I have been walking by Green Basket for nearly a year now without really giving it a second thought. I would stop in sometimes for beer, or ice, or milk, but never really taking a moment to look around. My boyfriend lives down the block and he and his roommates would talk about how great it is, order sandwiches from there, etc, but I just figured that that was people being happy about their local bodega. Wrong. This is so much more and better than a typical bodega. I stopped in last night, thinking I would get an egg and cheese–or if I was lucky maybe a salad. They have a whole create your own salad section, which I never even realized! Perfect, except now that I was looking around, I learned that they have tons of Vegetarian-friendly sandwiches including one with VEGAN BACON. Vegan bacon at this rando bodega in bushwick!!! My life has been changed. I ordered the “Sandy witch” but I subbed out vegan cheese for brie–I got vegan bacon, brie, hummus, spinach, tomato, AVOCADO, on a roll. For $4.50. Like WHAT. WHAT. Why have I been so blind? I need to start believing in people/bodegas more. In these tumultuous times it is hard to believe the best in people, but this bodega has given me a newfound optimism in the world. God bless you, Green Basket.

Pop-a-Top: General Store – Menu with Prices – 201 SE Depot Ave, Gainesville

If you’ve never been to Pop-A-Top, I don’t know where you have been in Gainesville!! My favorite bodega, I love that I can always pop in here and find the best food, treats and drinks! The staff doesn’t always seem the most-upbeat or happiest to see you, but they sure make up for it in product! I’m not usually a baked goods kinda girl, but the pastry selection here has become a traditional stopping point for me when downtown. As someone who is dairy-free, it’s amazing to have the delicious vegan options like Muffins, Banana Bread and so much more. Even when the pastry isn’t vegan, it still ends up leaving with me. ? There are also amazing meal options! Whether you opt for a fresh salad, sandwich or reheatable meal, it’s made by the same great folks responsible for the yummy food at The Top across the street! I absolutely love their Breakfast Burritos but wish so much that they offered a dairy-free/vegan option, seeing that so many of the GNV community is vegan and the delicious burritos are covered in cheese lol. (I’ve actually bought one and sat and picked out the cheese, I wanted it badly but didn’t want to be sick!) I am happy that they have brought back Cashew Cream Cheese! Love Pop-A-Top!

Noah’s Naturals – Menu with Prices – 3020 Floyd Ave, Modesto

We were searching for vegan options while in this area and came upon this place. So much more than vegan sandwiches and organic smoothies, it’s also a health food store with every type of supplement and all-natural product you can think of. All of us had vegan sandwiches and they were so delicious and filling! A great change from meat sandwiches, from the hummus to the cucumber, vegan cheese and jalapeño, everything was SUPER fresh, and for $8 it was well worth it. We found a bunch of all-natural products we’d been looking to try for some time and couldn’t find them anywhere else, and the lady who made our sandwiches was full of great information and tips on certain other products to give a try.

Central City Market Menu with Prices 405 Linden St, Allentown

Breakfast. If you want a simple bacon egg and cheese, this is the spot. It starts with a fresh cracked egg paired with Boar’s Head cheese and bacon. Breakfast places should take note on this simple but excellent deli, eggs should be cracked fresh, cheese melted to keep the bacon in place for every bite, and bread should be simple, kaiser or white(toasted). On top of that it is a bodega with an assortment of drinks and snacks. I can’t stop there, let’s talk customer service. I made it known to the cook, that this was hands down my favorite place for a quick breakfast bite. He was intrigued by my awareness of how he made the sandwich and he continued with the comparisons of the other area breakfast places. But at the end of all of this, I find that he was the owner and operator, nonchalantly speaking to every customer with respect and comfort. I’d like to thank him for creating a comforting environment for customers, as well as producing great simplistic breakfast sandwiches.

Sunset Bagels Bay Ridge – Menu with Prices – 8624 5th Ave, Brooklyn

I honestly don’t get the hate I’m reading in other reviews. Seems to be about their cost. OK, I get it; they aren’t the cheapest place around. But the prices are competitive in today’s market, rather than that of a decade ago (which seems to be what the other reviewers are expecting); and certainly understandable when stacked against other bagel delis that are at the same level of service, cleanliness, breadth and depth of menu, etc. In short, if you want bodega pricing, go to a bodega. If you want deli quality, go to a deli. This is a deli. As for the food: everything I’ve tried, I’ve loved. And I have yet to find a place that stuffs their bagels and sandwiches as fully as Sunset Bagels. I mean, I can hardly get my mouth around a loaded bagel w/ lox & cream cheese, whereas at other places, I’m routinely disappointed. (Brownstone Bagels is an exception – they also do a great job.) . I don’t always get the same people taking my order or making my food, but I consistently get sandwiches that could easily be two meals. And the ingredients are so fresh! I’ll post a pic of my last bagel w/ lox, cream cheese, red onion, & tomato and you can see what I mean. Cleanliness, organization, amount of choice: all great, in my opinion. Whatever shortcomings their other stores may have, I don’t know. This is the one I go to.

University of Colorado Boulder: Center for Community Dining – Menu with Prices – 2249 Willard Loop Dr, Boulder

Pretty good food. Gets a little old after eating the same food for a few years but holds up decently well. If you are vegan there are some good options but be cautious of mislabeled items. There have been multiple times where something was labeled as vegan but was a cheese pizza or bread with cheese on it. After asking whether alternative cheese the workers confirm it is not. I have had occasions where the label is never changed or where it changes right away depending on the worker.

Speggtacular Clearwater Beach – Menu with Prices – 770 S Gulfview Blvd, Clearwater

Had Cobb salad. While it was good it was definitely missing a traditional Cobb salad ingredient. Egg. No hard-boiled egg. It was more like a Chef/Cobb salad mix. It was a large salad with lettuce, red/green peppers, white onions, mixed cheese, tomatoes, bacon, ham, grilled chicken, and avocado. Now this isn’t normally what I would get here but we walked there, I was hot, and I really wanted something cold. Salad was cool. Bleu cheese dressing was also just cool. It was still good but not a Cobb salad I would recommend in the traditional sense. If you liked the combination I described then def try it. If not try one of their many other breakfast items. Those are def tasty.

Two Wheel Inn – Menu with Prices – 4433 Auburn St, Rockford

went in after work to unwind and after a few drinks decided to head home, Sandy convinced me to stay and have a sprite, asked me more than once if I was OK to drive and a few others made sure I was, thank you to Sandy and the WSWB’s for making sure I was safe and made it home

Harvest Moon Bagel Co – Menu with Prices – 47 N Queen St, Lancaster

Harvest Moon Bagel is just a few blocks down from the convention center, making it an attractive option for a quick breakfast. Interior is small with some seating, but becomes hard to access they are crowded. There is really nowhere to stand for people waiting. Menu includes bagels, sandwiches, and pastries with some vegan options. Various beverages are available in the cooler. Ordered a Classic Egg and Cheese with Bacon on a plain bagel, no cheese. The bacon immediately raises the price of the sandwich to $7. I did receive my order in a reasonable amount of time with how busy they were. This sandwich left a lot to be desired and was small. The bagel wasn’t good, had poor taste, and was too chewy with the toppings adding no flavor. I’ve had better at Burger King, McDonald’s, and my local bagel place. The orange juice while expensive was good. For over a $10 breakfast, I wouldn’t return here.

Custom Cup Coffee – Menu with Prices – 319 E Monroe St, Springfield

Great food! The Vegan options for pastries are nice, a bit pricey for the size of a donut($3.00) and a teacake but tasty ($4.50). Lunch doesn’t start until 11 so if you have a grilled cheese in mind for breakfast forget about it! But you can get a fried egg sandwich with cheese and bacon but not just a grilled cheese. The Vegan taco pot pie is flavorful and hearty, I even loved the vegan sour cream; they should go easier on the onions in the pico. My 1st visit I had a small cup of decaf… I tried it again today, it was decent; I think I’ll stick to my $1.29 cups of coffee at McDonald’s. Over all its a cool little spot expect to spend at least $15 each visit and remember to support small businesses! #shopsmall #vegan #coffee

Dirt Burger – Menu with Prices – 407 E 5th St, Des Moines

I was in town visiting family when my friend had mentioned to me that DSM had opened a newer vegan burger place, and since DSM wasn’t very vegan friendly while I was living there, I’ve been working hard at creating an extensive list of vegan friendly establishments for my yearly trip. Originally we were supposed to dine elsewhere, however, plans changed and we were suddenly off to an event that had zero vegan friendly food, with the exception of condiments, so I hopped onto my bookmarked restaurants and this place was a quick 10 minutes away. I’m not HUGE of vegan fast food, but I knew the fiancé would enjoy and I was borderline hangry. I ordered The Austin BBQ per cashier’s suggestion, and my fiancé had the original. We also ordered two colas with just about every sauce on the side imaginable (I like to have options with the fries my fiancé always orders for me … I mean him). I must say I was pleasantly surprised with all of the food. I appreciate the fact that they do not have cashew based cheese like many other vegan places (they use Teese). However, the “cheese” wasn’t quite melted on the burger, and being someone who has tested out every fake cheese under the sun, I know for a fact that Teese cheese will melt and stretch like “real” cheese when melted properly and idk what vegan ranch they use, but it’s gross, so skip the ranch and get their spicy mayo instead. Fries are amazing AF and worth every.single.calorie. I will most likely stop in again during a future visit to the grand ol’ DSM region, and suggest you do the same.

Lemon Tree Co. Menu with Prices 224 N 10th St, Boise

“Don’t let your inner demons Take the best of your creeds. If God gives you lemons, You must plant the seeds. Do not be so self-absorbed That you can’t see the tree. If you succumb to what’s morbid You bury your chance to be free.” â?? A.C. Antunes Lemon Tree is my new favorite sandwich shop in the Boise area! Why the heck did I wait so long to visit?? I wish they’d deliver or do business with couriers who deliver to my neck of the woods. If fresh, inventive sandwiches and salads are your jam, then I implore you to pay Lemon Tree a visit. Are you vegan or vegetarian? Your dietary needs are not a mere after-thought here. Such care has gone into developing delicious options for all diets here. Have you a special need or question about ingredients? Just ask, and the young, bouncy staff will patiently answer your questions, and they will find a way to meet your needs. Ask for breadless sandwiches if bread is not on your approved list, for example. Or get soup of the day and a salad. As for me, I adore bread and whole grains. The fresh, crusty bread that was soft on the inside, that was part of the vegan and meat sandwiches I had on two separate visits here were bursting with flavor and overfilled, which I welcome! You really get your money’s worth here, big time! Just pick up your fork and eat up those yummy spillings. Make sure you wipe your face thoroughly afterward. Don’t end up as I did, with a few scraggly crumbs hanging onto my kinda sweaty face, as I was walking around afterward and did not discover ’til about 30 minutes later when I looked in a mirror and nervously laughed. Hubby says “Don’t be a Slopahontas”. (He has perhaps a smidgeon of indigenous Native American blood and I’m E. Indian by ethnicity, so Yelp, please don’t take down this review for a term that is not mean to be offensive to anyone. I mean, goodness me, the PC biz is very real and very scary in so many cases these days. I could write a few essays on that topic alone, but I’ll bite my tongue now.) They do not skimp on the lettuce and other produce that, in most sammy shops, has that sad stale taste that most sammy shops have. This is NOT your run-of-the-mill sandwich!! Subdued/normal-ish appetites will likely be satiated with half a sandwich. Larger/bear-ish appetites like mine will be glad to scarf down a full sandwich. At visit #1, I ordered the Veggie Reuben sandy, made of “pastrami-spiced” yams that had a zippy flavor that got along well on the sandwich playground with the apple and lime slaw and a pleasingly mild sauerkraut. The vegan cheese was not made with soy but had a coconut base, I was told. (I am compelled to avoid soy for my constitution.) The sammy playground bully was the mustard. I had to scrape as much of it off as I could. It was too much and overpowered the yams and other ingredients. The sandwich was also a little liquidy-feeling. Otherwise, I really enjoyed it and I do want to get it again. I also look forward to getting more vegan dishes here! At visit #2, I ordered the Sausage & Pear sandwich, which had juicy, leaner, yummy morsels of pork? sausage and thinly-sliced green pears. I couldn’t discern a fennel taste in the fennel jam, but no matter. Oh, those pecans added the perfect crunchy nutty flavor to this one! The whipped goat cheese was just right. Both salads I ordered were of ace quality, and better than what you normally get in a side salad! I prefer the beet salad over the cafe namesake salad, but I do have a roasted root vegetable fixation. Order at the counter, take a number placer, and they will deliver to your table. Please tip these very nice kids well and also at least partially bus your own table. Sit outside on the beckoning patio or inside. I fancied the upstairs indoors on my visits, as I wanted the experience of a more aerial view and more intimate-feeling space, even though I was all by my lonesome both times. Sometimes I get overstim

Skrimp Shack – Menu with Prices – 1103 Silas Creek Pkwy, Winston-Salem

I was so excited when I found out that a Skrimp Shack would be coming to Winston Salem. Having first stumbled upon them and trying it when visiting family in Norfolk, we were impressed by the portion size for the price you pay. We went to the one occasionally in Greensboro before it changed names and most recently one in Newport News. All three places the portions were very hearty and enough for two people to make a meal out of one basket (if they so choose). This was not the case (in my opinion) when we dined here. I had the Skrimp and Whiting basket which was similar in portion size as I have had at other places, however my husband had the Skrimp basket and it seemed like a very small amount compared to the other locations. We asked for an extra tarter sauce and was told it would be 50 cents. We have never had to pay for an extra before. We will give it another chance eventually and hope it is just a matter of working out all of the kinks.
