Daybreak is the kind of breakfast joint you don’t want to pass. The menu offers variations on traditional staples, serving up the classics I look forward to but with a fresh take. The meals are pliable to the cravings of the health-conscious, vegans and gluten-free diners, skimping not a bit in their offerings to folks who indulge in the most hedonistic of breakfasts. Which is to say, their stuffed french toast was spectacular. My boyfriend and I shared it which was good foresight. We slathered it in butter (drawn!) and syrup (maple!) with a pitter-patter of salt. My roommate drizzled Cholula on her half. (soft pass.) The bread was perfectly spongy, a great balance of sweet and savory. The sugar-powdered berries were appreciably abundant. The coffee was notably good. The potatoes were, crisp, fluffy and well-seasoned. Their strawberry preserves are available at every table with a casual spoonful ready for your toast. Such a good touch, makes me want to high-five. My salmon omelette was great. I love a good lox breakfast and I’ve never had it served with eggs and no bagel. The dill and capers in the cream cheese remind you that, yes, this is the ticket. (A sizeable meal, fyi.) My boyfriend got the biscuits and gravy and they were picture perfect. Everything tastes great and the service was wholesome, close-knit and exceptionally kind. Our server was Britney and she was stellar. I didn’t pay the tab so I don’t know how to spell her name but we were all about her attitude. Brittany made everything sound great! She could serve me a carafe of paint thinner and I’d say “omgosh thank u.” So yeah, what a delightful little breakfast spot! I think the inside could use some (4-9) plants and maybe a fan. Support this gem so they can get better tablecloths ? I’m grateful for the tasty food, healthy options, and excellent service! Be back super soon.

Omlette Inn Cafe – Menu with Prices – 15070 Edwards St, Huntington Beach

In my quest to find quality B&G around the OC, I visited Omellete Inn. At first I was the only customer. A single employee ran the front of the house. Since Biscuits and Gravy is not a toast option, I decided not to order an omelette. Instead, I ordered a plate of Biscuits and Gravy. It took a little while but I saw that as a good sign since given the lack of customers, they would have to make it rather than heat it up. What arrived were four halves of real buttermilk biscuits, toasted on a flattop, turned cut side up, and covered with gravy. The biscuits were the drop kind. They aren’t flaky, but cakey. That is fine. The gravy is real gravy, not a mix and tasted good. It could have used a little salt and a lot of pepper. I fixed that and finished the plate. B&G is a dying art and the Omellete Inn is keeping it alive with the real deal. I would like to see an upgrade on the breakfast plates that instead of toast you can get a half or even quarter order of B&G instead of toast. Also, they need a breakfast plate that features gravy besides CFS. The most common is 2 eggs and sausage patties atop a split biscuit covered in gravy, with potatoes on the side. Like a country eggs Benedict.

Ranch Coffee Shop – Menu with Prices – 1872 E Mariposa Rd, Stockton

This is by far THE BEST breakfast place in Stockton! Hands down! This was our very first time going in to eat. Now, we are craft vendors and when this restaurant put on vendor events, we would set up here. We have had many of their lunch items, but always as vendors. So, let’s sum up our orders! I had the biscuits and gravy with bacon and potatoes! The biscuits were homemade and huge! So delicious. You get a huge bowl of gravy, of which I only used about half. The potatoes are sliced and grilled to a perfect crisp. And the bacon was superb! Perfectly crispy! Another at our table got the Bacon and Cheese omelet, added ham and salsa to top top. Along with potatoes and toast and a side of bacon. The omelet was large, and had just the right about of meat distributed through every bite. The salsa is locally made and even sold at the restaurant. The final dish at our table was the Diced Chorizo and eggs with potatoes and sourdough toast. A nice serving and perfect tasting chorizo. I would definitely recommend The Ranch Coffee Shop to ANYONE looking for a great breakfast with a down home atmosphere.

Broken Egg Family Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 10843 W Park Pl, Milwaukee

13 August visit – First time here and totally impressed! Very clean restaurant (just opened I know, but still very clean), and the service was quick in taking my to go order. As I have written in my previous postings I do not usually give a five star rating after the first visit, however I am also on quest to find the best biscuits and gravy in the area, as well as the price point. Both hit the mark here on quality and cost. To accompany the biscuits and gravy, I ordered 2 eggs scrambled with cheese for about a dollar more and worth it as the eggs were done nicely. Now for the biscuits and gravy–Awesome!! It is your basic white sauce gravy but made from scratch, not to mention fluffy and not flat. There is a serious difference between a really good canned gravy and in house made gravy, you can taste it in this gravy. This was not a butter based roux gravy, but a sausage roux gravy which was a really good and a nice surprise, although I had to doctor it up with cracked black pepper to my liking. Additionally the biscuits were fresh and soft, I believe also in house made which again was a good find. Will we definitely be here for breakfast this weekend, you should check out this place. Update – 17 August visit As promised I returned for breakfast this weekend, and accompanied by my wife. Again the seating and attentiveness of the staff was awesome, and the price for two big breakfasts that turned into another meal this morning (18 Aug) came to $18 with tax, not shabby! My wife ordered the house skillet with over easy eggs on side and in house made bread for toast. I was jealous, it looked and tasted so good, next time that is my order. Again I ordered the biscuits and gravy with scrambled egg and cheddar cheese, as they were pretty good on Tuesday. This time however, the flour did not render all the way it was a little flour tasting. This was the case as I took home half the biscuits and gravy as I reheated the gravy this morning and you could still taste the flour initially. No matter, rewarmed the gravy up slowly (on low) and added half and half (which is cream and whole milk), a little beef bullion and a certain liquid gravy seasoning, and this eventually cooked out the flour taste. If do this yourself, separate the biscuits from the gravy while still warm at the restaurant, the biscuits will not soggy the next day. We will back as the prices are reasonable and the quality of the food and service are great. In the future I will re-order the biscuits and gravy, but after this visit I think I will try the skillets and the such. Again, this place is really good and you have to check it out!!

Plexpod Westport Commons – Menu with Prices – 300 E 39th St, Kansas City

I’d been eager to go to the Sundry since the relocation, but just got around to it for brunch this morning. The experience was average in every way. First, the approach from southbound Gillham is pretty awful. There is a sign near the street indicating the Sundry is in the PodPlex building, but if you park around back by what I suppose is/will be a garden of some sort, there is ample parking but no signage leading you to the restaurant. We wandered and almost went into some kind of event space. We asked some other folks walking in and they sent us to Sundry. The breakfast/brunch menu has pretty standard stuff and is fine. We ordered a classic breakfast (bacon, eggs and toast) and the biscuits and gravy. The food came out quickly and looked appetizing enough. But everything tasted bland and unimaginative. We had to ask for jam, which is weird (if you order toast, they should ask), but maybe she just forgot along with forgetting to ask how we wanted the eggs (we told her before we left the counter). The bacon is nothing special, the sourdough seems to be from Farm to Market (delicious), and eggs are eggs. The biscuits and gravy (sausage) were tasteless; the biscuits were really dense. Adding salt and pepper didn’t help much. We both ordered coffee and it is unclear if refills are free (not a dealbreaker, but it would be nice to know). The decor is nice; very modern, attractive and simple. The place was pretty empty, which surprised me somewhat given the other reviews and how convenient Sundry is to midtown and beyond. We’re going to assume this was an “off” day and come back some other time. Once, anyway. There are loads of other reliable places for a great brunch.

Sandy’s Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 6940 Space Village Ave, Colorado Springs

Excellent customer service! Made to feel at home no matter who you are. Been there twice now and everyone I have talked to were nice and made sure I was comfortable while I was waiting for my order. Restaurant was busy and staff energetic, keeping the place clean and in order. Some of the breakfast items on the menu are absolutely HUGE!(They have smaller portion options) For example, my first visit my 6 egg(Yes! Six eggs!!!) Denver omelette was full of ingredients and tasty… worth every penny! The second time, I tried the Country Fried Steak which wasnt gigantic(but you get 3 eggs with it), was great and didnt taste like it came out of a freezer package and was worth the try, as well. You get country potatoes and toast with breakfast or you can forgo that to opt for 2 pancakes or 2 french toast or 2 biscuits and gravy for an upcharge. I opted for the biscuits and gravy… They were only ok the first time, due to a strange sweet taste, but were super the 2nd time and I was happy I gave them a second chance. Even with that small inconsistency, both visits were 5 stars! I’m ecstatic that I found this place on Yelp. It’s going to be my stop to grab breakfast from now on. Give it a try, you wont be disappointed. Just know… they do not have all day hours… more like, brunch hours. ***Edit: Saw reviews stating that it’s cash only… They take credit cards now.

harvest restaurant – Menu with Prices – 5200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville

So, we wanted to try something new for breakfast/brunch this morning, and we’d been eyeing this place for a few weeks. Well, HUGE disappointment, I mean huge. The food was horrendous. Let me break it down for you- I decided on the biscuits and gravy, so let me start with the gravy….the supposed sausage gravy was SO incredibly thick and tasteless it could have easily been mistaken as spackle (like what you use to patch holes in walls). There was absolutely zero sausage taste, or any taste at all. And the biscuits were so dry I was convinced they were baked a week ago. My mom chose the seasonal vegetable omelet and boy.. i thought mine was bad. Her omelet was comprised of STEWED tomatoes, like Rotel, chopped up STEMS of asparagus, and a sprinkling of goat cheese. I am fairly positive the asparagus was bought already frozen, cut and in a bag from the frozen veggie isle in the grocery store. And more importantly, WHO PUTS STEWED TOMATOES IN AN OMELET? A “Seasonal veggie omelet” at that! The omelet shell, the egg part was also a disappointment. Since we were sharing we also ordered some toast with avocado on top. We were given the thinnest, most stale, and most disgustingly crunchy bread. This is the most stale “toast” i have ever eaten, literally so hard you could crack a tooth biting into it. My dad got the eggs benedict with biscuits, eggs, gravy etc. so you can only imagine how good that was……. I won’t even go into anymore detail hah! The coffee was freshly made and tasty, not the best i’ve ever had, but also not the worst. Our server was very attentive to our needs, though it was quite bothersome to me as to how a server could completely ignore our very very full plates. We were asked if we needed to-go boxes, and obviously declined. She did not inquire anymore as to how our meals tasted..it was almost as if she knew no one enjoyed our food so she just ignored the situation all together. I wish i had taken pictures, but i was so upset with our meals i totally forgot. And the last point i will make is that our total bill was almost $60. For two meals and a side dish (biscuits and gravy) that no one ate. VERY VERY disappointing. Myself and my family really take pride in supporting the businesses in Knoxville, especially the new restaurants we get and I can guarantee with no uncertainty that we will not be returning to this restaurant again.

The Original Texas Toast – Menu with Prices – 603 Hearne Ave, San Antonio

-2 for the 20 minutes it took to get our food and the old fruit. BUT the good part the OTHER food and service. My girlfriend and I went this morning, the only 2 people that hour. So a 20 minute wait wasn’t ideal for an omelet, waffle and biscuits with gravy. The servers were attentive 5 servers for 2 people. I’d say losing money on labor but not my restaurant. Now the food: thank you for bring something different to the south side other than tacos. The waffle was nothing special, it tasted like a waffle. The biscuits and chorizo gravy was different but a good taste. IF you like sweet and spicy, as the biscuit was sweet. I didn’t eat it as im diabetic. My girlfriend had the house omelet. It was delicious slightly over cooked as they melted the cheese on top. It came with seasoned potatoes, fruit and toast. The potatoes were slightly greasy but flavorful. the toast was toasted inside the waffle maker making it soft and toasted, not a fan. ( no jelly offered) Last the fruit, horrible you will see in the picture. It screams old. Work out the little quirks and pay attention to detail. Btw, what’s with the blue liquid outside the door?

Shorty’s Cookin Country – Menu with Prices – 603 S Belt Line Rd, Irving

There were some good and then some just average things about this spot. The location is not great and the sign on the front is not appealing. However when you get inside it is just a nice little restaurant. For the food, it was good and it is worth a stop. The best thing by far is the cinnamon pecan pancakes. Absolutely excellent. I had an omelette. The biscuits and gravy that came with them were bad. The biscuits were hard and not good. The gravy was weak and had no sausage in it. However overall everybody enjoyed their breakfast. The pancakes and eggs were all cooked good. Worth the stop if a decent breakfast is wanted

Jimmy’s Egg – Menu with Prices – 550 N Webb Rd suite b, Wichita

This was my first experience and my last if I have anything to say about it. When we were first seated we chose a table over booth as only 4 of our usual group showed up and we thought we’d sit somewhere we could add another table just in case and told the waiter this as he was following us around with the coffee pot as we decided on a table. 20 minutes later I had to flag him down as he hadn’t even stopped to check on coffee/drink refills. He says he thought we were waiting on others and as we said, we might but anytime we have been in that situation before the wait staff always checks on drinks and asks if we are still waiting to order. My water was never refilled, fortunately I drank someone else’s. I ordered a side of hash browns and a side of biscuits and gravy. Another 10-15 minute wait to have him come out with food and say the biscuits were not ready so within another 10 minutes I am out of breakfast and still hungry, still waiting on him to notice my lack of water. He comes out another 15 or so minutes later to say the biscuits were still not ready and here we are, done with our breakfast, I’m still hungry and he has yet to notice my water which is when I say cancel the biscuits and gravy and point out my lack of water. He says he’ll get me more, I said I had to drink someone else’s, he says, at least you have water. He then brings out the tickets, of course my biscuits and gravy are canceled but he then says he took off the coffee’s for the inconvenience. DUDE! I drank water!!! (everyone else had coffee)

Cook’s Cafe – Menu with Prices – 1300 N 66th St, Lincoln

Good breakfast at a good price with exceptional service. It’s simple, clean, and no frills. As I normally do when I’m visiting another city, I went all out. My order consisted of a half order of biscuits & gravy, sausage links, hash browns, bacon/egg/cheese omelette, and 2x blueberry pancakes. The biscuits and gravy were good (and oddly enough had enough pepper…most places never use enough pepper). The sausage links worked well with syrup. The hash browns reminded me very much of waffle house hash browns, which are also good. The omelette was fine, but didn’t really stand out. The best part of the mean was definitely the blueberry pancakes. Those monsters were terrific. Even though I gorged, my bill was still under $25. And my coffee cup never got below half full despite my beat efforts and probably drinking a pot and a half’s worth. Not sure if this joint is worth going way out of the way for, but if it’s close by and you’re wanting a nice down home breakfast; this is a great option.

Delvin’s Restaurant and Catering Menu with Prices 701 S Taylor St, Amarillo

Honestly I don’t know where to begin…. This location was a train wreak this morning in my opinion. Obvious employee issues. Putting that aside, the food just wasn’t that great. Biscuits and gravy were more like biscuits with a thin layer of gravy. I found myself eating only the parts with gravy on it and leaving the rest for the dumpster. Extremely bland. The food service sausage was the highlight of my meal. It also came with previously frozen chunks of potatoes with lightly sautéed hunks of onion and bell peppers. One bite and the rest went with the left over biscuits. Not saying I won’t be back, I just won’t be in a hurry to go back. If I ever do find myself there again, I’ll be trying something else. The omelet looked good, but I was sad to see that it was made with pre-cracked eggs from a carton and not fresh.

Break Fast Grill – Menu with Prices – 310 Polk Dr, Tallahassee

We were headed home this morning and I spotted the word Break on a sign set back from the main road. Curious if the rest of the sign said Fast, we turned around to check it out.It did say Break Fast. And Buffet. Since it was still morning and we hadn’t had breakfast, we had to try it.The restaurant was new. It’s been open about a week. The building is a bit run down but the interior looked clean. There were several two-top high tables along the windows as well as regular tables and chairs in the dining room. We first sat at a high table but when the server brought over the pancakes she suggested we might prefer a larger table. Good suggestion. For $7.97 you get an all you can eat breakfast. Coffee and drinks are extra. Eggs, pancakes and waffles are made to order. All the other items were on a serve yourself buffet. You can check the website to see all that’s on the menu. Salad items were available at breakfast. Ice cream is also available all the time. The two most interesting things to note is that the sausage gravy and grits were delicious. These are two of my least favourite breakfast foods at a restaurant but I always like to sample them at a new place. Their grits and sausage gravy were delicious. The grits didn’t taste like water and the gravy had big chunks of meat in it.The server came over to see if we wanted waffles and pancakes. I ordered a waffle, Walter ordered pancakes. They were perfect. The server was exceptionally friendly and almost mother-like as she kept insisting we needed to tell her to tell the chef to ‘drop some more pancakes.’ Cold cereal and fresh fruit were also available.I am looking forward to going back here to try their lunch buffet.
