We stayed around the corner from this spot and I knew we’d have to stop in for a taste. No fully sure what most things were but that is half the fun! We selected a few familiar items like a churro and chocolate dipped palmier-type treat. Both were tasty and seemed freshly made. The fluffy powdered roll with the pudding dollop was a bit underwhelming – appreciated the unique spice element for a change in flavor but the roll itself was dry and seemed a day or more old. The strawberry streusel type fold over was very tender thanks to the egg based on the pastry, which I appreciated. The coarse ground sugar made for a nice presentation and added sweetness along with the fruit filling. All in all this was probably the sweetest option which I appreciated that the others weren’t overly so compared to most American bakery items. I think my impulse by at the register may have been my favorite item, or at least a tie for second with the strawberry turnover. The roll was very fresh, tender and mildly sweet and enveloped a wonderful cream cheese and jalapeño center that could stand alone as a sandwich in my opinion. For only $1.50 it was a great addition to our order, which totaled under $6.00. Great value for the quality selection. Would love to try a few more of the less sweet/classic bread or roll options if we stop back before leaving town. I read their tres leches cake is phenomenal too and after trying these items – I’m sure it certainly is!

Super Donut / Kolache Donut – Menu with Prices – 6330 De Zavala Rd, San Antonio

I had a sudden craving for Kolaches and decided to stop by in the morning before work. It gets pretty busy in the morning and there is one nice lady who works there rushing to get everyone’s order. The first thing I ordered were a dozen of the sausage, cheese, jalapeño kolaches. They are on the room temperature side but she asks if you want them to be heated. The bread/dough they use is sooooooo good. It tastes like the Hawaiian sweet rolls you buy at the store but so much better. The bread alone makes it amazing. And the jalapeño,cheese and sausage in the middle with the sweet bread is so delicious! I did try a strawberry donut the next week and the dough is fluffy and nicely sweetened. However, it has a slightly artificial strawberry taste which I’m not too fond of. I’ll definitely come back for the Kolaches and to try some of the other donuts.

Fillings & Emulsions – Menu with Prices – 1475 Main St, Salt Lake City

I wanted to love Fillings and Emulsions, especially in light of the fact that this is also my husband’s nickname for me. It used to be jelly filled doughnut, but as our relationship has matured, so have our nicknames. First off, the space is hip and urban. You can watch the pastry chefs at work making their masterpieces in the kitchen. This is cool. I love watching pastry chefery in action. The service was great as well. We had pastry guides to help us decide what the best choices were. We got a variety of items including gelato, lime cheesecake, guava tart, and guava cream cheese roll cake, and macarons. My favorite thing by far was the lemon strawberry macaron. It was light and delicious and had just enough tart to offset the sweet of the berry. What disappointed me was the gauva cream cheese roll cake. I only ate half and then threw the rest away. The cake was extremely dry like it had been sitting in a fridge for far too long. The guava flavor in the cake was really hard to distinguish in any meaningful way. It just tasted like a nondescript sweet jelly substance. The cream cheese filling was good though. I would like to go back and see if this was just an off day or if I ordered the wrong thing, but there are other dessert establishments I would rather spend my money at based on my first experience.

Bug & Belle Bakery – Menu with Prices – 3712 W 32nd Ave, Denver

I’ve tried a lemon strawberry muffin, the cinnamon roll on weekends, quiche and the ham and cheese roll. The rolls are nice if you prefer a savory breakfast. One roll is plenty big and satisfying. Nice chewy texture with crispy cheese and ham. The lemon strawberry muffin was delicious. I prefer a dense muffin and this one was a nice mixture of dense and light. The lemon was a beautiful flavor with tart fresh strawberries. The muffin was perfectly sweet without being overbearingly sweet like many muffins out there tend to be. The cinnamon roll was perfect. I really enjoyed the frosting. Hopefully they can add the frosting to some of their other baked items such as the muffins. Quiche was really nice seasoning with Asparagus, fontina and ham. Lee delicious only suggestion would be to have a heavier crust as it was very delicious. Finally a nice bakery that’s in the ‘hood, Highlands!

Button & Co. Bagels Menu with Prices 32 S Lexington Ave, Asheville

Right around the corner from the Aloft. I read the reviews and they were from awesome to too expensive. Well it is awesome but the price is right. Hate to tell you if you think it’s expensive, but you’re an idiot. House made products with ingredients from local producers are expensive because of quality and lack of economics of scale. If you’re cheap move along. If you like your dollars to do more than support Sysco or US Foods eat here. Service: is spot on, the young man at the register was exceedingly pleasant and handled my mayo phobia with cheer. We got the pastrami sandwich as well as the jam and sable. Oh a strawberry soda as well. Pastrami sandwich: meaty perfect pairing of a firm but chewy bagel with wonderfully spiced & cured pastrami. It left me wanting more pastrami. Sable sandwich: the marriage of spicy ramp cream cheese & salty sable was perfect. Only tweak would be pickled onions but that may be over kill. Jammer sandwich: the raisin bagel with jam & cream cheese made a perfect breakfast dessert. Not too sweet with a tartness from the cream cheese being a great balance. Strawberry soda: was good reminds me of the strawberry soda I make. A little tartness to go with the strawberry sweetness makes it refresh with out feeling like you are going to get instant diabetes. Bagels: these deserve their own comment. Firm and crusty on the outside, chewey and flavorful on the inside. Summary: great place, awesome service, incredible bagels priced right. Those who say it is overpriced should shut their cheap mouth and go back to Ingles and get the 2 for $3 deal on a bread bag of Thomas’s.

Bodo’s Bagels – Menu with Prices – 1418 Emmet St N, Charlottesville

When I was a student at UVA, Bodo’s was the universal staple. I visited Charlottesville this past weekend and knew I had to make a stop (or two) at my all-time favorite bagel place. Don’t be scared by the line…it moves QUICK and the bagels are baked to perfection so you won’t be disappointed. I can come for breakfast/brunch and get a solid egg and cheese (sometimes with No Bull if I’m HUNGRY) bagel, or lunch and get a sandwich for whatever mood I’m in! The options are endless so if you’re feeling basic you can get a standard bagel with cream cheese (I’d recommend the Jalapeno Lime or Honey Pecan), but if you’re more adventurous you could go for a bagel sandwich with lettuce, onion, tomato, pesto, red pepper spread, and provolone (just spitballin’ here :P). In any case, Bodo’s is by far the best bagel spot in Charlottesville and I highly recommend.

Sushi Domo Oak St – Menu with Prices – 2835 Oak St, Eugene

My friend took me to dinner here tonight which is also my first time visiting this place. It’s a fantastic spot for some Sushi and traditional Japanese fare. We started off with Gyoza and Chicken Wings. Gyoza we’re good but the wings were a tad bit overcooked. My entree was Tonkatsu (Pork) which included Miso Soup and Salad, along with steamed rice and 2 pieces of California Roll. The pork was scrumptious and tender and with just the right amount of coating. The California Roll was very fresh and melted in my mouth. My friend had the Sweet and Sour Roll with Cucumber, Smoked Tofu and Plum Sauce, which she asked to be wrapped in rice paper rather than seaweed. She also had Inari and their Fried Guido Roll which consists of Cream Cheese, Avocado and Cashews; topped with Pickled Jalapeno. I tried both rolls and they were excellent. What made our dinner especially nice was the attentive service from our waiter. I totally have forgotten his name but as an extra thank you, my friend returned with a slice of cheesecake from the bakery around the corner for him. I’m sure it made his night!

Yeh’s Bakery – Menu with Prices – 5725 Main St, Flushing

Note: Cash only Never knew the famous cake was known as Boston Cream Pie since to me, it’s a cream pie with chocolate. I always called the cake by the flavor (Strawberry, Green Tea, etc). On first look, the cake with cream and confectionery sugar on top doesn’t look exciting. I was reminded to make sure the cake is refrigerated before serving. Brought 2 strawberry cakes for the events, I attended. Both group loved the cake. When you cut and eat your first slice, the cake is so light and fluffy meanwhile the cream is a perfect balance. You don’t feel guilty eating since it’s not heavy. This is the type of cream I can eat non-stop. The store is on a street that has hit or miss street parking so you might need to park further away. There are no tables in the store — more of an order and leave. There are some baked goods including wrapped sponge cake.

Michealangelo’s Pizza and Pasta – Menu with Prices – 700 Locust St, Des Moines

I had a chance to order Sammies in today so I choose a couple items off their menu. Iowegian Bacon, ham, turkey, cheese (?), pickles, mustard, on a pressed hoagie roll. Big Beefy Roast beef, cheese (Swiss I think), roasted mushrooms, peppers, onions, on a hoagie roll. Both sandwiches were very good. The Iowegian was reminiscent of a Cuban and had a nice smokey flavor to the meat. Each component complimented another. You may wonder why I noted the cheese with a question mark… I think it had cheese on it, but it didn’t really stand out and I couldn’t find an online menu to verify everything. The Big Beefy isn’t exactly what I would call BIG, but it was good. Once again a well put together sandwich. I wasn’t fond of the to go packaging with this one… The wax paper and cheese were hard to separate and one kind of blended in with the other. I can’t knock it for taste though. The au jus worked well with the sandwich. It was kind of a Philly/Italian beef hybrid. Kudos for putting their own spin on each sandwich. Make sure you load up on napkins… Neither sandwich came out of the packaging clean. Definitely not something to try to eat in the car while you’re driving. Each sandwich was in the between $7.50 and $8.00 range. Were they worth it? They were. They had that straight out of the kitchen feel to them. Not a processed meat assembly line feel.

Sweets & Cream – Menu with Prices – 1114 S Yale Ave, Tulsa

I’ve lived about 5 minutes from this place for over a year and never thought to check it out. Then the other day I was looking for a place to take the wife to satisfy her sweet tooth and found them on Yelp. This place is about as close to perfect as I can think to be honest. For $2 you get to create your own ice cream sandwich made up of any two baked goods they have (and they bake their own stuff so it’s good on its own) and a generous scoop of hand dipped ice cream in a variety of flavors. When I read that they had ice cream sandwiches for $2 I figured it would be something tiny considering the prices that some boutique ice cream shops around the area charge for rolled ice cream, gelato, etc. These were state fair type portions and I struggled to finish mine (blondie brownie, butter pecan ice cream, and German chocolate brownie) but I managed to power through it because it was delicious. The location is great because you could have dinner a few feet away at Tally’s and walk a few laps around the shopping center before stopping in for one of these. The only thing that would make them better in my opinion would be if they were open everyday and if they served hot coffee and cocoa (maybe they do, I just didn’t notice it) but these are just my personal preferences. They keep things simple and deliver an outstanding product at a price that won’t scare families away due to sticker shock, even with them being just off historic Route 66.

Cupcake Cutie Etc. – Menu with Prices – Court Square, 109 S Ct Ave, Memphis

We end up coming here pretty often. The owners are great and very friendly and I appreciate that they let me use their bathroom. This place specializes in build-your-own cupcakes. You can mix and match any base flavor with any cream and top it with a number of fun toppings. My favorite base is the strawberry one and the pineapple one because they have little bits of their respective fruit mixed into the batter and it’s always a delight when I get a bite of one. I’ve tried a bunch of random combinations but my favorite thing to do is to ask them what they think goes well with what I’ve chosen. Sometimes it works out and sometimes I have to adjust it later but I usually leave with an awesome cupcake that is at least enjoyable, even if not my all-time favorite. They are also very accommodating here. They will add sparkles, color, and chocolate or caramel syrup for free. The sparkles are really popular with the people I have brought with me to visit. The large comes with one free topping, otherwise all toppings are .50 each. They have a rack to the side of discount cupcakes you can buy. They’re on sale because they were made the previous day. I usually check what they have there first. Oh, don’t forget to come in on your birthday for a free cupcake! Subculture Extraordinary Sandwiches – Menu with Prices – 7862 Warner Ave, Huntington Beach

LOOKIN’ FOR A BUZZWORTHY SAMMY? LOOK NO FURTHER! Was fortunate to have been introduced to this local sandwich spot by my s/o and have been in love with them ever since! Whenever I’m in the HB area, we always try to make it a point to grab subs from here for lunch and if you’ve been here before, you’ll know why! I’ve been here several times in the last year, yet, find myself always coming back to two favorite picks on their Menu: #10. Dirtybird +1 Turkey, Jalapeno cream cheese, extra bacon, cherry peppers. There’s nothing like a good old turkey sammy with some extra bacon to lighten up your day. What else makes this so tasteful? The fact that they add some cherry peppers and their jalapeno cream cheese to throw in a nice kick to awaken the senses! I also LOVEEE how it’s made hot and inside my favorite bread – dutch crunch! Other fun picks I’ve tried and loved: #3. Firebird +1 Hot Turkey, Pepperjack, Bacon, Pow Sauce, Jalapeno Cream Cheese. This is my 2nd fave on Subculture’s menu when I’m feeling for more spice in my tummy. I love pepperjack cheese and I think Subculture throws it in their subs just right with this selection. They also throw in their top secret “pow sauce” to add an even stronger tingle! #6. Godfather Hot Salami, Ham, Pepperoni, Provolone, Red Pesto, Cherry Peppers, Italian Dressing. SPICY LOVERS – where ya at?!?!? Now. for all you spicy lover fans who’ve been following me the past 7 years, THIS IS FOR YOU! This is a similar concept as the Dirtybird, but without the bacon! It’s as fiery red from a sandwich you can get without compromising the taste. It takes a spicy lover to make this sandwich in particular, because if you are a spicy lover like me, you already know that you can’t just throw in a bunch of spices into one and make a masterpiece. You need to understand the various levels of spicy food and which ones compliment each other to make something successful. Now this, is a spicy-lover masterpiece! Now remember: all Sandwiches come on Dutch Crunch with Lettuce, Tomatoes, Onions, Pepperoncinis, and our House Made Garlic Sauce unless otherwise specified! As well, all their menu items come in either sizes: Regular 9.95 (4oz) ; Large 12.95 (6oz) ; XL 14.95 (8oz). I typically opt out of the onions as I am not a fan of them in my sammy’s and it still tastes just fine to me. As well, I very much appreciate how crunchy the dutch crunch is when my order is ready. They really nailed the gun on the bullseye on this one. It is not soggy at all, which really ruins it for me whenever I eat subs. So if you’re in the mood for a quick but full bite, make sure to make a pit stop at Subculture and you will not be disappointed! Pro Tips: + Located in strip mall with easy parking just feet away from the venue + Very limited seating (mostly outside), and may be difficult to accommodate large parties + Perfect place to grab and go! + Menu: http://www.subculturehb.com/ + FiveStars friendly! Save up points and grab some awesome sammy deals they have to offer!

Corner Sushi – Menu with Prices – 2443 Dixie Hwy, St. Augustine

I went to Corner Sushi bar located on Dixie highway in the same shopping center that Planet fitness it located. I went there for dinner and got a water and two sushi rolls the first roll I had was the Rock N Roll roll which had shrimp tempura, krab, cheese, and fish eggs in it. The second roll I had was the Yoyo Roll which has krab stick and cream cheese deep fried. When we first got they greeted and sat us right a way. We did not sit there for long still our server came to our table asking us what we wanted to drink. While we were looking over the menu they gave us a complementary roll and soup. It did not take long for us to get our food and once we got it the food was delicious. Once we were done with our meals and right before we got our checks we got a little piece of chocolate cake on the house. The service was fantastic and you would not have expected how nice the inside was from how they outside looked. It was very clean inside, you could see the chefs making the food, and good music. Everything I experienced there was great I wouldn’t say that there was anything they could have done better.
