From the moment we arrived in the LA area, everyone has told us we need to go to Portos – and now we have! I would say our experience hovered between 3 and 4 stars: a pretty good meal with some standout items, excellent overall value, and some things that were a bit confusing or could be improved. Parking can be simple or challenging. Once we parked out front (pay the meter), but the second time we had to park several blocks away (also at the meter). Glendale has a lot of meters that are coin only (no credit card or app) so plan ahead! There is also a parking lot or garage, but it’s a bit confusing because it’s not directly connected to the restaurant and we didn’t end up needing it as we found a spot on the street. The restaurant is also a bit overwhelming the first time, because there are two separate sections with separate lines, registers, and seating but it’s unclear (at least to a newbie) what the difference is between them. It almost feels like there are two Portos in the same building. Be prepared for long lines at lunch – and competition for seating. There are a lot of tables and chairs, but it’s so popular that they must fill up quickly. And, because of the angle of the sun, it can be difficult to get a spot in the shade if you’re outside during lunch. The food was good overall, but in my case it suffered from over-hype. The potato balls were the real star of the show – easily 5 stars! It is hard to describe, but it tastes almost like a beef stew inside a tater tot, and it’s amazing, even if (like me), you are not a fan of beef stew nor tater tots. I’d come back just for these! My husband’s Cuban sandwich was tasty, but average compared to others he’s had. My Citrus Chicken Plate was pretty good. The seasoning and sauce were the best part and tasted gourmet! However the chicken itself was of average quality. It was very flat and a bit rubbery, and reminded me of bulk frozen chicken breasts from Costco. The black beans and rice were adequate; the rice was moist and fresh, and the beans were okay, but a bit lukewarm and flat. As a black bean fan, I was hoping for something more flavorful. On the other hand, the plantains were outstanding, hot, and truly delicious. We rounded out the meal with a caramel flan. Don’t let the small size fool you! It is extremely rich (and frankly a little too sweet for me at the end) and thus perfect for sharing. The service and atmosphere were okay. One time, after the lunch rush, it was moderately loud, but when I came during lunch at noon the indoor volume was deafening. There were a lot of people talking loudly with each other and on their phones and quite a few children were screaming. It felt more like a food court in a mall on the weekend than what I was expecting. While this isn’t necessarily a problem, if you want a quiet escape from the world during lunch, this may not be the place to find it. As for service: I can first of all compliment them on their ability to manage their crowds (the line and process were clear), and to keep things moving (I did not wait nearly as long as I thought I might). I also appreciated that the people who took my order, brought my plate, and cleared the table after I finished eating were all friendly and polite. However, one strange thing was that when I placed my order “for here,” I was presented with the flan on a plate and the potato ball in a large paper bag, before being asked again if this was for here or to go. It’s not a huge deal, but it seemed odd that they gave me part of my meal as if it was for here and the other as if it was to go . . . why not just give me a plate with both, or serve the potato ball on the plate with my meal? It seemed like a waste of a bag to carry a tiny part of my meal to the table, just to throw the bag away immediately after. (It was also a bit awkward to juggle a plate, a bag, and a number, especially as the bag had some kind of sauce on the side and it got all over my hand . . .)

The BBQ Place – Menu with Prices – 2365 Powder Springs Rd SW Suite 1101, Marietta

Went on a Wednesday night and found the parking was easy and plentiful. The store is nicely decorated and features a separate bar area. As I walked in, I proceeded to the very nice counter and was greeted warmly by the young lady on the register. My order was taken smoothly and paid for via credit card. Food came out fairly quickly and was bagged and out he door in no time. Pro’s: attractive dining room with outdoor seating with an outdoor fireplace. A separate bar. Taco Tuesday’s. Great customer service. Plentiful parking. Braves game on the tv. Very trendy and clean inside. I had 2 pulled pork sandwiches with potato salad and Brunswick stew. The pork sandwiches were very good with 6 ozs of meat on each bun. Cons: Brunswick stew was really salty and almost inedible. Brunswick stew tends to be very personal to every body in the BBQ world… this is not my favorite version of stew. The sweet tea was not very sweet. I was asked if I wanted ice in my tea????Lol. It is the south and to quote Jeff Foxworthy: It is Sweetea…all 1 word. It always Iced and always sweet. Lol. And the potato salad was a pretty plain middle of the road version. And the BBQ sauces were unlike anything I have ever had. The spicy had some heat, which as a chili head was good. But it also had an odd almost Caribbean flavor to it. I am a bbq junkie who has literally been to Memphis in May just for a vacation. I have more than 8 or 9 different bbq sauces at home right now. Even my Hawaiian style Huli Huli sauce does not come close to what they serve. I would go back but would order different sides.

Local Boys Cafe Inc – Menu with Prices – 1803 Democrat St # 2, Honolulu

A BIG MAHALO to my bruddah from annoddah moddah – Bruddah Ric C!!! UDAMAN! Mahalo for da tip on this place. Ric C & I have a lot in common……….we both roamed the same streets in Kaimuki while growing up, and we also went to the same schools! How’s that? After bruddah Ric posted his review of Local Boys Cafe, I quickly booked marked it………and I actually tried to come here to eat like two other times, only to fail because I wasn’t lucky enough to find any parking. When it was lunch time today…………….I originally was gonna take my coworkers to a place by the airport area (as we were working by the airport today), but my coworkers wasn’t diggin’ the place I had chose, so I decided to go with plan “B” and take them to the Kalihi neighborhood to see if I could eat at – Local Boys Cafe. Today was my lucky day, because when I got on Democrat Street…………somebody actually pulled out of a street parking space, so I quickly maneuvered my company vehicle into the spot, then headed over to Local Boys Cafe. Local Boys Cafe is a little hole in the wall diner in Kalihi……..they only have like four booths in the little cafe. Most of the people who come to the cafe are usually doing the “grab & go” thing, as the cafe is located in an industrial area of town. There is absolutely NO PARKING at all, so all parking must be found on the street……….. Of course if you work in the Kalihi industrial area, it’s probably convenient for them to drop by and do the “grab & go” thing. When we walked into the cafe today, we were lucky enough to secure a booth, but I gotta tell you folks…………..the cafe was SUPER HOT inside (as in temperature hot) so eating inside can be a wee bit uncomfortable. No A/C at all………just a fan blowing hot air, and if you’re not facing the fan……….then you’re just out of luck my friend. Upon scanning the wall menu, I picked the Beef Stew & Lau Lau plate with toss salad. My two coworkers picked the following – Beef Stew Plate, & .my other coworker picked the Western BBQ Chicken plate. What can I say about the food…………….simply DELICIOUS! I loved my Lau Lau as it was very meaty with minimum fat. Good taste to the Lau Lau, and not too salty either. I’ve also been looking for a good Beef Stew after my beloved HK Restaurant had closed a few years ago, and I gotta tell you folks………this beef stew was pretty darned good over here! The beef stew was more on the tomato based side (not the brown beef stew type) but it sure was tasty! TIP – This place is CASH ONLY! No money, no honey……get my drift! If ever I get lucky again with finding parking……….I’ll be sure to stop by again. Check ’em out gang if you’re in da Kalihi neighborhood.

Noble House Hawaiian Foods – Menu with Prices – 3238 E Douglas Ave, Wichita

Delicious Hawaiian plate lunches at very reasonable prices. Truly a Wichita gem! This restaurant is located in the booming Uptown area and walking distance to a bunch of cute shops and dessert places. My favorite items to order from here are the huli huli chicken plate lunch and the beef loco moco plate lunch, as well as the ahi tuna poke. The huli huli chicken is always perfectly grilled, maintaining the right amount of juiciness without being too dry. For those who have never tried it, I would describe it as baring a lot of similarities to teriyaki chicken, without being too sweet and full of glaze. The macaroni salad that comes with the plate lunch is pretty average and does not offer anything to make it unique, however, it is still well executed and delicious. If you choose to go for the poke, be aware that it is served the traditional Hawaiian style– delectable cubes of beautiful, fresh fish tossed with white and green onions in their special house sauce and served over rice. Don’t expect the extra toppings such as seaweed, avocados, cucumbers, edamame, or whatever else you would hope to find at the average poke joint. If you have yet to try poke the traditional way, this is not a bad place to start as the fish is always fresh and you can truly appreciate it without the distraction from the other added toppings. Besides the delicious food, my other favorite things about this restaurant are the extremely reasonable prices (plate lunches are also offered in a mini size for those with a smaller appetite or are looking for a snack) and the speedy service. I look forward to coming here every time that I am in town!

Tempe House Spicy Food – Menu with Prices – 24984 3rd St, San Bernardino

I finally got to try this place after hearing about it for a few years now and reading all the good reviews. It’s not located in the best neighborhood but it’s not bad either. As far as the food, I ordered a plate of 3 item for to go. I had coconut rice, rendang (beef stew), ayam rica (spicy chicken), and ayam woku (another spicy chicken). I have to be honest, I was excited when I got in the car and the hubby and MIL complimented on how good it smell. So I had to take a bite even though I was so full from lunch we just had half hour before. The coconut rice was pretty weak, there was a hint of coconut but that’s just it a hint. Then I took a bite of the rendang expecting an explosion of flavor (if you had rendang at a Padang restaurant or any good Indonesian restaurant then you’d know what I mean), instead I was thoroughly disappointed. It was sweet and tasted like regular beef stew, no rich coconut flavor or the other spices. After the disappointment of the the rice and the rendang, I reluctantly took a bite of the ayam woku knowing it probably won’t make my tongue dance around from the spicy chili. I was right, the chicken was salty and I couldn’t taste the lemongrass or the basil. Being Manadonesse I expected the chicken to be spicy, but it wasn’t. The best part of the whole meal was the sambal (chili) that came in a little container. In general the food wasn’t bad but not up to my expectation. They do give you a generous portion for what you pay for. If you’re craving some Indonesian food and not really picky about the flavor than this should do. Customer service was good, the ladies were friendly and polite, and the place was clean. I will give them another try.

Pho Cuu Long Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 757 St Mary’s Rd, Winnipeg

*looks at the other review* Okay… Anyway, I ate here recently and enjoyed it. One of my mom’s friends recently dined here and highly recommended the beef stew noodle soup, so that was what I went with. Their beef stew noodle soup is pretty unique. Instead of a rice noodle or egg noodle option, they put both in the soup. It was definitely an interesting take, and the taste was really good too. The broth in particular was excellent, one of the best beef stew broths I’ve ever had. The ambience is quite modern and somewhat screams Northern Chinese restaurant more than a Vietnamese restaurant. The outside doesn’t look anything special though aside from the nine dragons symbol (Cuu Long loosely translates to Kowloon, a region in Hong Kong). Service? Yeah they’re a little scramble-y…but with these establishments I never expect much for service. Definitely will return.

Just Jeff’s Street Food – Menu with Prices – 701 Business Loop 70 W, Columbia

Their hotdogs are good. I would return for the hotdogs and tater tots. Their food is very salty though and they do not provide complimentary water. Things to avoid: Their hamburgers are pretty dry. I think they press the burger patty flat which makes it dry and kinda crispy. It’s a weird texture for a burger Their chili sauce, we got it on the tater tots…it was runny and flavorless The nacho cheese…we also got this on the tater tots and it really just tasted like canned cheese Wait can be pretty long to get your food. Seating is only outdoors so they are probably carryout only when the weather gets colder.

Coney Island Joe’s – Menu with Prices – 6401 Sheridan St, Hollywood

So I feel like eating hot dogs for lunch and decide to let yelp help me out with my search. Quickly, Coney Island Joe’s pops up with a 5 star rating, My fellow yelpers seem to be OMG about this place, but I am thinking it’s a bit more LOL. Granted, this is a pushcart style stand lining a parking lot with other biz like the rose vendor and the sno cone shack. Not to disrespect the business, but this spot is a 3 at it’s apex. I had the most basic offering they had there as I have found that that is the safest way to try cart food, start with the simple average item to see what they do with that before going yard on the menu . I had the 2 water dogs, side and soda deal. I asked if the cole slaw and/or potato salad was heavy on mayo and was told it was not.. At first I ordered the potato salad and when I saw that it was a heavy mayo mix, I opted for a bag of chips instead. The dogs are average, at best. True, they serve Sabrett all beef, but they’re just plain hot dogs. It’s cart style, and the actual spot itself is a chain link construction with nylon top, wall and sign, hence it is like eating at a hot shack. The gentleman that served me was nice and polite. I am sure that there are other items on the menu that are better, but I found this spot totally underwhelming and not deserving of any of the 5 star or even 4 star ratings that this spot has..

Smokey Pig BBQ – Menu with Prices – 1617 11th Ave, Columbus

Today was the first time i’ve eaten from Smokey Pig in Columbus, GA and i was so disappointed. The potato salad tasted like bad store bought, the brunswick stew tasted like it was burnt, the loaded potato tasted like the potato was cooked to long or sitting out to long because it was so dry. My friend had chicken but instead of it being a piece of chicken on the bone it was cut up in little cubes (i’ve never seen cubed chicken from a barbecue place). We both work down the street but we will NEVER go back and eat from them. Very disappointed and a waste of money.

Mama Juana Grocery – Menu with Prices – 822 Maryland Ave, Wilmington

I can’t believe how friendly and welcoming the staff were. The food was fresh and very flavorful. Like the commercial I was looking for my Grandmom. For food you can find in a grocery store, it can be compared to Resturant quality. If your near the area and crave Dominican food this spot is it. The ribs were out standing, my friend Laury had thePhilly cheese steak she said best she has had, Esaul had the potato meat stuff balls said it was very good, the potato salad and chicken stew were outstanding. They have so many selections it get hard to select. Stop on in and try it out for yourself

Chi’Soul Food – Menu with Prices – 2859 S Salina St, Syracuse

Cute little restaurant that recently opened up on Syracuse’s South Side on April 5th. They’re only open on Fridays from 12pm – 8pm/9pm and Saturdays from 2pm – whenever they sell out. There’s usually a pretty long line out the door before they’re even open because the food is just so good! Their menu changes all the time, so you have to check their Facebook too see what they have for the day. The chi’ in their name stands for Chinese, as there is a Chinese influence on the menu from when the owner’s mom used to work at a Chinese restaurant and learned how to make some of the dishes on the menu: chicken/shrimp fried rice, ribs and rice, etc. We got there at 11:45am today and to our surprise, there wasn’t a line yet! However, as 12pm started to roll around, the people started coming. There were maybe 20-30 people standing outside waiting. They were a little behind schedule today and didn’t open till about 12:25pm. Oh boy. The crowd outside got haaaaangry! But once they finally opened, everyone was more than happy to continue to wait in line to order some food. So when you order, you order a main with two sides. You can also order some desserts, as well. A hearty portion of food is piled into 3-sectioned styrofoam containers. We ordered: – stew chicken with candied yams and potato salad – smothered pork chops with collard greens and baked mac n cheese – a pint side portion of shrimp fried rice (in a little Chinese to-go box) Ohhhhh boy! The food was sure worth the wait! The meat from the stew chicken and the pork chops were sooooo soft, tender, and practically fell right off the bone! The sauce they were in were so flavorful and absolutely delicious. The stew chicken’s sauce was slightly too sweet for my taste, but it was still very good. The candied yams were beautifully candied with just the right amount of sweetness to it. The collard greens are savory and delicious. Definitely try these. The baked mac n cheese was also very yummy! The texture of it was a little too mushy for me, but the flavor is definitely there. My favorite side was definitely the potato salad. I don’t know what they put in this, but I can’t stop eating it! Oh yeah, you also get a piece of cornbread with your meal. It’s a good piece of cornbread, but it was on the drier side for me. Seating is limited, as the store itself is relatively small. There are about 10 eat spots available along wall, but only 6 chairs to sit at. Most of the people just ordered their food and took it to go. This is a family fun business and maybe they’re still trying to get into the groove of things, but the service itself could use some help with streamlining to increase productivity and speed. Other than that, the food is delicious and I would definitely come back to try some of the other items on their menu.

Taqueria El Refugio – Menu with Prices – 5307 Bragg Blvd, Fayetteville

Came here for a late lunch with a friend. As you might have guessed, it’s not a sit down restaurant and there is no seating provided. It’s a food truck and so you will have to either eat it in your car, or risk it getting cold on your way to your dining location. My friend ordered the beef tacos and I ordered the chicken. We both had three and that was the perfect amount- I was perfectly content after having those three. I wasn’t crazy about the flavors- I thought it was rather bland and so ended up compensating with way too much hot sauce (they provide hot sauces with different levels of heat). What I did love however was the amount of vegetables they put into the meal!- cucumbers, peppers, radishes. It made the meal feel very fresh.

Riverdale indian cuisine – Menu with Prices – 308 W 231st St, The Bronx

We ordered 3 lunch specials. Chicken biryani , chicken tandoori and chicken tikka massala. Both chicken platters were well seasoned. The chicken tandoori was the show plate. Sizzling hot plate 2 portions of chicken on a bed of onions and sweet green peppers; for sure wort ordering. The tandori chicken was moust and very succult and the bed of onions and peppers was a nice touch. 2nd best was the chicken tikka massala, the sauce was creamy. Nice seasoning not overpowering but you can still taste cumin, coriander and the garan masala. So while the sauce was on point, your lunch portion will be about 4 to 5 ounce container with lots of sauce and just 4 pieces of chicken. No way you call that a lunch. I get it, making indian food is expensive due to the high cost of the spices. However, they could charge a bit more and give you more chicken. This portion was ridiculously small, plus i was still hungry in the end. If anything this portion should be for an appetizer instead of a main course meal. The disappointment came about when we saw the chicken biryani. No raisins or any kind of fruit at all. Usually the chicken is cooked in the rice but this one the rice was made separate and the chicken was poured on top, the rice lacked flavor and depth. I felt like i should have just order white rice with a side of curry chicken. I do like the fact that you can bring your own wine and they do have nice glassware for the wine and water service; that is a plus for sure. Personally, i can appreciate that. The place was clean, decor was not intrusive and best of all the smell of the kitchen stayed in the kitchen. Sometimes you go have indian food and you cone out smelling like curry..lol The naan was tasty and made to order but could have benefited from a brushing of butter. However it was tasty, soft and we had a good portion order for the table of 3 ppl. They do have home made mango chutney $4 extra and well worth it.
