Mediocre poke, terrible service. We came in today (2/17/19) to grab some cups of poke for lunch, probably around 12:30-12:45pm. It was empty, and when we opened the door- no noise from the back, nobody in the front, but the sign said “open”. We walk in quietly and look at the cases, when an older, taller man came out to the counter (he was wearing a blue jacket, balding on top, mustached, and wore glasses) and seemed to be rather cross about something. We walk around looking at all the cases, seeing if there would be any exceptional finds. There wasn’t. No big deal. We go to the main counter and say hello, and we get a curt “hello”. We took our time looking at the cases, speaking among ourselves, while he stood there, looking annoyed or frustrated. I didn’t like the vibe this guy gave off, and neither did my partner. While he didn’t attack us in any way, his tone clearly felt like we were taking up HIS time. My boyfriend asked at some point, “how has it been today, a slow da-” before being interrupted with, “I have a lot to do today. Not many customers, but a lot to do in the back. Like a lot to do.” We laugh it off uncomfortably. …Okay? (I don’t mind that he was not the cheeriest person in the room, but I feel disrespected as a customer when the only person representing your business is off-handedly rude in what little interaction we had; especially for it being my first time there!) We ask for two 1/2lb cups and proceed to checkout, where I’m just ready to leave with my lunch. I think to myself, “This guy is rude, but it’s probably just a bad day, I’ll let him have it.” He fumbles with my debit card, having to do the process twice “because the reader likes to not do its job sometimes”, before telling me my total at a level I couldn’t hear. Like any other customer, I reciprocate with, “Huh? Twenty?”, to clarify what he had said, and he goes loudly, “NINETEEN. FOURTY. SIX.” like I’m an insolent child or something! Really? We finish paying and we walk out. Unfortunately, we should have left when we had, but turning the corner towards the alley I remember I had another question to ask him. My boyfriend goes inside to ask, where he’s BLATANTLY ignored. He yells to the back, “Hello???”, to no answer. He loudly called out four or five times! He could see the same guy standing in the back with his back turned towards us, and who refused to come up. We know he heard us, because his head twitched in our direction while being called out!! The at this point, it’s clear to me our business is not welcome. What had we done, two quiet twenty-y/o’s, to piss this guy off? I can’t fathom why. We’re not coming back to this store. The fish dishes we had were decent, but unspectacular. Nothing grand that would keep us coming back, but decent enough to try at least once. I had no major grievances, except the chunks were slightly on the mushier side. As much as I had hoped to support this business before I came, after today, I’m advising any of my friends or family to steer clear of this location. Whomever that man was, whether owner or worker, he is certainly NOT presenting your business in a way that will attract (and keep) new customers.

Aloha Sushi – Menu with Prices – 745 Fort Street Mall, Honolulu

I got lunch here with a friend who said she liked their poke bowls. I ordered a bi bim bap with shoyu poke because I wanted the choice of 5 veggies it comes with. The veggies were okay. They have a decent variety to choose from including namul, kim Chee, seaweed salad, Mac salad, Choi sum, cabbage, cucumber kim Chee, lotus root, long rice noodles, and several others. I would give the poke 2 stars because it was definitely frozen with slightly mushy texture, and seemed a little waterlogged. It had a slight ahi flavor. To call it “poke” is a stretch of imagination, though, because it had barely any shoyu, about 5 fine threads of onion, and maybe 5 pieces of chopped green onion. I ate most of the veggies, a few bites of poke, then just gave up because it just wasn’t worth the calories. There’s a lot of better poke bowl places downtown for a few bucks more.

Pisces Poke & Ramen – Menu with Prices – 5587 Huntington Dr N, Los Angeles

My boyfriend was really craving some poke and he has stumbled upon this place on yelp. Upon walking in, we were immediately greeted by two of their workers. The menu is a bit confusing to me to read but you basically pick your flavor, the type of fish you would like (unless, it’s already a set flavor with a pre-picked fish) and either white/brown rice or salad. Both of the girls were EXTREMELY HELPFUL and so patient with me and my boyfriend. They really wanted us to order something that we liked and they even offered up some samples of their flavors. My boyfriend more of an adventurous eater and didn’t want to sample their poke flavor but I however was more than happy to sample their Hawaiian Poke and their Pesto Seared Salmon and Shrimp. They even made their samples ON THE SPOT, the Hawaiian poke was great, I sampled their albacore with that flavor and it was just the right amount of citrus soy sauce. This is usually the flavor I choose to play it safe and I’m sort of happy that I didn’t choose this flavor because…… the champion taste bud winner for me was the PESTO! it was so good, it was herby, lightly sweet, light tangy and so flavorful that I couldn’t resist ordering. I would’ve never thought Pesto & poke would’ve made a great pair but it does and it’s soooo delicious. The spicy Korean was great too. Not overwhelmingly sweet, just the right amount of spice and smokiness. The fish is propped onto a bed of salad which is nice as well. We are definitely coming back, the food and the service was amazing.

Poke Bowl Plus – Menu with Prices – 615 State St, Madison

I’m so down for the explosion of poke places in Madison, Wisconsin. I was in Hawaii last summer and literally still dream about the abundance of fresh, buttery, flavorful poke that you could find there pretty much any place you went. I’ve not yet made it out to other poke places in Madison but if they’re anything like Poke Plus, I’d say Madison is in pretty good poke hands. This location replaces the old Disco Fries restaurant, which I never entered but walked by every day and was not surprised to see go under because I hardly ever saw anyone in there. I think the location works much better as a poke place – it’s a quick light lunch you can grab to go and the service is quick and efficient. The fish is fresh and the sauces are yummy – probably the only qualm is portions are a bit small for what you pay but it is poke so I’m happy to pay it. I also got their salmon teriyaki too go one day and it was very satisfying – a surprising amount of fish and very flavorful. Definitely will add Poke Plus into my rotation of “i’m on campus and want to have lunch but don’t want to eat at the Union” places.

Pendleton Carryout Co. Menu with Prices 807 Pendleton St, Alexandria

really sad to be posting this because I loved all of their food offerings when they first opened. However, over the last few months the staff has changed, the hours have changed, and so has the food quality. My boyfriend and I loved coming in in the mornings for the breakfast sandwiches. Last week, the woman at the counter yelled at my boyfriend for walking into the open door at 10:55 am because they weren’t open for another five minutes, and then curtly told him they don’t have breakfast sandwiches in, speaking as if it was his fault that he had asked. today the people at the counter had their headphones in and didnt even fully take them out to take our order. Over the past month, they didn’t have the ingredients several times, and today they gave us a sandwich that not only didn’t have the fluffy scrambled eggs we were used to, but the egg was chopped up and not fully cooked through, the cheese wasn’t melted and they were overall soggy. As for the hours, they now dont open until 11, so for breakfast we’ve been hitting up McDonalds again, because in my book, 11am is a little for a breakfast sandwich and I dont want to be walking around midday to pick up lunch in 90 degree heat. Not going back here until they get their act together and turn back into the restaurant they were when they first opened.

Poki Cat – Poke and Salad – Menu with Prices – 2630 Tuscany St #102, Corona

Please don’t come here if you’re looking for a good poki spot. I came here with high expectations because this place was recommended to me but I didn’t know how STINGY they could be!! I was shocked at the smallest possible portion scoops and I paid for avocado on both mine and my boyfriends bowl and half way through eating we realize he never actually put it on the bowl but they charged us for it.. we didn’t even bother asking because it would probably be the tiniest scoop, same with their side sauces and tiny cups for soda. The guy behind the counter seems like he hates his life and his job and has no enthusiasm whatsoever. I wouldn’t hire him to work for me. The lady behind the counter also seemed embarrassed when my boyfriend asked for sriracha sauce and all their bottles were empty. It seems like this place has potential but has the wrong staff / vibe. I would not come here again. Oh and it was $30 for both bowls. There’s so many good poki spots try pokilicious on Riverwalk or spin poke if you’re ever in Anaheim! They put so much love into their bowls and fill it up.

Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt – Menu with Prices – 24244 Lyons Ave, Santa Clarita

POSTED BUSINESS HOURS MEAN NOTHING My family has been coming to this location since they opened in 2011. We go Year Round and it’s always the same; Walk in, fill our cups, no tasting, no toppings, get it to go and we’re out. The lady at the counter has been there for years and is normally always pleasant. So what went wrong? For the second time in 6 months we have been snubbed. The hours are clearly posted open until 9:30pm. We got there at 9:21 after another day of triple digit temperatures in Santa Clarita. The doors were still open and I could see she was just starting to remove spoons from the toppings. Not a problem, we never get any. (Remember, alway in and out for us) So I start to walk in and am told by another man who was not behind the counter and stops me at the door “We are closed.” The door wasn’t even locked! Really??? I look at my watch and at the POSTED HOURS and say “It’s not closing time yet” they just smile with a stupid look “Yeah, we are closed.” Im a reasonable person. That’s why when it happened the first time I let it go. I get it if you had already started dismantling the machines for the night, but this was not the case. Would it have been so difficult to offer the slightest of customer courtesy? It’s not like I pulled up with a Boy Scout Troop. I was alone! I could have been in and out before you finished packing up the gummy bears. Which by the way is a disgusting topping for frozen yogurt anyway. Clearly my continued business for the last few YEARS is not valued. So I’ll be happy to spend my money down the street at Baskin Robbins. Which we promptly went to. Oh and by the way, we not only drove down the street, got our ice cream to go; we were home enjoying it at 9:29. Good luck with your business model for Customer Service. Remember Penguins Frozen Yogurt? Where are they now? My point exactly. You might be in luck; 31 flavors might be hiring.

Green Works – Menu with Prices – 176-37 Union Tpke, Flushing

So excited to have a Poke spot close by! Usually I’d be taking my chances eating left overs from my lunch at work; but no more 4 hour old poke for me!…yeah not one of my better moments. After my third encounter at Green Works, I think I can give a fair assessment of their Poke offerings. Customer service wise, everyone I’ve come into contact with has been welcoming and pleasant! My first order was a poke burrito which was good, however the fillings could’ve been spread out more. My bf ordered a bowl and his was way more filling. My second order was a bowl, a younger gentleman made it and it was amazing! Perfect portions, well cuts! I was happy. My third order was another bowl, this one not too happy with. Not a lot of fish in this one, definitely not thw same amount as the last bowls. I ordered carrots which I don’t usually do, and let’s just say they must’ve cut up two whole carrots. They must’ve made up for the lack of fish with excess carrots (see pics). I feel as if they may not be using a standard scope for the protein, so regardless of poke type; you’re receiving the same amount of fish. Overall consistency is key when opening a new place. Especially one that has switched hands as frequently as the Green Works location. I will miss Coffee Poke and their waffles but glad actual poke has landed! Three stars as there’s definitely room for improvement. But off to a decent start. Best of luck!

Texas Coffee Traders Menu with Prices 1400 E 4th St, Austin

I didn’t know that this was a must-visit spot until I randomly came across it! My boyfriend is a big coffee drinker and wanted to grab some coffee on our walk home from lunch. He found this on yelp and we headed over. It’s in a very quiet area a few blocks over from the main street. The inside is no-frills. They sell coffee beans and coffee equipment and there’s an area where the baristas are. My boyfriend ordered the vanilla iced coffee and it came out really quick. He loved the coffee! We would’ve purchased coffee beans if we had space in our carry-ons. They gave me a free latte since they were practicing latte art with a few cups. I thought this was really sweet of them! I added a little bit of vanilla syrup and it was amazing! I’m not a coffee drinker, but I know when I’m drinking a good cup. The cherry on top was the employees. They were all so sweet and funny. They all seemed like they enjoyed each other’s presence and made us feel really comfortable! Overall, I loved coming here and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a quaint place to grab a quick cup of coffee. FYI, they are not open on Sundays. S/o to the eco friendly plastic ?

Bubble Leaf – Menu with Prices – 526 W Benjamin Holt Dr Suite A, Stockton

I returned recently because I really enjoyed their specialty drinks the last time. Came with my boyfriend this time because he wanted to give it a try too. I have more complaints than compliments this time. I wanted to try something classic this time since I was craving a regular milk tea. I made a mistake and I should have ordered another specialty that I haven’t tried yet. Their classic milk teas and tapioca pearls aren’t very good and are lacking in comparison to other milk tea shops. Maybe in the future I’ll consider ordering them again when I think there has been improvement. My boyfriend agrees with me. We also wanted to try their popcorn chicken but they were out at around 5 PM. Lastly, for the time being, I think I’ll stick to ordering with the regular cups instead of the split cups. I’m not content with split cups still having lids that don’t close right and causing the two drinks to mix together. My boyfriend’s thai tea mixed with his peach black tea in his split cup. This place is still new so I don’t want to make judgements too quickly. If I return anytime soon, I’m going to stick to their specialties. Hoping they don’t run out of popcorn chicken next time I’m here. The fries are good. I’d recommend trying their other snacks because they have unique ones. The employees here are very friendly and attentive. The wait isn’t long and this place is closest to my house compared to other milk tea shops so I’ll definitely be coming back.

Tasu Express Asian Grill and Poke – Menu with Prices – 3307 Watkins Rd, Durham

Finally a poke place in this part of Durham Tasu express is a new restaurant from the Shiki sushi owners that offers a wide variety of food from poke bowls to hibachi express style dishes. I love poke, but most of the poke places in Durham are located in or near downtown and not close to my daily travel route. One day while driving home and deciding what to do for dinner I wandered in here seeing it was now open and was extremely happy to see they served poke bowls since I could eat poke most days out of the week. Tasu is a walk in style restaurant where you order at the counter and either pick up your food right there or it’s brought to your table. I ordered the large poke bowl option. There’s the traditional range of poke proteins from salmon, spicy tuna, crab, shrimp, scallops and other proteins. After choosing your bowl size and proteins you pick your toppings and sauces. If you love poke they have the traditional style poke spread for toppings and sauces. They have eel sauce, which I love and was happy to see that they served it here. The large poke bowl is a good sized portion and their prices fit alongside the other poke places in the area. They have an interesting selection of fountain drinks and classic ones too. The service was very friendly and quick and the place was spotless. It’s wonderful to see the Shiniki sushi owners branching out into other places in Durham. I remember when Shiki was a small little sushi place and now it’s massive and takes up half of the Homestead Plaza since they expanded. They know how to run a sushi place. The only thing that might disappoint some people here is that it’s only poke/sushi bowls served here and not any actual sushi rolls, which some might come to expect. I’m eager to try this place again and try other poke combinations or even their hibachi offerings.

Flaming Grill & Supreme Buffet – Menu with Prices – 1501 Forest Ave, Staten Island

If the prices were any higher, it would be a one- two stars. But for the price, its definitely worth it. We got there at 3:20 (10 minutes before lunch ends) the prices are about $10 for lunch and $14 for dinner. Waitresses convinced us to pay for the dinner price cause for dinner time, they bring out about 10 new dishes that are for dinner time only. So we agreed to pay for the dinner price. At 3:30, they bring out the dinner exclusive dishes like oysters, crabs, shrimps etc and they put a sign that says ” for dinner customers only” in front of the pot but tbh I’m pretty sure a lot of people ignore the sign and just get it- nobody’s looking. Didnt get a chance to try the hibachi cause no one was at the station. I think they were on lunch break. And the floors feel gross- like very oily, sticky, slippery. Also the cups the ice water came in was a little dirty on the outside…. But- they do have a pretty decent variety of food for just $14! The quality is not amazing, its not even good- its average at best. But for the price I would say that’s pretty good

It’s Raw Poke Shop – Menu with Prices – 3112, 4991 Newport Ave A, San Diego

A different (and superior) take on poke’. If you’re poke experience is the local poke shop set up like Subway or Chipotle, that is: “base, protein, and topping,” this is different and more authentic. You’re HERE for the poke; that is raw fish, not the filler. You’re presented with a refrigerated case with the selection of prepped fish, tuna, salmon, ahi. Unlike most poke shops, the fish here is prepped in a light coating / marinade that imparts a great flovor, spicy or not, that’s the chef’s signature. No need to select a dozen toppings /fillers. Serving options include a couple scoops of rice or maybe their take on macaroni salad, all in a foam lunch box. They offered what can best be described as a spam roll, as a side. Great with a drizzle of soy sauce. Besides the soy sauce, the condiment kiosk included a dry sesame seed sprinkle and Sriracha sauce. This is basic, delicious. Makes the menu at In-N-Out seem complicated. While there is a ledge to belly up to to eat, best you bag it and take the 1 block walk to the beach and find a wall to relax on to savor this great value and succulent culinary experience.
