This spot is fairly new and i’m really surprised to see all these high ratings. I’m sure a lot of these reviews are made by friends and family, because that’s how it always is with new businesses, especially small sushi spots. I’ll just go ahead and list all the things I ordered: -Tuna: I’ve worked with fresh sashimi and this definitely wasn’t too fresh. It was that fishy flavor and the color was a dark red/brownish color. -Salmon: Honestly, this one wasn’t too bad. The color was fine and it wasn’t too fishy. -Yellowtail: This one was pretty flavorless and it didn’t taste too fresh as well. -Albacore: Along with the yellowtail, it wasn’t too good on the flavor profile as well. -Squid: The cuts on this was very small, but it tasted pretty okay. -Octopus: The cut for this was fairly big, no complaints. -Scallops: This one was good. Generous portions and great flavor. -Caterpillar Roll: This one was a little disappointing. The california roll portion was a little on the soggy side and small as well. Avocado seemed fresh and the eel sauce was just okay. One main thing I didn’t like about the sushi was that the cuts of fish were unevenly huge and the amount of rice was absurd. I understand it’s not all you can eat, but please do go easy on the rice and cut the fish thinner and more presentable. I honestly didn’t expect much from this location just because this spot always goes out of business and a new sushi spot always opens up in the same place. I do wish that this business would stay open longer than a couple years. Best of luck at this location, but I won’t be returning.

Sushi Yama Japanese Restaurant Menu with Prices 7731 Perkins Rd #120, Baton Rouge

Sushi Yama was highly recommended to me by a friend, so we came here for a date night and found that it has great sushi and great service! We had the little rice roll which came with its own unique sauce (had a strong truffle flavor) and was packed with fish, which was exactly what we wanted. It’s a great, delicious roll to be low carb and really focus on the fish. We also had some of the nightly specials, the smoked yellowtail with apple and some toro (fatty tuna). For some reason I was expecting baked yellowtail so I was surprised when the fish came out but that was completely my own fault as I should have clarified before ordering. It was a unique dish, but I would not order it again. It was our first time trying toro and it was decent, but we were surprised to see that it was $7/slice when we got the bill (again, our fault for not paying close attention). I wouldn’t get the toro again either, but it was nice to try. The waitress helped us out by telling us that you tend to get more fish if you order it without rice and we did get more than the four slices that we ordered so we appreciated that. The service was quick and our waitress was very friendly and helpful. We also sat at the sushi bar and got to enjoy watching the sushi chefs. Overall i would definitely come back here for the high quality sushi and friendly service, but I’d try some different things on the menu.

MISO Japanese sushi & bar Menu with Prices 1111E E Dimond Blvd, Anchorage

This month is my birthday and my husband and I wanted to celebrate it early by going out to get our favorite food, sushi. I looked on Yelp and saw Miso Sushi was a fairly new place with a lot of great reviews. The pictures of the food looked really good as well as the menu so thought we’d try it. I’m so glad we did, it was delicious! Very fresh and tasty fish with unique rolls that are fresh as well and not overly saucy (just the right amount of sauce). They gave us miso soup which was great, the flavor was perfect not too salty and the tofu was melt in your mouth. They gave us edamame too which is a nice touch since not all sushi places provide that. I got Hana Fuji apple flavored sake which was very tasty too. We ordered the sushi & sashimi which was very fresh and good cuts of fish. We also ordered the Fantastic roll which lives up to it’s name, it has spicy yellowtail (which I’ve never had before, most places have just spicy tuna) inside topped with fresh yellowtail, jalepeno, and a dot of Sriracha. Finally, we got the Miso Special roll which was my favorite! Topped with a variety of fresh fish +tobiko with spicy tuna, shrimp tempura (added some good crunch), and avocado on the inside. Whatever sauce it was topped with was good too and not overbearing at all. The waitress gave us fried Oreos for dessert which was a perfect end to an amazing meal. The service was prompt and friendly. We will definitely be back!

Sushi Omakase – Roseville – Menu with Prices – 9213 Sierra College Blvd #160, Roseville

Very pleasantly surprised by comparison to my first interaction with this restaurant. Initially I ordered different things, this time I think I got the right combination. This is definitely the better sushi spot I have found in the Granite Bay, Rocklin areas. I order hamachi Kama, which is grilled yellowtail collar bone meat. It’s very delicious. It’s a fattier part of the body of the fish. And this place not only cooks it very well, crunchy skin and fully cooked, but it is soft and juicy inside. They put it on a bed of greens, which can be eaten after you finish your fish for a delicious after treat. I usually get this with a side of white rice, it is ideal size for lunch. I also love that they don’t put the fish skin-side down, and they vent the container to keep the skin from getting soft or soggy. I also ordered two rolls off of their basic roll menu. Spicy tuna with cucumber and their fresh salmon and asparagus roll, substitute The asparagus that comes with it normally for avocado instead. Both rolls were $6 dollars, they were large pieces, eight pieces per roll. Either way, for under $13 you can get a large lunch here of high-quality fish. The salmon was not fishy in the smell or flavor, but a little bit fatty and delicious. The spicy tuna had a good taste also. It was not very spicy, but rather a hint of spice. And much to my surprise, they threw in a free order of edamame, lightly salted which was yummy. It is served cold, so just be aware of that. I usually go to a different sushi spot on Auburn folsom and Douglas, in the same shopping center as dutch brothers and Bank of America. I’m now changing my lunch destination!

Sakeba Sushi & Grill – Menu with Prices – 5349 W Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy, Kissimmee

Had high hopes for this place from all of the positive reviews. Unfortunately, it wasn’t what I expected but it wasn’t terrible. Went in for happy hour. Shared sake and ordered F appetizer. Miso soup was very good and nigiri and sashimi seemed fresh. The tuna tataki was basically a deconstructed spicy tuna roll, minus the rice. The tuna was the strange low grade minced up kind they unfortunately put on every roll. Cream cheese was also on everything and just very Americanized. I understand that some people really enjoy that kind of sushi but I do not. We ordered the #F combo entree and we were very impressed with the amount of food for the price. Unfortunately, one roll was so incredibly fishy that we couldn’t eat it. I love raw fish and I’m a very adventurous eater but sushi should not be fishy and if it wasn’t happy hour, I would have kindly returned my roll but for the price, not a big deal. Our sever was great and the rest of the experience was pleasant.

Ariake Japanese Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 8708 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax

Having been to the OG Ariake in Reston, it was only prudent to also try their newer establishment close-by here in Fairfax. Settled on the busy intersection/corner of Prosperity and Little River Turnpike, and having taken over what was formerly a Pizza Hut (I think?), this place is much easier to get a seating than the Reston location. Coming on a Friday evening at prime-time 7pm, the place was barely a quarter-full. Wow. Hopefully the lack of business on this Friday is not an indicator of their overall business. In fact, this is such a gem in this area of Fairfax, where not much else exists in the form of “nice” dining. By no means is Ariake-Fairfax fine dining, but it carries itself a step above casual dining. The wide-open space inside is great if you like to people watch (in fact, I do), but at the same time it makes for a less-than-desirable dining if you wish for some privacy. Now for the sushi and nigiri sushi, once again they delivered (albeit slowly). I understand that with one chef behind the counter making the sushi, it can be a bit slow. We waited around 30-35 minutes after our order, for the food to be placed on our table. I would hate to imagine how much time it would take if the place was packed and the chef now had to deal with two, three, maybe even four times as many orders – you could easily be waiting up to 40-50 minutes at that point. Selecting yellowtail, fatty yellowtail, fatty salmon, and tuna as our nigiri sushi, the fatty yellowtail is probably the closest to some toro at non-toro prices. Honestly, being the frugal man myself, I would opt for two pieces of fatty yellowtail over one piece of toro almost any given day. However, if I was taking my special woman out for a wine and dine, you bet I’m going to order that toro (x2). Nothing gets a woman salivating faster than some toro. Just do it, and thank me later. We also ordered the Ariake Roll, Submarine Roll, and the Avocado Tuna Roll. Out of these three, it was obvious the Submarine Roll stood a head above the rest. The combination of the yellowtail and avo situated on top, with with crispy spicy tuna in the middle was a mouthful to experience. Admittedly, it is several dollars more than any of the other rolls at $13.95, but notably distinct from the others. Do yourself a favor and order a Submarine Roll. TL;DR: Another solid experience at Ariake Fairfax. Of course you’ll pay a bit more $$$ than your average restaurant, but definitely the best Japanese in the area. Do the right thing and opt for the fatty yellowtail for that value proposition (over the toro), and Submarine Roll is better than the Ariake Roll.

Sushi House Menu with Prices 2630 Wolflin Ave, Amarillo

This is beyond belief. I eat sushi at least twice a week. Sushi house completely lost credibility. I ordered the sashimi sampler w Tuna, salmon and yellowtail. I have eaten sushi for a LONG time. Never have I had a more RANCID piece of fish in my mouth. The tuna was bad, colorless and looked like it had been bought at a supermarket two days before. Blah. Nasty. The Salmon had good texture , color, and I had one slice of sashimi. The yellowtail was rancid. I almost vomited the minute it hit my mouth. Probably the single worst inedible moment of my entire life. It was soooooo bad. Bottom line, these guys have lost whatever good they had going. Hope I am not sick tomorrow! Do not eat raw fish here. Irony, they still charged me even though I immediately gave them back my order. Told them I will not accept rancid fish. They did not even apologize, but the sushi ass acted like I offended him. He kept staring at me like the “customer is wrong”. I guarantee he would not eat what he served me!! I would rather eat sushi at McDonalds or Red Lobster. Chunk

Otaru Sushi Bar – Menu with Prices – 21 Temple St, New Haven

By far the best sushi I’ve had in years! I was born and raised in Japan, and this was as close as I’ve found to to sushi of my childhood. Simple, super-fresh, and perfectly balanced. More importantly, it was kept and served at the right temperature, which makes a huge difference and keeps me from enjoying a lot of what I get. I tend to be very traditional with my ordering. Being my first visit, I had a few old favorites to get things rolling–miso soup, three pieces of sushi, and a yellowtail roll. If the basics are good, I’ll go bigger next time. The basics were really, really good. Miso: just right; fresh and not too salty. Baby barracuda sushi: rich flavor and amazing texture. Chu-toro: amazing, and a great garnish of wasabi root. Spot shrimp (botan ebi): sweet and buttery, cooked just right, and with another cool garnish that enhanced it. The yellowtail was just as good as the other fish, and the roll was perfectly made–not too tightly packed, and the seaweed arrived still crisp–alleluia! I love that it came with a yuzu-spiked soy sauce all to itself. Naturally, other people ordered other things. Naturally, I stole bites of everything. Seaweed salad: best I’ve had. The Temple Roll was a fantastic combination of silky salmon and yellowtail. The House Special Roll (everything in one giant sliced roll) was great, although the flavors tended to blend. The sweet potato tempura roll was really good as well–firm and sweet on the inside, crispy and light on the outside. The Dragon roll (eel, avocado, and cucumber) was just about perfect. There are another dozen things on the a la carte menu that I’d order next time, but I’m also really eager to try the omokase menus. Service was prompt, knowledgeable, and friendly. The place itself was small without feeling cramped, and a simple, attractive setup. We parked in the Temple Garage and made life easy.

TANE VEGAN IZAKAYA – Menu with Prices – 2065 S Beretania St, Honolulu

When my friend suggested we have dinner at a vegan sushi place, I was first confused and honestly not that excited. I mean, if I’m not vegan, why avoid the best part of the sushi (the fish!)? I was happily surprised at how tasty each dish was! Nasu Agebitashi ($7): A simple starter for the night. Marinated eggplant served chilled. It has a sweet soy sauce taste to it. Not too salty and bold. Philadelphia Roll ($8): This roll is the vegan version of the usual. They change it up by substituting the smoked salmon with smoked tofu. I was “ok” with this dish. It definitely didnt stick out like the other rolls. The texture was also not my favorite (the tofu was firm, yet mushy.) The smoke was nice though. Sweet Potato Roll ($6): This is probably my least favorite of the night. It was exactly as how it is written, fried sweet potato wrapped in sushi rice. It was too much starch for my taste. Sunset Roll ($13): This roll was obviously inspired by the very popular Spicy Tuna roll. Instead of tuna, they use tofu as the protein! They topped it with avocado and a spicy sauce on the side if you want an extra kick. And for a fun aesthetic, they have a small flame at the end of the dish. This flame is not used to enhance the food in any way (we checked with the server). Half Moon Roll ($15) This roll was loaded with toppings! The sushi is a fried sweet potato roll, but they deep fry the whole roll after that. Then they top it off with smoked bean curd, pickled mango, onion, tomato, and sprinkled of shiso, yuzu, and jalapeno. This wasnt my favorite roll, but one of us really liked it. I dont particularly like sweet things with sushi so the mango threw me off. Eggplant Nigiri ($6/2 pieces): This was such a simple sushi nigiri, but it was so tasty! The eggplant was nicely marinated and the miso was a nice touch. Its definitely not the most inventive sushi, but it was made great! This was probably my favorite of the night. Yuba Nigiri ($6/2 pieces): I love yuba so I wanted to try this sushi. The firm texture of the yuba was great! However, the flavor for me was just a bit short. I wish I could taste the yuba more (maybe the rice took that away? Im not sure). Ambiance: The decor was great inside. Very contemporary and Japanese inspired. You can definitely tell its a Japanese restaurant. Lots of wood furniture and decor. The lighting was not too dim or too bright so it was comfortable. Parking: Passing the restaurant there is a small parking lot. The signs on the stalls are missing the restaurant’s name, but you can park there! We checked with the company and they said it is just not updated yet. If the lot is full, hopefully you can find street parking on Beretania, Young St, or somewhere close. Overall: The service was great! The server was kind and even suggested us to try the nigiri sushi; we almost didnt order any, but glad we did! The food was mostly very tasty and impressive, however the price is a little high in my opinion. Fresh fish is the most expensive part in the sushi, but these rolls excluded them and still priced pretty similarly. Maybe because produce is expensive in Hawaii? I would probably go again!

Samurai Sushi Bar – Menu with Prices – 3545 Ambassador Caffery Pkwy, Lafayette

For some reason we always order sushi from this place. Not sure why we haven’t branched out to many other places, but the food never disappoints! We started off with the Fried-Squid. That came out in big chunks, and it was really fresh. You could tell it didn’t come out of the frozen aisle of a grocery store. Then we had mussels, which I don’t think was worth it. There was way two much mustard that took away from the actual mussel flavor. Plus, they only give you two per order. Not worth it. My favorite thing out of the appetizers was the snow crab and salmon salad. It had a good amount of raw salmon packed into it. I could’ve just eaten that and be completely satisfied. Then for the sushi rolls…we ordered the Tuna Tataky Roll, Spider Roll, Samurai Roll, Koko Roll, and the Rainbow Roll (without rice). The Tuna Tataky Roll was really good. I enjoyed the fresh Tuna on top of the sushi roll. There was a prefect amount of rice in there to counterbalance it. The Rainbow Roll was my favorite out of the five, because it had all my favorite fish inside of one roll. The freshness from the fish is what made it worth the price. The Samurai Roll had way too much rice. It wasn’t very tasty. The other two rolls, the Koko and Spider Roll was okay. Nothing too special about them to me, but I’d definitely prefer those over the Samurai Roll. That concludes my review on this place; I will definitely be back!

Kakurega: Sushi Tapas Sake – Menu with Prices – 2574 Newport Blvd, Costa Mesa

I’ve been on the hunt for good affordable sushi in the OC area and as of today Kakurega is the best one I’ve found. My only expectations from a sushi joint is fresh fish, good ratio/portions and reasonable prices. Kakurega meets all those requirements! They serve both traditional sushi/nigiri as well as some more hipster versions of sashimi. We ordered all the usual fish picks: bluefin toro, yellowtail, yellowtail toro, salmon, scallop, eel, albacore. We also got spicy tuna and salmon hand rolls and the bluefin special sashimi thinking it would just be slices of bluefin by itself. Turns out the special sashimi came with the bluefin on a little cucumber “flower” and a little bit of fresh wasabi. I wasn’t a fan of the cucumber presentation or serving method as it took away from the bluefin, but the bluefin was average anyways. After seeing how the special sashimi came out, we asked the server if they had regular salmon sashimi (off the menu) and she was able to get us 4 slices on the side, no cucumbers. I forgot to mention rice here is not very good: quite flakey/hard and falls apart when you pick up the sushi. It was noticeable but not so much that it took away from the fish. Out of all the fish, I think the yellowtail toro was by far the best. I would definitely also ask the server for orders of sashimi off the menu; don’t opt for the special sashimi. In addition to fish, we also ordered the clam appetizer which was very tasty and fresh! The clams (probably 20 or so in one order) came in a salty buttery broth which was delicious. I wanted to drink the broth but it would have been a bad idea, all that butter. Overall I’m so glad I came by Kakurega and found a sushi place I’d return to in OC! 4 stars as the fish was very good, but still not comparable to Little Tokyo.

Avocado sushi – Menu with Prices – 1310 Forest Ave, Staten Island

Four of us showed up at Avocado Sushi place. All of us are deaf and we all grabbed the take out menu, start reviewing and deciding what we want to order. The staff were very patient with us and each one of us took turns to order. We asked for paper and pen and they provided for us. I was the last one to order because I wanted everyone to make sure they understand what they are ordering due to food allergies and dietary restrictions. We all ordered to take home. We didn’t stay in the location. One friend ordered salmon and cream cheese roll, goyza roll, salad with ginger dressing, and chicken teriyaki. She enjoyed her meal. One friend ordered sushi roll that was made out of cucumber instead of using the rice. I never knew they can do that and too bad I’m not fan of cucumbers. Maybe they can do the same with zucchini? She enjoyed her meal. One friend, I forgot what she ordered but it’s sushi related. She was happy with her meal. I ordered Pepper Tuna Carpaccio, Avocado ball, and Tri Color Sashimi. I was sold! Everything was fresh, tasty and delicious. I never had sashimi this fresh before. I didn’t even need to dip piece of fish in coconut aminos. Fresh sushi place in Staten Island is uncalled for. I’m happy I discovered this location and I will be back. If you guys been to Kiku by the train station in South Shore, Avocado Sushi is just fresh as that place.

JPAN – Shops at Siesta Row – Menu with Prices – 3800 S Tamiami Trail #3, Sarasota

If you’re looking for authentic, traditional, sushi this is one of the few places in town that won’t disappoint. I sat at the sushi counter with an aspiring culinary student who I’ve known for a few years and we found out the sushi chef knows his fish (the young Caucasian guy, he’s legit!) Noticing the differences in the color and striations of cuts of tuna stacked together I asked him some questions about it (toro, otoro, chutoro) Turns out they purchase whole fish from a specialty supplier and prepare them on site, unlike most “sushi” restaurants in town which buy frozen bricks of inferior cuts and cover the rolls with a heavy dousing of mayonnaise-based sauces. I was served the best Hamachi I’ve had– the whole fish had arrived that morning and the flavor was exquisite. Hamachi Kama is also available, but not on the menu that I was given at lunch. Their tuna was exceptionally fresh, the crab was real (not surimi/imitaion krab) and the Saba was great too. Sadly, gone are the days when Taste of Tokyo was the only real place here in the 1990’s and you would find giant clam, squid, abalone, flounder and other diverse sushi ingredients that Ben would pick out– the sushi chefs in town say the consumers are mainly after the same standard fare of salmon and tuna so it doesn’t make sense to stock raw product that isn’t selling. I’ve had to adjust my expectations, just wanted to let you fancy people from other areas know the situation in Sarasota.
