The Great Glendale Donut Derby continues with Mr. Goods entering the fray. This unit is owned and donuted by a beautiful Chinese couple who know and appreciate that Donuts are an American phenomena. A phenomena that they obviously support with their experience and labors. i bought a dozen of mixed glazed and cake and they went quickly to the secret donut tasting society to which i belong. After tallying all the scores: we seem to unbelievably have a 3 way tie! So it’s Mr Good, Fresh Donuts and Yum Yum in a dead heat. Bear in mind that all 3 are down home, non-fussy doughnut emporiums: no added bacon or strawberry glaze. nothing fancy. These businesses make doughnuts for the masses: doughnuts that you would grab and take to work to make it seem that you are cool and willing to shell out some bucks for your fellow slaves to the Man. In a dream i thought: how did donuts happen? why am i even doing this donut derby? what would my parents say if they knew? Does God like Donuts? So as with most things that are bad for you: Doughnuts seem to have been invented by the Dutch. From Wiki: The Dutch Doughnut. Records show that the Dutch were making olykoeks, or “oil cakes,” as early as the mid 19th century. These early doughnuts were simply balls of cake fried in pork fat until golden brown. If i had to guess i would have thought that doughnuts were from Italy as in dough fried in oil as in Flippers which is Pizza dough fried in oil and dusted with cinnamon sugar. Ok. So we have a 3 way tie in our doughnut derby. Remember that this derby is limited to d shops currently producing in Glendale. More later. My friends are loving this derby btw in that they have become the beneficiaries of most of the dozen donuts. i do try a bit (seriously!) of each variety . there is no way i am eating a dozen doughnuts myself. My 600 lb Life much?? Besides i don’t think that Tom Ford makes size 6X.

The Jelly Donut – Menu with Prices – 443 Dutton Ave, Santa Rosa

Doughnuts that you can get at anytime of day or night… magic to your ears right? This place comes in clutch after a late night of drinking. Bar closes, youre craving something bad, dont feel like going to shari’s or dennys… DOUGHNUTS !!!! This place kind of specailizes in their blueberry cake doughnuts, which are very good considering im not the biggest cake doughnut fan. They taste like blueberry pancakes. Reasons why im giving them a three is because: 1) they only take cash… they have an ATM in house, however, its always down anytime ive ever gone in there, so getting a friend that has cash to spot me or running across the street to the nearest Atm sort of sucks considering the extra $3 charge to use the ATM just made a $1 doughnut into a $4 doughnut ( or $8.75 dozen into an $11.75 dozen) 2) same as the atm, the bathroom is always out of service , as i mentioned above, after a drunken mission to get doughnuts, one might have to expell once arrived, not at the jelly doughnut 3) ive only been here late night, so this only applies to that timeframe, but, selection is somewhat limited. I prefer risen doughnuts opposed to cake, most of their doughnuts seem to be cake. I love plain glazed, sugar, and straight up doughnut holes, but it seems like they never have them when my friends and i decide to stumble in… less maple cakes that noone orders and more plain risen glazed!!!!

Bon Ton Doughnuts – Menu with Prices – 1225 Belt Line Rd #14, Garland

I have been going to Bon Ton Doughnuts since I was a little kid. While I have grown up and lived other places, bon ton is still my favorite doughnut shop. My go-to’s are the chocolate cake sprinkle and a dozen donut holes but everything is pretty good. Definitely get a kolache if you love them and try the frosted sprinkle donut holes if you want something different. ?

Donut Factory – Menu with Prices – 803 S Mountain Ave, Ontario

Ok.. This place seriously has the best & freshly made donuts I’ve ever tasted! First of all, I was neverrr a fan of cake donuts growing up. In fact, I’ve tried many from all over and every cake I’ve tried were always on the DRY side, so I started to steer clear of them, until my sister brought home a dozen from her usual spot “The Donut Factory. ” I take a look inside and think, “Ewww.. what’s up with all these YUCKY CAKE donuts she picked?!? She goes on to say, that they’re her absolute favorite and to just shaddap and try one. Well, I pick a chocolate cake, chocolate frosting with nuts on top and to my huge surprise, couldn’t believe my taste buds!! This chocolate cake tasted absolutely AMAZINGGGG!! So fresh! So cake like! So yummyyy!! Omgosh! I am now a fan of cake donuts BUT, they must be from The Donut Factory lol!!! My sister continues to get her dozen donuts every now and again and I’ve gone with her a couple times. It’s family owned and the mother & daughter that serve us are so sweet and kind! Always greeting every customer as they come in, with big smiles and generous to place extra donuts in our box and/or bags every time we’ve gone. So, I can still eat glazed and what not, but if it’s from The Donut Factory, all I want are their cake donuts lol!! Thanks for my new addiction! :p

Sweet Donuts – Menu with Prices – 800 E Arapaho Rd #112a, Richardson

I was up early and it would be hours until lunch so I needed something to tie me over until lunch. This place was on my way and I stopped to check it out. It’s a donut hole-in-the-wall place as most mom and pop donut shops are. The guy behind the counter is stoic. It was relatively late and there wasn’t a huge selection. Normally I get a buttermilk (cake) donut, but it looked like they were out. I instead, got two glazed donuts. The donuts themselves were pretty good. Average to above average. The icing was still moist, enough that it didn’t fall off when you bit into the donut, but not so moist that it stuck to everything (other than the donut). I could have used the donut just fried a little more to make it more crisp, but that’s getting a little nit-picky. At $.65 each, that’s $1.41 out the door for two glazed donuts. Yes, I got three free donut holes, but that’s a relatively expensive donut. I can get cake donuts at other places for $.75 and I think that’s verging into the high side. Glazed donuts should be closer to $.50. I know what you’re thinking, “What’s $.15, dude?” It’s not that it’s just $.15, it’s that it’s 30% more than what I would expect to pay. I probably won’t come back here when there are better donut places with a better selection for better prices that are nearby.

Hole In One Donuts – Menu with Prices – 14406 N Florida Ave, Tampa

Ah …the beauty of the donut ( not “doughnut” but donut as some of our friends from Great Britain like to spell), often ruined by one of two factors. These include the sawdust donut (cheapening an already simplified recipe and jacking up the price) or the hipster donut ( adding everything from kale to Red Vines on a donut and in the process, sapping the joy out of a wonderful food all for the sake of being “ironic”). At Hole in One Donuts we return to the basics. Sure they have some specials on their menu ( try the glazed croissants) but overall no overpriced under flavored junk. This is a first rate donut shop. From the apple fritters to the plain cake ( my personal favorite) they have a terrific and wonderful selection of donuts which are creative, but not reaching. Hole in One is also the perfect gift for a friend who is down in the dumps or maybe went the extra mile for you. Their boxes say “You deserve a Donut!” on them. And oh the joy, the bliss of being able to cram large bites of warm, fried, wonderful dough past your tastebuds buds and into your belly. It’s the best in Tampa!

Bigwig Donuts – Menu with Prices – 111 Liberty St NE, Salem

As a donut lover I was hesitant to try an establishment that ONLY serves gluten free vegan donuts. My hesitations were not unwarranted…Upon looking over the counter my first impression was they’re cutting corners. The donut holes are “baked” using a device akin to an easy bake oven for children. I ordered a dozen, two of each flavor. The chocolate and chocolate matcha tasted like a Duncan Hines GF brownie mix. The base or dough severely lacked flavor, it was very bland. I wouldn’t even call it dough, it was more cake like. The most flavorful was the lemon poppyseed. But still, the insides of the donuts were quite mushy. I think it’s fantastic GF and vegan individuals have a dedicated donut spot, however, it comes at cost. That cost is the overall quality and taste. I’m certain if the donuts were fried or even baked in a traditional oven you would get a much more quality product without the mushy damp centers. But I guess you get what you pay for? Using 13 dollar donut cooking devices? I’ll try again in the near future to update my review.

Little Dutch Bakery – Menu with Prices – 7611 Hamilton Ave, Cincinnati

They have the best donuts in the city of Cincinnati. They’re better than buskens, graters, dunken or any other name brand donut I’ve had. They have the fluffiest softest donuts with just the right amount of glaze. The perfect donuts are made by Little dutch bakery on Hamilton ave in mt.healthy. and there only $1 dollar. I leave out for work in the morning 3o minutes early on the days I crave these donuts. They are soooo good. Proceed with caution, they are highly addictive melt in your mouth flavorful donuts. Not your average donut. Bless the hands that make these donuts so good.

Chicago donuts – Menu with Prices – 3233 E Harry St, Wichita

If there are donut purists out there, they might scoff at me saying that I prefer cake donuts over their yeasty brethren, but I can’t help it – when it comes to fried dough, I like the kind that gets its leavening from chemicals rather than live microorganisms. Plus, they stay fresher longer, which is a plus when they are sitting on my counter and taunting me all day to eat them. They’re not located in the better part of Harry, but they’re still plenty popular, and at $.80/per, it’s easy to get their special (a dozen and a coffee for $7.something) for the office, while keeping the coffee for you. It looked like most of the business was getting their treats to go, which is just as well considering the atmosphere of the place was a bit lacking. Donut Whole they are not, but I can’t say that I didn’t enjoy their red velvet donut.

ChuChu Donuts – Menu with Prices – 580 SW 9th St #116, Des Moines

Chu Chu donuts is easily my favorite donut spot in the Des Moines area. We were sad when they closed in Ankeny, but were happy to know they reopened downtown. They have a solid selection of classic donut favorites and some cereal or bacon donuts to fit the more decadent current trend as well. The donuts never disappoint whether it is the subtly sweet cake donut or the traditional puffed dough, they are the perfect texture and flavor. While I like a plain donut, the frosted or glazed donuts are just as good. While the distance makes it more of a rare occasion, I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

Rise + Roast Menu with Prices 401 Eubank Blvd SE Suite E, Albuquerque

Updated review (5/17/19): I failed to mention that there is a drive-tru for your convenience as well. I went back to try the cake doughnut and the coffee. They were very tasty. I was particularly picky about coffee but the coffee here met my expectation. I ordered a black coffee. The black coffee tasted nutty and sweet and less acidic because it did not have any sourness in it. The cake doughnut was a great accompaniment to the coffee. Though they do not offer regular cake doughnut, I went to the frosted strawberry cake. The texture of the doughnut was fresh, soft and moist. First visit (5/11/19) It’s my first time visiting Rise + Roast. I like the inside of the place – specious and cozy. Although they were not busy, I was greeted with a smiley face as I walked in, which was nice. As for the doughnut selections, a few options were missing from the case because I was there later in the afternoon. Since it’s mother’s day, they have special shaped doughnuts – MOM – which are very cute. I told the person who took my order that it was my first time here so I wanted some recommendations. The other server and he told me that they would eat everything there, which I took this as a good sign for the quality of their products. I ended with a regular doughnut and a Bavarian cream filled doughnut. I came back home to see how they packed the doughnuts, they were separated by wax papers. Good job!! The texture of these doughnuts was very satisfying – chewy but soft. The taste was very sophisticated. The Bavarian cream might be my favorite because the contrast of sweet cream and bitter flavor of chocolate. I have to go back to try their glazed doughnuts and coffee soon.

Fiction Donuts – Menu with Prices – 1835 US HIGHWAY 1 SOUTH, #139, St. Augustine

FICTION PRICING 1st visit, last visit. Party of 5 w/three young children. Small shop and today they were not customer focused, read experience below. The raised donuts we rated a 3.5 out of 5 & cake donuts 2 out of 5…heavy cake dough. We also ordered a very large cinnamon bun $5, we rate a 3 out of 5. When ordering we chose the “Fiction Dozen a mix of 6 yeast & 6 cake donuts. After all 5 of us, selecting 7 yeast & 5 cake we were told, ” you have chosen 7 yeast but it’s no problem we can do that”. Rather than us reducing the raised donut quantity we proceeded to check out. The order total was $5 higher than the menu board pricing and when asked “why?” the reply was, “you ordered 7 yeast & a maple bacon so the price is higher for those”. Essentially we were charged the individual donut price for each donut vs the board posted highest yeast per dozen price. We paid the higher total price and departed to avoid any further discussion considering we had young children with us. Fiction should clearly post their pricing exceptions or inform its customers during the donut selection process, none of which occurred on this visit, as a result we will not be patronizing Fiction (Pricing) again.

Shipley Do-Nuts – Menu with Prices – 6362 De Zavala Rd #101, San Antonio

Stopped in this morning for a quick breakfast. Place was nice and clean. My kiddo and husband said the kolache’s were amazing. The donuts were fresh made. I had the Boston cream donut and enjoyed it a lot. my daughter had the vanilla sprinkled donut and a strawberry sprinkle doughnut but preferred the vanilla sprinkled donut. The gentleman at the counter was very polite he even brought out some fresh hot glazed donuts for us to try. They also had cake donuts but we did not try them. Recommend you to try it.
