Sports bar vibe – good TVs – average (size, placement, quantity) Food – typical bar fare Beers – excellent choices Service – excellent Overall – you decide

Gert’s Grille – Menu with Prices – 12018 College Blvd, Overland Park

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. It is a small sports bar type place and I expected typical sports bar food. I got the grilled PB&J and it was anything but typical. The portion size was large and I was only able to eat half the sandwich, which worked out because everyone else with me wanted to try it since it looked so good. We all still talk about how amazing that sandwich was. The only downside of this place is that since it is so small, the tables and booths are very close together and it was very loud with all the people talking and TVs going.

Cactus Cantina Downtown Pensacola – Menu with Prices – 22 S Palafox St, Pensacola

….Too many restaurant choices are now on Palafox St. I remember back in the day when there were like 2 places to choose from after getting your drink on. Hot dogs or Pizza, and those 2 choices depended on how buzzed I was. If I was only so-so buzzed, I would go for the hot dog. For real for real buzzed, pizza. My how things have changed. Now, there’s like way too many choices from sushi, to pho, to burgers, to pasta, etc, and I dont like change. Add Mexican food now to the list. Im glad there is now a spot where I can get a chimichanga, or a burrito. Cactus cantina is, what it is. An average spot, serving average food, at average prices. Remember, you’re in Pensacola, where everything and everyone is average. The hottest guy in town looks like Paul Rudd, I love Paul Rudd, but by Hollywood standards, he’s no Brad Pitt. He’s average. Average is not bad. Like Cactus Cantina. Women. Hottest chick in Pensacola looks like Jennifer Aniston. Hey, I like Rachel Green. Average tho. Average like the Bloody Mary, the quesadilla, and queso dip I had here. Nothing wrong with Jen Aniston. She fcuked Brad Pitt for pete’s sake. Heck, this review is probably average. Average is Good.

Barringers Tavern (re-established 2019) – Menu with Prices – 2535 S Meridian St, Indianapolis

Barringer’s tavern was a staple of the near south side for ages. When they announced a sale and reopening of “Barringer’s 2.0”, I was thrilled. The new Barringer’s seems to be still trying to find what it wants to be. They definitely have the neighborhood bar vibe down. They have a limited food menu with the promise of “more to come”. I had a tenderloin sandwich that teetered on being good but was very greasy. The onion rings I had were standard fare and less greasy. These were both second choices as my first choices were out. I think they will find their way and make it through the new restaurant jitters. I Will give them a few weeks and then see how things have progressed. There is great potential in those old walls.

Hop Street Lounge – Menu with Prices – 7215 E 22nd St Suite 101, Tucson

The place is really nice and has a great vibe. I tried the beer flights but was not impressed by any of my choices. I chose all the sours, cider, fruit beer, and a few pale ales. I am not a big beer drinker so I thought my choices would be okay but I didn’t love any of them. Out of all my choices I liked the rose cider the most but still it wasn’t the best. I will be back to try the wine and some of the beers in the fridges they have. Its a really nice place but the beer flights just didn’t do it for me.

Captain Jack’s Bar – Menu with Prices – 140 N 12th St, Lincoln

Captain Jack’s is home to the Lincoln Chapter of the American Outlaws (Supporters of US Soccer). Come check out all of the US Men’s/Women’s soccer games with fellow soccer fans. It is easy to miss even though it is in the heart of downtown Lincoln. It is located next to the Starbucks and Cliff’s Smoke Shop. They have a full service bar but they do not serve food. On your average day, it can be your typical sports bar with a mild crowd noise. On game days, expect a packed house and get rowdy (in a good way). Get to the bar early if you want to have a seat because it is not a large bar. The service is always friendly and quick.

Salt & Pepper Italian Bistro & Pizza – Menu with Prices – 486 Royer Dr #102, Lancaster

I really expected an average meal, good, but not special. I was pleasantly surprised by an excellent dinner. I order spaghetti and meatsauce at almost every Italian restaurant I visit, and this was by far one of the best. The meat sauce is great. The garlic knots are also exceptional…fresh baked, served with homemade dipping sauce. My husband had the meatball sub, which is prepared on a homemade sub roll and he thought was delicious. Quantity of food is also above average with plenty leftover for a second meal and the price is reasonable. Waitress was friendly and good. Canâ??t say enough good things about this place.

Basic City Beer Co. Southside RVA – Menu with Prices – 212 W 6th St, Richmond

My son and I decided to give Basic City Beer a try. Just down the street from Legends Brewery it offers a fine selection of beers. We each had a flight and shared the eight beers. Itâ??s very rare that all eight were good and drinkable. We tried Grins Casket stout (aged in Silverback Distillery rye barrels), Gringo a Mexican Mole stout, Olde Manchester Ale, Benjiclaus, Our Daily Pils, a coffee porter, and a lager and stout whose names I canâ??t remember. It was hard to decide which one to order. The bar area is large with many places to sit and talk or watch sports. There is also an activity area that had a large projection TV, pool tables, ping pong tables, and cornhole. Go visit and have a good time. We will go back.

Five Ten Food Mart Menu with Prices 8339 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria

This restaurant has an unusual & amusing concept: Latino (with a specialization in Salvadorean) and Vietnamese food under the same roof. It is NOT fusion, as the dishes are distinct and always plated separately. However I love that this way there’s a little something for everybody. Vibe of this restaurant is strange, it looks like at one point in time it was a standalone American fast food restaurant or diner, and it was converted into this concept. You order and pay at the counter first, then sit down and they bring you your food. Clientele was a lot of local military folk, presumably from Ft Belvoir. *Pupusa: We ordered the pork & cheese. Portion size and taste were on par with this area, they’re “almost” close to the best I’ve tried. Nice corn flavor of the dough. You will not be disappointed. *Chicharrones Entomatados: Fat chunks of pork along with a simmered tomato sauce. This was a really lovely dish that although is Latino, it resembles the way Vietnamese people simmer their tomato stews (we call it st cà chua). Flavor is beautifully balanced between salty, sweet, and savory. Quantity is excellent for the price. *Beef Medium Rare (P1): FYI I’m SUPER picky when it comes to pho because I swear by home-made recipes which I grew up with in my family, and I’m not some sell-out overseas-Vietnamese who admires American pho over the kind at restaurants in Vietnam. That said, 5 Ten did a good enough job with the pho here given the price, and for this area which is a black hole of mediocre overpriced pho. They charge $8.99 for small and $9.99 for large which is similar to local competition. Broth definitely got more delicious and fragrant as I let the herbs soak in, noodles were the typical dried and thin-width kind that you find at USA restaurants, meat portion was average. While the vibe and authenticity of cuisine are not the best in the area, the taste still hits the spot. I really admire this place for the bi-cultural food combination, as well as the very friendly counter service (some of the friendliest I’ve ever seen at Vietnamese American restaurants). Come support these little guys!

The Thirsty Topher – Menu with Prices – 601 Virginia Dr, Orlando

Sweet little neighborhood pub. Lots of local brews to choose from. Bartender, big Rick, was very helpful. He gave great recommendations. Service was excellent. I wanted to beers, but only wanted to have one beer. He allowed me to have half of each beer. That was perfect. It’s a little warm inside, they’re not running their air-conditioning low or they don’t have any. It looks like there’s a cute little patio outside. There is a small parking lot behind, so you don’t have to park on the street. They have draft beers and bottled beers and canned beers. So there’s something for everyone. The inside decor is really neat. The bar is live edge wood, so beautiful. Casual place to drop by and have a beer or two with friends. I’ll be back to try something else from their dark beers selection. But I did enjoy the putting and the 10 fiddy.

DV?s Cork and Tap – Menu with Prices – 560 Greenbrier Dr Suite 105, Oceanside

I really have no idea what’s with the cork and tap, that’s like when your parents say you full name when their mad at you. It’s simply Dani P’s or just DP’s. The old GreenBriar, the old Hooligans. It’s still very much the same. Same set up, still the cheep beers, pool tables (refelted and bumpered of course), but the fact that they now carry a few dozen of San Diego’s famed craft beers is simply amazing. They still keep the military memorabilia, but have done away with the over the top Boston garb. All in all it’s much nicer. More pub than dive bar, more craft than sports bar and finally not a Boston bar. ATM inside, 3 pool tables and skeet ball as well. The lighting is better, not that old dingy style they used to have, though not quite sports bar esque. It’s still in the hood, average 1 cop car will pass by an hour and a dozen people will be walking form the local Bodega home. It’s a mixed bag of the usual locals, the drunks stumbling in off the street, but they have food, like pizza and veggies and a modern tap system. Whoa. The pizza is not half bad for when you just don’t want to walk across the street to Taco Bell. Juke box, tiny tiny non tabled area for live performances and dancing and freaking security believe it or not. It could still use a good clean every once in a while, but it’s one of those places that can also be intimidating. If anything be intimidated by the places that haven’t changed in a decade….case in point my old stomping grounds OMTI. I went there for the better part of a decade every Friday and it’s still the same. Interesting story is that before yelp I was using foursquare and before Hooligans had an account I used to get some nice laughs from people wondering why I’m checking into the Womans shelter next door. SMH good old ghetto Oceanside.

Hops and Props – Menu with Prices – 335 2nd Ave NE, St. Petersburg

Stopped into Hops and Props recently with a group of friends. We didn’t know what to expect but we loved it. there was construction in the area so it made it hard to get to but it was well worth the effort. It’s small and very quaint. The main attraction is the beers. They had an excellent selection of about 20 local craft beers on tap. The bartender was knowledgable about all the beers and more than willing to talk about them. If you’re a fan of craft beers and places for to talk to your friends while enjoying the, this is the place.

ReMix Asian Kitchen Menu with Prices 9450 Stockdale Hwy, Bakersfield

Remix quickly became my favorite fallback restaurant. In many ways, it feels like a place made just for me. They have many of my favorite foods: Japanese katsu curry, ramen, loco moco, and Korean saltado, among others. They have tasty craft sodas, a few good coffees, and a cheery setting in which to eat. Because of their placement within the medical center, there’s almost always parking available. Their prices are slightly high, but it feels worth it for the quality and quantity of the food they provide. There are just a few things keeping us from eating there more often. First, and it’s a minor point, but they serve their food with plastic silverware, which seems wasteful, so we prefer to bring our own utensils. Secondly, it feels like there are fewer healthy options than I would like. Perhaps the healthy options are there, but I get blinded by all my favorite calorie-filled meals. They have a constantly shifting menu which is displayed on a TV screen over the counter and on various pieces of paper posted on the wall. I would be happy if they’d organize it a bit better because I always feel like there are probably options that I’m missing just because I can’t find it amongst all the pieces of paper. But mostly, this place feels like home-away-from-home. Anytime we can’t decide on a place to eat, we always know that Remix is there and we’re almost always happy to go to remix. The food is always good; they have wifi; and we always leave full and happy. It’s our favorite restaurant in Bakersfield, and you should definitely try it out.
