sauce and Ginger and Lemongrass Creme Brûlée (they were out of key lime pie that night) and coffee. I didn’t enjoy the bread pudding; it was a little bit on the dry side and not much flavor to it.Would definitely go back to try the rest of the menu. And maybe more of the char siu pork belly and buss up shut!

Hot Spot Barbecue – BBQ – Menu with Prices – 901 E La Rua St, Pensacola

Hot Spot barbecue is the real deal. My friend brought me here insisting that I could get Texas quality barbecue in Pensacola Florida. Naturally, I was skeptical… But that was about to change. I ordered the brisket and ribs… no dice. All out. So I order the pulled pork and ribs… Strike two. “What is going on here?” And then it occurred to me… if they were sold out of everything, they must be doing something right. I ended up with two giant pieces of sausage and a plate full of rib scraps, ends, and other pieces. It was amazing! Dry rubbed with the right amount of crust. For pork ribs, they take a backseat to no one. The sausage is a beef and pork mix, with a slight hint of maple flavor. The amount they give you is ridiculous and well worth the money. I had three sides with my meal. Mac & cheese-it was great. Potato salad-also a tad on the Sweetside, but again I was not offended. It’s delicious. The true surprise though was the Brunswick stew. Tomato-based, almost chili consistency soup with various pieces of barbecue meats, peas, and corn. Finished off the meal with a piece of their famous icebox lemon pie which is phenomenal. The only thing wrong with this place is it closed on Sundays which means I can’t go back tomorrow. This is a family business, where you truly feel like they care about you being there.

Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen – Menu with Prices – 1202 Celebrity Cir, Myrtle Beach

I thoroughly enjoyed our first experience. We arrived around 4 pm on a Saturday afternoon and there was no wait. We were able to be seated upon entering. Our server Tony was excellent. I saw a review before arriving that said some of the food was cold and I told Tony this was a concern. He made sure all of our food came out hot. I love the Family Style concept this restaurant offers. I dislike buffet dining because I can never eat my monies worth so to speak. Their family style setting offers unlimited portions until you’ve had enough. There’s no takeout boxes or to-go cups. Honestly you won’t need them however you can take your dessert home in case you’re too stuffed from your meal. I love bread and the chedder biscuits did not disappoint. They were fluffy, moist and not overly doughy. They were just right. The peach sweet tea and strawberry lemonade were perfect. We ordered the Savannah Family Style meal (3 homestyle entrees and 4 sides) – we selected the fried chicken, ribs, fried catfish, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, broccoli casserole and creamed corn. For the entrees – The ribs were cooked perfect, they were tender falling off the bone and the sauce was tastey. The fried chicken was on point and the fried catfish was delicious. They weren’t overly breaded and they were seasoned just right. Now about the sides – the collard greens were salty. After adding a lil hot sauce it leveled out the salt. The macaroni and cheese was creamy, cheesy and delicious. The cream corn was yummy. The broccoli casserole wasn’t the best. I expected more but this fell short. It’s nothing to write home about. Now on to dessert. The table next to us said the the peach cobbler was too sweet and not all that good so we opted to skip that. We ordered the vanilla and chocolate ooey gooey butter cakes. Let’s just say they were the perfect ending to a overly filling delicious meal. Overall this was a great experience for it to be my first visit. I would certainly come back.

The Bar @ Saucehouse Menu with Prices 820 W Broad St, Athens

I’m not usually a big BBQ person but I do appreciate BBQ once in a (long) while. My workplace ordered some dishes for a work lunch and although we were in the area, Saucehouse wasn’t able to deliver to us because they require a minimum of a 25-person party in order to deliver so my supervisor had to go pick it up. We ordered a variety of dishes (pulled pork, beef brisket, ribs, Brunswick stew, mac n’ cheese, baked beans, green bean casserole, potato salad, slaw, peach cobbler) and we also had an assortment of sauces (house, sweet molasses, pork, very hot & sweet, Alabama White/horseradish) but I only tried a few. The beef brisket was on point. It wasn’t overly shredded but the pieces weren’t in big chunks either; it was just the right size for eating and enjoying. The pulled pork was a little dry but it was more enjoyable when paired with a sauce. You really can’t go wrong with green bean casseroles, which I did enjoy, and the mac n’ cheese looked baked, which I didn’t mind but it was a little dry. The ribs were alright; I can honestly say that my friend makes better ribs but maybe it’s a personal preference kind of thing because I like my ribs to be able to fall off the bone. The very hot & sweet was the only sauce I tried but I really liked it. I couldn’t taste anything sweet but there was a tartness to it, and the spice gradually built up as you continued to eat it. I definitely recommend it to all you spicy-lovers out there. My coworkers enjoyed Saucehouse; they like it better than Fox Bros in Atlanta. I liked the beef brisket the best out of everything we ordered. Would I recommend Saucehouse? I don’t know, but I would recommend trying it out despite my review because who knows? Maybe you’ll like it better than I did.

Ribs Against The Machine – Menu with Prices – 4227 San Fernando Rd, Glendale

If you haven’t heard yet, there’s a new pop up where Dave’s Hot Chicken used to be before they opened their first brick and mortar store in Koreatown. Ribs Against The Machine barely opened a month ago but due to popularity, it has extended its business hours. They used to open 8:45pm, then 8pm, and now at 7pm. I had the chance to visit the location before it gets too crowded. I met Armen and Edgar who were both friendly towards customers. They explained the process of getting these ribs ready for customers. Apparently, they slow cook the ribs for about six hours to make it really tender. I tried the Cornbread Rib-Mitch which is their signature mini cornbread muffins, with chopped up rib meat with a side of barbecue sauce and pickles. I requested a mild level of spiciness but if I had known ahead that the muffins will be on a sweet side, then I would have asked for it to a lot spicier. The merriment of sweet and spicy tastes will be perfect. I also had a piece of rib meat and I tell you, it’s so tender and delicious. I could easily scrape the meat off the bones. Since they just opened, I do under that they are still trying to get themselves comfortably situated. I’m sure after they polish off all the jitters and kinks, they’ll be handling this like certified pros. I recommend giving it a try. They are open daily except Mondays from 7pm until sell out.

The Goat & Vine – Menu with Prices – 41911 5th St #100, Temecula

I’m a fan! Always so loud, crowded & always has a waitlist. But service is always great. Everything we tried has been delicious. Expensive. $18-24 for pizzas & I think $12-15 for sandwiches? But the food is so good I keep coming back. The food I tried: (from fav to least) mother’s meatballs: juicy, tender & flavorful. Smothered in a flavorful marinara sauce & cheese. Comes with 2 cheesy bread. So good. Favorite turkey sandwich: I’m not a fan of sandwiches, but I LOVED this. It has brie, basil aioli & fig paste. Sweet, a little tangy, & savory. Just tasty & so good. I crave it often since the day I tried it. Thailand pizza: delicious! Sounds weird, but so good. A little sweet, savory & slightly spicy. The goat pizza: looks so bland & simple but surprisingly flavorful. I love the goat cheese with the basil, tomatoes, hint of lemon zest & the bulb of roasted garlic to smear on top. Steak & Gorgonzola pizza: plated so beautifully. Tender thin slices of steak. It was good. The carnitas pizza: my kids loved this. It’s good, just didn’t suit my taste. There’s so much to try on the menu. I told my husband we aren’t allowed to come back unless we try something new. The popular hatch honey sandwich & pizza is next on my list. Can’t wait to come back!

Bay Barbeque – Menu with Prices – 59 N Florida St, Mobile

Wow! What can I say?!?! The ribs are AMAZING!!! I drove all the way from Ft Walton Beach to get some of these delicious ribs. I had a full rack of ribs with the majority of them having the regular dry rub and 2 ribs with the exotic rub. Both rubs were amazing and the exotic had a slight kick. These ribs were not only falling off the bone, they tasted amazing. They had just the right amount of smoke and the flavor was awesome. DO NOT use BBQ sauce on these ribs, you will kill the flavor! Good BBQ doesn’t need sauce! The owner was very humble and eager to answer any questions I had about the ribs. He is a former veteran and offered me a military discount. I will definitely be back as soon as I can get back to Mobile. Too bad we don’t have ribs this good in the Florida panhandle!

NKG Café & Soulfood – Menu with Prices – 2626 Rio Linda Blvd, Sacramento

I love this spot!! The inside is SPOTLESS. Dining room and bathrooms both. Angel greeted us when we came in with our two kiddos at 6ish on a Friday! It was quiet which was nice. Angel put the TV on for us; she was super friendly. The owner, Leilani, also came out and said hello; super sweet and chill vibe. We ordered 2 x 3 Meats/2 Sides and a Chicken Strips (w/ fries) for the kiddos. Sides: Mac N Cheese, Potato Salad, Cornbread, and Red Beans & Rice. Everything was delicious; husband didn’t rave about the potato salad or red beans & rice. I really enjoyed the cornbread and butter (wiped all through my leftover bbq sauce) and the Mac N Cheese was sooooo good; perfect comfort food!!! All of the meat was delicious (ribs, chicken, hot link, and tri tip!) and the chicken tenders for our kiddos were super tender! Perfect!! As we were leaving we grabbed two pieces of sweet potato pie; the girls really wanted chocolate cake so Miss Leilani just threw in two. I love the energy in this place. It was a relaxing environment and we will definitely be back!! Thank you!

M & M Sandwich Shop – Menu with Prices – 2602 N Armenia Ave, Tampa

I usually wait to write a review, but I was sold after my first trip today. I ordered a hot roast beef (open face) platter with fries and slaw, and a crab cake platter with mac & cheese. Both platters were delicious – the roast beef sandwich featured very tender shredded roast beef, and delicious sweet bread. The crab cakes were extrodinary, and moderately sized for the price. Might I add the mac & cheese had me over the moon as well. All of M & M’s pricing is extremely fair

Root & Bone Miami Beach – Menu with Prices – 1801 Collins Ave, Miami Beach

I wanted to LOVE this place but was a little let down by the chicken biscuit sandwich and overly sweet cocktail. Starting with the good: the root veggie “tostones” are not traditional smashed green plantain tostones, but the perfectly crisp yucca, fingerlings, etc were to die for. The mango watermelon salad was refreshing and balanced. I got a cocktail that seemed akin to an aviation but found it overly sweet and honestly made me feel like I got one of those sweet martinis at a chain restaurant. The chicken and biscuit was the biggest disappointment, not because it wasn’t good but because i felt it could have been better. Each component seemed solid, good biscuit (tender but dense and a bit flaky), tender chicken with good breading, pickled onions, pepper jelly. Somehow in the execution of combining these something was off – the chicken and biscuit were lukewarm at best. The chicken was crisp on the edges but soggy in the middle and could have used a sprinkle of sea salt. The pickles were great but the pepper jelly was overly sweet. A nice hot sauce (vinegar and heat) could have helped bring balance. Also – the bbq potato chips are definitely not needed on this. My friend got the catch of the day, snapper, which looked delicious and she seemed to enjoy. She seemed less thrilled by the Mac and cheese, which i didn’t taste but looked pastey. Overall, not a bad dinner by any means. I’d come back to try other items and as many mentioned this is on the pricey side, but will hope they improve the execution on the chicken and biscuit and level up on their cocktails.

Lewis Barbecue – Menu with Prices – 464 N Nassau St, Charleston

Will start this off by saying this is the best bbq we’ve ever had. (Minus from our smoker). We came in on a Thursday afternoon for a late lunch. The atmosphere is awesome. The entrance starts with the bar and then you walk through some doors to more of a restaurant style seating. Plenty of seating inside and it. The outside seating was actually very pretty with a big oak. Wasn’t crowded at all when we arrived but as soon as we grabbed a menu a huge lined formed. We grabbed a beer and my husband ordered. As there were 4 of us he ordered 2 racks of ribs with some corn bread pudding and Mac n cheese. I could taste the smoke from the ribs before I even got it to my mouth. I am not normally a fan of spare ribs, I prefer baby back, but these were incredible. Had plenty of tender, almost fall of the bone, meat on them. There was a spicy but not too spicy rub on them with some sauce. We ended up taking maybe 7 ribs home but that just means another awesome lunch. The corn bread was packed with the normal flavor of corn bread with some jalapeños and corn kernels in it. Very moist. I make a great smoked Mac so I’ve never found one in a bbq joint that I like until we came here! It’s the perfect texture of being able to eat it with a fork and it not fall. They used a white cheese with had a good bold flavor. There was also a little bit of crunch to the cheese. This place has been on my list but we never go in to Charleston so we waited and I’m sad we didn’t go sooner! Will definitely be back to try the brisket!
