The summer of 2019 has been fraught with social media fueled fried chicken wars and may I request Las Abuelas step into the ring? Las Abuelas has one of the most flavorful fried chicken sandwiches that I’ve ever had and was thoroughly impressed by the unique combination of flavors. I tried a De Lujo which features a crispy, juicy chicken thigh on a Martin’s potato roll, some pickled slaw, cool creamy avocado, serrano crema and chipotle mayo for some kick, onion for some bite, cilantro for some freshness and cojita for some tang. It’s a very well constructed well balanced sandwich that tingles the spectrum of your palate. Bandera tots are well fried and also coated with creamy goodness – chipotle mayo, jalepeno crema, cojita and tajin. Very crisp with some funky interplay with the cheese with some slight heat. Caveat though: the food, especially the tots are really heavy (go figure with cheese, crema, mayo, deep fried goodness). You’ll definitely want a nap afterwards. It’s kinda far away from everything else, so I can’t say I’ll be back that often, but if I lived anywhere remotely close, I would be digging this joint once a week.

DD’s Burgers Menu with Prices 440B W Fireweed Ln, Anchorage

Finally, the guy who made the best burgers in town out of a food truck has resurfaced at a new spot called DD’s Burgers! They are located on Fireweed Ln. between C St. and Arctic next to the Coffee Queen coffee hut. I already have made a couple of visits to pick up lunch for myself and my co-workers since finding out about this new place from fellow Yelper Julie D’s great review a few weeks ago. The owner himself recognized me as a regular when I approached the drive-thru window and was happy to see a familiar face. I was glad to see him again after missing out on his signature burgers for the last few months. The menu has stayed the same for the most part with the familiar selection of burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and sides. An updated version of the menu is available on their Facebook page and the Burger of the Month is also back as of the 1st of February. My most recent visit prompted me to try the DD’s Favorite (diced bacon, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and their highly addictive burger sauce) along with a side order of Tater Tots. The burger was perfect as always after months of painstaking uncertainty on whether he was ever going to go back in business again. The Tater Tots were not surprisingly, also THE best. No one can cook them better than this guy with that perfect crispy texture and the right amount of salt. Everything on the menu is worth trying out especially the Betty Bleu (bacon, cheddar, lettuce, sweet onions, mayo, and tomato topped with melted bleu cheese), the Farmer John (bacon, grilled onions, American cheese, crumbled tater tots, and a fried egg topped with their specialty sauce), and the Yukon (reindeer sausage and caramelized onions in cheddar with lettuce, tomato, and chipotle mayo).

Elotes Juniors Menu with Prices 700 Secretary Dr, Arlington

It’s my favorite elote stand. And it’s 1 minute from my house. One thing I hate about the majority of spots you can get a legit elote- they mix the mayo and crema. Da fuq? I don’t like mayo in my elote and you force this upon me- ninja-ing it into my beloved crema??!! Savages. I had one heathen tell me you can’t tell.. I can tell you evil wench! My homie at this stand doesn’t put me in that horrible situation where I walk away with a sad cup of corn swimming in lime and hot sauce. He even layers all the mix ins and will put it in a bigger cup so you don’t have to stir so vigorously. He always has a squad with him- just a bunch of old schools sitting around his stand- its a little odd but don’t let it put you off. This gas station is shady AF- but the elote is so legit. He has other stuff too. When I get the nachos he puts the cheese and jalapenos separate in a cup so its not all soggy when I get home. So considerate. ive never gotten anything else, but he has other Mexican Munchies. He doesn’t really have set hours/ days- if the weather is nice enough to be outside he’s there. I have never seen him past 1030pm, but I have no idea what time he sets up in the morning.

Al Sabor del chef Menu with Prices 13700 FM 969, Austin

The Chipotle Burger is delicious! Freshly made – no frozen patties here. The bun is some type of artisan bread…usure exactly what kind, but its perfectly soft and flavorful. There is a nice balance between the slight sweet flavor of the bread, the mildly spicy chipotle sauce and the lightly salty flavor of the meat and cheese.

Ninth Square Market – Menu with Prices – 72 S Orange St, New Haven

Totally unassuming little mini-mart on Orange St. They have a deli counter. I’ve wandered in here for lunch before, but their $10 credit card minimum has sent me packing. Today… i was carrying cash. $7.16 later i walked out with a small bag of Utz Chips, a can of arizona iced tea, and a grilled chipotle chicken sandwich fit for a king. The sandwich was on a grilled hard roll, slathered with chipotle mayo. When he put it on, he used a big spoon and i thought it was gonna be WAY too much, but it was just right, and you could see the big chunks of fresh chipotle peppers. The chicken wasn’t a whole breast, it was shaved on the meat slicer, so each bite was perfectly even. The lettuce and tomato held onto a seasoning blend he sprinkled on, which complimented the sandwich nicely. I couldnt’ understand a word of the language this guy was speaking (i think it was Lebanese), but he sure as hell knows how to make a good sandwich…

That Chicken Place – Menu with Prices – 1907 Hewitt Ave Suite A, Everett

I really, really wanted to like this place, but…no. Service was a bit scatterbrained. Apparently you’re supposed to go have a seat and someone will come take your order…but we didn’t know this (nor did the people in front of us) and we ordered at the register. No biggie. We ordered two Nashville style chicken strip baskets with a side of loaded tots and two beverages, then found a table. About 2 minutes later the kid from the register walks over to the table like he’d never seen us before and wants to take our order. Very weird. So the food took a bit longer than you would think. As we sat there waiting we noticed on the receipt that they’d managed to screw our order up and the kid wrote it down as one order instead of two. And no loaded tots. Oops. A trip back to the counter to fix it. And then more waiting. The first order finally arrived and *looked* fabulous…then we tasted it. The Nashville spicy breading was pretty good, but unfortunately they’d fried these things *way* too long and the chicken itself was flavorless and really really chewy. Bummer bummer. We waited around to see if the second order was any better. Unfortunately it was not. The loaded tots never did make it to the table… I don’t know if we just caught them on a bad day or what, but we were really unimpressed all around. And at $15 each for a basket of 3 chicken strips with a side of tots, it wasn’t exactly cheap for the underwhelming food, either.

Thank U Chicken – Menu with Prices – 3473 Old Norcross Rd, Duluth

Thank U Chicken has a cool vibe with all the blue lighting, and it feels very intimate. Although there’s lots of vibrant chatter, you can still hear the people you’re with. Service is great, and they have a button on the side that you press to call your server with. If you order a lot, they bring out dishes periodically so it doesn’t feel like you’re waiting forever. We ordered the half fried chicken and half yang nyum chicken platter, which comes with four seasonal sides and a salad. I also ordered beef rice balls and a pineapple fresh fruit juice. The platter is a bit expensive, but it comes with a lot and is filling for two people. The four seasonal sides and salad came out first. This included fried gizzards, potatoes, cheese corn, and chips and salsa. The gizzards were good but oily. I liked the seasoning, but it was heavy. The corn was okay; we’ve had better cheese corn. The cheese was a little watery. The potatoes were good; I liked the sauce on top, which reminded me of sriracha mayo. The chips and salsa didn’t really stand out; they were also okay. The chips weren’t too salted and the salsa was watery, but hey, this is a Korean restaurant! The salad tasted like a regular Caesar salad. Honestly, I wouldn’t get the platter again, since it just comes with the sides and salad. The few times I’ve been, the beef rice balls haven’t been cooked consistently. Sometimes they come out piping hot, sometimes lukewarm, and sometimes cold. I think they taste AMAZING when they’re piping hot. The rice is moist, but there’s only a slight flavor to these. I like the subtlety of the rice balls. The chicken here is very meaty! I’m not a huge fan of yang nyum chicken, so I always eat my boyfriend eat most of it. It’s mostly sweet and slightly tangy, though you can argue it’s a TINY bit spicy. I prefer to dip my chicken in the sauces they provide, so I like the fried chicken, which isn’t seasoned on its own. I think the Korean fried chicken here is unique in that you HAVE to dip the chicken in sauce for it to have flavor. If you like pre-seasoned and marinated chicken, go somewhere else for KFC or just order yang nyum. The chicken isn’t that crunchy, but it’s super hot and juicy on the inside. They’ve given me three sauces in the past: the yang nyum sauce, a sriracha mayo, and a sweet soy sauce. My favorite is the sriracha mayo! The pineapple fresh juice comes in a cute cup, and it’s not too sweet. It’s made with real pineapple, which is nice. No fruit chunks, and it’s kind of foamy. Thank U Chicken is a fine place for KFC, but now that so many shops have opened up, I prefer to go elsewhere for the price point and flavor.

Cast Iron Grill – Menu with Prices – 620 19th St, Lubbock

OMG! That was so good! Now I need a nap! I got the free chips and salsa with my Yelp check in. The salsa is fresh and flavorful. It’s not the best ever, but it’s good. I got the chicken fried chicken with both gravy’s to sample. The traditional cream gravy is amazing. Just creamy goodness with the chicken and the mashed potatoes. The green chili gravy gave me pause, but it was good. Boy, it’s got a bite and that’s coming from someone who loves spicy! The chicken was fresh, not greasy. It was crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside, and perfectly seasoned. The mash was creamy and well seasoned. Nothing processed here, just pure potatoey perfection. The waitress recommended the broccoli cheese casserole and what a great call. I loved it. So cheesy and fresh. I also got a roll and it was okay. It might have been better if it had been warm, but I only ended up taking a couple bites. The coconut cream pie was great. The filling is very dense and would have been great with an entire glass of milk. There was not much crust on the bottom, so that was a little sad because I love crust. If you are in Lubbock and want some southern comfort food, try this place out!

Just Jeff’s Street Food – Menu with Prices – 701 Business Loop 70 W, Columbia

Their hotdogs are good. I would return for the hotdogs and tater tots. Their food is very salty though and they do not provide complimentary water. Things to avoid: Their hamburgers are pretty dry. I think they press the burger patty flat which makes it dry and kinda crispy. It’s a weird texture for a burger Their chili sauce, we got it on the tater tots…it was runny and flavorless The nacho cheese…we also got this on the tater tots and it really just tasted like canned cheese Wait can be pretty long to get your food. Seating is only outdoors so they are probably carryout only when the weather gets colder.

Takos Koreanos – Menu with Prices – 8425 S Hosmer St, Tacoma

My significant other and I are foodies and we wanted to try this place out. I’m a fan of tacos, my girlfriend is a fan is Asian cuisine, it’s a match made perfect haha. To start off, we arrived here a little after opening so no crowds and obviously no wait time. I’ll be listing and review each dish we got: Elote: I would like to mention that I haven’t tasted a true elote before so this review is based on NO comparison to the “traditional” elote. 5/5 – Sweat corn, tangy Mayo with a small kick (spice). It was delicious! My other half’s favorite dish. Chicken baraba quesadilla: 4.5/5 – My girlfriend order this and of course I had a small bite (2 slices haha). It was how I imagined it, warm, slight crispy exterior and a nice blend of the slow cooked chicken and the cheese. Place a light layer of sour creme and a little hot sauce…wow. I’m glad the chicken wasn’t hidden by the cheese. The main reason I didn’t give the entire dish a perfect 5/5 is because of the sides that came with the dish. For this dish we chose to do the kimchi fried rice. I felt that it was bland. It lacked that uhmf (flavor). Maybe it could of had more meat and/or more umami. The potato salad was basic. Nothing fancy. Holy cinco combo (5 tacos): of course had to get a variety to really see what they provide. Kalbi – Try it. I’m thinking teriyaki. Spicy chicken – EH, chicken was dry Beef barba & Chicken barba – TRY IT. Honey chipotle shrimp – MUST MUST MUST. Haha. I was honestly afraid that there wasn’t going to be enough shrimp and/or that there would be just plank crumbs instead of shrimp. You get so much textures in this taco. The sweatness if the honey compliments the spice of the chipotle. Adding the crunch from the panko and the freshness of the salad/lettuce. Wow. The side I chose was the bulgogi fried rice. And just like the kimchi fried rice, it really lacked uhmf. Bland. *these individual reviews are based on taste on its own. No sauces (that they provide) included. *per waiter recommendation (which I’ve done) – try eating the taco with just one layer of tortilla. Don’t hate on me now, hear me out for the ones who are applauded by not eating both tortillas. When you eat the taco with just one layer, you really taste and appreciate the meat. I’m not going to lie, eating two layers of tortilla is also good. As mentioned, it’s just a recommendation. *dont forget to squeeze the lime on the taco. Try it with and without. *they give you three different sauces. I forgot which is which but I remember that there’s a mild, medium, and hot. I found that combining the mild and medium on a plate with a nice squeeze of the lime makes a good dipping sauce. OVERALL, I’ll definitely eat here again

Boba Addict – Menu with Prices – 7509 N Willow Ave, Fresno

Probably my favorite boba spot here in Fresno/Clovis area, aside from my favorite chain I-tea. I’ve mostly had their cremas, which is this cheesy topping that is super creamy and fattens up your tea drink. It’s so great! I also like their matcha drinks – very good matcha taste. Lightly sweetened is perfect for me, but I also don’t drink super sweet drinks too much. My favorite drinks are the matcha crema and the jasmine green tea crema. Heavy tea taste for the jasmine GT, which is just the way I like my tea drinks. I can’t speak about their boba topping because I usually do no toppings for my tea drinks (crema doesn’t count). Also honest owners/staff. They were training a new employee that charged an extra topping for my crema (crema drinks are 3.99+tax and do not count as another topping), and I didn’t even know because credit cards make it so easy to spend money without knowing how much you spent (haha). But they approached me to refund my 50 cents. It is definitely much appreciated for a broke medical student. Thank you for bringing quality tea drinks to this area! Of note, they have board games and cute decorations for holidays. Plenty room to socialize. Small parking lot. Can potentially do light studying but does get pretty busy with kids and families.

Tango’s Empanadas – Boise Menu with Prices 701 N Orchard St, Boise

Stopped in for lunch on a Weds around 1:45pm. Busy but not crowded. It is small with limited seating (more on picnic tables outside if the weather permits). About 30 seats pretty tightly packed. Half the folks were doing to-go orders. Floor is worn and the fans need cleaning but otherwise everything is clean and well kept up. I ordered the Tinga chicken with chipotle and the Rancho with chorizo and jalapeños. Good selection of drinks including Jarritos sodas. I asked for and was given a cup and ice so I could take the drink with me. Service was very pleasant and friendly. You order at the counter, pay, get a number and wait to be called. Empanadas are fresh, warm and well filled. In the rancho the cheese overwhelmed the other flavors, so it was more like cheese and jalapeño. Nice heat level from the peppers. I liked the Tinga better, as the flavors of chicken, sauce and chipotle were nicely balanced. Juicy and crispy. Impressed with the number of veggie options and sweet empanadas, would definitely come back to try others. Unless you get a combo with fries, the empanadas don’t come with any sides or veggies. Good food, very reasonable and good service.

Wolfies Pub – Menu with Prices – 274 Forbes Ave, Pittsburgh

As an appetizer, we ordered the buffalo chicken dip, which came with warm pitas. The dip itself was very good. However, the flavor of the dip was overwhelmed by the mountain of bleu cheese, which topped the dip. I like bleu cheese, but they use way too much in this dish and it ends up being all that you can taste. It is unfortunate because the dip without the bleu cheese had a great flavor. For my meal, I went with the bison burger, which was topped with caramelized onions and a garlic aioli. The meat itself had a great flavor, and was cooked as requested. However, the construction of the burger, as well as the bun made it pretty average. Lettuce and tomato were placed under the burger patty. This, along with the other wet ingredients caused the burger to get sloppy. The burger needed some type of topping to provide some friction and prevent all of the sliding that occurred when trying to eat it. In addition, the bun they used seemed cheap. Not only did it taste average, but it fell apart and did not hold up to the wet ingredients and juicy patty. The burger would have been so much better had it been on brioche and either done without the lettuce and tomato, or if they were placed on top. The fries that came with the burger were pretty good, and the homemade ranch was great. My one friend ordered the “Pub Hot Chicken”. Hot chicken, especially with its recent popularity, has come to be known as the type of chicken they serve in Nashville. I was expecting this sandwich to have at least some type of the sweet and spicy sauce, which is traditionally what is being referred to when an item it labeled as “hot chicken”. Instead, the sandwich was nothing more than a fried chicken sandwich, which was overcooked, and topped with a drop or two of chipotle mayo. Overall, the place has some promise, but needs to make some changes to its menu and serving practices.
