RIP Golden Bay. The OLD you. The you that, for the last three years, reliably cooked delicious Cantonese foods, and became a regular place for family dinners. By the standards of Brooklyn, you were very good and came to mind faster than many other restaurants when someone asked for a recommendation. Alas, it’s been half a year and I failed to do due diligence. You see, I didn’t know an imposter hijacked your name and good reputation. Unwittingly, I find out as one dish after another paraded out, unforgettable at best, unappetizing at worst, and priced at least 25% higher than previously. And yet, if only that was all I had to look back on! Hell-bent on creating an exquisitely tortuous experience was our arrogant, presumptuous waiter, his disdain barely disguised, his every recommendation falling flat, and his most aggressive upsell the worst dish of all: a sticky, cloyingly sweet, soggy mess masquerading as eggplant and egg tofu. Unwanted, he haunted the table, relentlessly reminding us how good his recommendations were, yet nowhere near for timely plate changes, beverage refills, or even the check. After an attempt to grandly pass off humble snow fungus as bird’s nest in our sweet soup netted him a not-so-gentle take-down from my mother, he (perhaps) sensed discontent and brought a second round of complimentary dessert, then promptly spoiled this small act of conciliation by arguing that we must take the unfinished portion home or it will reflect badly on him. So here we are, my dear departed Golden Bay. Those chefs and staff who made you good have moved on to greener pastures, and I’ll have word-of-mouth take me there. For everyone else, be warned, only a cheap copy remains here, with at least one waiter eager to orchestrate a dinner from hell for you. Chefs for dim sum are often different from those for other food preparation, so I have nothing to say about the current state of dim sum (previously excellent), but I won’t be back to find out.

Duck Duck Goose Menu with Prices 814 S Broadway, Baltimore

Really have to hand it to Duck Duck Goose for making my friend’s birthday dinner an unforgettable experience. We decided to pop in here because the Choptank next door had a ridiculous wait time. We were initially hesitant when Duck Duck Goose said they could seat all 9 of us, RIGHT NOW. Even though the ambiance of this place screams high-end, the staff made us feel welcome even though we weren’t all dressed-to-impress. The drinks were amazing. The Golden Goose was great but for 18 dollars seemed a little out-there and the gold leaflets were unnecessary. The french beer on the menu (won’t attempt to spell it here) was also BEYOND refreshing. They brought out bread with a sweetened butter that was killer!!! I ordered the English Pea Risotto with the Duck Confit ($5 extra) and if you get a bite of the risotto, pea, duck, and goat cheese, then you’ve captured exactly what this dish intended. Unfortunately, after a few bites, the duck is overwhelming and becomes all you can taste. Still delicious though! I also tried the lamb main dish and that was excellent but the lamb was definitely left to shine on its own (no crazy seasonings). The highlight of the night came when we mentioned our friend’s birthday to the waiter who came out with a full round of complimentary champagne for the table along with a sparkler for the birthday. IT was breathtaking. We didn’t expect anything, but hoped for maybe a dessert for my friend or something. This was above and beyond. THANK YOU Duck Duck Goose for making this one to remember.

Urban Tandoor – Menu with Prices – 8125 N Academy Blvd, Colorado Springs

Overall, the restaurant and food were great. Once the service catches up with everything else, I think this place could be a fantastic restaurant. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside, and tastefully decorated. There was lively music and even a wall playing music videos as well. It was very tasteful in decor and I was surprised that it was much nicer than expected (I certainly felt underdressed in leggings and a tee), but it was still comfortable. Our waiter was a very sweet young man who promptly brought us water and menus. We ordered our dinner and he was honest in saying he had no idea how to spell what we ordered and playfully asked to see the menu to write it down. He was great, since we couldn’t pronounce our dishes anyways. I can’t remember the names of the dishes, but one was a lamb kebob and one was a chicken kebob. About 5 minutes after ordering, our waiter returned and told me the lamb kebob I ordered couldn’t be made because they were lacking the ingredients. Not troubled by this I just ordered another lamb-based dish. About 15 minutes later, my husband’s chicken kebab was brought out. I was very surprised to see that, for $18, his dish consisted of about 6 cubed pieces of chicken and a side of sauces to dip them in. It hardly looked like an appetizer and for the price, I had been expecting more. He was disappointed, to say the least. My food hadn’t been brought out, so we continued to wait. He didn’t want to eat without me – since he’d be done rather quickly – so we continued to wait. In the meantime, who I assume was one of the owners of the restaurant came by and asked us how things were. I simply told her fine, and that was that. About 15 minutes after my husband’s food was brought out, our waiter returned to the table with a to-go bag with my food. Upon seeing the puzzled look on my face, he said “this wasn’t supposed to be to-go, was it?” When I told him no, that I’d been planning to eat at the restaurant with my husband, he apologized and said that he had been told we’d asked for my food to-go. We did not speak to anyone else but the owner of the restaurant, and certainly never said we wanted my food to-go. He was very confused by this and after insisting I didn’t want my dinner to-go, he apologized again and quickly brought the food out again in a bowl this time. The portion was very small for $18 as well and I was very put-off by the price of the food. The flavor was great and thankfully the food was mild. Overall it took almost 45 minutes to have our food brought out after ordering – and 15 minutes of that was after my husband’s plate was taken out. I have no idea how it got conveyed I wanted my food to-go, but between that, the wait time, and the price of the minimal food received, my husband and I decided we wouldn’t be coming back. The waiter was very kind and apologized again, as well as removed my food from the receipt so we didn’t need to pay for it. Once we’d finished eating, the owner of the restaurant came up to us again and asked how our experience was. I was candid and told her honestly that we were displeased and didn’t plan on coming back. At first I don’t think she understood what I’d said because she just smiled and walked away. As we were finishing up our dinner, the owner came by again and asked me why I said we weren’t coming back. I explained our experience, and the reason I gave 3 stars is because of how genuine she was. I work in customer service and I value good service over most everything else. The owner was very sincere with her apology for our experience and was more upset that we didn’t enjoy ourselves than anything else. She brought us a gift card to use for our dinner that night and asked us to please consider them again in the future. I was really touched that she cared as much as she did and it meant a lot that she took the time to speak with us and try to resolve

The Drunken Crab – Menu with Prices – 416 State St, Santa Barbara

The food was terrible. We ordered the fish and chips with two different types of fries. The fish sme in the shape of a few dark brown cylinders which were supposed to be batter but whatever was used around the fish was an extremely soggy and oily concoction that was not anything like the expected crispy , golden beer batter. The fish itself inside was sparse and tasteless. We didn’t bother to finish the sweet potato fries, again a mushy, soft pile of ruined food. We had been recommended the Louisiana sausages as a side dish. They came in chunks inside a clear plastic bag set on the wax paper on the table, so you had to dig into the grease up to your wrist to reach them. They were extremely salty but at least they were identifiable as some type of cured meat. As soon as we had given up on our food, a waiter came to sweep the wax paper from under our hands, although we were the only customers there except from one other person. During the meal I had to go to the bar counter to refill my glass of water, as nobody came. To finish on a postive note, the waiter and the host were very pleasant and friendly.

Fremont Afghan Kabob – Menu with Prices – 5379 Mowry Ave, Fremont

Had dinner here tonight for my mom’s birthday. Food was really good and service was even better! We ate chicken and beef kabobs, potato bolani, an eggplant dish, and a chicken and rice dish with carrots and raisins. The green sauce on the table was amazing! Portions were large, we had lots of leftovers to take home. We brought my mom’s bday cake with us, and the restaurant kept it cold for us during dinner and brought it out at the end. They even gave us a couple candles which was awesome since I forgot to bring some. And our waiter joined in the birthday song and took pictures for us. All was really nice and much appreciated!

Miss Li Henan Cuisine Inc. 1?é£?å ? – Menu with Prices – 133-49 Roosevelt Ave, Flushing

Can I count on this? Can I count on my first meal in Queens on any given trip making it onto my lifetime top ten list? Because I’ve eaten in Queens on two trips as an adult and it’s happened both times. Last time it was Hug Esan in Elmhurst. This time it’s Miss Li Henan in Flushing. I had two dishes: Luoyang Beef Soup with Bing Si ??, ordered medium spicy, and a tomato/egg dish. It’s the beef soup that found a place on my top 10. Beefy, agreeably spicy broth, was so flavorful it brought tears to my eyes. Lifetime top ten good. The bing si turned out to be sort of like putting thin dried pie crust in my soup. It’s served beside the soup. I didn’t know what to do with it so I asked the waitperson. She asked me if she could go ahead. Go ahead and what, I wondered, but I was hungry so I said yes. She dumped all of the bing si into the broth. It worked pretty well, although if I were to have it again. And. I. Would. If I were to have it again, I would dump about half of it in the soup to start and the rest about halfway through the bowl. It was still stellar the way I had it, a new texture for me, and I loved it. A review on Miss Li’s apparent other location, in the Golden Shopping Mall, says Luoyang folks are super-serious about their soup. I believe it. Solid high 5 stars. Seriously a destination dish. And this is a much nicer space than the Golden Shopping Mall. The tomato/egg dish was pretty darn good, four stars, simple good flavor, maybe a bit sweet like the other review says. But not crazy sweet. Between the two, way too much food, but it was good to be able to try them. I finished off the soup and took the leftover tomato/egg to go. Friendly service, some language barrier, cheery space, nice mural on the wall.

Panka Peruvian Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 2708 Ingersoll Ave suite 200, Des Moines

I honestly hesitated to write a review for this place. The service was very nice and the place is trying hard. But the food is just that bad. My coworker and I decided to come here for dinner one night and was excited to try some Peruvian food. The waiter came over and greeted us, showed us to a table. He was very enthusiastic and went on to tell us how many great reviews they have on yelp. Which honestly turned me off a little. It was a little much at that point. Coworker got a pisco sour while I got a pineapple one. It was good, but mainly just tasted like juice. I normally get red after a quarter of a drink, and I didn’t get red at all. He brought out some plantain chips for us to munch on. Immediately we could tell they were stale. They didn’t crunch and were very soft. Then he went on about how great the dipping sauce was. Which kind of just tasted like some sort of chili spiced aioli. It wasn’t great. The food took a long time to get to us, and we were starving at that point. Stale chips or not, we resorted to eating then till our food finally came. Coworker got some sort of pork and ginger Peruvian style fried rice while I got the stew. The fried rice…. was just that. As my coworker said “this is something you can get at a take out restaurant at an airport for 8 bucks”. The Aji de Gallina was the literally the worst. It said it was a creole like stew. It was basically just a heavy cream coating chicken and potatoes with rice. I tried to stomach it, but it was the blandest thing I ever had. No flavor or not whatsoever. It felt like I was eating chicken with heavy cream. The chilies they said were also in it? I didn’t see a single one. There was absolutely no spice, and they didn’t have any salt or pepper out on the tables…. the waiter came over a couple times to ask us how everything was and told me how my dish was the most authentic dish they had on the menu, and how everybody loved it. That made me not say anything as well damn, who am I to insult an authentic dish? Maybe I just didn’t know how it was suppose to taste like. I then let me coworker try it who told me that it was terrible, and I should stop eating just heavy cream and chicken. I finally flagged over the waiter and told him how bad the dish was. And how much I actually hated it. He brought it back and offered to get me something else. Which of course I turned down, because… well nothing else really seemed that good. The food here is also pretty pricey for the area. I would never come back here. My coworker and I actually joke about it back at the office. The service is SUPER nice and friendly, maybe comes on a little too strong. Also never got any feedback about the dish from the cooks that night… so eh.

Mug Shotz Sports Bar & Grill – Menu with Prices – 2808 Ogden Rd SE, Calgary

I’ve been there a few times, typically slow with wings but good when you get them. Large wings, lots of flavours and always hot. Last visit was extremely slow, I had almost 2 hours to spend before I had somewhere to be and thought wings and a drink with a friend before would be great. It wasn’t busy at all so I figured we’d be fine. Well after 15 minutes of waiting for a waiter/waitress I went up to the bar to get our drinks ordered. After that our waiter came and took my food order (wings). 40 minutes from walking in we got or first round of wings and we’re all ready watching the clock so ordered a 2nd drink and another round of wings. It took so long when they came that we asked for them to go and finished our drinks. 2 hours for a beer and wings and still had to walk up to the till to get the bill. Wings are worth it but terrible parking and service beyond slow means I probably would not go back.

El Vaquero Mexican Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 10020 Memorial Pkwy SW, Huntsville

Maybe they were just off their game? but here’s my experience. I went for a late lunch on a Tuesday. There was very few people there. My waiter had the attitude like he would have rather been at the dentist having a root canal. He did not provide any information without asking. Food was served promptly though- hot and decent taste. However, the salsa was unedible. Now, I love margaritas but, their house margarita must be made with cheap liquor since my face flush immediately. Also, the waiter did not check on me again and I had to go to the counter to receive my bill. He may have had 1 other customer so there was no excuse. I doubt I will be back. Oh, almost forgot about the fly I had to keep swatting away too…

Den Den Korean Fried Chicken – Menu with Prices – 182 Angell St, Providence

I came here on a Saturday with three other people around noon and there was no wait. My sister has been wanting to try this place for some time and it does not disappoint! Once we sat down, we were told we could sit anywhere we want, a waiter came over to drop off some menus. My sister and I decided to get green tea, which is unsweetened, but that’s how I like it! The others in our group got ginger ale which came in a can but was brought out with a glass filled with ice. I also really enjoyed the decor of the place, simple yet with modern features. Also the service was perfect, everything came out timely and the waiter made sure to check in enough that we never had to flag them down for anything. For food we decided to get/split veggie spicy dumplings, the potato twister, Korean sweet potato fries and then a medium sized fried chicken (bone in, half spicy half not). All this food was split between four people and was the perfect amount of food. I really enjoyed the spicy wings as well as the korean sweet potato fries. I would deff get those two items again if I went back. The waiter even brought over small buckets for the bones and also wet wipes for our hands. I think the spicy wings had just enough heat without being overly spicy. All the food was amazing though and if you haven’t been yet I suggest you stop by!

Angelâ??s Taqueria – Menu with Prices – 2594 12th St, Sarasota

My wife and I agree – best Mexican restaurant in town. The room was nearly full with who I presume to be the owners manning the rush, one in the kitchen and the other on the floor. While the wait for our food may have been longer than “usual,” it was well worth it to have a freshly cooked meal with fresh ingredients. Fresh tortillas were a sweet surprise! Salsa was delicious – great consistency, nice little kick. “Do you have hot sauce?” I asked our waiter as he brought us refills. “Ahh, we do,” he exclaimed lifting his finger, “It’s the best!” He brought back a condiment bottle filled with a creamy red sauce. It was the best. Not sure exactly what it was, but it was delicious. After thanking them for the great experience and assuring them we would return, our waiter said “mi casa es su casa.” THATS the kind of place I want to support.

Bluewater Grill – Menu with Prices – 15 E Cabrillo Blvd, Santa Barbara

Worst service I’ve ever received. We’ve been to the Redondo Beach and Newport Beach Blue Water’s, but we will never return to this one. First, they gave alcohol to my son. DID NOT CARD HIM! Isn’t that against the law!?! He ordered an oyster shot. On the menu, it has ‘oyster shot’ $3 and under it with a shot of vodka (in smaller letters) $5. He takes it and starts gagging and turning red. After checking his glass and my other sons oyster shot, it had vodka. I go to the counter to bring this issue up with the manager and he basically hovers over me and says “that’s the way they’re made!.” Do they take the vodka out after a minor or someone else who doesn’t want alcohol and asks. I point to the menu and it clearly say oyster shot, by itself. He then looks at me and says, “what are you asking for sir!” Really. That is the response to a complaint? Did not apologize first. No personality, no compassion. What do you want me to do! Secondly, the waiter rollers his eyes when my older son decides on a different dish because they don’t make it the same way they do at the Redondo Beach restaurant. Rolls his eyes. Are we back in grade school. Then he mixes up orders, get 2 orders wrong and forgets my older sons order. My older son And my wife order Arnold Palmers and he comes back and tells my younger son, who didn’t order it, that they were out of lemonade. Never told us they ran out of lemonade. Finally my older son orders a coke and the waiter never brought it. The only bright spot of this whole ordeal was the helper Justin. He actually came to assist and make up for the waiters lack. I also noticed the manager greeting and saying bye to customers as they were leaving. When we were getting ready to leave, he walked away. Never apologized. How sad. And they actually added gratuity on the check. I alway tip very good…this time I did it for one of my worst experiences in a restaurant.

YaYa’s Euro Bistro – Menu with Prices – 8115 E 21st St N, Wichita

Family I was visiting suggested this place for dinner. I opted for the special which was described as mako shark with sweet potato and something else I don’t remember. There was nothing on the plate that I recognized, by either appearance or taste, as sweet potato. The food looked great on the plate but was very spicy. When the waiter described the dish, he never said it was spicy. Had he said it, I would not have ordered it. It could be that he didn’t know it was spicy but that is something he should have known. I asked for water, no ice and with lemon and got the water but no lemon. Lemon wedges were put on the table but by one of my dinner companions and not me. I thought they were for her dinner because she ordered a seafood dish and had specifically said she did not want lemon for her water but did want ice. I think when someone orders lemon with their water, the lemon should be placed in close proximity to the water t is supposed go with. Waiter offered her a refill on her water but not mine. I had to ask for more water. When asked by someone who took my plate away, how my dinner was I told him that it was too spicy and that the waiter had not mentioned the spiciness when describing the dinner. The person, who I assume was in a management position based on the different colored shirt he was wearing, offered no adjustment to the bill. An adjustment may have been made to the bill but since I wasn’t paying it, I don’t know. The dining environment was pleasant in that we were in a booth so we were able to converse without difficulty. Overall, I was very disappointed with the experience which may, in some part, have more to do with how they train their wait staff.
