Luigi’s is quite simply a little old-school gem. The family bakery is located in an unassuming brick building, but as soon as you step out of your car you’ll smell the deliciousness going on inside. Crusty breads and rolls, home-made doughnuts, and a nice little selection of Italian pastries fill a glass-front cabinet adorned with handwritten signs describing the offerings and prices. Good luck choosing! Everything I’ve ever tried has been wonderful. And I love that the bread has about four ingredients–none of which are scary-sounding additives! Happily, the warmth doesn’t stop with the tasty baked goods; the service is just as special. I’ve never stopped there without a good story to tell when I got home. On one visit, I ordered doughnuts, a couple pastries, and two loaves of bread. When the gentleman behind the counter told me, “That’ll be $3.25,” I said, “That doesn’t seem right. It has to be more than that!” His smiling reply, “I own the place, it costs what I say it costs.” Yesterday, I slipped in a few minutes before closing and I ordered Italian bread. After a few moments of discussion, the ladies at the counter concluded that the two loaves left were “too hard” and offered me BOGO French bread instead–two loaves for $2! Luigi’s is not fancy or upscale, it’s just wonderful. Skip the supermarket bakery sometime and give them a try!

Addeo Bakery – Menu with Prices – 2352 Arthur Ave, The Bronx

Small bakery in the Bronx. We read reviews for the bakeries in the area and it seemed like this might be the best one to pick up some bread for dinner. My inlaws love fresh bread and cheese and I knew they would appreciate good fresh baked bread. When you look in the window you see a bunch of different loaves of bread. It makes it hard to choose. We went with three. They are all so delicious. Like seriously some of the best bread I have ever eaten. I wasn’t alone, my wife’s whole family loved this bread and raved about it. I have only eaten them with butter but I intend on making garlic bread with one loaf and grilled cheeses and French toast tomorrow with the leftover bread. The lady working inside was super nice. I asked her for a recommendation and she showed me what most people buy there. It was one of the three that I was selecting. This place is a must if you are in the area and are looking for killer Italian bread. All three loaves cost $10 which was totally worth it. The loaves of bread are really big. This bakery also smells amazing. There is metered parking all around so your best bet is to drive up to the bakery and just look for parking.

Oakwood Baking Co – Menu with Prices – 585 S Waring St, Detroit

Most people who live in the Detroit area have seen the big bakery bags with Oakwood plastered up the side. Some of you may have even got some fresh once or twice. I have purchased these also and they pale in comparison to what that bread is suppose to taste like. The normal Italian bread fresh out of the oven has a perfectly crispy outside and a fluffy chewy inside… the perfect italian bread. The bakery is a big house in a neighborhood near bayside (last area in southwest Detroit before you reach Melvindale). The area is a bit sketchy, but for good bread, there isn’t much I won’t do. As soon as you step out of your car you realize how blessed this small city block is. To walk out of your house every morning only to be greeted by the most wonderful smell of bread must be heaven! Walking into the bakery can be a little confusing. My first time my girlfriend and I nearly gave our selves the full tour before finding any employees. The man who normally helps you is a 50 somethings Italian man with a very very thick accent. There is not much to place though, nothing to browse through, they only make a few types of bread here. Just pick up a few fresh loaves and be on your way. I recommend buy 2 or 3 though because they are dirt cheap ($.50 for day old and 1:50 for fresh) and I have almost eaten a whole loaf on the ride home and I only live 5 minutes away. You have to go early to get the really fresh stuff.

Botto’s Bakery – Menu with Prices – 550 Washington Ave, Portland

I have lived in this town for 25 years and for 25 years I have been unable to find any bakery that makes the Italian pastries of my childhood. As a child in NYC, visits to the local bakery meant ricotta cheesecakes, pignoli nut and rainbow cookies and Sfogliatella. While I certainly dig the local italian-style frosted drop cookie, walking into Botto’s bakery was like coming home. How had I missed this for so long? With so much time to make up for, Botto’s has now become a regular part of my life. I ordered a platter of mini pastries for Thanksgiving-Fantastic I’ve stopped in several times for pistachio cookies-Check plus I’ve brought home the tiramisu twice-Excellent I stopped in once JUST for biscotti-Yes! Botto’s pignoli nut and rainbow cookies are so good that I am taking a break this year from making them myself for Christmas! Thank you Botto’s!

Palma’s Bakery – Menu with Prices – 3 Acton St, Worcester

Being Italian and growing up in East Boston had me surrounded by wonderful bakeries and amazing bread. When we moved out here last year I tried to find Italian bread but only found it in the supermarket – which is not italian bread. The Italian bakeries in Shrewsbury do not make bread, just pastry. I’d beg my mother to bring me bread from Boston but really wanted a place out here. My neighbor told me to try Palma’s so we did and we are hooked. The bread is amazing but so are the sandwiches and cold cuts. It instantly reminded me of home, especially because we got the bread right out of the oven. It was so hot they couldn’t cut it and all the way home it smelled amazing. It was perfect. The Italian sub was great too and on a freshky baked roll. I’m so happy to have good Italian bread again – along with the amazing sandwiches.

Reunion Bread Co / Bakery – Menu with Prices – 3350 Brighton Blvd #140, Denver

Reunion Bread was recently nominated as one of Bon Appetit’s top 50 restaurants in 2019 and they wholeheartedly deserve it! The Source is kind of a confusing place to navigate. Basically, one building existed where Reunion Bread and Acorn and a couple other places were and then a hotel was built right by it and so they connected the building to the hotel and now the entire thing is called The Source. The hotel has a bar on the top floor and some other shops, but where you really want to go is Reunion Bread, which is this super small little bakery shop next to Acorn. Just follow the aroma of delicious bread and baked goods! When my friend and I went, we were unable to get there much before closing, which meant there was little to nothing left other than a few loaves of baked bread. I pretty much expected all of the items to be gone, so I wasn’t upset about it, but so relieved to find out that there were just a few loaves left. Even that last remaining loaves were unbelievable. I really wanted to try their rye bread anyway (because I had heard it was amazing) and the owner, who greeted us, was so kind and generous – offered us a chunk of the rye. The smell of the rye, even before eating it, is so intense. The bread itself is soft, and chewy, yet the outside is crunchy and crackles. It has a touch of sour, with earthy, carway-type, deep flavor. I immediately bought a loaf (or two!). The owner let us know that we should come back for the pastries, which are apparently phenomenal and that we should arrive before 9am or 10am to get any, especially since their recent fame in Bon Appetit. The owner was so kind and generous and chatted with us for a bit about how he makes the bread and the types of flour he uses. Overall, Reunion Bakery has great bread (I also tried and purchase the last white loaf) and I can’t wait to go back for more!

Portland French Bakery – Menu with Prices – 6840 N Marine Dr, Portland

I discovered Portland French Bakery when I lived in Portland and was eating at a fancy dancy restaurant downtown. They were serving some phenomenal Potato Rosemary Bread dipped in balsamic vinegar and olive oil. I love bread, almost any way you slice it.. but this bread.. was AMAZING. After inquiring with the server I found out they did not make their own bread, but instead got it from Portland French Bakery. I contacted the bakery and found out although they are wholesalers, they WILL sell to the public at will call for retail orders. So over the years every time I have bag space and I am making a trip up I’ll pick up a few (8) loaves of bread and bring it down to me. They come par-baked and are super moist and delicious. If you have a restaurant in the area and are looking for some pre-dinner appetizers that your guests WILL come back for (other than your food), try to find something at this bakery. They will not disappoint. I brought loaves back this most recent trip and the people I bought them for are asking when I can get them more! PS – Cash/check for retail pick up and order in advance ? Rosemary Pototato is # 5794.

Bimbo Bakeries USA – Menu with Prices – 5050 E Evans Ave, Denver

I love these little bakery-adjacent outlet stores. This one will give you a free “loaf of bread” with your first purchase. You will also get a free “loaf of bread” with every $10 spent. In case you’re not getting enough free bread, you will also be given a punch card, which entitles you to TWO free loaves of bread after you spend $40 (“punches” are in 8 – $1, 10 – $2, and 4 – $3 increments so you’re basically guaranteed to get the full value of each purchase recorded on the card). “Loaf of bread” is anything off a rack by the door that, on my visit, had bread, buns (hamburger and hot dog), and english muffins. There’s a huge variety of products available. 3 for $5 Thomas bagels. $2 loaves of good, dense, whole grain & seed bread. $1.50 potato buns. Plus a huge variety of desserts and snack cakes and more breads and buns and flats and granolas and seeds… as well as some non-bakery items like jellies, drinks, takis, condiments, and jerky.

Bakehouse On King – Menu with Prices – 16 W King St, Lancaster

First visit and not my last! I stopped in shortly before closing time and all but two or three loaves of bread were left! Today I tried the ham & gruyère croissant. The croissant was warm, flakey, and soft and chewy on the inside. The ham is rolled through the center of the croissant, which prevents you from getting a piece in every bite. The gruyère compliments the ham well. I’m looking forward to trying the bread and pastries.

Bakery Recording Studio – Menu with Prices – 3844 Clark Rd SE, Cedar Rapids

I really wish I knew about The Bakery sooner! If you love pastries and tacos – this is your place! The inside of the building is purely functional with the bakery/ordering counter on one side and a small dining room on the other. The options are endless when it comes to the fresh pastries offered and all of them are an incredible value! Here’s just an example of what they have: Concha Elephant Ear Berry Turnovers Pecan rolls Giant 2lb cinnamon roll Croissant Various breads Pie Cakes They don’t have many cookie options, but have a small section of pie and cake by the slice. All of the pastries/treats ranged from $0.65-$5! But wait – there’s more! The Bakery also offers a small menu of Mexican classics including burritos and tacos all on homemade flour tortillas! You can even buy a dozen flour tortillas to take home with you (and you definitely want to do this!) I ordered two street style tacos and recommend the carnitas – they were delicious! The Bakery is a hidden gem that is not to be missed! Bring $10 and walk away with a taco lunch and a few amazing pastries!

Don Panchos Bakery – Menu with Prices – 140 Cesar Chavez St, St Paul

Had I known what an ice rink the roads were, I might have passed on the pastries today, but I didn’t and either did the droves of cars at the bakery. My parents gave me a coupon for $5.00 off @ Don Panchos. I think they thought I had purchased the croissants I brought them previously from Don Panchos, when in fact they were from Trung Nam. This is cute, and what looks to be family run bakery over in the Del Sol district. They have cases of freshly baked, inviting pastries and cakes. I love the smell of bakeries. They were bringing pans of fresh made loaves of french bread and dumping into a bin in the front. I wasn’t clear on whether or not I should help myself, so I asked and the young boy pointed me to the baskets sitting on the counter. I wasn’t too jazzed about using those- they looked kind of dirty, so I just lined it with some of the bakery tissue paper, took the tongs and purchased the following: – 3 churros which were nothing spectacular. -2 plain croissants which were ok. A little heavy and not light and fluffy like Trung Nam -1 cream cheese (I think) croissant which was delicious – 2 sugar donuts – chocolate filled empanada and something that looked like a biscuit. Not quite sure about that thing yet. I’ll have J try that one. Most of the items are labeled w/ prices. For all that with coupon it came to only $5.75 which was pretty cheap. Glad I tried it, but honestly I think I’ll have to stick to the heavenly croissants at Trung Nam.. This place is worth a visit though.

Jimenez Bakery – Menu with Prices – 1915 Dutton Ave, Waco

One of the best bakeries in Waco, if not THE best. There was a large selection of Mexican sweet bread, as well as ginger pigs, pastries, and other assorted goodies. Large bin of fresh bread. (I watched it come out of the oven!) Most of the offerings are sweet, however you will find some options like regular loaves of bread. The Concha as well as a few of the sugar breads are dry, I recommend eating those with your favorite beverage, like coffee or milk. Everything was really cheap, each pastry ranges from .50 cents each to .75 each. I’m fairly certain everything is .50 cents unless otherwise noted. Oh, and another thing. The bakery IS cash-only, so make sure to bring at least 10 dollars. Trust me, you can get a lot with that 10 dollars.
