The food, the house, the volunteers – this is the whole package, ladies and gentlemen. Make sure you have an hour to spare, check the calendar to be sure it’s a weekday in September – June, and GO! It’s so worth it! The food is made fresh everyday, and the menu is different everyday (except for the entree salad, which stays the same for a week). You get soup, delicious dinner rolls, a hot entree with sides or the entree salad, and a heavenly dessert. The only choice you get is your beverage, and whether you want the hot or cold entree, so make sure you review their menu online ahead of time. Also, they tend to run out of entree salads, so I would suggest letting them know that’s what you want as soon as you sit down, or if you call and make a reservation, let the hostess know then. The only entree I wasn’t comfortable with in my years of eating there was the game hens, but I probably sacrificed for a delicious dessert they were serving that day. The setting is beautiful inside the turn-of-the-century Barlow home, and it is completely restored. While you are waiting for your food you can marvel at the thick dark wood, painted ceilings, or Tiffany light fixtures. It might seem a bit odd being seated in a room in the house that was clearly a bedroom, but how often does one step foot in a beautifully restored home like this anyway? All staff you will see are volunteers and all proceeds go to a local charity. The hostesses and servers are always pleasant too. It’s a just a win/win. Basically, if you are looking for a healthy and hearty meal – something different from other lunch spots in downtown Bakersfield – you must have lunch at the Guild House. Support a local charity, and support the preservation of a beautiful building in the heart of downtown!

House of Lange at Irvine Spectrum Center – Menu with Prices – 719 Spectrum Center Dr, Irvine

Restored, rejuvenated, healthy, beautiful. This isn’t just how my hair felt after I left, it’s truly how I felt after my appointment! I found this glorious salon during a very very distressed moment on full weekend with no signs of slowing down. I had extension tracks just dangling and falling out brittle dried hair and absolutely no energy to get ready. It was a Sunday late afternoon and called about 5 places who wouldn’t see me or were closing until I called House of Lange and I was told that I could come in within 15-30 minutes!! I arrived on time and was greeted by a friendly front desk staff who offered me drinks and were so kind even though i was beyond distressed and introduced to Nic who is actually the owner! What an amazing beautiful man he is, inside and out! This salon is also beyond gorgeous as well. (Ps. huge plus – they have and use the dysons which is rare!) He washed my hair, fixed up my extensions, put back the ones that had fallen out then styled me to perfection!! I had a huge party that night and my hair was so perfect it even lasted all through the next day!!! He suggested some products and offered if I wanted to come and get my extensions moved up (it was about that time anyways) he would be more than happy to help. I decided to make an appointment to come back for a move up because I really loved Nic. I think he has an amazing talent intuitively and I just really connected with him. I also loved the values and support House of Lange provides for all types of people and the community. They also only have natural and cruelty free products! There are very few businesses and people left that operate with any sense of morality and integrity so It was a no brainer to want to come back and support them! When I returned poor Nic had his work cut out for him. He took out ALL my extensions, had everyone help clean off ALL the goopy old tape to restore them back to new, he treated my own hair and restored it so well it was literally a different color even though we didn’t dye it. I have never ever seen my hair this shiny and healthy before since I was a baby growing brand new hair! He put my extensions back in with a new superior and specialized tape they use (hot heads) styled me back up and I literally couldn’t be happier. I finally love my hair again!!! He sent me home with some new products to use to maintain my hair until I get to see him again! Thank you Nic and everyone at House of Lange! You are the BEST salon and I love you guys endlessly!!

Spitale’s Deli & Catering – Menu with Prices – 3309 Division Street, Metairie

I think that I found my new favorite lunch spot in Metairie! I love that they have lunch specials everyday. We went on a Monday and had the red beans with rice lunch special. It was a nice large serving. The smoked sausage was delicious! It made the dish. It came with two pieces of garlic bread and a salad. The bread was tasty and the salad was good. I opted for their house dressing. It was very yummy. I ordered an ice tea. They gave me a nifty plastic to go cup with their logo. I totally dug that. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The decor was fun. Very New Orleans! The place was clean. The TVs were much appreciated. I will be back!

Q Haute Cuisine – Menu with Prices – 100 La Caille Pl SW, Calgary

This was our final stop for lunch before leaving Calgary to head back home. We made reservations ahead of time on opentable to celebrate my birthday with a pretty amazing 3 course lunch. It’s a prix fixe for $25 CAD. If you opt out of dessert, it’s $20 CAD. Can’t beat these prices for the quality of food you receive. You’ve got quite a few choices for each category. For our first one, we chose the simple salad served with beets and also potato salad. The simple salad was dressed and seasoned well, generous with beets. We had a small issue with the salad but it was easily replaced with many apologies. They rectified the situation immediately and I appreciated their concern and how they handled everything. Kudos to the people who work there. The potato salad was also delicious and seasoned well. Loved the contrast of potatoes and crispy toppings. For our second dish, I went with the braised brisket served with carrots. We also had the pork belly. Both entrees were fantastic and extremely flavorful. Lots of beautiful touches and very pleasing to the palate. Amazing. For dessert, I had the cheesecake which was served with a candle. We also had the ice cream sandwich. Although both were great, I was mostly blown away by the entrees. Service was fantastic. Had a house martini to go with my meal while G had a glass of wine. Cute spot. Extremely clean. Limited parking spots in the lot so your best bet is on the street. Even with a snafu, loved my experience here and would return in a heartbeat.

Savor The Moment Bakery & Dessert Cafe – Menu with Prices – 1117 Coliseum Blvd, Greensboro

Omg! Omg! Ohhh emmm geee!! What are you doing right now?! If it’s not getting into your car and heading over to Savor the Moment Bakery & Dessert Cafe at 1117 Coliseum Blvd then you are giving me the wrong answer! Okay.. okay…I may be being a little dramatic because it’s technically closed right now, but go TOMORROW, they’ll be open and you can thank me later! It’s Valentine’s Day and after following their Instagram account for weeks and admiring all of the great events that Savor the Moment offers to the community, some events are even free, for adults and kids alike (chess club, teen baking, mystery book club, and history round table), I just had to give them a visit. I mean, how many local bakeries do you know of that are enriching their community to be better and do better everyday! I met the owners, they are a beautiful family. The husband and wife duo are great and tremendously friendly, representing for the small local business in the right way. James and his young and ever so cute daughter immediately welcomed us and gave us plenty of ideas of what are his favorite treats to try. I also met his wife who gave us some of the most moist pound cake to try. Not too sweet but completely melts in your mouth. I tried the butter pecan and Jarett tried the plain, both were mouth watering. Lastly, we met another member of the family, their young son, who is also a cutie. In total I believe they have five children, and I think it’s great to see an entire family supporting one another, you can really feel the family bonding in the essence of this place! Okay, finally let’s get to the food! In addition to trying the pound cake we ordered 2 strawberry cheesecake sundaes, one for my mom and one for Jarett and I to share! The sundae contained layers of fruit, whipped cream, and both pound cake and cheesecake. You could also choose up to 2 free toppings! The dessert was perfectly moist, sweet, fruity, and delicious! Truly everything you could ask for and want in a desert. Not too presumptuous with unnecessary frills, simplistic and down right tasty. Please! I can’t stress this enough, SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES! They are what makes your city YOUR city, what gives your city and it’s locals their character and charm! Support those who support you!

Mocha My Day Menu with Prices 1081 Colony Dr Suite 100, Alpharetta

Mocha My Day made our day! Last October we held our annual 5K/Fun Run for our charity, The Forsyth BYOT Benefit, and we invited Mocha My Day to be a vendor. Todd and his team were amazing! They were set up even earlier than we had asked, and were ready to go with coffee and smoothies for the runners, volunteers, and their families! They did a great job and were such an asset to our event. I would absolutely recommend them! !

Charity Fent Cake Design – Menu with Prices – 3534 E Sunshine St suite f, Springfield

CF Cake Design was recommended to me by our wedding photographer. I was told that if I wanted a beautiful and delicious cake, that she is the best. My (now) husband and I met Charity at a wedding expo for our cake tasting â?? we decided to go with a white cake, triple berry filling, and buttercream frosting. I wanted a clean and classic look for our three-tiered cake with champagne and white colored gum paste flowers for the top. A month or so after our tasting it was time to decide on the flowers for the top of the cake. My (now) husband and I had recently visited Charleston and fell in love with Magnolia Plantation while we were there, so we knew we wanted at least one of the flowers to be a beautiful magnolia blossom. My absolute favorite flowers are peonies, so I requested that as our other flower â?? I wanted them to be a beautiful champagne color to match our wedding colors. Charity suggested that I also pick a filler flower to fill in any spaces that would be left on the top of the cake, so I chose hydrangeas. Several times I made it clear that I wanted both the magnolia and peonies to be the main flowers on the top of the cake, so if the cake size needed increased to accommodate both, that would be fine. I was reassured that the current cake tier sizes would be sufficient, so the flowers and cake remainder were paid for and we waited anxiously for our wedding day to arrive. Our wedding day arrived and our ceremony was beautiful. We had hired a wedding coordinator to set-up our reception venue, as we didnâ??t want a family member to stress over such details. When we arrived at the reception venue, our wedding coordinator met my husband and I outside and informed us that everything was set-up and beautiful, but there was an issue with the cake. We were told that Charity had informed our coordinator that both the magnolias and the peonies were too large for our top tier of the cake, so Charity had made the decision to use only the magnolia and hydrangea flowers â?? and both were plain white. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed, but I tried to not let it ruin our day. Whatâ??s upsetting is the fact that we still had to pay for all of the gum paste flowers that were used, even though none of my beloved peonies were used on the cake. I will note that the cake was very moist and delicious. Itâ??s too bad it did not have the aesthetic appeal that we had requested for our special day.

All Water Seafood & Oyster Bar – Menu with Prices – 1000 1st Ave, Seattle

Man, if you’re craving good and well seasoned seafood, come here. I was looking for a place that didn’t just put butter and white wine on their seafood and All Water is the place. We decided to go for restaurant week and was blown away. I found it very easy to find, we hate driving/parking downtown so the bus stop was just 2 blocks away. The restaurant is inside the Loews hotel downtown. The service was excellent and we were provided each part of the meal in a timely manner and promptly after we finished each one. First off, we made it for happy hour their house wine and draft beers selection was wide enough. I go the house Chardonnay and my husband got the porter draft. You must get the truffle fries. So. Dang. Good. For restaurant week, I got the soft shell crab toast which had avocado spread, salad with blue cheese that matched the crab in a way I never would’ve realized. My husband got the beet salad, which I was decent. Our entree selection were the halibut -AHHMAZING & the Bouillabaisse. My husband enjoyed the bouillabaisse: it had a great seafood broth and the seafood in it was plenty. The halibut was perfect. From the peas, mushrooms, and the dressing around it was delicious. I would order both again! Dessert was a peanut butter chocolate brownie, which was as expected and the beignets were the perfect bite- it had lemon curd and fresh raspberries! I’m so glad I chose this restaurant for Seattle Restaurant week. I’d go back for oysters!

The Alice Collective – Menu with Prices – 272 14th St, Oakland

Art, Coffee, Biscuits Come Together in Downtown Oakland At Alice Collective Café you get beautiful art, great coffee and some of the best darned biscuits around. Located in the historic Holmes Book Company building, this multifaceted space houses an art gallery, event space, café, and a commissary kitchen that serves as an incubator for small local food start-ups. On my recent visit, there was a great art exhibit curated by Vessel Gallery. The café has high ceilings and is roomy and spacious inside. There are also two plant-filled outdoor areas where you can sit back, relax and stay cool — even in 90’F weather! But if art is not your thing — and I would encourage you to check out this exhibit anyway — then you’ll probably want to hang out with your laptop and a cup of delicious Red Bay Coffee (who designed the café coffee program). But be sure not to sleep on the café’s food menu. Which brings me to the biscuits. A good biscuit is one of those simple things that can be done really well or horribly wrong. There is no middle ground. It will either be like a nice firm pillow or solid and dense like a doughy brick. These biscuits are definitely in the former category. Exec Chef Lance Dean Velasquez has created a small café menu that makes use of house prepared items. And the biscuits are definitely the star of the show. On our visit, we started with the Biscuits and Pork Sausage Gravy. Surrounding the deeply golden brown buttermilk biscuit is a white pepper gravy. Like a baked fortress surrounded by a moat of creamy goodness. We dove right in. The flavors were warm and comforting. Like sitting in your kitchen on a cool Sunday morning might feel like. The white pepper was was a nice way to make the gravy as opposed to my more common experience of black pepper. I may have to try that at home. My companion and I shared the Cheddar and Sausage Biscuit and the “Sweet and Savory” Biscuit. The homemade Duroc pork sausage had a nice flavor and was not overly spicy. It tasted like a leaner version of a good breakfast sausage. The Sweet and Savory is a ham, Swiss cheese, and seasonal sandwich. The combination of Dijon mustard with apricot jam had the right amount of sweet and spicy to go along with the ham and biscuit. I could see making this as a regular lunch staple every day. Each of the sandwiches comes with an arugula salad on the side, lightly dressed, plus a few pickled vegetables thrown into the mix. As my lunch companion said, “They are good because they use *real vegetables*”. I’m pretty sure they pickle the vegetables in house as well. If you’re looking for a good place to hang out in a beautiful setting, grab truly good coffee, and have some delicious food during your day, Alice Collective Café is definitely worth a visit.

A Place at the Table – Menu with Prices – 300 W Hargett St #50, Raleigh

My daughter and I visited A Place at the Table for breakfast before her train ride to WDC. There wasn’t much on the breakfast menu that interested us so we opted for lunch. My turkey club sandwhich was a little on the dry side however, of the volunteers was nice enough to bring condiments to my table. My daughter had the melt and really liked it. The guac on the side was fresh and tasty. I hear they are expanding to a larger which will be lovely for the community. The concept alone should inspire everyone to pay them a visit. I would like to go back to volunteer at some point. Consequently, I did notice there were way too many volunteers there that morning. The volunteers outnumbered the patrons considerably. To be fair I assume it gets busy Saturday mornings and they were there to offset that crowd but because it is such a small space it felt a little overwhelming. There was someone hovering over us the entire time wanting to be helpful, I’m sure.

Gypsy Kitchen – Menu with Prices – 555 W James St, Lancaster

After living very close to Franklin and Marshall for many years, I had no idea that this place existed. It took some good friends to invite me out to lunch and explain to me how to get there. First — directions. If on Harrisburg Pike, turn right onto College Ave, as if you were going into the city. Go past the first two side streets on the left. In the next block you will see the entrance to the Lancaster Theological Seminary on the left — Gypsy Kitchen is in the back off this entrance. (Don’t worry — there is a sign out front which is small and low, but it alerts you to having found it.) Parking is tough, so park in one of the back-in spaces on the street. Also many of my friends used the next street over to park and walked through the back of the property. Second — Decor. This is such an interesting place as it is located in the refectory (room for communal meals in an educational or religious setting). There are high ceilings with exposed beams, a beautiful fireplace, a few individual tables, and a lot of long tables. The windows are of soldered glass. There are also tables outside. Lastly — The food. The food was delicious ! You order at the front table, they make the food and then deliver it to your table. At the end you pay back at the table. Water is in a cooler on the side. The menu was very interesting. From a BLAT (BLT with avocado), to soup, to a Greek Salad, to dinner type entrees, there is something for everyone. I had the salmon which was cooked to perfection and very yummy. They are open for lunch everyday from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, and for dinner on Friday and Saturday from 6 PM to 9 PM.Now that the secret is out. . . give it a try !
