Tasty and inexpensive ramen for the family. Before I begin, I should note that my kids eat sushi, spicy, and a variety of foods. If the kids with you only eat certain foods, this might not be the best place especially when they find out there’s seaweed on their food. My husband and I both ordered the Chicken Paikan ($11 each) and for the littles one order of the small (kids) rice and chicken ($5), and one side of edamame ($4) (because my kids will definitely eat the last two). I asked for an extra small bowl and split the rice and chicken between my boys. They immediately asked us to share our noodles. (Side note: you can get extra noodles added during dinner for $2-we didn’t need to, but we might now that our secret is out with the kids.) The noodles are perfect and the broth is even better. It is almost creamy, without having cream–maybe it’s miso? I have to be honest, I didn’t ask. The chicken, bean sprouts, seaweed all added flavor to the broth. They do include a soft boiled egg, which I just leave in the bowl because I like my eggs cooked well. I must be the only one because my 3-year-old requested a bite and I gave him half, then my 6-year old requested the other half of the egg. And just like that, my bowl was empty. $31 plus tax and tip for dinner for the four of us–yes please! And I just realized I didn’t mention service because I loved the food so much. The staff was friendly, quiet, and polite. I felt like a guest at someone’s home!

Blu Thai Food and Sushi – Menu with Prices – 215 E Walnut St, Des Moines

This is a cute little thai restaurant downtown! Great location and decent looking on the inside. However, I was a little disappointed with the food and service. We ordered the tom yum soup with chicken to start with. The broth was lovely, but that’s all the soup was. It was just a big bowl of broth, with maybe 7-8 small pieces of chicken, the sporadic mushroom, and far too many sliced onions thrown in there. For almost $10 for a large bowl, I kind of felt like I was getting cheated out of my money. We mentioned our disappointment to our waitress, but she just tried to dismiss our complaint and insist that our soup had 8 oz of chicken, which I seriously doubt, but I also did not have a scale to weigh out the chicken myself. I was a little annoyed with how she kept trying to deflect the criticism rather than relay our thoughts to their kitchen. I ordered the chicken drunken noodles, and it was alright. It was decent food, but nothing to write home about. The wide rice noodles were good, and there was a good variety of vegetables in my dish. I was pleasantly surprised that I was not cheated out of my chicken this time! I like how when you order, they ask you to choose your spice level on a scale of 1-5. I went for a 2, and found that to be just the right amount of spice. Another person in my group ordered a rice dish, but requested a spice level of 0 and asked for them to put the spice on the side. They did just that, and gave her a gigantic pot of chili oil on the side. The thing is, their chili oil has no distinct flavor other than burn-your-mouth-off hot. I tried a small amount and my mouth was on fire for a very long time afterwards. I do not recommend going this route for spice. I found this place to be pretty mediocre and would probably choose a different Thai place in DSM next time where I can get a little more bang for my buck!

Little Korea – Menu with Prices – 3354 S National Ave, Springfield

I’ve only been here once. The restaurant is relatively small, max occupancy of 49. From what I could tell, it seems like the biggest table accommodates up to 8 people. So if you’ve got 9 or more it doesn’t seem like you could all sit together. They’ve got entres here if you don’t want hotpot- but why come to a hot pot restaurant if you’re not gonna try hot pot??? But it’s still nice for people who come in a group and simply don’t feel like it. It seems to add a nice variety. They don’t have dessert yet but it’ll be coming soon. If you’ve never had hot pot they do a good job putting directions down. There’s a how to on the wall and in the menu. Pretty simple- just cook your veggies and meat in the broth and eat it with rice and their sauce- or by itself! The staff didn’t really ask us if we had any questions- or show us anything- but it’s probably because we’re asian. If you do hot pot you pick a broth, pick your protein, and pick two sauces. You get a veggie basket with Napa cabbage, carrots, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, bean sprouts, some clear noodles, and a bowl of rice. (Although typically you eat noodles with hot pot, but I guess that’s the style here). There are also a lot of add ons. If you want noodles instead of rice you’ll still have to get charged extra since noodles are extra. Everyone gets their own individual hot pot. Broth had good flavor, beef was good. Overall had a good first experience here. I’ll admit though, I wasn’t too crazy about it (this place just didn’t wow me). However, Would still encourage others to give this place a shot, they might really like it.

Four Sisters Grill Menu with Prices 3035 Clarendon Blvd, Arlington

First of let me tell you I’m from New Orleans which is where the holy land of Vietnamese food is at. Craving just thinking about New Orleans food where everything is good. Since living here in the northern Virginia area… nothing comes that close. I heard from locals that this place was good but with many failed advice, I was super hesitant. When you first enter, it’s a restaurant vibe with a fast food type of menu on a screen that feels like when you walk into a McDonald’s place. (Just felt like it cheapen the value of the food but the quality of the food is good!) I would recommend a lamented menu for customers when they first enter. Their Grilled Pork Banh mi is so good. The French bread was soft with the right amount of butter mayo and veggies. Pork was marinated flavorfully. Only 2 options for Pho. Chicken or Steak Beef. Steak Beef pho was good but the broth was a little to clear/light. Usually beef broth have a darker color. Prices was affordable. I think a regular pho bowl was $9.50 Banh mi $7ish Thai tea Side of egg rolls (added to my BF grilled pork rice noodle bowl) Grilled Pork with Rice Noodles (they add a lot of bean sprouts to fill the bowl so ask for none or very little) Total was $38 which is pretty affordable for the Clarendon area Side note: there was a paper sign that said the no longer serve smoothies.

Pho Bar And Grill – Menu with Prices – 750 Citadel Dr W Unit 2256, Colorado Springs

Oh my my my… where has this place been all my life?! One day boom there it is so. Just from walking by my daughter begged to go when we were finished school shopping. It’s hard (ok impossible) to say no to PHO so we went. First impression, everything was very clean and well decorated. It didn’t have the typical greasy feel that some others have in the area. The menu was simple yet had enough selection that everyone was happy! One thing that stood out on the menu was crawfish. I wanted to try some but I can barely make it through a bowl of pho so I saved that for next time. The service was great! Everyone was very friendly and our food came out fairly quickly (not too quickly though, you know sometimes you order something and you dang near almost finish your sentence in the order and the foods on the table… that food scares me…. lol) The food was de-licious!! Omg why did it have to be that good? Now every time I go to the mall I’m going to have to park on the other side of the mall so I don’t have to pass it or just know that we better account enough time to stop otherwise we will be eating and no Shopping will get done!! The broth was probably the best broth I’ve had in a few years and we are no strangers to PHO. My husband and kids and I go out in search of our pho fix a few times a month. The prices were well priced and I was extra impressed that they had a kids size pho for our 11 year old who can’t finish a regular size bowl. We found our new spot! I would definitely recommend checking this place out!!

ChaoDown Poki – Menu with Prices – 1950 Douglas Blvd #B-3, Roseville

I almost never write reviews but I really have to for this place. My daughters and I were visiting a friend in the area and she recommended this place for dinner before we headed back home. I hadn’t ever tried Poki but gave it a shot any way. This has been one of the best foods I’ve ever had hands down. It was refreshing and delicious especially on a hot, Sacramento day. The customer service was amazing. We came in and immediately were greated with smiling faces. The women who helped us was amazing and so patient with my kids. She happily explained to my daughter what everything was (there was a lot of toppings she hadn’t tried before) and even provided samples for some of them! I got the ChaoDown mix which was salmon and tuna mixed in a delicious sweet and spicy sauce, with white rice and a ton of delicious toppings like crab salad, edamame, broccoli, pickled radish and sesame seeds. There was so much to choose from but I didnt want to over load my bowl! My kids got a teriyaki chicken bowl and a shrimp bowl and they loved them! They surprisingly ate every bit, I didn’t have to push them to eat “one more bite”! They even had a chalk wall in the back that my kids happily enjoyed while I finished my dinner. The food was amazing but the customer service was out of the park! This place gets an 11/10 in my books and we will definitely be back next time we are in town!

El Coyote Ramen Bar – Menu with Prices – 1 W Victory Dr, Savannah

First ramen only bar in Savannah. I was really excited when I first heard about it because there are no dedicated ramen places in the area. Finally I got to try it on a Sunday late afternoon. The place is tiny but they have outdoor patio seating available. They have everything pre-made so basically they just need to put the bowl ingredients together. For the same reason, the service is fast and the people working are friendly. You can create your own bowl but I decided to get their speciality bowl – Chicken Shoyu. It was good, I liked how my broth tasted but there wasn’t enough broth in the bowl. I also got a side of Kimchi, which I decided to put in my bowl and it added more flavor to the broth. My friend got the Pork Tonkotsu but I liked mine better. The tonkotsu broth was lacking flavor. Overall, this place is average but they definitely have the potential to be better.

Qian Express Chinese Ramen House Menu with Prices 10660 NE 8th St, Bellevue

I read a review of Qian on another site and decided to check it out. So glad we did!! We took my father, who luckily was up for trying a new place. When we arrived we were immediately greeted and seated. Ordering was super easy and done via tablet-tho just one per table so we had to take turns looking at the menu. The menu design makes it really easy to customize your order to add or delete ingredients. Service was exceptional and friendly. Once seated we were immediately brought complimentary fried red chili with peanuts (not spicy) and pickled radish. There is also a jar of red chili on the table (spicy). Qian has a limited menu of 13 noodle dishes-both wet (in broth) and dry (with sauce but no broth). Apparently these are the most popular dishes at their Seattle location. Its a great selection but I hope they add more dishes, especially vegetarian options as there aren’t any now. Portions are good size. Everything we ordered was very tasty and was served steaming hot. Dad ordered the Braised lamb brisket with thin rice noodles which came in a broth. Both the lamb and broth were really flavorful. Hubs had the Qian Noodle. He said it was good, but reminded him a bit of a spicy Italian meat sauce. Tho I didn’t taste it so can’t comment on his analysis ? . I had the Marrow Bone Noodle with wheat noodles. I also added thick rice noodles for an extra cost- which sank to the bottom of my bowl and were slippery, so were hard to pick up with my chopsticks. The noodle broth was good not too salty& light flavor (I always prefer less salt because it can always be added but can’t be taken away). The marrow bones came separately in a bowl with a little bit of the marrow broth, which was a bit more flavorful. The marrow bones were good as well, but there was very little meat on them and no additional meat in the broth. So if you want meat, that’s an add on for an additional cost. The interior is striking, very clean and the food rating is Good. So yeah, go check it out.

Maui Express – Menu with Prices – 7702 Shawnee Mission Pkwy, Overland Park

Negative points if I could. This is one of the absolute worst plates of food I have ever bought hands down. I ordered the steak and chicken teriyaki bowl and a steak chipotle wrap. First off I asked for a recommendation and the young lady could not tell me anything. I asked what kind of noodles, rice or udon. She told me rice noodles. Also keep in mind I saw them take steak out the freezer and microwave it. Just fyi The steak was on The rack unwrapped and was not in a container and appeared to have frost all over it. The grill appeared to be turned off and none of the meat for my order was grilled. The meat even tasted microwaved. The noodles were spaghetti noodles, overcooked and the sauce was the consistency of broth. Oh and the veggies that appeared to be zucchini squash was actually cucumber! Such a let down and disappointment to Hawaiian cuisine I am sure. This place needs to close its doors.

Somerset Tap House – Menu with Prices – 2 Somerset St, Portland

So, i’ve often considered stopping into the Somerset Tap House while shopping at Whole Foods, but never had the time. Since the beloved Sumo tangerine is now stocked in store, I am at Whole Foods roughly once (sometimes twice) a day. Last Thursday night, after stocking up on 3 Sumos to get me through the next day, my husband and I decided to check out STH. Uh-oh, our 17 year old had already ordered a burrito bowl in the store! Crap! I walk in and asked the bartender if we can come in with prepared food from the store. NO PROBLEM!!! To say that this began a dinner experience with a staff that was crazy accommodating was an understatement. So, we settle into a very comfy table with the comfort on one side of a booth to check out the menu. There is live music playing; a super talented guitarist, taking requests! The menu is limited but interesting and prices seem reasonable. We finally settle on a dozen BBQ chicken wings, a burger and a salad with apples and blue cheese. When ordering, I spied someone else’s rosemary and parmesan fries and REALLY wanted some. Could I get a half order? NO PROBLEM!!! While waiting, we sunk into the velvet seat and quietly san along with the guitarist. When food arrived, it turned out that even people who have just eaten a burrito bowl, still have room for more. We all loved the wings, and honestly at $7 a dozen were absolutely worth it. My husband loved his burger. My salad accidentally came with chicken which was ok, but I had not chosen to add it on when ordering. NO PROBLEM!!! Keep the chicken, no extra charge! The “half” order of fries was HUGE and very, very good. Plenty for sharing! I am definitely rethinking this attaching-dinner-to-grocery-shopping-thing. This is a one-stop combo that is definitely worth considering!

Viet Xpress – Menu with Prices – 2121 98 St NW, Edmonton

This place just opened up and is across the parking lot of superstore, right next to burger priest. I’m not a huge pho fan – but my boyfriend loves it. We usually go to hung phat and although I don’t like pho all that much, I am a big fan of hot and sour/Tom yum kinds of soups. They didn’t have anything like this on their menu, so I decided to try the “southern Vietnamese noodles” which was said to come with bbq pork, shrimp, chicken, and squid. My boyfriend got the 6 colour vermicelli bowl and we shared an order of green onion cake. Appy – for green onion cake it was satisfactory. Not the best, but not the worst. For my main meal – the broth had no flavour and my bowl basically consisted of noodles with a few select pieces of meat and vegetables. Seriously. I’ll upload a photo of all the meat I could find in my soup before I started eating (note after taking the pictures and eating, I found 2 more pieces of meat – 1 small piece of chicken and 1 small piece of gristle pork). My boyfriends meal came with a half cup of fish sauce so I decided to throw that into my soup since it was flavourless. It definitely added some flavour, but still wasn’t good. I didn’t even eat half. My boyfriend said his vermicelli bowl was just okay. He pointed out that they barely gave him any meat and that a big portion of the meat they did give, was very fatty. It was also kind of pricey at $16.99 for what you got. Over all, we will not be going back there again. The amount of bbq pork in my “bbq pork” named soup was really laughable.

Kitakata Ramen Ban Nai – Irvine – Menu with Prices – 14370 Culver Dr SUITE C, Irvine

2 stars for the service. 5 stars for the food. Let’s start with the bad. Came in for dinner and ordered their karaage for the appetizer and the Kitakata Ramen with Egg with extra soup and noodle. We saw the server deliver what seems to be our order to the table in front of us. The table seemed confused and the order sat on their table. Assuming I’m wrong, I just kept my mouth shut and waited. Our chicken arrived and we enjoyed it while waiting for our bowl of ramen. I continued to stare at the bowl at the table in front of us until a server came and confirmed with the other table that they did not order three bowls of ramen. I watched the servers huddle to figure out who’s order they missed until they realized it was ours. Our food was probably sitting there for at least 15 minutes until they finally placed it on our table. They explained that they had to remake our extra broth and noodles since they got cold. We asked to have the ramen remade too, stating it got brought out to the wrong table at first. The server denied it until I explained to her I watched the entire thing go down. The last thing I ever want is a server lying to me. I’ve been on the other side and it’s not that hard to own up to your mistakes. We are willing to wait for our food too. I didn’t mind that our order had to be remade, I’d rather have it fresh rather than stale, sitting at a table. I would assume that Kitakata would want to serve their ramen in the best condition possible. I was surprised they would reserve a bowl that sat at another table then lie to a customer about it. Because of that, -3 stars. The good: The ramen holds up. Their shoyu broth is light but packed with flavor. The hard noodles are perfectly cooked, a balance between chewy, bouncy and soft. The soft boil egg is lightly marinated. The pork is a good balance between fatty and meaty. For the spice lover, definitely get green chilli paste on the side. As the other reviews mentioned, their fried chicken is to die for. They’re crunchy and juicy. The meat is tender and the dipping sauce was a perfect addition. Overall, I would come back to Kitakata for food but I’m not sure if I would venture to this one just from the bad experience I had with the servers.

Perry’s BBQ – Menu with Prices – 3800 US Hwy 98 N, Lakeland

When I started taking pictures the woman ringing me up said, “What are you doing?” I said, “I’m going to write a review on your food…” She didn’t look so enthusiatic. But, Lakeland isn’t huge on Yelp yet, I plan on changing that! This was my guys favorite spot, and he’s a Lakeland Native. I know it’s the portions he likes more than anything else, and I don’t blame him because their to-go containers are deeper and they pile on more. When I do Chinese I usually go towards beef or their fried chicken but I went with the regular choices: half bourbon half orange chicken woth half rice half noodle. Orange chicken: my LEAST favorite, I’ll never order it again. If my pieces weren’t so hard that my fork would puncture it, they were uber chewy or just all soggy bread period. The flavor was spot on though but that doesn’t say a lot if your chicken isn’t edible. Bourbon chicken: great flavor and juicy but they were holding back on the extra bourbon sauce that’s frequently requested by everyone. Fried rice: it lacked luster to me but the taste was again really good… **drum roll please** Lo mein: my absolute favorite! Great flavor and I’d make a trip here just to get them! The next time I’m in the mall I’ll get a side of noodles from here and get my other items from a new place or right next door.
