Probably the best bakery aka panaderia here in Brownsville. I grew up in the area so the bread was a household staple. You may think I am biased but I have converted many friends and acquaintances to this bakery. Even though I live 20 minutes away, I still make the drive across town and specially on those chilly day to pick up a fresh, just out of the oven marranito and a concha. There Dia de Reys rosca is something to write home about. Also one of the few places where you can find locally made Dia de los Muertos bread! One can not only taste the quality of ingredients they use, but also the love and very hard labor every piece embodies. I wish them many more years of success. Truly a Southmost Tradition.

La Flor De Trigo Bakery – Menu with Prices – 1321 W Lincoln Ave, Milwaukee

This is a very small bakery and the prices are very reasonable. It is self-service, pick out your bakery then take them to the counter to pay. The Rosca de Reyes, a Mexican sweet bread was delicious. The Marranitos Puerquitos, pig cookie was sweet and tasty. I also purchased their dried banana and found it flavorful and crispy. The tamales are hot and yummy. It is a fun place to explore and try their delicious goods. The owners are very friendly and helpful.

Doughboys Donut – Menu with Prices – 3330 11th St, Rockford

I have known this way here for ages and finally one day decided to stop. I am so glad I did. The donuts are phenomenal. I love to try local donut places when I travel and have had many donuts both locally and world wide. I was always comparing them to my favorite bakery that closed down many years ago and was most often disappointed. This place has filled that void for me. Other than the donuts I ate at bread ahead in London, these are the best donuts I have had in a long time. I tried a few different types (glazed, blueberry, old fashioned cake with sprinkles, etc) and they were all very delicious and have great consistency. If you are looking for a great donut I can not recommend this place highly enough.

Sneaky Pete’s Menu with Prices 240 Oxmoor Cir #107, Birmingham

When I moved to Birmingham in the mid-90’s Sneaky Pete’s was one of the first places a local took me. He called it a “Birmingham institution” at the time. I’m not sure how true that is and over the years I have gone less and less. Although there is just something about this place. I don’t know if it’s a comfort thing like you know the taste over the years will never change or what. Really you can go for several years without going but when you go back eventually, because you will go back, it just seems right. I personally never stray too far from the standard Hot Dog all the way. Which is mustard, sauerkraut, and the Sneaky Pete’s Sauce, which you can find at most local grocery stores. All in all this is not some amazing hot dog you’ll want to write home to mom about but then again at least they don’t try and screw up a hot dog and put avocado or some crap like that on it. They are all over Birmingham so go try one. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Super Pan Bakery – Menu with Prices – 1729 E 7th St, Long Beach

Mana bakery will always have a special place in my heart… This little bakery is hidden along 7th street, easily missed but not hard to find. Once entering, you will find yourself in an abundance of fresh, warm, Latin American baked goods ranging from the typical Mexican pan dulce (sweet bread), to Guatemalan cookies, and flan. My favorite is their beso (kiss) which you can try for only $1. It is a Mexican pastry consisting of two very large, thick, muffin top-like bread domes on top and bottom, with a thin filling of either jam or icing in the middle. I always buy the Guatemalan breads which are 3 for $1, for people to try at work. They’re very soft and delicious, in comparison to the the subtle thickness of most Mexican pan Dulces. Their conchas (shells) are chocolate or vanilla and they are .50c! They are huge and if you stop by in the morning they will be freshly made, meaning warm! Delicious… They’ve also got cuernos (horns) which they will fill for you with custard for only $1! Most of the bread is either .50c or $1. All of the Guatemalan bread is 3 for .99c. Great prices! Along with these delicious baked goods, there is also coffee available for a buck! They have a fridge with drinks such as milk, soda, Monster energy, and flan! They take orders for Birthday cakes or a cake for any occasion! But available daily are their Magdalena’s, a very delicious small cake (no icing or decoration, just the bread itself) from their country of origin. It is $5.99 and absolutely worth it! **Let me add, on Dia de Los Reyes (a Hispanic religious holiday) my family bought a Rosca from them and it was excellent. The texture of all the baked goods here is nothing like the bread from big chain supermarkets. I have noticed it is very dry everywhere. Here, you will almost instantly taste a difference. Very soft, very generous sized, quality bread for a very low price! Service is delightful! Every time I stop by for some goodies, the owner (a very kind Guatemalan man) greets me warmly and even knows me (and my mother) by name. His friendly customer service is also a major reason as to why I keep coming down here for the occasional morning bread and coffee. Mana bakery brings this part of town quality, authentic Guatemalan and Mexican Pan Dulce, and friendly service. I’m always walking out of here with a smile. Thank you Mana! 5 stars, well earned!

Julian Bakery, Inc. – Menu with Prices – 624 Garrison St, Oceanside

I must say after ordering the Keto Thin bread I regretted it as I started reading the reviews. I trusted Julian Bakery brand but realized I mistaken it with Dudley’s. They use to have a low carb bread but discontinued (years ago). What did catch my attention about all the negative remarks is they responded and most had to do with shipping. I was going to make sure I would be home upon delivery. I ordered the bread on a Sunday and received a confirmation email on Monday and received another email later in day with my shipping info. Scheduled to be shipped on Wednesday and arrival on Thursday. I did select the option to be notified by email when the bread was delivered. I was a bit worried about it being a warm summer day. I was home when the bread was delivered but didn’t know until I checked my email. It’s said it was delivered at 1p and I picked it up from my doorstep at 1:53 pm. It was in the shade and the box was not warm. I checked the product and it appeared to be freshly baked and it does have a pound cake look as someone commented. There was only the three loaves and the invoice in the box and they were not squashed. I checked each loaf for mold but looked as if they were freshly baked. They had a consistent look and feel. I toasted it and made a sandwich. The bread was a tad dry but happy to be eating a sandwich. It tasted fine and held up well. If you compare it to regular bread it is not as moist; but it makes a good sandwich and a great Keto option. it’s taste doesn’t take away from the other sandwich ingredients. I can’t wait to make grilled cheese or try it with almond butter or cream cheese and Everything but the Bagel Seasoning Blend…or French Toast!

Nicosia’s Bakery – Menu with Prices – 781 Burke Ave, The Bronx

this bread bakery brings back plenty of good memories for me . it’s been on burke ave the bronx since the early 1925 and folks keep coming for the fresh italian bread that is second to none. when i was a young lad i would be on burke ave hanging with friends and visiting my granny and aunt who lived right across the street from the bakery and that smell of fresh hot bread hitting the air was powerful . they bake the bread really early in the morning and then deliver the assorted breads and rolls to supermarkets , deli’s , bodegas , etc . the shop itself inside and outside is plain and simple but it’s all about the breads . they also carry cookies and other types of pastries but for me it’s a few loafs of seeded bread and it’s a wrap . i recommend coming in the morning when everything is still hot and fresh . the prices are still reasonable and quality has not dropped after all these years . i grew up in the area and nicosias bread bakery is one of the reasons i make an effort to keep coming back.

Oakwood Baking Co – Menu with Prices – 585 S Waring St, Detroit

Most people who live in the Detroit area have seen the big bakery bags with Oakwood plastered up the side. Some of you may have even got some fresh once or twice. I have purchased these also and they pale in comparison to what that bread is suppose to taste like. The normal Italian bread fresh out of the oven has a perfectly crispy outside and a fluffy chewy inside… the perfect italian bread. The bakery is a big house in a neighborhood near bayside (last area in southwest Detroit before you reach Melvindale). The area is a bit sketchy, but for good bread, there isn’t much I won’t do. As soon as you step out of your car you realize how blessed this small city block is. To walk out of your house every morning only to be greeted by the most wonderful smell of bread must be heaven! Walking into the bakery can be a little confusing. My first time my girlfriend and I nearly gave our selves the full tour before finding any employees. The man who normally helps you is a 50 somethings Italian man with a very very thick accent. There is not much to place though, nothing to browse through, they only make a few types of bread here. Just pick up a few fresh loaves and be on your way. I recommend buy 2 or 3 though because they are dirt cheap ($.50 for day old and 1:50 for fresh) and I have almost eaten a whole loaf on the ride home and I only live 5 minutes away. You have to go early to get the really fresh stuff.

Indiana Mexican Bakery – Menu with Prices – 1419 N Wells St, Fort Wayne

Going into the Mexican bakery after visiting Hyde Brothers’ Books across the street has become something of a tradition for me. The place has a ‘stepping back in time’ vibe to it, and the aromas the hit you as soon as you walk in are wonderful. The selection of fresh baked goods is a bit overwhelming, and includes cookies, cupcakes, bread, rolls, buns, pastries, turnovers, and a number of others items. It’s very much a ‘serve yourself’ bakery, just ask for a set of tongs and a tray and have at it. Prices are surpringly low, I bought a fresh cookie and a roll, each bigger than my outstretched hand, for $1.50. Both were delicious. Be sure to look around the store at the overall inventory, the shop has much more to offer than tasty bake goods.

Victorian Bakery – Menu with Prices – 512 N Park St ste b, Kalamazoo

We are, it seems, not in the fan club for this bakery. We have sampled over the years breads, cakes, pastries, and confections by this bakery, and each and every time we can think of other bakeries that we prefer. We prefer oatmeal bread and croissants and Challah bread from Sarkozy’s, we like the pastries from McKenzie’s, and we like everything that comes out of Zingerman’s bakeries (Ann Arbor). I think the bread that the Garden Griddle (Paw Paw) makes for restaurant use is better. The scones that the Victorian Bakery makes are okay – actually, nobody makes a better than average scone around here (the late chef of now defunct Cafe 237 made the best scones). If you invite us to an afternoon gathering or a baby shower then there’d better be awesome coffee and a Boonzaaijer cake. A cake from Bert’s Bakery is an acceptable substitute. Sarkozy’s also makes for Rosh Hashanah Challah bread with golden raisins. Yumm. So the Victorian Bakery gets a big yawning “okay” from us. We don’t hate it; we just think there are more interesting and satisfying bakeries in SW Michigan. Would I go to a catered event and turn up my nose at a Victorian Bakery chocolate croissant? Nah, probably not. But would I ever seek them out from the bakery myself? Nah, probably not. Maybe only the scones. And who else bothers making with scones in this city? Few. We do think it was swell they moved the business to the North Side, though we always wondered how long they were going to tolerate being in the flood plain on Crosstown Parkway.

Portland French Bakery – Menu with Prices – 6840 N Marine Dr, Portland

I discovered Portland French Bakery when I lived in Portland and was eating at a fancy dancy restaurant downtown. They were serving some phenomenal Potato Rosemary Bread dipped in balsamic vinegar and olive oil. I love bread, almost any way you slice it.. but this bread.. was AMAZING. After inquiring with the server I found out they did not make their own bread, but instead got it from Portland French Bakery. I contacted the bakery and found out although they are wholesalers, they WILL sell to the public at will call for retail orders. So over the years every time I have bag space and I am making a trip up I’ll pick up a few (8) loaves of bread and bring it down to me. They come par-baked and are super moist and delicious. If you have a restaurant in the area and are looking for some pre-dinner appetizers that your guests WILL come back for (other than your food), try to find something at this bakery. They will not disappoint. I brought loaves back this most recent trip and the people I bought them for are asking when I can get them more! PS – Cash/check for retail pick up and order in advance ? Rosemary Pototato is # 5794.

Ms. Julie’s Kitchen Menu with Prices 1809 S Main St, Akron

What a place!! Love love it! Have never been to a place like this before. This is not your typical vegan place. Everything has a purpose here. I felt I was entering a home or my grandmas place. Right from the boom shelf filled with amazing vegetarian and vegan books, to the shelf where they have displayed some yummy vegan snacks, everything is unique. When we entered there where people cleaning the greens and chopping the dill In from of us, just like how it is done at home. They don’t use plastic and use locally sourced ingredients. Don’t judge the place by how it looks from the outside. It is a delight if u just go in ? Yes it is not fancy like the new age vegan places but it’s super cozy and the host makes you feel that too. Oh the food is delish. I wish I could try everything from their menu. This is the first review that I have written is this big and that’s because it is so awesome. I wish there where more places like this. Must visit!
