Words can’t describe how cool that place is but I will try. Drinks are affordable. Faces are friendly. The backyard (not sure what to call it) is like a playground for adults who drink and like to be social. Bring a steak to cook on the grill, yes, in the backyard, a steak, a grill!! One day I was offered some steak by a group of people that had just grilled. It was weird to be offered a slice of steak in the bar, I said yes of course. You can chill by the fire pit or throw horseshoes even when it is a cooler season. Went outside the other day (January) and the fire pit was roaring and the horseshoe pits were looking lonely. This is a stop if you like dive bars but definitely a stop if you llloooovvveeeee dive bars and they make you giddy.

Tommy’s Pub – Menu with Prices – 3124 Eastway Dr Suite 710, Charlotte

Dive Bar: A dive bar is a type of bar or pub. Dive bars generally have a relaxed and informal atmosphere — they are often referred to by local residents as “neighborhood bars,” where people in the neighborhood gather to drink and socialize. Individual bars may be considered to be disreputable, sinister, or even a detriment to the community. Tommy’s Pub may not be some people’s idea of fun, but if you are a fan of dive bars, Tommy’s is a masterpiece.  I had one friend say he liked it because he is always the youngest one there and he is early 40s.   We went in one afternoon, drank a couple of beers and listened to George Jones and Johnny Cash.   It’s so fun to walk out of a dimly lit bar and being blinded by the sun. Feeling the sun on your face with a happy little afternoon buzz.  If you go in be sure to buy your membership, it’s a private club.

Bobby’s Bar – Menu with Prices – 1718 Morris Rd, Columbus

Perfect place for my 250th review on Yelp. I went here to play pool and drink beer with some good friends after a buddy’s father’s funeral and wake in Columbus, Georgia. Bobby’s Bar, located at 1718 Morris Rd, is a small cinder-block building by the side of the road. The place is a typical small-town, honky-tonk variety of roadside dive bar; very popular with the area blue collar workers and local bar flies. It’s the kind of place where you can drink cheap pitchers of beer, play pool (or horseshoes out back if the weather is nice) and hang with your closest of friends. On the day I went the weather was nice and the smell of reefer permeated the mid-afternoon air drifting in through the open doorway leading outside to the backyard. Out back was where some local blue collar types were throwing horseshoes and celebrating the beautiful warm sunny weather breaking up the doldrums of the Winter cold snap. Classic Rock, Country Rock (and some 80s era songs that my friend Dennis kept playing to get a rise out of the locals) was continuously blaring from the jukebox inside the bar. Sadly this place does not serve food; that would have been interesting indeed. The bartenders were nice; however, when my friend asked if we could run a tab, the sweet lady bartender (who had worked the afternoon shift) nodded and then very nicely stated, “we prefer that you pay as you go.” Best not to piss off the locals if you find yourself getting too drunk or overly obnoxious or cocky while playing pool or horseshoes. This is the kind of place where you might get your ass seriously kicked if you mouth off to or piss off the wrong person. Columbus, Georgia (like most military base towns in the South) can be a hazardous place for the uninitiated. Don’t boast about being from Atlanta; folks in Southwest Georgia tend to be distrustful of if not outright negatively inclined towards non-locals – especially Atlantans. As long as you behave nicely, the locals will be nice to you; stop being nice and you will be in trouble. The drink coasters on the tables had the bar’s logo imprinted on them and the logo states that Bobby’s has been in business since 1961. I don’t think much has changed with respect to the interior of the place since 1961. The walls are covered with old, brown wood paneling; the floor is covered with old vinyl tiling. The bathroom, though clean, features bare cinderblock walls and bare concrete slab for the floor. As far as dive bars go, this one is solid. Perhaps really deserves 3.5 or 4 stars. If you find yourself in Columbus, and feel like doing some drinking, you might as well go to Bobby’s since you sure could do a hell of a lot worse elsewhere.

Brasserie des Patriotes – Menu with Prices – 3363 Ontario St E, Montreal

We came to this dive bar on a weekday because it was one of the few bars in Hochelada that had live music on the street. Honestly, I had more fun at this place than a lot of other higher rated bars in Montreal. Maybe it was the proximity to our AirBnB, or maybe it was because one of the few unpretentious, overpriced bars that we found, but we Angelenos felt right at home here. If you’re looking for a solid dive bar with good service and clean restrooms, I’d give this place a try ?

Bayou Thunder Saloon – Menu with Prices – 1910 Market St, Shreveport

9/2/18. Five stars?? 5 Stars?? But this is a dive bar!! Yes. And dive bars have their place in the night, and sometimes even the day. And a dive bar done right can defeat any velvet rope, top shelf, VIP, bottle service, cabana by the pool that even the most frequent fliers of barflys would have to buzz by and appreciate, if not outright respect. Put on your scuba suit. This just might be the Mariana Trench of dive bars. First off, by the name alone, this is not some race track, nor is it some type of bubba burlesque male revue, which is what the name seems to imply. At least I think so. No, it is not one, nor the other, or even both. It is a dive bar. And it is a five star dive bar. Cigarettes? Smoked openly, proudly and by the carton here. But only if it had Terminator 3 pinball machine? It does!! This place is packed with regulars. And not the crowd that waits til 11pm to get to the point of party to launch into the evening. No. This mass of humanity arrives in droves early, and stays late. And this party will start without you. If you show up at 10, this place is already at full throttle. Everybody, to a person, seems super kind and cheerful. People just having a good time on a night out. Bayou Thunder may or may not be your cup of Long Island Tea, but if you do venture over this way, you’ll be in the company of many others having a blast, and you will have no choice but to feel the Thunder here, and have a blast yourself!

Clipper Mill Inn And Lounge Menu with Prices 1619 Union Ave, Baltimore

I love a good dive bar, as you know, and the Clipper Mill Lounge definitely qualifies as a dive bar, but it’s much more than that. It’s got the traditional spotty history, fights and colourful clientele that any good dive bar has, but it’s also a neighbourhood bar. It may be somewhat hard to spot for the uninitiated from the outside (don’t look for a sign, there isn’t one), but once inside it wears its colours well, plenty of bar neon, football and NASCAR posters and even a decent pool table with appropriately stained felt. But it’s the clientele that rise above the average dive bar patrons. Everyone has a story and is willing to tell it to you, it’s probably the happiest group of day drinkers I’ve met in a dive bar. I met the current owner, Rob, when he offered me his stool at the bar. He explained a little of the bar’s history to me (yes, it got the name, “The Bloody Bucket” unofficially due to the number of fights the establishment endured before his tenure). He seemed like a genuinely nice guy who liked the bar biz (hard to find in dive bar owners) and more importantly, his clientele. It’s got the standard dive bar menu; strong drinks, cheap prices, but I really can’t over emphasize the neighbourhood feel of the bar. It took me back to the days when bars were meeting places for the locals and where the great inventions/ideas of the day were thought up over a tasty beverage. So whether you call it The Bloody Bucket, The Bottom (because it’s at the bottom of a hill) or the Clipper Lounge, it’s a great little dive bar that deserves a visit from anyone who likes a cheap drink and a good story.

Lafayette Bar And Grill – Menu with Prices – 3000 Lafayette Blvd, Norfolk

Well that was a ton of fun. Just got back from Lafayette Bar and Grill. I had literally driven by this place two thousand times before tonight. We were searching for good dive bars and we found one! Great karaoke DJ to boot. Reminds me of the now-defunct Cruzers in West Ghent. Maybe the “planets were all aligned” tonight but we had a blast.

Third Base Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 1949 W Ray Rd #11, Chandler

I have a serious love for dive bars, and this one does not disappoint! It is seriously seedy looking in and out, and attracts a very eclectic crowd. There is also almost always a decent crowd, no matter the night. Drinks are very strong and inexpensive, and they offer great daily specials on both food & drinks. Bar service is always fast and friendly. On weeknights it’s pretty common that they have just one bartender working the entire place, and I’m always impressed with how efficient they are! This is a bar heavy into sports. It’s an official off-track betting bar for horse races, and the crowd who comes for that is intense about it! It’s also a New England Patriots bar (go Pats!!), so be prepared for that if you wander in during football season. They also have a pool table and 3 dartboards, as well as a dog friendly back patio. If you’re a fellow dive bar aficionado, a Pats fan, or just enjoy a low key night, Third Base is for you!

Vine Wine Shop and Lounge Menu with Prices 1320 S Maple Grove Rd, Boise

This is a relaxing and unassuming wine bar. James and Tim are friendly without making you feel obligated to purchase the most expensive wine for sale. Friday and Saturday, a full meal is offered. The menu for dinner changes each weekend and is posted on their Facebook page and website. Saturday usually includes live music from local artists. There is a small menu of tapas available Tuesday-Saturday (cheese plate, bruschetta, hummus, etc.). I used to frequent a different wine bar in Meridian but I like the atmosphere here better. Also, during the winter, there is a roaring fire in the fireplace! Perfect for those cold nights with a glass of vino!

Broadway Butcher Shop – Menu with Prices – 3828 Broadway Blvd, Kansas City

We have been shopping at Broadway Butcher for over 2 years, and I doubt we stop. Let me begin by saying from where we live it’s not convenient – we live in southern JoCo, south of 140th and they are at 39th – but almost every Saturday we make a 50 min round trip, not counting the time in the store, to buy the dry-aged rib-eyes. Don’t be afraid of the price, they are so delicious and rich my wife and I split a steak…it actually saves us money. Their service is better than any store, they will offer different preparation ideas – if you ask, and they might have the freshest seafood in town. Besides the dry-aged rib-eyes we love the dry-aged pork chops, pork pinwheels, sausages, paté’s, and chicken. The way we prepare the rib-eyes is to sear one side for one minute on my grill’s sear station, turn it over and sear for 30 sec on the other side. With the down side we move it to the grill for grill marks then to an area for indirect heat (burner is off under it). After 2 min 30 sec we turn the steak over and again put grill marks on it, then move it back to indirect heat for 2 min. Bring the steak in and wrap in foil for 10 min. The steak will be a perfect medium rare.

Bar Uno Menu with Prices 108 2nd St SW, Albuquerque

So I didn’t want to like this bar, I didn’t. I was an old faithful of the old Chama Tap Room and this felt like cheating. Except I hated their warm beer, and I love vodka. So the feel of a local dive bar…MY local dive bar…but with vodka? Ok. I’ll give it a shot. And I’ve been giving it shot after shot ever since they opened. Pun intended. As much as I loved the old bullet hole in the wall (I was there when it happened!) I really love the cleaner, cooler vibe. And by cooler, I mean the A/C actually works! Yes, I know these references are all for the old locals who used to drink there, but it all has to be said. Ok. On with the new. Damn the bartender can make a drink. Rumor has it he has over 100 drinks he has perfected. I don’t doubt it a bit. If I remember correctly, he’s from New Orleans and that man can mix a cocktail. Strong drinks. Friendly service. Cold A/C. New, clean bar. That still feels like a local bar. Because guess what? All of us old Tappy-lovers still go there. It’s home but with better drinks.

Cabot Farmers’ Annex – Menu with Prices – 163 Commercial St, Portland

THIS PLACE IS SIMPLY LIFE CHANGING. This store is the only reason I venture down to Commercial Street. It is purely a DELIGHT of epic proportions. This store offers samples of cheese. Free samples of cheese. FREE. CHEESE. The front of the store includes numerous cheddar samples, including aged and sharp, extra sharp, etc. They also usually have their hot honey out to try too. The back of the store is where the party starts. There are probably a dozen cheeses available for sampling. The hot habanero cheese is truly magical. As is the garlic and herb. But don’t miss the everything bagel cheese, for this may open your soul to a new religious experience. There’s a plethora of fun cheese-related trinkets throughout the store, including cheese cookbooks, cleavers (and mini-cleavers!), dips, and things to dip into dips (pretzels, crackers, other delicious items). After you sample enough cheese to pass as a meal, stop by their cooler and grab some blocks of their VERY reasonably priced cheese. There are speciality cheeses, pre-cut cheeses, THERE’S EVEN MEAD IN THAT COOLER. Also, there are paintings of cows everywhere. This store is a stone’s throw from my office, so 80% of my lunch breaks are spent chatting with the superbly friendly staff and deciding which new cheese(s) I should purchase. It can get crowded in here, especially during tourist season, but you MUST SNEAK IN AND BASK IN THIS PORTLAND LANDMARK. If you don’t, you’re missing out massively. TEN STARS FOR THIS MASTERPIECE.

White Eagle – Menu with Prices – 2300 E Carson St, Pittsburgh

First year, we went to Jack’s. They’ll always have a special place in our hearts as the best dive bar ever. This time, we went on a mission to find this year’s Jacks…low and behold, The White Eagle. Great drinks cheap prices, and they even made us a special local drink. Definitely left there pleased. Warning – if you’re looking for an upscale bar to take your lady friend on an impressive date, be forewarned. This is divey of divey of bars. That’s exactly what we went looking for. Very cool people, laid back atmosphere, but very much a dive bar (and considering it’s Carson street, dive says it all). We had a great time!
