I live in Vancouver, Canada and even with the bad exchange rate I still cross the border at least once a month, and when I do if I’m often looking for Mexican food. Vancouver has such good Asian food but i have to admit that there are so many more Mexican and Latin American food options south of the border so why not go with what’s better than in my home town. I have a few favourite places to eat but thanks to the reviews on Yelp I can find new places to try. This is how i found El Rey. At 6:15 on a Saturday we were the second or third group in the restaurant so it looked kind of empty but we were not deterred because of the good reviews. We ended up trying the grilled chicken salad which was on special and the house specialty shown in the pictures (the “Perfect Combination Molcajete”). These two dishes were ample to feed the two if us and the Mocajete came with the sides on a plate (see pictures) and choice of corn or flour tortillas. Sadly we had no room for dessert.

Taqueria La Loma Menu with Prices 459 Darrow Rd, Akron

I have long held the position that Taqueria La Loma is one of the best restaurants in Northeast Ohio. For years they have commanded five star reviews from hundreds and hundreds of people. Read my earlier review for a little background on the restaurant and for recommendations on my favorite things here. But they keep getting even better. The beauty of La Loma is in there dedication to authenticity and making everything from scratch in house every day. They are always consistent and the food is always fantastic. They have employees that care about what they do and have been around since the beginning. Recently they transformed half of their attached store into a panadería, or, Mexican bakery. And the dedication for authentic flavors and not taking shortcuts is clearly seen in all of the delicious traditional Mexican pastries and breads that they continuously bake throughout the day. If you are unfamiliar with traditional Mexican pastries I recommend that you try their take on Chamuco, Gallina, Coyota, and various Pan Fino such as Leo and Cuerno. Some of these are shown in the attached pictures. If you like authentic Mexican food or just appreciate the best-in-class of any particular cuisine then you really need to take a trip to Taqueria La Loma and experience a little bit of Mexico City thousands of miles north in Akron, Ohio.

Carmen’s taqueria – Menu with Prices – 206 W Northfield Blvd, Murfreesboro

We were headed back to Atlanta from the last night of a concert tour. The group of 20 wanted Mexican food. Found this little out of the way place and headed there based on the great reviews. When we called the young woman answering the phone was very friendly and helpful. Upon arriving, a few folks were weary as there were no cars in the lot – of course it was 3pm on Sunday and there was a Tennessee Titans home game. Since I trust Yelpers – I convinced the group to take a chance. Boy are we glad that we did. This little place had some of the best homemade, authentic Mexican food. We ordered a little of everything on the menu. The refried black beans and rice, the homemade chips and salsa were perfectly prepared. The portions are huge, the fajitas looked great and many of the group ordered them – and had big smiles on their faces. I had a chicken burrito filled chock full with grilled chicken, rice and beans. Also got a homemade beef tamale – nothing frozen. As we ate the place got more and more customers. The waitstaff was upbeat and pulled food out as quickly as they could. They have TVs so we watched a lot of games during the meal. Would highly recommend this place. Oh and there is actually a Carmen!

Los Potrillos Mexican Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 10722 NW Lakeshore Ave, Vancouver

I held off on writing this for almost a week – thinking about exactly how it went down because I didn’t want to write something in the heat of the moment. We ended up here after driving by & even visiting some places in the same strip mall the past several months. It was extremely spacious and well decorated. It was far from busy (around noon on a Sunday) but we sat in the bar area since our girls ditched us after church. Our waiter brought over menus & then chips & Salad with a plate of “white cabbage”….I was like what is this & he salad it was their version of pico de gao….I love love love pico & after trying several bites (since it’s hard to put food to waste) I didn’t care for it at all. The drink menu is not expansive & I wanted a small but the waiter talked me into getting a size up for just a few more cents. I ended up with a blended peach & strawberry margarita which to be honest was mediocre. My husband ordered the French Margarita & after trying his, it was probably the worst margarita flavor combination I have ever had in my life. We ordered staple items that are hard to mess up – taco salad for me & beef nachos for him. The menu is expansive however the pricing is high – compared to other local Mexican restaurants in the area. The taco salad that was delivered had wonderful presentation but that was it. The lettuce ratio was way higher than it should have been, the taco shell was very bland, there was no diced onions, & the meat (my favorite part of a taco salad) was not proportionate at all but the flavor of the beef was the worse – it was “sweet” and it was way sweet…I’ve never had “sweet” taco meat beef & I never ever want to again. I didn’t need to have my husband try it because it was the same meat in his nachos. We did what we could to eat a majority of the food but ended up having the waiter take it away (which he never asked why) – which was a little discerning. Our bill arrived & it was almost $50. 2 drinks, taco salad & beef nachos….I felt like I had been taken advantage of & not in a good way. I’ve read the reviews prior but wanted to try local & this place (which is a chain) has a very very very long way to go if it wants to complete with the caliber of Mexican restaurants in Vancouver…But give it a try if you want…

La Morenita Mexican Cafe – Menu with Prices – 1418 Darr St, Irving

This is a hidden gem of a taqueria in the Las Colinas/Irving/Dallas corner of town. Just off of Loop 12 and Grauwyler behind a gas station this is the sort of place that can be missed by most of the residents but should be high on any ones list for great “authentic” Mexican food. The staff greets you with a smile and some chips and house made salsa that is above par and definitely NOT made in New York City. I went there with 3 other friends and we were all surprised at the quantity of great food that we were served for lunch. The beef and chicken fajitas were both tender and seasoned well. The mounds of meat were accompanied by rice, beans and a small salad. They were also garnished with a grilled jalapeno. The street taco plate was also a generous portion with the beans and salad. I had the chicken quesadilla with sides of rice, beans, and salad. My group of 4 were all big guys that had been working hard all morning but we were all satisfied and if we had not had to go back to work we would have welcomed a siesta.

Dany’s Bubba Keywest – Menu with Prices – 9021 Airline Dr, Metairie

Dani took my son’s senior pictures when she was back in Portland, Oregon, to shoot a wedding I believe. I found her, quite by chance, in a Craigslist ad – talk about luck. I wanted my son to have nice senior pictures, but he’s not the kind of guy who wants a lot of fuss with changing clothes three times or posing in his lacrosse gear or anything like that. Dani took pictures of him for a half hour wearing his polo shirt and khakis – just his kind of thing. And the photos came out great. That’s what I loved about Dani’s work when I looked on her website. The photos were terrific, but the kids looked like themselves; their personalities came through. A lot of times, senior pictures get so glammed up, you can’t even tell who the kid is! My son’s pictures look like him, she really captured his personality.

Teriyaki Time Menu with Prices 314 Detroit St, Ann Arbor

This was a fun little hidden gem for take out or eating outside downtown. There wasn’t a very long line and we were able to order quickly. We had both kids with us (3&1) and ate outside. I’m not sure if they had kid chairs or not, I’m guessing not. There was enough food to fill all four of us up, just by ordering the lunch special- teriyaki chicken. We ended up spending under $18 for four people (2 specials), which is great for Ann Arbor. The chicken was delicious. It was served with white rice, salad, some kind of sour dressing, and a soft drink. I wish there was another rice option, I would have much preferred brown rice. I didn’t like the dressing and unfortunately it was in an open cup with no lid, so carrying it out of the restaurant to the picnic tables outside it spilled all over and was kind of gross. The salad was just a basic iceberg & carrot mix, probably bagged, but was fine plain. Like I said, ample food and seemingly as much soft drink as you want- though we just enjoyed our waters that we brought. The indoor seating looked a little jammed and tight, and the meal delivery system is a little awkward- the cook just yelled something indistinguishable from the ordering window while we waited outside (there was no room inside, with a large group ordering after us). Overall, it’s a fun and yummy take out joint, but don’t expect to be waited on or “checked” on like a formal restaurant.

Sunny’s | Steak – Seafood – Asian – Menu with Prices – 875 Lombardi Ave, Green Bay

Sad. We had a 5:00 reservation, showed up right on time and our table wasn’t ready. The restaurant was maybe probably less than 25% full so no excuse of being too busy. After several minutes of setting up the table, we were told it was ready but to wait a minute. That minute turned into many and none of the wait staff returned so we just sat down. After another 10 minutes or more still no one came to our table so I went to the bar to ask if someone would be coming. Shortly thereafter someone came and served the table next to us (which had sat down a few minutes after us) and finally several minutes after that the same waitress came and took our drink order. After she left, shortly thereafter another waitress came to take our order as well. She took the entire order this time. So finally, after being seated for nearly 30 minutes our order was finally in. When our drinks finally came out, two us had beers that were only about 2/3 full, the rest was foam. But the server , who was apparently just helping from the kitchen, said she would come back later with more. Which she did, so that was nice. But then it took probably 45 minutes or more before our food actually came out. And still the restaurant was less than 25% full. We had some mixed reviews from our table on the food. I thought the pork steak was really good. We had one order of the children’s chicken fingers which looked like smashed pancakes and had very little flavor. Obviously these looked nothing like the chicken fingers in the menu picture. Also, the menu has pictures of two different kinds of fries. The picture in the kids menu section were of straight cut fries and the pictures in the main menu section were crinkle cut. The kids got crinkle cut, not the straight as shown. A little misleading. Overall, this was a pretty sad experience. We went on Mother’s Day with three mothers. One of we were also celebrating her retirement. So a very disappointing experience.

Calavera Tacos – Menu with Prices – 5932, 501 S Palafox St, Pensacola

I’ve visited this group of food trucks two years ago when I came to a ballgame, but didn’t try this food truck. I saw the great reviews when I was looking for Mexican/Tex Mex food per my niece’s request. The menu and the pictures looked promising and the ingredients looked fresh. This place was great! I mean superb! I had the paco taco which consisted of mahi mahi fried with Mexican spices topped with serrano cabbage, pickled red onion, cilantro. Topped with southwest cilantro white sauce on a corn tortilla. Wow! It was fantastic. The fish was cooked just right and just enough spice. I ordered it as a combo to get a side of yellow Spanish rice and these fabulous black beans. My husband order the gigante burrito with black beans, rice, pork that they marinate for 13 hours, cheese blend, pico. (He’s not a guac or sour cream fan) but that was legit!! My nephew and bro in law split an order of nachos because it was huge!! Covered in chicken, black beans, cheese, jalapeños… it came with a side of habanero sauce which was hot!!! It was wonderful though!! The prices were way reasonable and the ladies in the truck were super friendly!

Bluff Street Bar & Billiards – Menu with Prices – 2690 28th St Ste E, Boulder

This place is improved since new owners took over a while back. It’s a good place to play pool, and the draft beer selection is good (suits me, at least!). However, I’ve been a little disappointed in the food options because I don’t eat meat. Previously, the menu offered a grilled cheese sandwich as well as a house salad. At least there were a couple options for a meal without meat. With the new menu, the only options for a vegetarian dinner are grilled romaine salad (it’s unique, but also rich, so you might not want to order it that often), or a side of fries or pickles (haha). I suppose I could order the smoky mac n cheese without the bacon or the chopped grilled chicken salad without the chicken. But then I’m paying for meat that I don’t eat. It seems like the menu has been made more gourmet with the transition to new ownership over the last year, which is a good thing. But I politely request that the owners and chef consider bringing back the regular house salad without meat and the grilled cheese sandwich, and perhaps adding a veggie version of the tacos, and a non-meat healthy appetizer like a hummus plate. Those are just some ideas. Believe me, I’m not the only person who wants non-meat options!

El Viejon Seafood & Bar – Menu with Prices – 1560 S 1st St, Garland

Not a good restaurant donâ??t understand why they have good reviews. Prices are ridiculous I donâ??t mind paying for good food & I know seafood especially is expensive but the food sucks it doesnâ??t justify the high prices AT ALL. Plus the menu pictures are false advertisement donâ??t think youâ??re plate is going to look like whatâ??s on the menu pic. What I ordered was completely different when I told the waitress she brought over the menu looked at the pic & looked at my plate you could tell she saw a difference but said oh thatâ??s what itâ??s supposed to look like. Save your money & go to a real Mexican seafood restaurant this one is NO good!

Leo’s Lodge – Menu with Prices – 2525 E Jolly Rd, Lansing

The group of people I went to training with decided to come here as a group. We came in during a busy lunch rush, but got seated immediately. Unfortunately, we all ordered items that take a but longer. I ordered a burger. We realized we did not have enough time. When the waitress came, we asked if she was able to bring boxes and the check, in case we needed to rush out to drive back. The waitress was super kind and accommodating to our needs. She brought boxes and the checks. She came back quickly as well the collect the bills to that we could tip and get our card back. She apologized for the time it took, but it was not her fault. It was our fault for thinking we had time to sit and dine. I really loved the atmosphere in this restaurant. It was quite nice inside, and the waitress was kind throughout. Sadly, I was in a rush and could not take any pictures. I am hoping to visit this place again some day and add pictures.

Mikado sushi & grill – Menu with Prices – 920 American Rd, Lansing

We tried Mikado sushi before going to see Hamilton and thought it was about average. I would have rated 3.5, and since Yelp requires whole numbers, I am in the habit of rounding down. When we arrived, we noticed the building looked like it was previously a fast food restaurant as it had one way in, one way out, and a drive through window. When we got inside, it looked like they might have kept the original seating, but added some decor to spruce it up and remodeled the counter where you would normally order into a sushi bar area. We felt the menu was pretty traditional, and while some of the sushi roll names might have been unique, the contents were similar to what we have seen in other sushi restaurants. I was looking for something unique and different, so I ordered the green monster roll as this was only the second time I’ve seen a roll like that, and thought it was good but it didn’t blow me away. All of the other rolls we ordered were LOADED with sauce. I think a nice sauce drizzle is good on specialty rolls, but they added a little too much for my liking here. I did like that they use paper straws here, and thought the salad was pretty good despite the fact that soup and/or salad do not come with your sushi rolls. (Paying for soup/salad at a sushi restaurant is a pet peeve of mine. When some places offer one or both with a single sushi roll, and you buy six pricey specialty rolls, the least they can do is give you a complimentary soup or salad with it.) We thought the prices were comparable to other sushi restaurants in town, and we didn’t NOT like it, but we still have other favorite spots in the Greater Lansing area.
