Was desperate for a cake so I yelped and found this hidden (in the WAYY back of the business buildings) gem. I felt like I was in the backroom of some kitchen, but it was their actual room for business and stuff. I guess I was expecting more of a bakery with a glass case and customers, but this location was mostly for production. Any way, I told the lady what I was looking for and she presented a small raspberry chocolate cake with a hard choco shell on the outside and choco mousse inside. It was a little out of my range, but I was running out of time and it did sound good so I just got it. I asked her to put “happy birthday” on the top, and it turned out ok, Nothing super fancy. I was all satisfied and on my way to the party when I realized the cake had shifted and slid around in the box and was now pressed up against the side (ruining the outside)!! And what was worse was the words had shifted as well (it was regular frosting on a gel glazed surface) and now looked like broken up squiggly lines of white frosting. They weren’t even letters, just a jumble of lines! My heart totally sank cuz I thought it was going to look so great… but as soon as I had a slice, I totally forgot about the mishap. This cake was so moist and the subtle raspberry with the chocolate mousse made it unforgettable. OMG I’m craving it now. One word to describe it? Decadent. Show passionate pastry cafe the lovin it deserves . :]]

Bert’s Bakery – Menu with Prices – 4419 S Westnedge Ave, Kalamazoo

I’ve always thought of Bert’s Bakery as the nearest local competitor to the Boonzaaijer Bakery. I suppose this belief dates back to a time when my mother favored the butter cream frosting of the Boonzaaijer Bakery, while my father liked the people who worked at Bert’s Bakery. I, personally, like the cakes and pastries from the Boonzaaijer Bakery. As I have said before, Boonzaaijer cakes will be featured at my funeral. But today was not about me, and the person of honor had been hinting about trying a cake from Bert’s Bakery. She chose a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting with a raspberry jelly between the two layers. Likes: 1. The cake was a denser cake than what Boonzaaijer’s makes. When it comes to chocolate cake, the denser, the better. 2. Much prettier flowers made with frosting adorned the cake. Dislikes: 1. The two layers were not of equal size. The top layer of cake was twice the height of the lower layer. 2. I still like the frosting Boonzaaijer’s uses more than Bert’s Bakery’s. 3. The bakery misspelled the person of honor’s name though I handwritten it out in big block letters for them beforehand. (And yes, I did check before I walked out with the cake, but decided the fix – the bakery couldn’t have just make a simple letter substitution, because then the spacing in the name would have been obviously wrong – would have been too much trouble. And, anyway, I knew the guest of honor would care least of all of us.)

Di Rosani’s – Menu with Prices – 105 S Main St, Irving

We were staying at a hotel nearby. Yelp reviews were good so off we went. Upon entry, we were initially confused. Not sure if it was a sit down and be served or a counter service type establishment,we were not greeted at the door but when we approached the counter the staff helped us out. . . The menu cards in a binder was odd but functional. . . Bread was brought to us, hot and fresh. The bread was a baked rolled pizza dough and very good but was missing butter or an oil to dip. . . Chicken risotto and the fettuccini were good. The risotto while delicious was very oily, there was a rim of oil surrounding the dish and the chicken was small chopped pieces. . . Dessert was the chocolate mousse cake pictured with the dabs of raspberry. The raspberry was the perfect touch to compliment this very rich cake. . . We liked this restaurant so much, we returned two days later. We had the vodka sauce penne with shrimp and the manicotti with alfredo sauce and a side of Italian sausage. Deep fried ravioli for an appetizer and the chocolate mousse cake again along with the tiramisu. . . The vodka sauce and manicotti were delicious. The Italian sausage was good but way too salty,to the point it was hard to eat. The appetizer was fresh and hot, we enjoyed it. . . The desserts the second trip were a disappointment. There was no raspberry sauce with the mousse cake and it made a huge difference in the experience. The tiramisu was soggy and not in a good way. . . Overall, great experience. We enjoyed ourselves, the service was good and we will return when in the area.

Takes the Cake – Menu with Prices – 1194 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena

4.5 stars So…I finally ordered a cake from this 35 years in business, Pasadena, CA bakery…I’ve been looking for an excuse for over 6 months to partake of a cake from this bakery again. Takes the Cake specializes in custom cakes only. They do not have a bakery case for grab and go items. I ordered for a birthday/anniversary get together and it was the perfect excuse to order a 1/4 sheet cake to feed 20-25 people. They kindly let me sample some fillings with white cake, but I did not know they had lemon cake and would have loved to try that as I love lemon. I ordered the white cake with strawberry mousse on half and raspberry mousse and lemon curd on the other half. $60 for a 1/4 sheet. The cake was beautiful, they do a great job of making buttercream look like fondant. Everyone who tasted the cake seemed to like it, some said it was the best cake they have ever tried. I really liked the cake but to be honest it was not AS enjoyable as the first time I tried it but still a very good cake, especially when you want something nicer than a standard grocery store cake. The slice from the round cake I initially tried at a party several months ago seemed more pleasant to eat than a square slice from the 1/4 sheet. The layers of the edge slices on the 1/4 sheet cake also did not seem to stay together as well. They filled the cake a day before my order which surprised me, I know because I was going to change up the filling to add a thin layer of raspberry filling and when I called in they said the cake was already filled, regardless, it still tasted fresh for the most part. I ordered a separate $5 mini cake with the same filling to share with someone who was not able to make it to the party…she loved it! The mini was enough for 4 small servings, a perfect way to do a pre taste. All in all, not a full 5 star review because I was a little disappointed when I found out they use a flour cake mix for some of their cakes versus making it completely from scratch. I was also disappointed that the edge slices of my sheet cake seemed too delicate and the cake was starting to fall apart, almost on the verge of breaking into large chunks, and the layers did not stay together as well on the outer slices. If I were to order again, I would order a round cake versus a sheet cake, the ratio of frosting to cake was better on the round and more consistently even. With all this said, the cake was still very enjoyable but not absolutely perfect.

Antler Baking Co. Menu with Prices 10 Prospect St, Bellingham

Well, my girlfriends and I always love a good dessert, and when we saw the display earlier in the day the Woods Coffee employee gave us the scoop and said you have to try her desserts. We have our usual favorites in town for certain things, but I do think Bellingham can always use a great little dessert spot that offers up a variety of items beyond just cupcakes/cake. Amidst the decor of warm woods and white cake stands is a variety of impressive desserts. Our selection for the day included peanut butter pie, a chocolate torte with a berry sauce, carrot cake, a gluten free polenta cake, porter chocolate coconut caramel, white cupcakes with raspberry and a tequila frosting I think, and mascarpone chocolate chip cookie sandwiches, among other things. What I love are the unique flavor combinations: cardamom, porter, sea salt, candied orange, mascarpone….these desserts are definitely elevated beyond your typical fare. I opted for the cupcake and chocolate cake. The cupcake was dense and moist, just the way I like cake. The tart raspberry balanced lovely with the sweet frosting. The chocolate cake was phenomenal. A lighter cake in crumb texture but rich in chocolate flavor and superbly moist. The coconut flavor in the frosting resonated but didn’t overpower and the toasted coconut on the exterior added a great textural element. The porter was pronounced, with that coffee richness I associate with those beers. The caramel was rich and delicious. Overall everyone in my group raved about their desserts, and we are so happy to have a unique delicious option in downtown and close to work. Check it out!

Lindmair Bakery – Menu with Prices – 9230 Magnolia Ave, Riverside

Absolutely Amazing, Quick, Quality, Superior Knowledge, Extra Nice! It was my Parent’s 50th Wedding Anniversary. When they were married, they saved the top of the cake for their 1st Anniversary, but it was Horrible. They couldn’t even Eat a bite. So their “Must Have Gift” had to be the top to their cake 50 years later. My Great Grandma made the original cake. When I gave them the Lindmair Wedding Anniversary cake they were So Excited. Imagine having to wait 50 years to finally “have their cake and eat it too!” ? It was truly the Best Gift EVER. Marble cake with chocolate mousse filling and the most beautiful and tasty butter frosting. Thank you So Much, Lindmair Bakery. You made the day. They actually cut the cake with their original cake knife from 50 years ago! So Very Blessed and Beautiful and Over the Top “WOW YUMMY”!

Mugsy’s Coffee Co M2 – Menu with Prices – 620 Dunlop Ln #123, Clarksville

One of my favorite…ok.probably my favorite coffee shop for coffee drinks in Clarksville. I LOVE that they have so many sugar free flavored syrups for you to choose from! My favorite, so far, is coconut! Love me some coconut. I usually get a scone too. Today I had a morning glory muffin…it was basically carrot cake without the frosting..loaded with carrots, raisins, coconut, walnuts and (I think?) pineapple. I’m gonna say something…and it may sound mean..but it’s not..I’m just being descriptive. The scones and the muffins I’ve had there are always very brown. Not burnt, but pretty brown. Carmelized. But guess what? THAT’S OK WITH ME! I am that person who likes the corner pieces, the cookies that are a hair overdone…that’s the way I like them. Only once has a scone been a little too done even for me…ONCE. I’ve had blueberry, white chocolate raspberry and apple scones. I think the white chocolate raspberry is my favorite. Their scones are hearty, not like those sad “I can’t decide if I’m cake or a biscuit” type scones some places serve. I don’t mind if you wanna sell me a blueberry muffin…just don’t try to pass it off as a scone because you cut it in a triangle. But, alas, there is a sadness in my heart..they’re closed on Sundays. If you’re wanting your Mugsy’s on Sunday…buy an extra on Saturday and heat it up on Sunday. Problem solved.

Royal Pastry Shop – Menu with Prices – 738 Cambridge St, Cambridge

I found the Royal Pastry Shop on Yelp last week, after visiting 6 other bakeries in the Newton/Brookline area and disheartened at the options; prices for birthday cakes; and or the need to order 2 weeks or more in advance. I called other pastry shops that were highly recommended on Yelp and fainted at the quoted price for an 8-9 inch customized birthday cake for my mom’s 100th birthday. Royal Pastry was willing to take an order by phone, but I went there on Friday. They said 24 hours was all the lead time needed. I chose a 9-inch chocolate mousse cake with both vanilla and chocolate layers, chocolate mouse filling with strawberries. I picked it up Sunday morning, and my mom blew out her candles last night. We all thought it was the most scrumptious, wonderful birthday cake we had ever had. Keep in mind, at 100 years, Mom has tasted quite a few. The inscription on the top said ” Happy Birthday”, followed by her name. Then per my request, there was an additional message inscribed around the outside of the cake. Huge glazed fresh strawberries were also placed on top. It was decadent and addictive. The cake itself was not overly sweet, tasted totally homemade from scratch, and light! The mousse was lip-smacking and scrumptious. It was a light milk chocolate, not overwhelming with too much chocolate or too sweet. Just perfect. Really. The cake was huge and heavy as I carried it out of the shop, but light as a feather to devour. We ate so much, you would think we’d never want another bite of cake again, but I am ready to go back and just buy the cake again. The price was, also, more than reasonable. I really want to thank the baker at Royal Pastry. She made the day for my Mom!

Couture Cakes By Nika – Menu with Prices – 10373 Warwick Blvd, Newport News

This is the best bakery to grace the Earth! (I still don’t understand why people would go anywhere else in Newport News) Maple Bacon Cupcakes Ok my review is done. LOL! Ive grown up around amazing bakeries, I even grew up with Amish and Mennonite bake businesses. Living in Va Beach, I am near some fine bakeries but still only go to one…..25 minutes away and across a bridge tunnel and that is this fine shop by Nika. Many places will make cupcakes or cakes and call it something due to the frosting having that flavor. But Nika goes above and beyond making both the frosting and cake go with the intended flavor. Where a run of the mill business will have a Key Lime cupcake with only the frosting adhering to the flavor and the cake being a generic white cake; Nika will have a key lime frosting and cake with lime or graham crumble. Want something unique? Try her Lavender cupcake. Want to die by chocolate, get the Chocolate Overload with some actual chocolate bar on top. Have a cheat day with the amazing Peanut Butter fudge. Or want the recipe Oreo is seeking, have her cookies and cream cake……Hell, have them all there isn’t one you’d go wrong with. The cupcakes are the tip of the iceberg. She is an artist, bakes cakes, cookies and anything else…… Finally, we had her do our wedding. My god the almond cake melted in your mouth. The crowd went gaga over her cake and were more than happy to take some cupcakes home. And after a year of being frozen until our anniversary it was still an amazing bite. If you want to be the toast of your party….just get 2 dozen different cupcakes and you’ll be welcomed back! MAPLE BACON CUPCAKE!!!!!!!!

Pure Decadence Pastries – Menu with Prices – 4740 Liberty Rd S, Salem

I will start by saying the cake was phenomenal! That is coming from someone who absolutely hates cakes! However the service was awful! When we got there to talk about what we were wanting for my baby shower cake we showed her a picture of the exact cake we wanted and how we wanted a naked cake with no other frosting on it. Just a simple naked cake. She took notes of that and looked at the picture as well and said she could totally do that! Although the whole time we were there she acted as if we were bothering her or taking up her time. She wrote down on everything we talked about. When we came to pick up the cake she showed it to us and there was a BRIGHT GREEN FROSTING all over the top and bottom of the cake! When we wanted no frosting because we don’t like frosting. When we told her this is not what we asked for she told us that she had nothing to go by, when we HAD showed her a picture when we first got there to order it. So she lied about that and then tried to make it better by saying that she purchased $25 worth of little animals to put all over the cake when we NEVER asked for that what so ever! So all in all it was a horrible experience and very disappointing! I was in tears because I had envisioned and showed her what I wanted and she didn’t even care or even apologize! AWFUL customer service! I wouldn’t have been as upset if she would have compensated up with it either being free or half off AT LEAST! But NOTHING! And no ownership at all for what she had done! So if you are getting married or have a shower I would suggest you go elsewhere for your cake because I’m telling you, there is a high chance you will not be happy in the end.

Lincoln Cake Lady – Menu with Prices – 8208 Dorset Dr, Lincoln

My wife and I heard the “Cake Lady” did great cakes so for our wedding we ordered two. A chocolate one, and a “wedding cake” flavored one. We were old school and back in the day wedding cake had a distinctive flavor, which the cake lady knew and said was vanilla and almond and yes she also made cakes with that flavor for people like us. With the fresh raspberry puree between the layers and the butter cream frosting these two cakes were without question the best we’ve ever had, which was also the comment by many of the foodie family guests we. Three years latter we still talk about it. Since the wedding we’ve ordered two others cakes, one for a graduation which I took out to Cheyenne Wyoming with the car’s A/C blowing on it, and one for fun. My wife and I have since moved to Kansas City but we miss these and would strongly recommend the Cake Lady to anyone wanting a memorable cake. She is great to work with and does a spot on job!

Nothing Bundt Cakes – Menu with Prices – 1860 Laskin Rd Suite 130, Virginia Beach

If you want moist and delicious cakes, you’ve come to the right place. Or you’re about to, if you’ve never been & are reading this review while trying to decide. First tried the Newport News location but it is too far from me personally. Then this Laskin location came along… it’s good and bad for me! Easier access. Ahhhhhhhh. But anything in moderation is fine. Located in the “La Promenade Distinctive Shops” shopping center off of Laskin Road, same shopping that Aldo’s Italian Restaurant is in, but opposite end. What finally had me come to this location? Birthday cake for hubby last February. I choose the 10 inch Lemon flavored bundt because I was greedy and chose MY favorite, but asked hubby what he wanted and he said White Chocolate Raspberry, so I called and said “I ordered a cake for so and so date, can I still change order/flavor?” They easily accommodated! (It was a huge hit, by the way.) Their flavors: Chocolate Chocolate Chip Classic Vanilla Red Velvet White Chocolate Raspberry Confetti Carrot Lemon Marble Pecan Praline (And a feature flavor that changes. Once it was strawberry, and per website now, Aug 2019, it’s Blueberry Bliss.) They have: 8 inch Bundt cakes, serves 8-10 $23 10 inch Bundt cakes, serves 18-20 $33 Tiered Bundt cakes, serves 26-30 $59 Bundtlets (minis) $4.59 Bundtinis (bite-sized) Dozen = $19.50 *Cake toppings/decor are extra of course. Their thick frosting is made with “velvety cream cheese & real butter.” The hours for Virginia Beach Laskin location: Mon – Sat 10am – 7pm Sunday – closed Again I say, their cakes are so very delicious and moist. Their tagline in their commercial while I was on hold was, “Cakes so good, you’ll wish it didn’t have a hole!” I highly recommend and could definitely eat a Bundtlet a day. I totally would! *Review #40 of 2019.

The Macon Baking Company – Menu with Prices – 4524 Forsyth Rd #204, Macon

My mom, daughter and aunt recently visited the (fairly) newly opened Macon Baking Company on Forsyth Rd. We went on a Friday afternoon for a little sugar pick-me-up after a day of shopping in Ingleside Village. We were instantly greeted by Dan, the owner, with complimentary chocolate mousse cups! Little bites of heaven, according to my daughter. The ‘cups’ were edible chocolate and were filled with a light-as-air chocolate mousse and topped with a fresh raspberry. The display case was full of delightful looking confectionary creations such an oreo wrapped in a chocolate chip cookie, wedding cookies and ‘cruffins’-a cross between a croissant and a muffin. However, full disclosure, we were there for the macaroons. Not the type most Southerners are used to eating made with pecans and coconut. Real.French.Macaroons! Macon Baking Company had an entire state of the art, cooled, display case for these little treats. The flavors that day were raspberry, pistachio, lemon, vanilla, chocolate and coffee. For those of you that don’t know, a French macaroon looks similar to a sandwich cookie in that it is two halves with a jam or cream filling. But that is where the similarity ends….the halves are made from meringue, so they are very light and crispy. Each macaroon at Macon Baking Company is about two bites’ worth. Our party tried the raspberry, lemon, pistachio and chocolate. They were devoured and we even got some to take home! Dan visited with us while we enjoyed our treats, and he was so personable and seemed to really enjoy what he was doing. It made our little sugar refueling stop that much more memorable! I will be stopping by the Macon Baking Company again!
