It never fails. The restaurants closest to me seem to be the ones I take forever to review. Case in point – a little “rincon” at Mississippi and Chambers called Cuba Bakery & Cafe, which I’m betting you’ll enjoy just as much as I do. As the name may well have given away, a large segment of CB&C’s product line consists of bread and pastry items which are not only very popular on the titular island but also with Cuban communities in places like Florida and Spain (for example). Unctuous puff pastries called Pastelitos may, depending on when you visit, be filled with guava and cream cheese, coconut, or even papaya, while hearty tubes of deep-fried Yuca (cassava) or potato play host to stuffings of beef and chicken respectively. Changing the subject just a bit, the Medianoche or “midnight” sandwich is so named because of its popularity after a bit of nightclubbing, and its amalgamation of ham, pork, Swiss cheese and pickles will be a hit even if you haven’t spent all night shaking your booty. Or, as a way to combine a couple ideas from this paragraph, why not try the sandwich called Croqueta Preparada, stuffed with rich, gooey ham and cheese croquettes? But CB&C is not just a place for scintillating sandwiches and plentiful pastries – perish the thought! Their larger plates are just as pleasing. Although Ropa Vieja colloquially means “old rags” in Cuban Spanish, don’t be alarmed! This is in fact a long-simmered, tomato-based beef stew which will do a little mambo for hours on your palate after you’ve consumed it (especially if you get an order of Maduros – fried ripe plantains – on the side! Mmmmmmmmmm). Or, see what you think of a nice big plate of Arroz Con Pollo – a chicken/rice cookup made even more flavorful with the addition of the popular Cuban spice blend, Sazón. Are you starting to get the picture? But after stuffing your face [URP] to this extent, you have to finish with some coffee don’t you? And boy, have you come to the right place. Whether you want to maximize your buzz with an Espresso or soften it a bit (milk-wise) with a Cortadito, you’ll find that Cubans know their coffee.

Polleria Pablo Menu with Prices 3075 Danielsville Rd, Athens

A great experience. We ordered a whole chicken and a Cuban sandwich! Both were great! One of the best Cuban sandwich in town! Chicken was moist, tender, and overall satisfying. The skin was crispy and was probably one of the best part of the meal! Had two types of plantains (straight fried and tostones) which were both great! I am sure one of them was complementary. The owner and waitress was very accommodating! Will come back again to try the other dishes! There are a lot, including ceviche, seafood soups, stewed beef and many more!

Mango’s Cuban Cafe – Menu with Prices – 1826 Trade Center Way unit c, Naples

Was on the fence about coming here since my husband wasn’t thrilled that I made our one Cuban restaurant stop into a Cuban sandwich tour. This was a mom and pop shop (with both mom and dad working the restaurant). Got here maybe just half hour before their 3pm closing time. Ordered the half Cuban sandwich meal which came with rice and beans (the mom took my order). Looked around as we waited (admired their extensive Spanish soda collection, learned that there is actually a fruit out there called a guanabana, and contemplated getting their avocado smoothie but decided not to). As I was waiting, the pop said “hi, how are you” to me, which I made awkward since I missed it and needed him to explain what he had said to me, lol. The food came out pretty quickly. As others mentioned, their plastic wrapping is a nice touch to prevent spillage, though in my case I probably would’ve been ok since they put the beans in a smaller container with a lid inside the bigger container (also a nice touch). The Cuban sandwich looked small at first glance, but it was so good. So much flavor oozing from the unsuspecting sandwich! They used a good amount of cheese in the sandwich which really helped bind it. Not sure what kind of cheese they used but it was delicious. The rice and beans were both really good too (still good when we ate it cold, still good when we took the sandwich back to NY and reheated it in our toaster oven). The rice and beans were good so I’m glad I got a chance to try it, but wish I had ordered a full sandwich too since it was delicious. If I am ever back in the area, would definitely return to try other things from their menu!

Cuban Restaurant and Bakery – Menu with Prices – 5614 Preston Hwy, Louisville

A friend told me they opened this little Cuban cafe, so I stopped by to try it out. Parking was fine, but wondered if it would be enough on a busy Friday or Saturday night. Parking is shared by several different businesses. The staff was nice and food was okay. I ordered a malterva drink, congri with fried pork, and fried plantains. The congri and fried pork was good. The only complain was I prefer the plantains a little bit more toasted on the outside. Also, the food choices are smaller compared to other other Cuban cafes in town. When I asked for Cuban pastries, they stated they didn’t have any at the time. They did refer me to the Cuban fashion store next door. I was confused that a clothing store would have pastries, but I thought why not check it out. I’m thinking as long as they continue to serve tasty food with good customer service they will grow customers.

CAO Bakery & Cafe – Menu with Prices – 1535 N Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale

So we’d just come out of the Thai restaurant next store and decided to check out this place. We were too full for dessert, but the oriental design style logo beckoned us into what we thought was a bubble tea place with Taiwanese/Korean pastries. How funny! This newly opened bakery and cafe is actually Cuban American! In fact, it was started by one of the owners of Miami’s Vicky Bakery (his grandparents opened the 1st one in 1972). And he plans to open many more franchises while he’s already been busy converting some of the Vicky locations into this new concept. It didn’t dawn on us, however, until we saw the case with several trays of empanadas. Then I picked up the to go menu and saw the Cuban sandwiches, the snacks, and breakfast options (mostly named in Spanish). On the other side of the cashier were two other cases — one with pastries like slices of carrot cake, fruit tarts, cream puffs, et al and the other side had whole cakes displayed. We ogled and drooled, but decided to come back at a future time. When I got home I googled “cao” to find out that it was (as I’d thought) a common Vietnamese and Chinese name. In fact, there was a famous Chinese warlord with that name. But also it was a common name in some regions of Spain — derived originally and shortened from the word “cano” meaning white haired one. Mystery solved. Now I’ll have to come back with one of my coffee loving friends to sample one of their delicious looking treats…

Old San Juan – Menu with Prices – 247 Surfside Dr, Lexington

I lived in Miami for two years, and ever since I moved away I have been searching for that authentic Cuban meal that I missed so much, and this is where I finally felt at home again. The atmosphere is perfect, the food is incredible, and it is very affordable! The waitstaff was so friendly, and helpful to explain nuances to my friend (Hollie) that I brought with me to try the place out. The menu has several Cuban classics, like the Cuban sandwich, arroz congrí, pastelitos, and little pastries that were fresh made and ready to be served. Personally, I got large plate beans and rice and a side order of madrudos, as Hollie got ropa vieja, and we shared a plate of tostones. She also tried cafe con leche for the first time, and she fell in love with it! I had a pineapple jarrito to drink, but of course I took a sip of the coffee, which was delightful. I often go out to eat to get things that I cant make myself, or simply dont want to deal with the hassle, but there’s something about cuban food that I cannot master in my own kitchen. This place has the special touch of magic to make it what I was missing so dearly, to the point of where I was expecting to see palm trees or Dadeland when I walked back outside. Please go give this small business your love, because when you step inside, you will feel their love and passion for their resturaunt.

Super Burger – Menu with Prices – 600-698, S 10th St, McAllen

Ok so finaly made it to this restaurant… after many of my coworkers saying great things i had to try it out. Ok so this first part is important to me and other that dont speak Spanish. I love little restaurants but always fear the hassle of going to them cause i dont speak spanish and sometimes they dont speak English. Make for a rough time and sometimes just easiest to just goto where i know i can order without a hassle.with that being said the waiter speaks good enough english to handle the interaction and did give me a stupid look when i said i dont speak spanish. Disclosure i am not judging them just is what it is. Ok so the food is great fajita tacos homemade corn tortillas made grill and fresh onion with cilantro. Had to test out the wings since I was there got lemon pepper chicken wings. Not gonna say the best weeks ever but i would 4sure eat them again if want some wings. The salsa they give you with the free chips is spicy and great tasting. Will definitely be going back very soon !

Cuban Island Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 5508 Williamson Rd, Roanoke

Thank you yelp for always helping me find the best places to eat when I am out of town! I sent my husband to order food so I could stay in the car with our dog. I got the Cuban sandwich, and my husband got the fried pork with rice and beans and plantains. He also got us a chocolate flan cake and the pineapple flan cake. This place was packed with locals, talking about how great the food was! My husband even got to use his Spanish to order food! The real Cuban bread really made my sandwich special, even though I won’t say it’s the best Cuban I’ve ever had. It was solid, and it was huge, it was easily as big as my forearm. My husband’s pork and rice and beans were delicious, we are trying to figure out how they cooked the rice, I had a reddish tint to it. Flan cakes were out of this world! They’ve recently moved locations, same street just a couple miles down the road. Look for the yellow building!

Churros Cafe – Menu with Prices – 3100 Kingman St, Metairie

Churros Cafe was my first run in with Cuban food a few years ago. I’ve been coming back here ever since. My fave is the Medianoche (midnight) sandwich and their freshly squeezed exotic fruit juices. Authentic and delicious all around! The midnight bread is soft, light and fluffy and the pork, ham, cheese, mustard, and pickles all complement each other very well. I honestly haven’t tried much else, because every time I come here, I crave the medianoche sandwich. The restaurant is tucked in on the east side of Clearview mall. The owners are super sweet and even though they prefer Spanish, they’ll get your order in English too. There’s even a table for the Cuban Mafia, a variety of funny and whimsical signs (such as trade coffee for gossip), and pictures of all the exotic fruits they use to make their juices. Oh and if you have a business card, drop it in for their weekly draws..you might win yourself a free meal!

Nini’s Deli – Menu with Prices – 543 N Noble St, Chicago

We came for a trip to Wisconsin but the second thing we did was kinda plan out our day in Chicago. Nini’s Deli was one of the places that came up when I looked up Cuban coffee, lol yes with the coffee again. Let me just say the service here is exceptional, the guys here are beyond friendly and helpful and definitely deserve 5 star rating. We ordered a cafe con leche and espresso both were ok. I wanted to try a chicken and a beef empanadas so we split one each. I preferred the chicken one better it had more flavor than the beef. We ordered two different sandwiches the Media Noche and the Kitchen Sink. I was a little surprised with the media noche because that’s supposed be on a sweet eggs bread but ok their doing own twist on things cool. Since I’m not a big fan of pickles and mustard I didn’t get to try that sandwich but my sister wasn’t a fan. The kitchen sink I was really excited, well because it has ropa vieja in it. Anybody who has had cuban food knows ropa vieja is a traditional dish in Cuba. So again them doing their own little twist mixing it with Mexican, I’m like oh the different flavors it should be fixed with! Well sadly the ropa vieja was just shredded beef, it had none of the flavors, the bell peppers just man I was a little disappointed.

West Caribbean Cuban Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 2215 S Combee Rd, Lakeland

Worst Cuban sandwich I have ever eaten, tiny portion of meat on the sandwich and they don’t use roasted pork like any real Cuban I’ve had and I’ve had TONS….they use a nasty tasting sliced pork. The bread taste like regular white bread and nothing like true Cuban bread, asked for my sandwich pressed and it was not pressed at all. Beef empanada was dry and tasteless. Breakfast menu was tiny and service was slow and horrible. I was embarrassed that I brought a group of 7 from my job there that’s for sure. Also k ow their FB is fake as they deleted my negative comment on their fake sandwich picture post and never even reached out to me about the issues.

Los Pollos Rotisserie & Cuban Bakery – Menu with Prices – 1372 Third Ave, Chula Vista

We hosted a Havana Nights party and ordered from their catering menu. A tray of Cuban sandwiches, a tray of mini empanadas, a tray of guava pastries & 2 dozen papas rellenas. It was a hit, not much was left. The sandwiches are soooo good, great smoke flavor on the pork, the empanadas were very flavorful we had chicken and beef, what’s not to love about fried meat filled potatoes, but those guava pastries you are just going to have to try them yourself (drool). So, why not a 5 star review? Customer service was lacking a little. The night we placed our order we also ordered food to go, we wanted to sample the items we selected. Got home and we had 3 Cuban sandwiches, nope not our order, I know someone was going to be upset. We ate one, 2 went to waste. I waited a 2 days, called to confirm our catering order since I noticed my credit card wasn’t charged the 50% deposit. No return call. I called one more time to and spoke to the owner, he was busy didn’t have time to speak, no problem. I drove down (from Allied Gardens). I wanted to make sure it was all good and get those samples I had paid for. Confirmed order, paid in full, explained the mix up from the other night, ordered my samples again, paid for those, again. My brother picked up on Saturday the owner was helpful and released the order to him even though I forgot to give him the receipt and the rest was history. I’ll go again, the food was excellent.

Breezeway Deli & Grill – Menu with Prices – Inside Palmetto Hospital, 7160 W 20th Ave # M130, Hialeah

3 1/2 stars This little Cuban place is in the Palmetto Professional building. It is pretty nondescript with some seating, but they do a large take-out business. I stop here for a cortadito or cafe con leche every time I am in the building. The coffee is excellent. Breezeway has a variety of items for lunch. It is a much better option than other places in the building such as Subway. You can get sandwiches and homestyle Cuban food. I once tried a Cuban Sandwich and was a bit disappointed. It was hardly pressed, the meat was not hot, and the cheese was not melted. Recently I tried some Chicken Noodle Soup and it was very good. The broth was flavorful with lots of noodles and tasty chicken chunks. This is definitely something I would order again. I buy Pastelitos and Coladas for my customerd at Breezeway and the staff enjoys them. Moreover, everything there is very reasonable. Breezeway is a great option for an inexpensive lunch and snacks!
