I’ve had jjajangmyun (black bean noodles) my entire life so I’d say I have a pretty good idea of good v. bad noodles. My parents have been eating this dish for a majority of their lives, so a thumbs-up from us means NOM. I think that the jjajangmyun is one of the best I’ve had and would go so far as to say that it’s better than any of the ones I’ve had in Koreatown in LA, in Berkeley, and in Seattle. I don’t know what it is, but it’s delicious without being too salty and too sweet. My mom says that this place is her favorite so I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. I also love P&Y’s fried rice. I DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS, FOLKS! I eat fried rice all the time, being the Asian that I am, but it is so dang good here. I’m convinced it’s the pork grease, the pork (so tender and juicy!), and the crack. (In my head, I refer to this dish as “crack rice.”) I’m sure someone will eat this and be like, Alice, ‘what’s she smoking?’ And the answer is – nothing! Just high on life… and this rice. But seriously, so good. Sidenote: the fried rice comes with a small bowl of jjajangmyun sauce and a small bowl of jjamppong soup which is the best deal one could hope for. I have also liked their tangsooyook (fried sweet and sour pork (?)) and their Sichuan pork, which is similar to tangsooyook but is spicier. 10/10 recommend.

Phá»? Lê – Menu with Prices – 2100 SE 164th Ave, Vancouver

It’s rare I leave a review of a Vietnamese place that is this low. We went in and sat down to order. The menu was very plain, but looked decent. We ordered the regular salad rolls (pork and shrimp) as well as the chicken salad rolls. The pork and shrimp were decent, but light on the herb flavor. The chicken salad rolls were bland. Boiled chicken, rice noodles, and rice paper is pretty bland (no herbs of any kind, really?) My partners dish came first. He ordered the chicken vermicelli bowl. Despite the menu saying it was grilled, it was clearly stir fried chicken and very saucy. It wasn’t pleasant. They served it with what they called “sweet and sour sauce” which smelled strongly of vinegar but tasted like a very mild fish sauce with sugar and chili’s. Our friend had the pork version, which again was fried, not grilled. The bowl was quite bland over all. Lastly I had the 11. Pho dac biet – not bad broth, very clear, with a good portion of meat. The Tripe and tendon were tender, and the noodles fresh. This dish saved this review from being one star. The servers were friendly enough but the decor is weird (someone’s art/photo projects on the wall) and is taped awkwardly around. We won’t be back. Go to the Vietnamese place across the street. It’s SO much better.

Vietnam Taste – Menu with Prices – 666 Wonderland Rd N, London

We ordered some Vietnam Taste from JustEat.ca. We recently moved and wanted to find a place that sold Bun (Vermicelli Noodles) in our area. Vietnam Taste was the closest thing we found at the time, that was open on a Sunday night. When we opened up our food, we saw that they are using rice noodles but it definitely isn’t vermicelli. It was basically the size of spaghetti, maybe a bit bigger even. We had to order 2 of each topping choice on the dish. At most places, I order it with a spring roll and pork. I chose the “Spring Rolls and Pork” option, however I had to choose 2, so I picked it again because I didn’t want other meats. The dish came with 4 spring rolls and no pork. I was quite confused. The rolls were very hard and difficult to cut. I dont know if the pork was IN the roll itself but it didn’t taste like it. Either way, we weren’t too happy with our choice in changing restaurants. We will pass next time we are craving our favourite dish!

Il Poom Hyang – Menu with Prices – 4068 Jermantown Rd, Fairfax

I think this is my first yelp review. Good service= they have really good team work. Also fast communication with customers. Everyone there seem to know what to do all the time and actually want to be there to work. Clean environment. Good design. Funny photos on the side. No shitty musics like other places. Air condition and fan all around but they seem to work just enough so that it’s not too cold. I don’t know who is in charge of all these things but they are doing great. Their food? Let me start from their water. They serve barley water(the main ingredient for beer) both in cold and hot. It taste like beer. But no alcohol in it. I love it. Their Jjajangmyun is better than other places I tried previously. The noodle doesn’t taste like it was made 10 hours ago. I cooked my own ramen and spaghetti for more than 18 years in my life and their noodle is just cooked and served right. And it was just regular Jjajangmyun. Not even their better premium noodle. Fried pork with sweet sauce was great. Other places seem to try to add more fat and coat the pork with more layers of fat, it’s disgusting. But this place is great you will love it. I don’t know how they do it but it’s different cooking method. The fried part is minimum but just enough to have that crispy taste. Maybe it’s less than 1mm on some areas? The meat is just right. Not too soft and not too hard. Just right. Buckwheat cold noodle? (mill naeng myun?) was also good. I don’t remember the last time I had a quality noodle like this. All the ingredients in the water were used with purpose. The cider taste is on point. Their mild tofu soup with rice was good too. On point, classic. Better than all other places in the area in NOVA. I don’t think there is any other places with better quality. I wish my english was better to describe how awesome this place is. You can try this place and go try other place and compare on your own. ————-edit————– I forgot to add how their food doesn’t make you have inflammation. Other restaurants have that feeling in your throat because they made it too spicy, too much salt, or too much fat. I can actually eat their food and not worry about athletic & work performance.

The Conch Shell – Menu with Prices – 445 W 22nd St, Jacksonville

OMG!!! I’m m really upset with myself because I’ve been in the Jacksonville area for a few years now and I’m just now trying this amazing place. Everything on the menu looked and smelled amazing. I had the pigeon peas with rice, conch salad, fried conch, and fried shrimp. The food was fresh and cooked to order. The cook was sweet and she knows whats she’s doing in the kitchen. If you don’t go see her, you’re missing out on some amazing food! Im a customer for life!…

F&F Express – Menu with Prices – 8704 Cypress Waters Blvd suite 160, Irving

This is our new favorite fast grab meal! If you get a regular size bowl, you choose either steamed, brown, or fried rice as your base. On top of that, you get sweet potato noodles and grilled veggies (largely carrot, cabbage, onions that are peppered and salted). I usually opt for half the rice, no noodles, and more veggies! Then you can choose from a variety of meat options like different types of battered chicken, beef bulgogi, and spicy pork. My favorite is the spicy pork, but my husband prefers the bulgogi. Next, you automatically get two delicious and crispy dumplings and a spoonful of sweet corn. Lastly, you choose your combination of sauces: spicy mayo, teriyaki sauce, and spicy teriyaki sauce. I usually get the spicy mayo and spicy teriyaki! They have a $5 bowl option that’s a really good deal, especially if you aren’t super hungry as the regular bowl is way more food than I can personally eat. You only get one dumpling and additional vegetables like the sweet corn are fifty cents extra. You still get all the sauces you want. They have tons of parking and Pepsi sodas. Great delicious and wallet-friendly meal option!

THAI STREET Menu with Prices Broadway Market 1640, Aliceanna St #11, Baltimore

YUM! I am loving Broadway Market so much and was super excited that Thai Street was here since there isn’t much good Thai in Baltimore. Lots of different options and I’ve come multiple times so far: 1. Pad See Ew: noodles were super tasty–perfectly cooked, just soft enough but not too soft that they were disintegrating. Flavor of the sauce was really good, sweet and savory. I added pork to mine which was the only thing I disliked as the pork was pretty dry. Wished it also had some more vegetables, but would try again 2. Crab fried rice: I wasn’t expecting much from this dish but wow, the rice is packed with flavor. Decent amount of crab, but really, the rice is the star! A bit on the pricier side 3. This past Friday brought the Bike Party to Broadway Market, and for the event, Thai Street had a stall serving grilled chicken thigh with sticky rice. It’s not on the regular menu but it totally should be because this is my favorite dish so far that I’ve tried from Thai Street. The chicken is super tender, juicy, smokey from the grill, and marinated in an awesome sauce. Simple, but amazing. 4. Mango sticky rice: just a lovely dessert. Rice is perfectly cooked, mango is fresh and beautifully plated. Coconut milk is subtly sweet.

Wasabi Xpress Menu with Prices 2838 Washington Rd, Augusta

I had the banh cha gio thit nuong. Which is basically a rice noodle salad with vegetables, charbroiled pork chop, egg roll and fish sauce poured over it. I had this dish for over 40 years so I know it quite well. First I’ll say their cha gio are small, thin versions of what I’m used to having. So when my banh dish came with only 1 egg roll (and the cut up pork chop), I was surprised. It just didn’t seem like a lot. Their rice noodles are different than I am used to also. Theirs are softer and larger in diameter. Almost the size of Italian spaghetti. Rice noodles or vermicelli is typically thin threads. So I’m not going to order this fish again. I did have their goi cuon. Fortunately it remained tasty and freshly made like last time.

Yummy Express – Menu with Prices – 6441 Yadkin Rd #2166, Fayetteville

I’ll start off with saying I spent a year and a half in Korea eating out almost every day and always trying somewhere new.. so with that said my expectation might be higher because I’ve been searching for that same taste I enjoyed while in Korea. I think I’ve been here twice but I can’t remember the first time and it felt like I had been there before which automatically made me want to leave.. the staff was nice I can say that but my issue comes from the disconnect between food and cost… I spent $40 that day and what I got was Samgyeopsal-gui , and a bowl of ramen… This entailed about 8 small blan pieces of grilled pork belly a bowl of over cooked rice that had a weird taste (I love almost all kinds of rice) a bowl of ramen which was under cooked and poorly flavored.. (anything noodles are my favorite) there was Romain for the grilled pork belly but it was poorly prepared. It was just 5 pieces of extremely long leafs that looked like they were just ripped off and neatly stacked on a plate. The traditional way of eating the grilled pork belly is the leaf with one or two pieces of meat some rice and kimchi and pretty much whatever on the table that you would like to add put on top of this palm sized leaf. The leaf I got from here was so large in comparison that using 1 piece of meat some rice kimchi and sprouts I used two leafs that I had to tear apart multiple times and couldn’t even use half of the leaf. And the bowl of ramen wasn’t a lot at all like one bag of the Nissan ramen at Walmart you get for 50 cents, no it wasn’t those noodles they tasted like they had potential they were just handled with out care to how much they charge customers for the disappointment.. Now compare that to when I was in Korea, I would have spent $10 for all you can eat grilled pork belly that I cook, and a bowl of ramen at that size cooked wonderfully would have been about 4 bucks maybe cheaper depending on where I went. Who ever owns this store, I’m sorry for the bad review, please get back to the roots of taking pride in what you are selling.. when I was in Korea I got a huge bowl of Jjajangmyeon for 8 bucks by a man who spent $20,000 at a school just to learn the art behind the dish. Literally it was only for that dish now he runs a Jjajangmyeon shop. It was the best I’ve ever had

Mama Mary’s Soul Food – Menu with Prices – 372 Whalley Ave, New Haven

The Similans Thai Eatery – Menu with Prices – 13005 Lee Jackson Memorial Hwy, Fairfax

I had my first taste of Thai food 15 years ago: Pad See Ew with Beef at a Thai chain (which will remain unnamed), and my taste buds did somersaults at the first bite. But after 15 years of trying Thai here and trying it there, it began to taste about the same. Then came Similans. The best Thai I’ve had in years! On a recent snowy day, we ordered delivery – Pad See Ew with beef (can you tell this is my standard?), Hawaiian Fried Rice, Crispy Rolls, and Party Wings. Within an hour, the food was at our door and everything tasted fresh, hot, and absolutely delicious. The Pad See Ew is some of the best I’ve had in years. Every ingredient – rice noodles, Chinese broccoli, egg, and beef strips – is cooked perfectly on its own and together, the dish comes together beautifully. As many times as I’ve had this dish, it’d been a long time since I’d enjoyed like that. A must! The Hawaiian Fried Rice was a really nice surprise. The curry was light, not at all overpowering, which was important for a rice dish that already has a lot going on, packed with chicken, shrimp, pineapples, cashews, and veggies. A wonderful, comfort dish. The crispy rolls were as good as any you’d find elsewhere, but the wings were pretty special – crispy skin, tender meat, slathered in a sticky sweet and spicy sauce that begs you to lick your fingers. I may have just found my new Thai obsession.

Yumi Asian (on APB) – Menu with Prices – 425 Avalon Park S Blvd #200, Orlando

Four stars for great service, really good food made with fresh ingredients with layers of flavor. This new Asian place opened in my community! It is located right next to Chase Bank. There is parking available right in front. The restaurant is decorated with giant Asian murals that are beautiful. There is table service, I believe there are at least 8 tables and a sushi bar with stools. Greeted nicely, patiently answered all my questions, specifically about the difference between lo mein and udon noodles, she explained it’sthe noodles, lo mein noodles are more sticky & udon are bigger. I also asked about a dish I saw on the Yelp page, she said it was Mandarin chicken, I will be back for that. My takeout order: Sesame chicken with plain fried rice Chicken Udon Noodles Beef Lo Mein We were sceptical because we are accustomed to darker noodles, but let me tell you, they are terrific. The Udon Noodles are bigger, rounder then lo mein, they must be making them fresh, because they are light and They noodles had mushrooms, bean sprouts, chicken and eggs! The sauce was layered, flavorful, tasty. The Beef Lo Mein noodles, although, paler than what we are accustomed to, were fresh, had a savory/sweet flavors and the beef was tender and delicious. The sesame chicken, yummy, lightly breaded, light sprinkle of sesame seeds, tasty and fried rice, light and flavorful. I will definitely try this place again, this time eating in the restaurant.

Boulder Pho – Menu with Prices – 2855 28th St, Boulder

Dad and I had a craving for Vietnamese after a long hike in the mountains. I love a good vermicelli bowl (or “grilled noodle bowl” per the menu) so given Boulder Pho’s ratings decided to try. Suffice to say, I wouldn’t recommend. Service: Sat immediately, but had to flag down for the order. Given how not busy it was, the food took awhile. Received apps and dinner all at once, had to go up to the counter to ask where our drinks were (a beer and tea). We received the drinks well after the food arrived, and were charged for everything. Fine, but it’s weird to get a pot of tea after sitting for a half hour with water and after the food arrives. Never got checked on after the food was delivered. Went to the counter to pay, waited to pay while he cleaned tables, sat a couple. Another party arrived, he still didn’t ring me up, he chose to greet the new people, wash tables, seat them. This happened three times with new people arriving and me trying to pay. A note to the waiter: the person about to pay is about to tip. I shouldn’t wait at your counter for 15 minutes to do so. Food: If you like spaghetti noodles chopped into one inch pieces as “vermicelli noodles” then sure. Never have I had my noodles chopped into pieces. It was exceedingly difficult to eat with chopsticks. The noodles were also about spaghetti thickness, which was strange. Not a deal-breaker overall, but I think of this dish as a delicate noodle dish. The pork in the bowl was actually thin sliced pork, fried/charred to oblivion, and not cut properly. You’d pick up one bit of pork and get the entire thing connected by tendon. Not appetizing, and again, not made for chopsticks. The egg roll on top was the saving grace. Not remarkable, but had flavor. Overall the ‘noodle bowl’ was bland / burnt when you could get a bite. We also got the spring rolls. They were again filled with this spaghetti noodle. The sauce was the best part. Maybe their pho is the signature, but the service could use a LOT of work, and the noodle bowls should be removed from the menu.
