Finally! A true 3rd wave coffee standard in Bakersfield! Located in the downtown area, this small cafe front packs a great punch of various types of coffee beans from around the world. Stepping into the cafe, is an intimate place with some chairs and tables plus 2 places where a smaller group of 4 can sit in a living room type atmosphere with arm chairs, love seat and coffee table. It’s clean, modern, and speaks of Bakersfield’s culture. with After years of drinking second wave coffee (ie. Starbucks, etc.), there have been a couple of 3rd wave coffee roasters and cafe that have come to the scene, which I am excited about. While I travel the world, I intentionally go out of my way to hit the best coffee spots in different cities, including the most awarded coffee roaster in the US. I chemex with my own scale, burr grinder, and pour with my bona vita kettle set at 205 degrees. With saying that, Rig City does not disappoint. In fact, in my opinion, they are hands down the best roasters and serve the best coffee in town. (Please do not destroy your coffee with cream and sugar) I am totally impressed with the staff. All very friendly, and they know what they are doing. They know how to set the right ground levels along with the pull the coffee with their light, medium roast coffees. I recommend their Ethiopian or their Honduran Chichen. Here are my recommendations for the pour over that I really enjoy: – Ethiopian: grind level 12, pull at 4.5 – Honduran: grind level 12, pull at 4 (They will also grind the coffee and pull of you have your own preference) Other drinks that I have tried: – Cold Brew – excellent – Pineapple Matcha – good – Latte – excellent – Espresso – amazing They have various hot and cold teas also. I have not tried their pastries but they have a nice assortment and they always look fresh. This is my new go to spot for coffee and meetings. Here is my overall scorecard for this place: Atmosphere: 4.5 stars Service: 5 stars Coffee: 4.5 stars Overall: I give this a solid 4.5 but I will proudly score it a 5! The only suggestion I would have for this place is futile but I’ll post it anyways: 1. The place smells more like food than a coffee roaster due to the door to the business next door being opened. Again, this is just something I noticed. 2. They use the v-60… I personally wish they used a chemex, which I feel pulls better, but, again most people probably don’t even know the difference. Thanks Rig City!!!! You all rock!!!!

Jittery Joe’s Coffee Menu with Prices 425 Barber St, Athens

Excellent cold brew beans. They will grind them for you at the correct size for cold brew also if you ask. I tried the samples of their medium and dark roast which ere also good, but the cold brew was my favorite. Freshly roasted beans make a huge difference. miles above anything you can buy in the local supermarkets. I have not tried the other local Roaster, 1000 faces yet so I can;t compare, but so far this place has the best tasting beans I have bought in GA. Staff was also very helpful and knowledgeable, and gave me free samples of everything I wanted to try that was available. Even walked out with a cup of cold brew on the house since I bought a can. This is not a coffee house though, its a roaster that just happens to serve some coffee on location, so don’t come here for a nice quiet place to study or anything like that. at least not this location.

L’Or en Grain – Boutique de Café – Menu with Prices – 751 Rue Rachel E, Montréal

Hands down probably the best coffee I’ve ever heard. A very cute independent coffee shop that has the best beans from South America and Canada and other places. They have a dedicated area for Canadian coffee and it’s labelled from which city it’s from. They have all kinds of tools, machines and coffee makers available at your disposal. I walked around to see what they were specific to. There’s beautiful posters and paintings decorated. Unfortunately they have 2 very very small tables in such a spacious cafe. You can sit on the high chairs at the register. However, it would be nice if they incorporated more sitting space available. The barista explained the different coffees available and why they are different. Upon his recommendation I ordered the chocolate pour-over. It was excellent! Very strong coffee, to the point I was up way past midnight! I added milk, no sugar and it was perfect. I tried my friends fruit coffee pour over and I didn’t like it, nor did they. I finished my fairly large mug, whereas they couldn’t. It was nice to watch the process of the coffee being made. Really enjoyed it. Again, not enough chairs to sit and enjoy the coffee which is primarily why it loses a star.

Magpie Coffee Roasters – Menu with Prices – 1715 S Wells Ave, Reno

I’ve had this bookmarked for as long as I can remember! I finally was able to check this place out during a weekend getaway to the Biggest Little City in the World – R E N O !!! Reno may be the ‘boring’ and ‘old-school’ sibling, compared to Las Vegas – but it has a small town feel with a vibrant coffee scene that Sin City doesn’t seem to have, yet. Located in an airy barn at the southern end of S. Wells Avenue, which is part of the Mid-town district of Reno, Magpie Coffee Roasters is a wonderful coffee spot that feels miles away from the neon glitz and old-school style casinos that are literally just a few blocks up. The Wells Avenue neighborhood is a historically important area for Reno. It was originally one of the main access roads to U.S. Highway 40, which was the main artery across the United States before I-80. Founder Matthew Sewell wanted to bring some of that third wave coffee goodness that has already gripped much of the country to Northern Nevada & offer locals (hence, Reno-ites), a place where they could enjoy excellent espresso-based beverages, single origin pour-overs, and where they could also buy locally roasted beans for their homes. The space itselt is kept very industrial – with lots of concrete, wood, and metal. The small roaster is located in the back of the bar & used a few times per week when Matthew roasts coffees for in-house and external client use. I had their Cold Brew with light iced for $4 – reasonably priced & that first sip of my drink felt so incredibly refreshing, that I had to order a second one for my buddy, who changed his mind from ordering a hot drink – to wanting the same Cold Brew that I had. Many people drink coffee for their caffeine fix, but then there are those who want good flavor to go with it. That’s what Magpie Coffee Roasters is all about; creating a high quality product that you can taste with each sip. Reno may not be your usual holiday destination away from gambling and Burning Man, but it is also the gate to beautiful Lake Tahoe – so if you do find yourself in this compact city, swing by Magpie Coffee Roasters for a delicious cuppa Joe! Highly recommended, it’s #shiftlocal & easy to snag street parking spots!

Dark Moon Coffee Roasters – Menu with Prices – 11041 S Eastern Ave #115, Henderson

Order: Pour Over Price: $6.50 Positives: One of the best pour overs I’ve ever had, the baristas are INCREDIBLY knowledgeable and happy to share the process with you Negatives: Still really wish I could get an iced pour over out here but it doesn’t detract from the amazingness that is Dark Moon tldr: Dark Moon is an incredible coffee shop and the best we visited in the larger Vegas area. Their beans are impeccably roasted, their staff is insanely knowledgeable and more than willing to help, they have a variety of very unique drinks, and their seating is fantastic for working. Short of not making iced pour overs I think Dark Moon is practically perfect. Thoughts: Still day 2 (though we came back on day 3 twice), and stop number 8 on our coffee, food, and desert tour. Dark Moon was our post lunch coffee stop and blew us away. We’d already been to several great coffee shops but Dark Moon took it to a whole new level. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable, walking us through the process and tasting notes for several of the beans, explaining their favorites and why they were their favorites. Later, while we were sitting and getting some work done, we even overhead one of the barista’s walking a group of people through their entire process of brewing a pour over as he did it. I’ve never seen that done at a cafe before, and it didn’t seem like it was a chore for him at all. The staff of Dark Moon seem to genuinely love coffee and want all their customers to love it too (I’m on team love coffee if it isn’t obvious). While on this trip we only tried a pour over, during the course of our visits we had an espresso and tonic, two other pour overs, this insane smoked blueberry magical potion drink, and a cappuccino. The only one that wasn’t some the best coffee I’d ever had was the cappuccino, the espresso was a little dark for my tasted and didn’t have a depth of flavor that I’ve had in some other places. Everything is was ridiculously good, the pour overs all had their own unique, complex flavors, you knew that you were drinking a different cup of coffee each time. The espresso and tonic was a drink I had never tried before and is now one of my new favorites. It’s a crazy mix of tangy bitterness from the tonic and punch from the espresso. It’s honestly a bit hard to describe but it’s an amazing drink that I would highly recommend you try, unless you just don’t like tonic water. The blueberry drink thing was more alchemy that coffee I think. It involved smoking a glass, mint, blueberries, espresso (duh), and some other things I think? While it would never really replace my go to coffee it was an incredibly unique coffee experience. Honestly I think you can really only get this level of greatness at a coffee shop with an intense level of care and commitment to your craft, and Dark Moon drips care and commitment. You feel it when you walk in and talk to the staff, and you taste it in every sip of coffee. Dark Moon isn’t just the best cafe and roaster I visited in Vegas, it’s one of the best coffee shops I have every been to, and I’ve been to a lot. Anyone that can get to Dark Moon should, even if you don’t like coffee, if given the chance they might just change your mind. Dark Moon, you are truly masters of your craft and I applaud your commitment to excellence and care….at least I would if I wasn’t clutching a cup of your delicious coffee.

Ludwig Coffee® – Menu with Prices – 147 Front St, Brooklyn

Varietals I have never experienced before ! Learning my way around the specialty coffee world with Ludwig Coffee at City Acres in Green Point, Brooklyn was eye opening, the sales guy was very nice and kind enough to explain the differences between Arabica and Robusta. The tasting of Ludwig’s cold brew coffee options was phenomenal, I highly recommend the Nicaraguan Catuaí varietal, Tea like qualities and subtleties that are perfect for those who have not yet ventured into the world of fancy cold brew coffee. SUPER SMOOTH.

Boxcar Social – Menu with Prices – 1208 Yonge St, Toronto

Aesthetic shop with thought given to every little detail. Coffee selection: Nice selection of roasted coffee from both Canada and the US. Surprised to find that they were offering prices which were competitive with the roaster’s own pricing. They had various coffees from Luna, Seth Taylor CBD, and SEY in stock. Pour-over: Conducted on a GINA as immersion. Had an Ecuadorian one from SEY and then an Ethiopian one from Luna. Served in a cute carafe from Hario and pretty handmade mugs. Espresso: I think I had the Ecuadorian coffee from SEY. Was surprised to see them serving quality sparkling water with the espresso. Andrew made my drinks and I got the impression from my brief conversation with him that he’s quite knowledgable about coffee. He was well acquainted with roasters from both the US and Canada; and was even familiar with a small roaster in Toronto that I really like. It was funny to see that he brought several of his own bags of coffee to work.

Thou Mayest Coffee Roasters – Menu with Prices – 412 Delaware St, Kansas City

I’ve been to Thou Mayest three different times now, and it’s become my favorite coffee shop in the Kansas City area . There are a few different things I like about it, which I’ll go into more detail about below, but basically, the combination of great coffee beans, expertly crafted coffee/espresso drinks, good food, great service/baristas, and a cool setting all make it a wonderful coffee roastery. Here’s some deets: The beans/drinks: I usually get a pour-over here, and they have a TON of options to choose from. Their beans are all really well roasted, from the fruitier varieties to more nutty/chocolaty ones, and the pour-overs always taste fresh and expertly brewed. Their more “foo-foo” coffee drinks are also really well done too, and they even have quite a few that don’t use any milk or dairy. The food: They have a huge selection of pastries, some of which are vegan/dairy-free. They also offer about 15 different cereals (with lots of dairy-free milk options), which is a super fun treat if you don’t usually eat that kind of thing at home. The cereal/coffee combo is a great deal! The baristas/staff: really friendly, very detail-oriented, and super fast. I always love chatting with them when I come in, and appreciate how they treat each drink like they are making it for themselves. The shop: a fun, comfy, super hipster (yet functional) inside with lots of seating and a few “singles” counters (you can even sit and watch them make other drinks while you have yours), and a lush, almost tropical (well, as tropical as you can get in KC) patio out back. Overall, a great place to get some work done or chat with friends. All in all, I love this little “Crossroads” coffee roaster and cafe, and I definitely look forward to coming here every time I am in KC!

Klatch Coffee Ontario – Menu with Prices – 951 N Haven Ave, Ontario

The best Coffee in the IE, and possible in all of So Cal. They’ve been in the business for decades, and have unique relationships with their farms and farmers, so they have access to exclusive beans. Not only that, but they roast locally in Rancho Cucamonga so their coffee is always fresh. I love to get my whole beans here for roasting at home (using a Chemex, V60, or Toddy), but when I come into the store I love to grab an espresso based drink (Latte, Cappuccino etc) because their espresso is world class (literally nationally award winning). Their cold brew uses a blend called Crazy Goat that has notes of cocao and tobacco. It’s incredible. Best to drink it black (it’s sweet enough with just the notes). During the summer we purchase a growler from them and they refill it for $16 with their cold brew and it’s good for about 6-8 glasses. This particular location has limited indoor seating but ample outdoor seating. Always nice and clean with great WiFi. But let’s be honest, you come to Klatch because their coffee is perfect. Don’t mess around with the seasonal drinks or fancy stuff. Just get their coffee, sit and enjoy!

Indah Coffee – Menu with Prices – 1332 Main St, Columbia

I thoroughly enjoy coffee. But I don’t always understand the verbiage as to what describes a blend or concept. I walked in today and was greeted by Nick. Nick took the time to explain the differences between his coffee varieties and why I should try a pour over (he even gave me a sample). I started with the pour over that just filled the room with an awesome aroma. Nick noticed the coffee was hot and my hesitance to immediately indulge, so he made for some great small talk of the great places the area had to offer. The pour over was wonderful and I left with a second cup of cold brew (which was delightful as well). You can tell this place will be around for a while because nick is so well connected with the community. I’ll surely be back to Nick’s welcoming coffee shop.

Rockford Roasting Company – Menu with Prices – 206 N Main St, Rockford

Another update. SHORT VERSION: IF you are a coffee/espresso connoisseur THEN skip this place as it is hit or miss (see long version) and very poor customer service compared to similar priced Chicago and national coffee roasters (0.5 stars). IF you like Starbucks THEN go to this place as you are supporting local business and quality is far better than Starbucks (3 stars). IF you ever start to home brew then skip this place (see long version). Background: I have been going to RRC since the third day it opened. I do not go there often as I home brew. I know most of the original staff by name. I home brew coffee and espresso on prosumer level machine using commercial grinders since 2009. I frequent coffee get-togethers in Chicago attended by former SCAA executive and professional coffee cuppers and home roasters who use commercial roasters (and roast as well as any pro roaster). I have bought espresso and coffee from generally regarded as great in Chicago (e.g. Wormhole, Ipsento, Intelligentia Broadway, Dark Matter Mothership) and SanFrancisco (e.g. Linea Caffe, Blue Bottle of the early 2010’s). And I only purchase beans from well-regarded roasters [e.g. Intelligentsia (IL), Paradise Roasters (MN), Klatch Coffee (CA), Counter Culture Coffee (NC), George Howell (MA)]. LONG VERSION: I went to RRC again to get some freshly roasted bean. I asked the barista/cashier for something that would go well a cappuccino and is NOT fruity (not typical Third Wave Coffee;a coffee industry term) for my home espresso setup. I was recommended Symbol blend and I told the barista/cashier I had that before and it is not what I was looking for. She then recommended the Costa Rica Rivense (that I had already picked out myself and in hand). The label stated roasted 1/14/2019 and “chocolate, walnut, rustic.” I purchased this Rivense bag 255 grams/9oz on 1/16/2019. At home I brewed it as espresso which I always do before I prepare it adulterated with milk for spouse’s cappuccino (I only drink straight espresso). With four different brews the straight espresso tasted nothing like the label description nor what cashier/barista told (a) two brews on E61 semiautomatic pump 9bar: each time 54% brew ratio, one time grouphead temp 198F and 2nd time 208F and done on commerial 64mm flat burr grinder). (b) two brews of completely manual lever: each brew ratio 50% as I am running the shot long looking to get some bitter, very fine grind on 68mm commercial conical burr grinder, one time grouphead temp 195 and 2nd time 205F, 15 second preinfusion, 16 bar peak. All times (including the higher temp extractions and very high brew pressure) the overwhelming tastes bright fruity, tart lemon and not one iota of “chocolate, walnut, rustic” as described on the label and by the initial cashier/barista. This confirmed with my teenager daughter (who is developing her old man’s palate). I went today (7 days post purchase) with remainder of the roasted whole bean (56% of bean left;I weigh each extraction and weighed again before I replaced into original bag that had my tasting notes and brew parameters written in black fine sharpie on it). Today I told (a different cashier/barista (Ricki) of my concern. Of note the male co-owner [Benjamin and if not him then his doppleganger:) ] was sitting within four feet of Ricki and I. I told her my concern and my resolution would be replacement Rivense or I would exchange and pay difference for the more expensive Columbian SRA Marcela (that I reviewed a week ago and spouse liked as drip). I was told by Ricki that I will have to buy new bag full price no credit whichever I chose and that bag I brought (with original dates store receipt) is nearly empty. She did not look inside bag nor pick it up. As states above the bag contained 56% of the original roasted bean; my scale is reportedly accurate to 0.01gram. I told this is first time I have ever been told this by roaster and/or cafe that I have done business with. Every roaster may have defect or w

Egyptian mug – Menu with Prices – 4401 NE 138th Ave, Portland

We are really excited to try their Turkish coffee! Here’s a post from Cody B… “Great cup of coffee from very kind staff. Will stop in again whenever in the area! Coffee tasted like it was select beans from a gourmet roaster. Drive through still with a surprisingly large menu. 5 stars”

Flying Rhino Coffee – Menu with Prices – 201 Morris St Suite G, Toledo

This is probably one of the best spots in Toledo to get coffee. My boyfriend loved the espresso that he had (he raved about it the entire day) and I thoroughly enjoyed my Japanese-style iced coffee, which was light and smooth. In addition to the great coffee, the space is cute– love that the roaster is on display and the plant shelving. Think: rustic but hip. The new owner, Angie, has done a great job at taking Flying Rhino to the next level.
