It was so nice to enjoy a hot Sake and select my dishes from the rotating belt, just like we did in Japan. The food was top notch and the staff was very helpful in explaining the food and as an extra treat we ordered the Fire Paradise to share and it was exceptional. I would make it a point if you like good Japanese food you will enjoy this place. The last time I ate here I enjoyed the Vegetable Tempura and it was very good… This is one place that you should not miss when in Boise, you will enjoy the meal and the trip of something different in an eating experience. By the way, they make a dynamite Seaweed Salad!

Kyoto Sushi Bar & Hibachi Grill – Menu with Prices – 15525 Warwick Blvd, Newport News

Server was nice, I arrived at an early hour for lunch, seated and ordered cucumber salad, sashimi, vegetable tempura, and unsweetened tea. Ordered unsweetened tea but the tea came out to be sweet. I am not sure what I was expecting but I wanted hot brewed tea, I guess that was a little too much to ask and this is probably not a standard Japanese restaurant (which is not opened by Japanese people anyways… It was definitely too much to ask) Cucumber salad was terribly sweet and no flavor. It was just peeled cucumber with syrup and wasabi. The sashimi looked pretty good, very small portion for the price, but I guess it made sense since it was under the appetizer section. The worst was the tempura that I couldn’t even tell it was tempura. The batter was just egg and flour mix, it’s not fluffy at all and the taste was blend. Super disappointing meal overall, but it still deserved 2 stars for not bad service. But I got food poisoned that afternoon, the first time in my life got food poisoned from sashimi. Or maybe it was something else I don’t know. Felt terrible. Save your money somewhere else, Williamsburg is probably worth the drive for better sushi.

Meiga Sushi – Menu with Prices – 1379 E Highland Ave, San Bernardino

Had dinner in the middle of the week here at the recommendation of my son. The restaurant was very clean and organized. At first I thought the music was too loud but once we set down at our booth it was perfect. You could have a conversation at your table but not hear other table conversations. Husband ordered seaweed salad, suchimi and an ice tea. I ordered Bentos box with teriyaki chicken, beef, gozas, salad and tempura. Orders arrive very quickly and the waitress was very attentive. The restaurant even gave us a few shrimp tempura for free. Hubby loved his meal and said the fish was very fresh and flavorful. Seaweed salad was tangy and the dressing was tangy. I enjoyed everything except the beef teriyaki (reason for the 4 stars) the beef was tuff and had a lot of grissel, which was a bummer. But the goza, chicken, rice and salad was very good. Their ginger dressing was excellent and I ended up asking for more and poured it over my rice. We ended the meal with free ice cream. Plan to eat there again.

Kappo Sui Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 20070 Santa Ana Ave, Costa Mesa

This place has the best authentic Japanese food I’ve had in years. Years. It’s the kind of place a homesick Japanese person could visit and break down crying. For this reason it’s worth getting a reservation, and worth the extra pennies. The menu had many dishes I haven’t seen since I lived in Japan. I ordered komatsuna with atsuage, a spinach-like leafy vegetable with pre-fried tofu splashed with bonito broth seasoning and topped with finely cut nori. Just seeing it nestled in an assymetrical leaf-shaped dish made me happy. My spouse ordered eggplant simmered with duck. Both dishes were prepared carefully, and tasted just like what you’d get in Japan. Bonito, soy sauce, sugar, but not overpowering the flavors of the meats and vegetables. These are the kinds of dishes Japanese businesspeople might order with alcohol for an informal meeting. Our party also ordered a shrimp pancake served with tartar sauce, vegetable tempura, udon, and sushi. The tempura had a slightly heavier batter than what you might find at a tempura-ya in Japan, but lighter than most other Japanese restaurants in the US. They included authentic ingredients such as a green shiso leaf and fresh lotus root, old friends I don’t get to see often. The sushi was amazing. The fish, crab, etc. burst with flavor and melted like butter in my mouth. And the rice was perfectly cooked. It held together as either nigiri or maki, and even odd individual grains left in the soy sauce were delicious. (This is pretty rare.) This is a special place I would take a friend who really knows Japanese food, or who wants to learn about what people in Japan eat. If I make it back next time I’m in town, I’d love to order mozuku (seaweed), grilled mackerel, and other items on the menu.

Arigato Sushi – Menu with Prices – 11199-A, Lee Hwy, Fairfax

Came here on a Monday night at around 6:30. There were about about 2 tables when we arrived. We were greeted by the chefs (I couldn’t exactly tell what they said because it was in Japanese but I know it meant something along the lines of “welcome”) then the servers prompted us to our seats and took our order. We were given a complimentary small dish of edamame and fried cream cheese I think and our food came out pretty quick as well. We ordered age dashi tofu to start with along with a sushi&sashimi combo, salmon combo, and tempura udon as our meal. Everything tasted great especially the tempura udon. The broth was exceptional! However, I didn’t really like the spicy salmon hand roll. It wasn’t like the typical spicy mayo flavor, it was more of a korean red pepper paste flavor. After we were done eating, the servers quickly took our empty plates and gave us our checks. Nothing extraordinary but overall a fine experience.

Raku Ramen & Rolls – Menu with Prices – 2424 Midway Dr, Santa Rosa

My friend was very excited to try this place so we went Saturday night. We each had a bowl of the same named ramen, the Shoyu, but I ordered pork and she chose tofu. Then, I ordered the sashimi carpaccio salad, while she opted for the seaweed salad. She also added a dynamite roll. We noticed right off the bat that it was a bit strange to be charging such prices for a place that has you order at the counter. Don’t get me wrong, the customer service was pretty great, we had just been expecting a table service restaurant. We each received our ramen bowls first. We were both impressed by how pretty they looked. But then the pretty became a bit of a chore because we didn’t really have the tools to break the ingredients up into bite size/manageable pieces in order to be able to actually eat our food. We decided to use double forks to tear my pork pieces apart, and our hand to tear up the large piece of seaweed. Now, onto flavor. Ummm, we tried. We really, really tried. I’d have to say the most flavorful thing in my bowl was the egg. We each kept adding hot sauce and whatever seasoning it was on the table. All that did was made the broth taste like hot sauce. Alas, we were both left disappointed and wanting with our ramen. There was just no flavor at all. Just bland with some hot sauce. Boo. Okay, so salads. I love sashimi. Love it. So why would I order some rando sushi roll when I can get something different? This was SO CLOSE! Just a bit too drowned in the sauce, but solid effort. My friend started picking at her weird, Americanized, seaweed salad. Who makes a garden salad then adds a bit of seaweed to the top and has the nerve to call it a seaweed salad? Apparently this place. Next! She tried to share her dynamite roll with me but I was kind of over it by that point. I’m not sure if the crust it was fried in was panko? Whatever it was added a sweetness that just did not work. Okay, so here’s the deal. I know this. We should all know this from experience. When dining at any ethnic based restaurant, if you don’t see a single person of that ethnicity dining there, run for your life. Your tastebuds will thank you. I was blinded by excitement of seeing my friend and forgot to do the regular check up. But we both noticed when it was too late. Every single patron in this restaurant was nowhere near Asian. We should’ve known! 3 stars for the wonderful customer service and the almost great sashimi carpaccio.

Koshi Sushi & Bistro – Menu with Prices – 201 W 21st St suite 9, Norfolk

This restaurant has lived up to the hype. I ordered the miso soup with extra scallions and it was the best I’ve ever had. Plenty of seaweed. I was then served the seaweed salad. They put a lot of effort in their presentation. Next to the seaweed there were white crunchy noodles with a lemon slice and two crab sticks. The seaweed had a generous portion of sesame seeds on top. I devoured it. My third item was the citrus garlic steamed edamame. It was appetizing and interesting. My tuna carpaccio was soon brought to the table. Six pieces of fresh peppered tuna in ponzu sauce and sliced green apples on top sprinkled with scallions. Very fresh. My entree was the Spicy Ninja Scallop roll. Spicy tuna with shrimp tempura with avocado on top with a slices of seared scallops. It was then topped with eel sauce. I didn’t know sushi could be this good? For a beverage I had beer. A dry Japanese beer that I took a picture of and a Kirin. I enjoyed the Kirin the most. I strongly suggest checking out this bistro! I asked when the fish comes in and they remarked three times a week. You can walk in and not smell anything.

Wasabi Factory – Menu with Prices – 7415 Hardeson Rd #A, Everett

I used to frequent Wasabi factory when I was living at home a few years ago. Now I wanted to go back and try it again as it’s been a while. I remembered liking their Lion King and Volcano roll and I was craving sushi that was flame seared. I went to the place on a Friday night. It wasn’t full or packed, probably a few people at the bar and another party of 2. Their menu changed a little bit but I was craving a volcano roll and a bento box. I think they are known for their boxes as they are relatively cheap compared to other Japanese restaurants and comes with a lot of food. They have a deluxe and a regular bento box, depending on how much sushi you want and if you want a side of gyoza. I ordered the regular bento box with spicy tuna roll (comes with 8 rolls) and chicken katsu. They have other options you can order with it such as teriyaki, pork katsu, sushi, tempura; etc. On top of picking two things, you get miso soup, salad, and 4 pieces of California roll. I also got a volcano roll to share, which is a California roll seared with spicy tuna on the top. From what I could remember a few years ago, the roll was similar. I enjoyed eating the sushi as it leaves a little bit of a burnt taste. I recommend this along with Lion King if you want seared salmon, and the katana roll which is a shrimp tempura roll wrapped with tempura. The karagee was also ordered to share – it wasn’t super great as it wasn’t as crispy. Staff was friendly and food overall was great. Bento box was great for its value and I left full and content. Will be returning next time I’m in town.

Pesto’s Pizza Shop Menu with Prices 5026, 7802 W Goddard Rd, Boise

I won’t make this a long one. Whenever I say that, it ends up being a novel, lol. I’m HUGE on finding great pizza spots in Boise because being from NY…Pizza is just in our blood, haha! And finding good pizza places outside anywhere in NY…is tough. And hello, Boise lol. So I’ve heard about how “amaaaazzziiiiiiing” this place is. That was definitely stretching the truth a bit. Is it good? Of course it is. Is it Boise’s best tho? Hell nah! Drive your ass over to NY Giant Pizza on Overland….THAT’S where you’ll find Boise’s LEGIT….BEST. PIZZA. Pesto’s is good tho and it’s a drive through pizza place. Kinda odd..especially if you’re alone, starving, but can’t eat a slice of pizza because ya know….you have to drive and all lol. Hell, we ordered and sat in the parking lot and that shit was still hard to eat and enjoy, haha! The concept is cool tho. I mean, I’m not sure what else to say. It’s decent pizza and if you’ve never been outside Idaho and Pesto’s is “the best pizza you’ve ever had” then, I feel sorry for ya’s because you’re missing out, hahaha! I’d put this place in like 4th or 5th best pizza in Boise…maybe 6th or 7th hahaha! Most who have tried it, love it. But I’m super picky with pizza because I know what good pizza tastes like. Anyway, give it a try ? You’ll enjoy it, but you’ll see what I mean ? Thanks every Yelperedtudes!! Cheers!

Ichiban Sushi – Menu with Prices – 4401 NW 25 Pl, Gainesville

First, very, very, limited selection of fresh fish. The only real fish there was yellowtail, salmon, tuna, and a mysterious fish. I asked them what it was they said â??itâ??s white fishâ? uh, OK Iâ??ll pass on that one. Got the usual three.Salad w/ shaved carrot on top. Not the ginger dressing one expects, maybe they just poured corn syrup on top? So I sent it back and they brought seaweed salad instead… same corn syrup â??dressingâ? I didnâ??t taste any soy sauce or sesame oil, and missed the sesame seeds sprinkled on top. It was so sweet I couldnâ??t get seaweed flavor out of it, just that texture in my mouth. Finally comes my tempura. Two points: tempura sauce soooo miserably sweet it lacks any other point of flavor. I added 1/3 a bottle of soy sauce to try to save it but it was still so sweet. So I just decided to give up on that and just dipped it in pure Soy Sauce. I would recommend to the chef to change the fry oil. It tasted like old French fry oil and smelled like it to. So I couldnâ??t taste the shrimp. There was a pool of oil under the The tempura. So, I would recommend draining well in the basket and then tossing the tempura on paper towels to soak up the oil before sending the dish out to your guests. My bill was $30 (and I chose the Lunch Special.)

JL Japanese Express – Menu with Prices – 5555 Whittlesey Blvd L4, Columbus

I was feeling as though I was getting sick, and I wanted some healthy food like sushi, a poke bowl, miso soup, or Ramen to get my immune system back in check. I happened to be staying about a half mile away from Japanese Express. It’s exactly what I wanted: Japanese food and to-go. I walked in on a Friday night and it was completely dead. I was greeted by a young woman who tried helping me navigate through the menu. I asked if they had poke bowls, and she said she had no idea what that was. One of the Japanese woman from the restaurant came over and also didn’t know what I was talking about. That was a first. So I figured, no poke for me. I knew I wanted miso soup & seaweed salad. I also chose the salmon hibachi and asked for extra ginger. They said it would take about 20 minutes. I had errands to run and went back in a half hour. My food was ready for me. There are plenty of parking spots in the lot. The prices are very fair. Everything I ordered was under $20. Which isn’t bad especially considering I got a huge piece of salmon in my hibachi meal. I got back to my hotel room and opened up the food, and it was barely the right order. It was pretty much a completely different order aside from the salmon. I had asked for a seaweed salad, that never came. No extra ginger. So I basically got a piece of salmon and miso soup. It was OK, but it seemed to be cooked in an unhealthy way considering it all tasted fried in greasy oils. I would not recommend going here, try another Japanese restaurant close by.

Sakana Japanese Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 2026 P St NW, Washington

I went to Sakana for a business lunch. The person I went with was a Sakana loyalist. He’d been going to the restaurant for some 20 odd years. I was excited to go because I was dying for sushi and to get a nice change of pace from some of the other restaurants near my office. When I got to the restaurant, from the outside it seemed like a hole in the wall type of place. I don’t know if I would have noticed it was a restaurant if I was casually walking the street. When I went inside, it was quiet and very neat. I kept my order simple, which is probably why I’m going a 3 star rating. I simply ordered edamame and the Sakana Tempura Sushi roll (shrimp tempura, avocado, and fish eggs). I did share a seaweed salad and vegetables. Everything was good – not amazing, best sushi I ever had, but it hit the spot. The service was great. However, I do think it was because I was with a loyal customer. When I observed a few other tables of people who wandered in for lunch, they didn’t seem to be getting the same type of attention. Overall though, Sakana was good. I do plan to go back and try a bento box. The person I was with ordered one and it was huge. He said it’s his go to menu item. So I’ll be back eventually.

Tokyo Shokudo – Menu with Prices – 3631 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Duluth

Came here alone on a Monday evening as I’ve been trying many new Japanese restaurants around my area I haven’t been to. I honestly would have never known about this place if I never searched up “Japanese restaurants near me” into a google search. It just goes to show how much of a hidden gem this place is. It’s located in a small strip right next to a Jimmy John’s and it’s easily missed as the sign and restaurant are both very small. As soon as I walked in, the waitress and chef both instantly greeted me and it honestly felt like I had just walked into their home with the warm vibe they and their restaurant gave off. The waitress was very sweet and attentive, seating me very quickly and letting me know all the menu combinations available. I was very hungry so I skipped straight to their dinner options with the bento boxes standing out the most. I ended up going with a grilled salmon bento box which included rice, a salad, miso soup, sashimi, assorted tempura, and 3 pieces of sushi all for $22! The wait time for my food was small, granted I was the only one inside at the moment, but the waitress always made sure to deliver my food as quickly as possible whenever the bell rang. I honestly can’t stress how nice the service here was, I have never had a waitress be so sweet and attentive before and the chef was always eager to hear my opinion of the meal. The tempura was all very good, with the shrimp tempura being one of the best I’ve had. The grilled salmon was the highlight of my meal as the texture was still nice and soft. I’ve had it at other places where it’s sometimes a little too crunchy and leaves a small burnt aftertaste. I just wish it was bigger portion since it only comes as one small piece but I guess that’s fine considering all the other food that was included. The sushi was good too, it wasn’t anything out of this world but I still enjoyed every bite nonetheless. I’m really glad I came here as I’ve never experienced this type of warm home vibe the restaurant gave me. The service was impeccable and only complimented the delicious meal I enjoyed here. Definitely a hidden gem that everyone around the area should try.
