My wife was reluctant to go check out the Louisiana Crab Shack. Always listen to your lovely wife. * * * At a Cajun seafood place, you care primarily about the steamed seafood in a bag with cajun spices and the fried seafood. I am on a health kick, so I had my fried shrimp on top of a salad. I also had gumbo to check for Louisiana bona fides. The love of my life had salmon with a cajun topping. * * * Poetic justice ruled. My wife had the best dish of the three. Her salmon was good on its own and had a savory not-at-all spicy sauce on top heavy on onions and cooked down vegetables. She gave a big thumbs up. I did not do as well. The gumbo was okay. The fried shrimp on my salad began to leave a bad taste in my mouth after about the sixth shrimp. The bad taste persisted for about fifteen minutes after we left the restaurant. The shrimp themselves were normal. No thrills there but no problems either. I think there was something not great involved in the frying. * * * The seafood in a bag may be wonderful. I can’t say. But I get a lot of cajun seafood in College Station. In those places, the bag food is marvelous and so is the frying. This place may settle down over time. I reviewed it when they were only four weeks old. The new waiter was struggling with the computer used for the orders. A new cook may have been struggling with the fryer. * * * I doubt however, I will be going back soon. I will be eating in all the places my wife wants to eat For about the next five hundred years.

A J’s Famous Seafood & PO Boys – Menu with Prices – 2100 Roswell Rd # 2148, Marietta

I am not sure what is “Famous” about AJ’s Seafood and PoBoys. I ordered the Shrimp PoBoy along with a side of Red, Beans & Rice. I also tried the chicken and sausage Gumbo. Having lived in Louisiana for over 20 years, I know what good Cajun food should taste like and this ain’t it. The Shrimp Poboy was mediocre at best. It was almost there, but not quite. The seasoning on the shrimp was a bit to greasy and was not evenly coated. most of the surface area of the shrimp had no visible coating, which means its not sticking to the shrimp and falling off when fried. Bit too much salt and red/cayenne pepper. Edible but not great. The Red, Beans, & Rice. Well all I can say is that they need to quit making it. Too salty and too much red pepper. That is one thing I find in so-called Cajun restaurants , north of Louisiana. They equate salt and cayenne pepper as Cajun flavor. Louisiana flavor is about that perfect blend of spices, not one spice stands out. Also the texture was not right. It should have a more creamy texture and some body. Not just look like boiled beans. The Gumbo. Again. Stop making this. the chicken was way to shredded. It ruined the taste and texture of the gumbo. Again way too much red/cayenne pepper. Staff was nice and atmosphere was good. Again poboy is descent, and edible. The owners need to visit some places like Pot & Paddle in Gonzales, La or Harbor seafood in Metarie, Louisiana. Experience some reference gumbo and poboys. Learn a couple of things and try again.

Favors and Flavors Menu with Prices 11775 Northfall Ln STE 103, Alpharetta

Hailing from the state of Florida and a new resident of Georgia, I have been jaded by the Georgia restaurants claiming to have ‘cajun’ inspired seafood. Unlike any of the other establishments that I have tried in the area, this restaurant was hands down the most authentic to cajun cuisine. We ordered 2 crab boils, bowl of gumbo, bowl of red beans and rice as well as the chicken wings and fries. For $17.95, the crab boils included 3 clusters of snow crab legs, 6 shrimp, 2 sausage, corn, potatoes and a world of flavor. The gumbo was incredible and probably the best I have EVER had coming out of a restaurant. It’s spice and flavor was appropriately accommodating to the rice. Not only was the food delicious but the culture of the restaurant with the friendly staff made the visit memorable. I would definitely recommend and visit when I get the cajun seafood itch!!

Crazy Catfish Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 805 W Centerville Rd, Garland

Whew…. let me start by saying that any time I don’t see Cajun people frying the fish when I walk in, I get nervous. My nerves were right. Let’s start with the good stuff though. The technique of cooking the food was perfect! They know how to fry catfish, okra, oysters, and hushpuppies, which is what I ordered. The guy taking the order was nice, spoke pretty good English, so it didn’t take long for me to ask my questions and put my order in. The restaurant was okay on the cleanliness. There were lots of crumbs by the tables and some weren’t cleaned off. It wasn’t busy, as most people were getting their food to-go. The food took about 7-8 minute to come out and the food presentation was nice. But let’s get to the taste of the food. I want to preface this by saying that my family is from “Cajun country” Louisiana, so I consider myself a catfish connoisseur. This fish was SO bland, I went back up to the counter to ask if they had some seasoning. He proceeded to tell me that they only have salt and pepper. Huh? No onion powder, garlic powder? Or Tony’s? Or Lawry’s? It tastes like they fried the fish in bland cornmeal, not even the Louisiana fish fry corn meal, which would have helped out the flavor. The cooks need to go and be great and cook something they are good at because seasoning fish/seafood is not one of them. I would not recommend this place at the top of the fried catfish food chain. That’s just my two-piece. Yes I finished my $11 meal though. Can’t waste food.

NELSON’S Seafood, Steaks and Cocktails – Menu with Prices – 17602 Preston Rd, Dallas

We’ve been coming to this location since it was Hook Line n Sinker. When that left/closed, it’s taken me a while to convince my wife to give it a try. Let’s start with the good things first. They’ve done a nice job remodeling the restaurant. It was clean. We were properly greeted at the door, promptly shown a table and had exceptional service from Morgan. The menu is somewhat diverse, but we both wanted to try their fried fish. The catfish was properly prepared and very tasty and portion size was good. The fried shrimp were also properly prepared and tasty. Here is where they lost us. I ordered a cup of gumbo. The rue was copper in color, that’s okay – it’s the way some do it. It had plenty of shrimp in it, but it was like pudding and the taste was just okay. If they need a recipe for real gumbo, let me know. I married a woman whose family is from southern Louisiana. The rue is black and it is soupy. Never like pudding. But that’s not the worst., We asked for cocktail sauce and tartar sauce for our fish and shrimp. I have no idea what the heck they served us but both were awful! Cocktail sauce tasted sweet . . . . no! no! no! And the tartar sauce was something else. I think that it was made from yogurt,. We both just ended up using catsup. At least they had Heinz as opposed to some budget brand. Portions were good. Price was fine. Service was exceptional. The accompanying condiments to complete the meal and the gumbo were awful.

North Of The Bayou – Menu with Prices – 802 Atlas Ave, Madison

I really want to like this place. I genuinely love cajun food and it’s right by my house. The atmosphere is interesting. It’s a huge pink building visible from the highway. Inside it’s part medival castle, part quinceanera. It was originally a supper club, then a night club, then a Mexican restaurant, and you can still see the iterations of all previous establishments. I’d be very curious to see what it looked like circa 1985 or 1990. It’s a very interesting building with 5 stories and multiple dining rooms. They have many cajun/creole staples and a few odd midwesternized versions. My friend and I decided to try the shrimp po boy, seafood gumbo, red beans and rice, and beignets. Everything was right in theory but in practice, it reminded me as if Applebees or Denny’s had added cajun items to their menu. Everything seemed bland and reheated. The breading would not stay on the shrimp, the roll was the wrong consistency for a poboy, and it had pickles added that were not the right flavor (poboys do often come with pickles). The gumbo and RBR had the texture of canned soup and badly needed hot sauce. The beignets were ok (how do you mess up fried dough?) but heavy, and not light and fluffy at all. If they make any significant changes I might return, otherwise, I think I’ll stick to New Orleans Takeout despite their limited parking.

Luff’s Fish House Menu with Prices 390 E Palmetto Park Rd, Boca Raton

I usually only like to review a restaurant after visiting it at least twice but since I don’t know if I’ll get back here and I really enjoyed myself, I thought it would be worthwhile to recommend it. Luff’s Fish House has a wonderful atmosphere. I love the decor and the level of service. Both the inside and outside seating areas are enchanting. The wine, craft beer and signature cocktail options are very good. The menu offers quite a number of different seafood options. Obviously, there are only a few non seafood options. The prices are a bit higher than many seafood restaurants, but the location likely necessitates that. The gumbo appetizer was quite spicy (I like that) with a good amount of sausage and shrimp. My only issue is that it’s a little too tomato based and not as much of a true Cajun roux base. My blackened snapper with creole shrimp sauce was fantastic and cooked perfectly. There are probably a few changes I would recommend to the menu but I will trust that the owners know their customers better than I do. If you are looking for excellent seafood and a beautiful atmosphere, Luffs is a great option for you.

zydeco cajun grill – Menu with Prices – 7310 Collins Rd, Jacksonville

I have heard able this truck for a while now. They have been taste testing or something. I really don’t think they are officially out just yet either. They attended the New Kids on the Block truck rally today. They even had a truck owner/veteran inside the truck today also. I did get to taste a couple of their offerings. First a sample of their pulled pork which was good and had some good seasonings. Then their gumbo with chicken n sausage. Now that was really good I just wish it had some more kick to it. I went with their Jambalaya and it was not what I’m used to. I have been all though Louisiana from the bayous of Lake Charles to some of the back street of New Orleans to the north in Baton Rouge. I have eaten me some jambalaya now. This was more on the chicken an rice with not a lot of cajun flavors. I will go back but I will be all over that gumbo. Ok Damian you have some caught up to do some get out there and get r done. Next time I want me some sooee in my bowl.

Louisiana Famous Fried Chicken – Menu with Prices – 1515 S Vine Ave, Tyler

I stopped here for lunch. I passed by this place a few times and was curious. I love good fried chicken and cajun food. So, I got the fried chicken combo #1 and a small seafood gumbo, 16oz. The fried chicken was a pleasant surprise, crunchy crust, tender and juicy inside. It was hot and tasted fresh out of the fryer. It was also a little spicy. Not too hot but definitely spicier than most! I wanted a side of dirty rice but it was cooking and not ready yet. So I got a side of cole slaw. It was your basic cole slaw, pretty good. I also got a small gumbo. The gumbo had a dark roux base, lots of veggies, the trinity, onion, bell pepper, and celery, also with tomato and okra. It had a good amount of shrimp, chicken, and sausage. It had rice in the bottom of the container. The gumbo was a hit as well. It had a great flavor and was also a little spicy. Again not too hot that you couldn’t enjoy the flavor, but definitely got the sinuses cleared out! The atmosphere was very basic, red covered both benches, black table tops, orange painted walls. Fairly clean establishment, pretty friendly folks. Not a lot of interaction with the staff except taking your order and bringing your food. If you like fried chicken and are looking for something other than KFC, Church’s, or Popeye’s, give this place a try. You may find a new favorite.

J Crab House – Menu with Prices – 4807 W Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy E, Kissimmee

Fun fact about me. I LOVE SEAFOOD!!!!!! It was no surprise that this Louisiana girl was gonna look for some seafood where ever I visited ! You yelpers didn’t disappoint with this one. Man you all had it right! So I was on yelp of course looking for a great local spot to get some seafood and I stumbled upon a couple reviews on this spot. I told my husband last night we are eating here today! So we did! We arrived to a strip mall where this restaurant is located. It is very clean outside there is no loitering of any sorts. You approach the door and pull it doesn’t open at first and then I read the sign that if I didn’t RSVP to read the menu in the right of the door ( see photos ) we went in and we asked to be seated for 2! Now mind you there are about 6 tables and 3 were empty but we were told that these tables were reserved for patrons! I was a little taken back but none the less we ordered food to go (good thing the hotel wasn’t too too far) We ordered the shrimp that comes with 1 pound of skin on head off shrimp, a corn, and potato. We also ordered 1 pound of snow crabs that comes with a corn and a potato. We added a piece of sausage! He asked are you ok with peeling and de-veining your own shrimp? I replied I’m from Louisiana we peel our own seafood Man when I tell you it was sooooooo good and though I mentioned 1 pound each it was very filling and the sausage was the bomb.com it was Kielbasa and I had never had that. It did remind me of the andouille we eat in Louisiana. There was flavor in each shrimp and they were pretty big. Now the guy said that they were getting booked for tomorrow already…….hopefully my bro and sis in law will want some after I tell them it’s so good and will want to go Friday. I would go back but I would call ahead. The cost is only a tad more than that we pay for seafood in Louisiana that is prepared that way. If you are in Orlando, call or swing by! You will not be disappointed

Moe’s Gas and Grill – Menu with Prices – 401 S Northshore Dr, Knoxville

Went here a couple days ago to try their new menu. It was great. I tried the ribs, greens, cheese grits, gumbo, and shrimp salad. I gave it 4 stars only because the gumbo wasn’t the greatest. Don’t get me wrong, it was tasty just not something I’d rush to order again. The ribs though, ridiculoussssssss! My wife doesn’t eat ribs and she had no trouble eating one. They were smoked ribs and had a dry rub on there that makes you want more for sure. I’d definitely go back. The chef was awesome too!

Pho & Po Boy Menu with Prices 1827 SW Green Oaks Blvd #149, Arlington

Always like trying new places and read the reviews and saw how much shrimp they put on their poboys and it was on the way to Six Flags so decided to try it. Hubby thought of reserving ahead which was a wise choice bc food was ready when we got there. Ordered 3 shrimp poboys, 1 fried chicken, 1 grilled pork which is basically like banh mi. It’s Vietnamese owned poboy place so was expecting banh mi. Their poboys were 6.99 each and loved how fries were included. Got there and order waa ready. There’s a cute flower wall for pics inside. Firemen were waiting for their food lol and restrooms were clean. Got our order and ate in the car. Not the easiest to even tho there’s take out boxes. It’s messy with the sauce. I was impressed with how much shrimp they put in and the chicken tenders were huge. Liked that. The fries were Cajun style n a bit too spicy for little ones. My regret is ordering ahead bc it wasn’t as fresh as it could be. Fries were a bit stale. But I liked the fried popcorn shrimp tho. It was alot. However I m picky on my bread n this wasn’t banh mi bread like someone mentioned and the grill pork tasted like banh mi but not the bread. It wasn’t bad but chewy. The tenders were good but nothing wow. I like how they have alot n the shrimp was good n plentiful but the sauce and slaw like fixings were ok. Idk what I was expecting. Louisiana poboys at Parkway? Either way. It was fine and filled our tummies. Way too big for 1 person n lots of fried food here. Not sure if we will be back but maybe for their actual nonfried seafood?

The Crab Station – Deep Ellum – Menu with Prices – 2813 Commerce St, Dallas

I saw this place was new on Yelp, and thought I’d give it a try. They have only been open a few weeks. My girlfriend saw gumbo on the menu, and she was sold! When we got there she ordered the gumbo, and we were told their gumbo station wasn’t working. Strike one! They were also out of crab cakes, which she also wanted. Strike two! So basically everything my girlfriend wanted wasn’t available. The Calamari is good, it’s not in the typical circular cut, which I think is nice. Pieces are asymmetrical and varying in size, which makes each piece a little different texture. A bit too much breading for me, and one piece in particular was so large it made for awkward sharing. The hush puppies were not very good. Very bland, basically jiffy corn meal condensed into balls. My girlfriend and I each took one bite. The Saints Salad is okay. The only dressing they had available was ranch. It’s a plain old salad, the chicken is good, they forgot to bring this dish out with the other dishes, and forgot to put cheese on it when it did arrive after asking. Seafood Sack #1 was not good. The crawfish shells were so hard, it was nearly impossible to peel them. The shrimp were over cooked and fell apart. The sausage was ok. I would have ordered the T.K.O. spice, but they wanted to charge an extra dollar for that, and I didn’t like the idea of being nickeled and dimed, so I ordered the flame thrower spice. It wasn’t spicy at all, and had a very heavy garlic flavor. If you’re expecting typical Cajun flavoring, it’s not that at all. The waiter asked if I wanted the heads on the shrimp, or not. I’m indifferent to this but told him no heads, at which he informed me that would be an extra dollar. More nickel and diming… I got them with the heads on. Strike three! I complained to the staff about my boiled seafood sack, and they handled it very well. The manager comped the item, and was apologetic. The server was attentive, and overall the service has earned this place a third star.
