*** Vegetarian Review *** If you ever find yourself visiting a friend or family member attending Cal State Fullerton and they ask what do you want to eat, without hesitation, say Izakaya Takasei. They have several vegetarian or vegetarian-friendly appetizers to make up for the lack of main dishes. I’m not sure if they take reservations because when we went, there were about 5 parties of more than 8 waiting for tables. But the takeaway, they were waiting. If you Yelp this area, there are plenty of other places to eat so the fact they were waiting was definitely a great sign. We arrived at 6:30pm and our wait for a party of 7 — 1 hour, 20 minutes. 2 Tips for First-Timers: (1) Make sure to input your name on the waiting list inside. There is an iPad – type your name, number in party, and cell phone. They’ll buzz you when you’re table is ready. When they text you, they give you a link for your estimated wait time. (2) Don’t have holes in your socks if you choose to sit in on the floor section of the restaurant. Comparisons: For Northern California vegetarian Japanese foodies, Ohkura in Fairfield and Akebono offer tempura that is light, crispy, and not greasy. Izakaya is just as light, just as crispy, without that greasy feeling. Dinner Combo, vegetable tempura ($15.50, Grade A): The dinner combos come in a one or two-item option. Vegetarians basically have an option of a double order of vegetable tempura, but it was a good thing it was delicious. Served with miso soup, a bowl of rice, potato salad, and a house salad with special house dressing. The house dressing tastes like an egg yolk-based vinaigrette. These items included sides are standard for many Japanese restaurants and are on par with many Japanese restaurants. With that said, let’s talk tempura. Variety of vegetables include onions, broccoli, carrots, zucchini wedges, and lotus root. All are lightly battered and what I imagine flash fried because they are perfectly crispy without overly greasy. But the true test of vegetable tempura is the broccoli test. Was the crown mushy and just a spongy mess? Glad you asked. Quite the opposite. Crispy and light from the crown to the stem. Cheese Age, 5 pieces ($3.95, Grade C+): Deep fried cheddar cheese and jalapeños wrapped in wonton skins. Sounds great, but sadly, these were a bit greasy and fell flat. They weren’t even crispy. Bottom line, if Panda Express can make cheese rangoons light, crispy, and hot, I was expecting much more. Sauteed Enoki Hackberry Mushrooms with Butter ($4.95, Grade A+): Mushrooms are one of my favorite foods and one of my favorite phrases is “with butter.” It’s not a large side dish, but it’s a very rich tasting dish so having a smaller portion isn’t a problem. The umami meter was off the chart here and with the added texture of the enokis, this dish is a winner. I would come back just to order this side with a bowl of rice and it’s one of those dishes were you wish you had the recipe. Overall restaurant observations: (1) Clean restaurant (2) Friendly and fast service. This was impressive considering the restaurant was full. (3) Plenty of parking Bottom Line: It’s not far from Disneyland if you want a break from churros and pretzels. I would double-check to see if they accept reservations because if you do decide to leave the happiest place on earth, the last thing you want to do is wait in another line that doesn’t include any high speed free falls. The prices are super reasonable — before tip, party of 7. Our bill was a little over $83. Super cheap for Japanese food, but don’t take this as a reason to go all price-hike-crazy Izakaya. You have great food at even greater prices — that’s why people are waiting outside for over an hour for a seat. Definitely will be on our rotation when we visit Disneyland.

Hasu Sushi & Grill I – Menu with Prices – 3551 Blair Stone Rd, Tallahassee

Weekday lunch Oder from Chinese selection and avoid Japanese. (1/5) Seafood Udon noodle soup ($14.95) Not worth the money. Although the price is same as the famous ramen joint in New York City, Ippudo (4 star out of 5390 reviews), it was very bland or a super healthy –no favor. I asked for Shichimi (seven different chili peppers) that must have in any Japanese restaurant. I was offered white peppers instead and didn’t know of Shichimi. It’s like this, if you are at a burger joint and not only have ketchup but do not know of ketchup. (2/5) Vegetable Tempura ($11.95), from regular menu — it was better but I wish the Tempura sauce came with grated Daikon radish to balance off the grease — traditional. (3/5) Agedashi Tofu ($5.50) — surprised of the generous portion. (3/5) Edamame ($4.95) — quality than quantity but acceptable. (3/5) The best flavorful dish was obviously to what the restaurant knew the best — Chinese food, fried rice ($5.95). It was light and fluffy fried rice and was generously served.

Kappo Sui Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 20070 Santa Ana Ave, Costa Mesa

This place has the best authentic Japanese food I’ve had in years. Years. It’s the kind of place a homesick Japanese person could visit and break down crying. For this reason it’s worth getting a reservation, and worth the extra pennies. The menu had many dishes I haven’t seen since I lived in Japan. I ordered komatsuna with atsuage, a spinach-like leafy vegetable with pre-fried tofu splashed with bonito broth seasoning and topped with finely cut nori. Just seeing it nestled in an assymetrical leaf-shaped dish made me happy. My spouse ordered eggplant simmered with duck. Both dishes were prepared carefully, and tasted just like what you’d get in Japan. Bonito, soy sauce, sugar, but not overpowering the flavors of the meats and vegetables. These are the kinds of dishes Japanese businesspeople might order with alcohol for an informal meeting. Our party also ordered a shrimp pancake served with tartar sauce, vegetable tempura, udon, and sushi. The tempura had a slightly heavier batter than what you might find at a tempura-ya in Japan, but lighter than most other Japanese restaurants in the US. They included authentic ingredients such as a green shiso leaf and fresh lotus root, old friends I don’t get to see often. The sushi was amazing. The fish, crab, etc. burst with flavor and melted like butter in my mouth. And the rice was perfectly cooked. It held together as either nigiri or maki, and even odd individual grains left in the soy sauce were delicious. (This is pretty rare.) This is a special place I would take a friend who really knows Japanese food, or who wants to learn about what people in Japan eat. If I make it back next time I’m in town, I’d love to order mozuku (seaweed), grilled mackerel, and other items on the menu.

Kauboi Izakaya – Menu with Prices – 1286 S Virginia St, Reno

I’m not sure how I’ve missed this place for so long! Kauboi is a great spot for groups of people to enjoy a delicious meal. I say “groups of people” because this is really Japanese tapas, and there are so many menu options that you will want to try a little bit (or a lot of bit) of everything; so the more the merrier! Luckily for me, and for many of you, there are wonderful vegan and vegetarian options here. I had the Vegetarian Ramen, Mushroom Gyoza, Edamame, and Veggie Tempura. I did not go home hungry. The breakdown– The Vegetarian Ramen: plentiful, and much more flavorful than many other veggie ramens I have had elsewhere before. The Mushroom Gyoza: yes, yes, a thousand times yes! Whenever there is a vegetarian dumpling option, I seize the day. This particular dumpling was seared perfectly and absolutely divine. The Edamame: standard. The Veggie Tempura: the most deliciously salty, savory, crunchy dish. This was easily one of the best tempuras I have had in my life. My dinner partners enjoyed a variety of meat and seafood dishes including Giant Squid, Chicken Hearts, Crab Croquettes, Shrimp Fritters, Fried rice with Crispy Duck. The list goes on. Kauboi does not take reservations, and they do not do to-go orders, which I admire. This tells me that Kauboi is unwilling to compromise the integrity of their food, as well as the quality of service to their customers that are already seated and awaiting a good meal. The service was more than friendly and the cocktails were on point. I can’t wait to come back!

Suh Sushi Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 165 E Boardwalk Dr, Fort Collins

This restaurant lies on their menu and the management is unwilling to correct the lies. We ordered the “Vegetarian Tempura” under the Vegetarian section. I also ordered the Miso Soup – then realizing that this item might not be vegetarian, I called to check, and this is where things got bad. I was told the Miso Soup is not vegetarian – fine. Then the person on the phone went through the rest of the items to check if they were vegetarian. I was then told that the Veggie Tempura that is sold under the Vegetarian section on the menu is NOT vegetarian – the restaurant told me it is pescetarian and is cooked in the same fryer/oils as their fish. This is not vegetarian and they know it. Then, the person on the phone told me that some of the chefs ALREADY KNOW that the food is labelled vegetarian when it is not and nothing has been done about it. I was also told that another discussion would be had. No action was promised and the items remain on menu being sold as Vegetarian – (except for OrderUp where I have already complained about the tempura being not vegetarian, the single item has been removed there as of this writing). The major issue here is the unwillingness of management to remove the offending items from the Vegetarian menu. It is bad enough that they have sold me fish product and told me they didn’t – but now they also continue to lie about the fish in their vegetarian food. As of this writing their website and online menu shows fish-products sold as Vegetarian food. It is not. This must be illegal. I would not trust them on anything. If they are willing to lie about this, they are willing to lie about everything else. Do not eat here.

Kyoto Sushi Bar & Hibachi Grill – Menu with Prices – 15525 Warwick Blvd, Newport News

Server was nice, I arrived at an early hour for lunch, seated and ordered cucumber salad, sashimi, vegetable tempura, and unsweetened tea. Ordered unsweetened tea but the tea came out to be sweet. I am not sure what I was expecting but I wanted hot brewed tea, I guess that was a little too much to ask and this is probably not a standard Japanese restaurant (which is not opened by Japanese people anyways… It was definitely too much to ask) Cucumber salad was terribly sweet and no flavor. It was just peeled cucumber with syrup and wasabi. The sashimi looked pretty good, very small portion for the price, but I guess it made sense since it was under the appetizer section. The worst was the tempura that I couldn’t even tell it was tempura. The batter was just egg and flour mix, it’s not fluffy at all and the taste was blend. Super disappointing meal overall, but it still deserved 2 stars for not bad service. But I got food poisoned that afternoon, the first time in my life got food poisoned from sashimi. Or maybe it was something else I don’t know. Felt terrible. Save your money somewhere else, Williamsburg is probably worth the drive for better sushi.

Yuu Izakaya – Menu with Prices – 1599 Regent Ave W, Winnipeg

I happened to see this restaurant when I was driving and was starving. I was very hesitant, but I’m glad I came here to eat. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen and some shrimp tempura. The service was very good, and the restaurant was very clean. The pork belly was delicious and the broth was good. It wasn’t too salty or too bland, which tends to happen alot with this dish. The shrimp tempura was good, but the sauce was a little bit on the sweet side. This is normally the case in Canada as restaurants have to overcompensate with sweetness due to the lack of salt. A shame really, but if you are Canadian you are already used to that. I would highly recommend everyone to try this restaurant if you want to eat some Japanese food.

Bakudan Ramen – Menu with Prices – 17619 La Cantera Pkwy #208, San Antonio

Walking in, the decor is beautiful. I love the touch of Japanese culture. It’s not a very big space so if you want a seat, you better get there before 6pm. We had a great server. I don’t know his name but he was very knowledgeable and helpful in letting us know what items are popular, spicy, and his favorite. We went with a party of 8. The majority chose to get the Ramen. My son and I got the Bibimbap. We also tried various appetizers. My daughter got the vegetarian ramen. She said it was bland and had to keep adding soy sauce, which gave it a better flavor. My son got the combination bibimbap with noodles. He really enjoyed it, he loved the flavor. My hubby got the garlic tonkotsu. He was a little disappointed. Although it came out looking deliciously beautiful. It was just beautiful. He said it needed more salt. There was no flavor. He said it was meh. I had the bibimbap with shrimp and noodles. It was DELICIOUS! It did not disappoint and it had plenty of flavor. I did find that the shrimp was a little on the salty side but nonetheless very good!! My hubby and I traded dishes after a while. After tasting his dish, I really did not like it as much as I thought I would. You can definitely taste the garlic but that was the only flavor that I tasted. As much as I love garlic, this was not the best flavor for this fish. On the other hand, my hubby was satisfied with the rest of my dish. We also had the Bakudan edamame, octopus balls, gyoza, and shrimp tempura. The edamame was very good, not spicy at all. The octopus balls were interesting, not a favorite. Nobody liked the consistency or texture of this appetizer. The gyoza was nothing great. The tempura shrimp was the best item out of the appetizers. Overall, this place was alright. I would go back for the shrimp tempura, edamame, bibimbap, and the “Coke” (the use a local vendor for their sodas). Not sure what they put in their cola but I drank like 3 glasses! I don’t really drink soda so that really surprised me. Anyhow…I will be back again, at least I know what to order now.

BONJAPAN86(YAROKU) – Menu with Prices – 990 12th St SE, Salem

TL;DR – solid, small-operation Japanese joint with great flavors in an unexpected part of town, although the wait time is stretching it a bit, even though he has a sign that says he’s a one-man operation. Definitely will be back! _____________________ FOOD The size of the menu is ambitious for a one-man show – this is not just teriyaki chicken on white rice. He has a wide variety of options that I was surprised to see, including oyakodon and curry. – Nabeyaki Udon, $12 – hot clay pot of chewy udon, a piece of shrimp tempura, naruto, and some veg in a tasty broth. It also comes with a bowl of sticky rice that was a little bland, but a nice surprise. I’d definitely recommend for a cold day! – Oyakodon, $9 – my friend got this and it looked pretty good. He was satisfied and said he’d be back to try other things, and that this could be his “safe” dish when he’s not interested in venturing out. SPACE It’s quite an unexpected location off of 12th. One thing I enjoy is that he’s got a dedicated parking lot. Inside, the theme of a”ambitious” continues for this one guy to handle. There are a few booths as well as a couple smaller tables and some counter seats. A few pieces of Japanese decor make it a little quaint. STAFF One more time: it’s the one fella! He’s extremely polite and considerate, letting us and other guests that there might be a wait, and then thanking us for waiting – classic Japanese manners. We did wait quite a while for our food, but I was satisfied!

Tokyo Japanese Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 1000 Hylan Dr, Rochester

My family and I have been going to Tokyo Japanese Restaurant for over 30 years. I have been to many sushi restaurants in town, but when asked for the best sushi in Rochester, there is no other restaurant that I recommend. Chef Yong, his son Tony and his family have been working here for over 30 years as well. They pride themselves in importing the highest quality grade sushi for the best, most consistent dining experience. Not only do they provide Japanese cuisine, but they also offer popular Thai and Vietnamese dishes. Unfortunately their old restaurant was bought out by Delta Sonic so they had to move to a smaller location, but I know they are looking to expand to bring back their popular hibachi tables. While they do not have hibachi tables on site, they do make the best, largest portion of hibachi in town. Tokyo is BY FAR the best Japanese restaurant in Rochester and I cannot wait until they expand into a bigger location.

E. B. Latin Bistro – Menu with Prices – 6505 W Park Blvd suite #136, Plano

I was in Plano for work and live somewhere with a ton of Mexican food. So I did not want Mexican. I’m also a vegetarian so I wanted somewhere with good veggie options. I found this bistro and was immediately sold. They have multiple vegetarian options from tacos to enchiladas to quesadillas to a cubano to a paella. The moment I walked in I was immediately greeted by friendly staff. My entire stay he was very attentive and quick to serve me. He asked if I needed an opinion and when I said I was vegetarian he immediately suggested the paella. So I was sold. While I waited (a very short wait, mind you) for the paella, the chips and salsa came. The chips were thin. Crispy. And not at all greasy. The salsa was delicious. The waiter suggested the mango mojito and while I don’t normally drink them it was so fresh and tasty. Shortly thereafter the paella came. Fresh. Piping hot. Colorful. You could tell all the veggies were fresh. It was truly a vibrant dish, both in color and flavor. The serving size for one was more than enough. Despite being hungry I could barely get close to finishing. The paella dish included yellow squash, onion, peas, broccoli, red and green bell pepper, artichoke heart. And it was outstanding. I was only sad I could not also try the queso dip, guacamole, quesadillas, cubano, and more! I wish this bistro was near me because I would come back again and again to try it all. If I’m ever here for work again I will for sure be eating here again. Excellent service. Laid back atmosphere. Quick service. Outstanding food and drinks. I see why this restaurant has a solid 5 stars.

Treviño’s Flour Tortilla Factory – Menu with Prices – 54 Boca Chica Blvd, Brownsville

The restaurant is bright and clean and their tasty breakfast is a good value. The tacos were really good and weren’t greasy at all. My egg & cheese taco was packed full and the scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly – fully done yet light and fluffy. E. is a stickler for chorizo and said the chorizo in his taco was crispy and delicious. Their flour tortillas were the star of the show. They were perfectly thin, not greasy at all and stayed soft and fresh throughout our meal. On this trip they also served a basket of crispy, cinnamony, sugared banuelos with our meal. What a treat! Service has been just fine too. The only drawback I’ve seen is that I don’t care for the bottled orange juice they serve, but their iced tea was a fine substitute. We may have just found a new favorite Brownsville breakfast spot! orange juice was Tropicana.

Arigato Sushi – Menu with Prices – 11199-A, Lee Hwy, Fairfax

Came here on a Monday night at around 6:30. There were about about 2 tables when we arrived. We were greeted by the chefs (I couldn’t exactly tell what they said because it was in Japanese but I know it meant something along the lines of “welcome”) then the servers prompted us to our seats and took our order. We were given a complimentary small dish of edamame and fried cream cheese I think and our food came out pretty quick as well. We ordered age dashi tofu to start with along with a sushi&sashimi combo, salmon combo, and tempura udon as our meal. Everything tasted great especially the tempura udon. The broth was exceptional! However, I didn’t really like the spicy salmon hand roll. It wasn’t like the typical spicy mayo flavor, it was more of a korean red pepper paste flavor. After we were done eating, the servers quickly took our empty plates and gave us our checks. Nothing extraordinary but overall a fine experience.
