Who knew that there is a Lithuanian community in South Boston, most known for its Irish community? There are only a few places in the US that serve Lithuanian food and it would be hard to think of a place that is more authentic than this ‘restaurant’ in the basement of the South Boston Lithuanian Association, about 6 blocks from the Broadway MBTA stop in South Boston. It is not much to look at,.. think of a large recreation room in someone’s basement. They are only open on weekends and close at 7 PM. This was my first time eating Lithuanian food, which is similar to other Eastern European or Slavic cuisine. Solid hearty food that could keep you warm in the winter (and we had cold beet soup to cool you in the summer). Food like kilebasa, stuffed cabbage, pork rolls and dumplings. Tasty, but not fancy. They also serve Lithuanian beer, which is great. And the prices are very modest: a heaping plate of food for $10 to $12.

Bakers Delight – Menu with Prices – 5111 College Oak Dr # D, Sacramento

I hadn’t been there in quite awhile so I decided to stop in today. I was pleasantly surprised to find this family owned bakery after so many years! I only had six dollars but the very nice lady ( probably the owner) gave me hearty helping of their homemade carrot salad, it’s layered with cabbage, onion, mushrooms cream sauce and parsley, it’s deliciouso!! I also got their fresh hot cabbage & cheese peroski which is filled with a delicious buttery sautéed cabbage cooked inside a fried crispy pocket of goodness. A nice treat if you’re lookng for fresh homemade russian recipes that have more than likely been passed down from many generations. Their beet salad is another favorite of mine. There’s so many items to choose from!! Go there, you won’t be disappointed!!

Slavonian European Cafe Menu with Prices 7 Northern Dr, Troy

I’ll need to preface this seeing as my rating is not in line with many others who find it more than Ok. My mother is from Eastern Europe and cooked daily in restaurants and at home. We had every type of Eastern European dish growing up as a child, and never really appreciated it, until growing up. Yes, I was spoiled from a food standpoint, growing up, and why I find it hard to say the place is awesome. I will say it is good, but as many have pointed out, don’t expect the Borscht or Pierogi to taste typical. That is one thing I believe this place has going for it. Some of the dishes are really home made and you can tell authentic recipes from the owner. You get to enjoy their unique flavor, which is hard to find these days. I did enjoy some dishes and the flavors, but some other ones were a little bland and tasted like from a can, (i.e., the mushroom soup). The meat dumplings also tasted very similar to the dumplings in Dim Sum down the street. Other dishes were tasty but just not as good as my mother’s sarma or kupus. Sarma (stuffed Croatian cabbage) had much more meat to rice ratio and the cabbage thick and hearty wrapping dripping in meat sauce. I will say I enjoyed her version, as it was light on the meat, and cabbage wrapped very thin. I laughed, as I would have preferred this as a child, but now miss the hearty Croatian sarma I grew up with. Both are great, but it depends on your taste, and as far as my taste goes, let’s just say, Mom knows best when it comes to Eastern European taste.

Courthouse Seafood – Menu with Prices – 498 Cambridge St, Cambridge

Totally worth going out of your way. Outstanding food, great value. Every time I come to Boston for work or to visit my many relatives who live here, I always make the trek out to CourtHouse seafood. It’s just so good. In the summer they have what I consider to be Boston’s best lobster roll. They always have daily specials. For example tonite I had a fried oyster platter which was delicious, for $17.95. The table next to me had whole sauteed fish that looked incredible. This isn’t a fancy restaurant, it’s more like a Mom & Pop place. It’s not touristy at all, just a great local place with super fresh seafood at very reasonable prices. The downside is that it’s not near the T, but parking is relatively easy and it’s a short Uber ride from the tourist areas. Which to me is definitely worth it.

Paik’s Noodles – Menu with Prices – 28124 Newhall Ranch Rd, Santa Clarita

This is a review for lunch to-go order on a cold weekday! What I ordered: Beef Jjamppongbap (no spice) Food: The broth was flavorful and PERFECT for a cold and rainy weather. I ended up slurping the soup after I finished eating the noodles and toppings! As what others noted, it has a peppery taste which might not be for everyone. But works for me!! The actual bowl was full of vegetables, beef, and a couple of shrimps. You would get a good amount for each mouthful of noodle and soup! Price: $ CHEAP for the quality and quantity! Parking: It always has ample parking. This is located inside the plaza. Service: For the TO-GO experience only! I like the fact that they didn’t forget the necessities that comes with the order such as utensils and napkins. Plus points for me! Just like ordering a bowl of noodle soup, the broth and noodles/toppings are separated. The noodles I got wasn’t sticking and the veggies seem fresh and not too wilted. However, I would suggest for a bigger bowl for the broth. I had to slurp the soup before putting in the noodles because the bowl was a little shallow to put everything in. It’d be a mess if I just drop all the contents in!! Not to mention it was also hard to mix it in since the to-go bowl is small. WILL COME BACK!!! I will probably order Jajangmyeon during summer time and get the beef soup for winter/cold days. So many items on the menu I’d love to explore!

MAOJIAOHUOLA å??æ¤???ï¼???åº?ï¼? – Menu with Prices – 43-23 Main St, Flushing

I have no clue how this place got 3 stars. This is probably me only eason to come to flushing. Duck head with peanut is the best one I’ve had in the whole NYC. Crispy Pork Slices could get a 4 star for itself. Spicy pork brain is the average level. Not a big fan of any other special Dishes. ChwanChwan/Bamboo sticks are the best with the pot seasoning. I don’t like most of the hotpot based foods, but this is not like any of the hotpots, malatang or wutever. The soup/sauce here is more like spicy marinated soups (??), which tasted more gentle and peaceful (I know it is a weird word to use here but it’s true). My personal favorite chwanchwan would be short ribs, intestines, ducks web (but they really should remove the bones more fully), Chinese cabbage (don’t take it if you are not a fan of spiciness, since it carries sauces & oil). Second level would be beef, spam, potato, winter melon. Btw, although they don’t provide ChwanChwan for take-out orders, they do allow you to take out the rest of those together with some soup if you dine-in. The left over soup would be an ideal soup base if you’d like to make some chili-oiled dumplings or some spicy cold dishes at home.

Gaufres and Goods – Menu with Prices – 212 Charlotte St, St. Augustine

This place is a hidden GEM! Upon arriving you will be greeted by either the lovely owner with southern Polish roots or one of the lovely servers. They were all humble and worked very hard to tend to customers. We ordered some meat pierogis and cheese ones (I recommend getting them sautéed) as an appetizer. I went for a vegetarian (not vegan) option and had Grace?s Favorite with the Feta Pie for my entree and it was DELICIOUS! The pie was served with a balsamic vinaigrette drizzled on the side. The pastry/ crust was flaky and crisp and delicious. I mentioned afterwards to the staff how tasty everything I had was, especially the borsch (beet and mushroom dumpling soup) and the server offered me to try a chilled beet soup as well which was just as delicious! It had radishes and beets in a beet reduction with dill and buttermilk. No single flavor overpowered another. The entree overall was nice and light but also filling. My party also ordered a couple gyros (the meat was hearty and seasonsed so nicely) which I was fortunate enough to try as well. Another person had the Yemista and cleared his plate! Their bread is fluffy and tasty too. If you are a coffee person, try the Greek Coffee!! It?s strong. If I could give this place 10 stars I would. The seating areas both inside and outside look like it was plopped out of a small European village. It?s cozy and the food is most definitely made with love. You cannot pass this place up without getting some of their pierogis!!

Cop Out Pierogies – Menu with Prices – 350 Butler St, Pittsburgh

So I’ve had high expectations of this restaurant since reading the reviews. I’ve been planning on visiting for months but never found the time and they do have limited hours. Last Thursday, I finally found the time and to my delight, they were open. I ordered their cheese-potato perogies and stuffed cabbage to go. While waiting, the owner came out from the kitchen and introduced himself. What a super nice gentleman!! He offered me a cheesecake perogie dessert, Delicious!! As many of you may know, he served as a police officer for many years. After retiring, he opened up his restaurant. He clearly has a passion and talent for cooking and their menu has a huge variety of perogies and to my surprise, stuffed cabbage. I brought the food home and tried the perogies first!! Unbelievably delicious!! I had high expectations and they far exceeded them!! Buttery, onion coated, perogies cooked to perfect!! Best perogies I’ve ever had! I then took a taste of the stuffed cabbage. My grandmother made great stuffed cabbage! These were the closest to my grandmother’s I’ve ever tasted, and I’ve been to several Hungarian restaurants over the years! So if you live anywhere near, you need to stop by!! You won’t be disappointed. Just check their hours in advance. I give them 5 stars without any hesitation!!

The Barn – Public House – Menu with Prices – 1940 6 Ave NW, Calgary

It was nice. Nobody is advertising about this little community Hall pub on the upper floor of a community building…. It isn’t polished or fancy, but the beers are delicious & good price, and the food is great for a small kitchen in a community Hall. I’ll go again. Don’t come with your nose in the air and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Walter Hansel Wine & Bistro – Menu with Prices – 3535 Guerneville Rd, Santa Rosa

Once again, Walter Hansel does not disappoint!! We got a gift card and used it a few nights ago. Service was great as always. The server we had has been there since they opened! That’s saying a lot!! Every time we come here , the food and service is consistent. The menu changes frequently, so it’s not the name thing every time. We got the beet salad, and asparagus soup for appetizers. The beet salad had maybe some olive oil and salt and pepper in it, it didn’t even need dressing. It was SOOO good , the beets melted in your mouth! They poured the soup right at the table so it’s nice and hot! I got the burger and hubby got the halibut for entrees (which were both amazing) and then we got lemon creme brûlée and profiteroles for dessert!! We went all out and everything was phenomenal!! Can’t wait to come back soon!!!

Bangkok Square @North Gainesville – Menu with Prices – 8181 NW 39th Ln #100, NW 39th Ave, Gainesville

So last week we went to a restaurant in the same strip mall as Bangkok Square, and had noticed that it was there. We had looked at the menu and decided that we had to try it sometime. Well, that sometime happened a week later. We got in around seven and had a table instantly. It is summer, so things aren’t so busy with students and the like. The restaurant is more open than most Thai restaurants that I have experienced, and more light comes in from the windows so that you can see, which is nice. There is also a patio on the South side that should be nice in the late Fall and Winter months, particularly since it is not overlooking 39th Avenue. I ordered the fresh rolls as an appetizer, along with the Tom Yum soup. The rolls were good, but a bit on the small side. The soup was quite good, though. I am a total sucker for Tom Yum soup. For my main course I ordered the green curry “Thai Hot”. The curry was good, don’t get me wrong, but either my concept of what “Thai Hot” should be is completely skewed, or I received the American version of the concept, because frankly it barely registered. I would call it a medium spice level, a bit above jalapeno, but not at the level of habanero. Still tasty, mind you… just not all that spicy. For a local Thai restaurant, I am happy that they have opened here, as it gives my more options closer to home, and I don’t have to drive to the other side of Gainesville. I will be returning at some point to try something different in the next couple of months, I am sure.

Rich J.C. | Korean Restaurant Menu with Prices 1313 S University Ave, Ann Arbor

Rich JC is a very cute mom-and-pop establishment that offers bar-style seating. They get really busy and it’s hard to fit everyone in at times, so they’ll direct you to a certain seating spot in order to accommodate everyone (sometimes you’ll get oddly placed at the end of the bar or right next to someone — even when it’s relatively empty). Because it’s such a small and narrow restaurant, it gets chilly during the winter if you’re near the door. However, their food warms you up if you get a hot bowl of jigae or bibimbap! I really like most of the items on their menu. They have a free banchan selection of kimchi, pickled radish, and bean sprouts to start you off after you place your order. They also have complimentary miso soup if you have a ‘dry’ entree that isn’t soup-based (something like bibimbap). Their kimchi jigae is great — it has shin-ae ramen, kimchi, and your choice of protein in a bubbling stone bowl. I also really really like their dolsot bibimbap (dolsot essentially means it comes in the hot stone bowl). Their kimbap is also great, and my friends have enjoyed their bulgolgi dishes. The only thing that I’ve been a little disappointed by on their menu was their tteokbokki, which I found to be lacking in flavor. The reason why I’ve frequented this place less often is just because I dislike how rushed I feel when eating there. It’s hard to bring someone who is unfamiliar with the menu, because the staff doesn’t give you much time to look over the menu without coming back to take your order. They’re also constantly cleaning up your dining area, which is great because it keeps your space clean — but it’s a bit intrusive when someone keeps picking up your can of soda to see if it’s empty throughout your meal. My only real complaint is about how rushed the eating experience is at times, but other than that — the food is great. Rich JC is especially incredible during the winter when you can warm up to a hearty bowl of jigae or soondubu.

Recreation Billiards – Menu with Prices – 412 W 4th St, Winston-Salem

Whisky Box, though a little hard to find, is well worth the effort for the cool experience that awaits! It’s located inside Rec Billiards, down a flight of stairs into the basement of the building. It’s certainly not classified as a dive bar, but nothing fancy about it either. A small but cool interior with low ceilings and a really cool looking bar! As the name suggests it’s geared towards whisky and scotch, but don’t let that stop you as they can make about anything you want. The bartenders love to play and create something according to what you typically like. From rare whisky’s to the more popular and well known brands, there’s plenty to choose from and they do a nice cocktail accordingly. The prices are beyond fair and make it a easy place to park it for 3-4 hours to enjoy some drinks! Not many places are you able to do that without breaking the bank. This night I couldn’t stop sampling their creation of the Gin Fizzy! A frothy egg creme top, coupled with a good quality gin, made for a enjoyable night!
