A great new addition to the neighborhood! It’s impressive what they do with the tiny little space — cafe by day and (soon to be) bar by night. Despite the fact that the whole place is about the size of my apartment’s kitchen, it doesn’t feel cramped inside. There’s a cozy seating nook, as well as some tables and chairs outside when the weather is nice. I visited on a recent afternoon and got a coffee and a grilled cheese. The coffee was a perfectly executed pour-over with their own non-dairy house milk… some sort of cashew/oat blend if I remember correctly. Either way, it was great. The grilled cheese was delicious as well. I got mine with tomato and avocado inside, and it was perfectly crisp on the outside and oozy in the middle. I’m looking forward to going back and trying the rest of the menu, which includes a variety of toasts and bowls. Everything is made to order, so you should expect to be waiting a few minutes for your food to be ready, but the owner is friendly and happy to chat so the time goes by quickly.

PT’s Coffee Power & Light – Menu with Prices – 1310 Baltimore Ave, Kansas City

This was the only real coffee shop I tried during my stay in KC so I can’t compare it against KC’s coffee scene but, I think it is one of the better shops I’ve been to overall. The coffee selection was good and well thought out. Out of their many bean and blend offerings, I am confident that there will be something there to suit any taste. They also offered an interesting seasonal blend. I opted for a natural process Ethiopian pour over. It was well made by the barista. The roast hit all the right notes. Was a delicious cup of coffee There were a few non-coffee options also. A person in my party opted for a smoothie and said it was delicious and well blended. (The ice particles were perfectly incorporated). There was a small , but nice and varied , selection of pastries. The same smoothie guy also tried the grilled cheese. He enjoyed the Apple slices that was in the sammie. He said it paired well with the cheese. So in summary – Want a coffee? I would recommend this place. Very good coffee!

The Bagelry – Menu with Prices – 1401 Walnut St, Cincinnati

Cute little shop in an area of OTR that I hope continues to grow. I’ve had their bagels at Rooted, and had heard rave reviews about their lox bagel, which is one of my favorite foods of all time (+ haven’t found a place in Cincinnati that can do a lox bagel correctly yet). After finally making it to the brick & mortar location, I opted to try a few other things on my first visit. I got an egg sandwich + wheat bagel to eat right away, and a rosemary bagel with the vegan cheddar cheese spread for later. The egg sandwich was phenomenal. The bagel was great (very obviously boiled! yay!) + the perfect mix of crunchy and chewy. Lots of egg, and wrapped perfectly so that I could eat it on the go. The rosemary bagel was also delicious – I liked it better than the wheat bagel. I was so excited they had 3 vegan cream cheese flavors when I visited – such a rarity for Cincy! – but the cheddar cashew cream cheese was just okay. I probably did it wrong by pairing it with the rosemary bagel, but it did nothing for me, and wasn’t as good as other cashew cheese I’ve tried. Bummer. Definitely coming back for the lox bagel when I’m back in Cincy next. What a great addition to OTR!

The Picnic Tap – Menu with Prices – 900 Rosa L Parks Blvd, Nashville

Pretty nice find inside the Farmers Market as we stopped by the Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park to find a “snack”. We ordered a pimento grilled cheese and the southern hot dog, which were both pretty big, especially the hot dog. My grilled cheese was yummy, and I’d have it again. You gotta have pimento cheese when you’re in the south. The only thing I’d say is that even though the bread was crisp and toasted, some of the inner cheese was still unmelted and cold. It was kind of an unconventional bread choice, but still good, but it’s probably why all the cheese didn’t melt. My bf liked the hot dog as well. Price was also very cheap so we were happy!

Custom Cup Coffee – Menu with Prices – 319 E Monroe St, Springfield

Great food! The Vegan options for pastries are nice, a bit pricey for the size of a donut($3.00) and a teacake but tasty ($4.50). Lunch doesn’t start until 11 so if you have a grilled cheese in mind for breakfast forget about it! But you can get a fried egg sandwich with cheese and bacon but not just a grilled cheese. The Vegan taco pot pie is flavorful and hearty, I even loved the vegan sour cream; they should go easier on the onions in the pico. My 1st visit I had a small cup of decaf… I tried it again today, it was decent; I think I’ll stick to my $1.29 cups of coffee at McDonald’s. Over all its a cool little spot expect to spend at least $15 each visit and remember to support small businesses! #shopsmall #vegan #coffee

Caboose Commons – Menu with Prices – 2918 Eskridge Rd, Fairfax

A great place to socialize with your furry friend and relish in some comfort food! I really appreciate that aside from beer, there’s cider and wine on tap and cocktails. The farm to table culinary dishes are all made in-house and a big step up from traditional bar food with a variety of vegetarian and healthy dishes. Old Hill Betwixt Cider (5/5) – The Shenandoah cider is mildly sweet and refreshing. The Grilled Cheese (5/5) – Hits the spot with oozing rich mascarpone and blend of farmhouse cheeses and herbs sandwiched between buttery house-made bread. I was so full from the grilled cheese that I barely had room for the fries. The fries were a bit too salty for me, but my hubby devoured them. Avocado Toast (3/5) – Too salty and overwhelming flavors. While the buttery toast was generously loaded with slices of avocado and a heap of greens, I wish the avocado was chunky and mashed up. A heavy pour of sea salt and copious sesame and poppy seeds on the toast smothered with butter overpowered the avocado. Just drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of seeds while holding the salt would have gone a long way. Nachos (3/5) – Albeit I got vegetarian nachos without the BBQ Boar Shoulder, they were bland with little flavor. The pimento cheese sauce was underwhelming and didn’t have the spicy kick that I was hoping for. The best part is the casual atmosphere of dog lovers! The dogs are trained and friendly and the owners are super nice! Our beloved Keeshond puppy had a blast socializing with other dogs and meeting people. Her fluffiness attracted curiosity of countless people and copious petting. If you’re not a big fan of dogs, there’s space plenty of space inside. Come early as the place was packed on a bustling Fri night @ 9pm and we had to scour around for a table. Excited to come back for Shanti to make some new friends and try some mac and cheese!

Gypsy Place Coffee and Juice Bar – Menu with Prices – 90 Hampshire St, Cambridge

FYI: Their breakfast toast is not really the open face, stuff lying on top of a piece of bread kind of toast you might initially think. It’s a full blown sandwich which is even better. WHAT I GOT: Iced coffee & plain bagel w/ avocado mix // latte & breakfast toast with avocado mix PROS: Y’all I did not eat/drink all of the stuff in the previous section on one day. I came here twice in the same weekend when I came up to Boston for a visit because YES, this place is that good. They serve up some seriously amazing coffee and some equally as amazing food. The bagel I had on the first day was quite literally the size of my whole hand and that avocado mix they put in there was freakin delicious. Don’t be fooled by the name, it’s not just a chopped/mashed up avocado. I don’t remember what exactly they added to it but it kind of reminded me of a breakfast like guacamole. Either way, I loved it so much that I requested them to put it in my breakfast toast (sandwich) the next day. They used some real nice cheese for that sandwich too, and toasted the whole thing so it was oozing by the time it got to me. Great portions, great coffee, and great interior decoration. This place is now my go to if I’m ever back in Boston again. CONS: Menu can be a bit deceiving/under explained so maybe a few more descriptions wouldn’t hurt so people know exactly what they’re ordering but all in all, no negatives about what they serve.

Georgia Street Grind – Menu with Prices – 1001, 25 W Georgia St #101, Indianapolis

This is one of my favorite coffee shops in Indy. The baristas are always friendly, and they are expert drink makers. I normally get either a latte or an americano. They have both been delicious every time I have stopped in. They sell while been coffee there, as well. They have their own blend, which is really good. My last americano from there was made with their signature blend, and it had great flavor at the top middle and end of each drink. They also had a couple coffees from other roasters (including Blue Mind, which is a great local roaster). They sell sodas by the bottle, too. My family likes Sprecher root beer and cream soda, so I will sometimes grab that, too. One thing to know before you go: There isn’t any seating in the coffee shop, so everything is “to go.” Having said that, they are located right on Georgia Street about a half block from Pan Am plaza, so there plenty of places to hang out and sit outside on a nice day. I recommend Georgia Street Grind without hesitation.

Southern Squeeze – Menu with Prices – 1301 Dorchester Rd, Chattanooga

You may notice that I gave it five stars. That’s kind of a big deal for me, as I don’t like to just throw 5-star reviews around will nilly, I like them to really mean something (despite the fact that I have more 5-star reviews posted than any other number – I just only ever review places I really like, I guess). Now, this place really serves to a particular demographic, but it does so really, really well. Is it for everyone? No. But I’m totally comfortable saying that if you’re vegan or want some really inventive raw foods, you’re probably going to really like this place. So to go along with that statement, here’s my only heads up: Since they only serve raw food, don’t come here looking for comfort food. An example is the Grilled Cheese and Tomato Bisque. Sounds cozy, right? Who doesn’t love a hot grilled cheese with tomato soup? Nobody. And is this iteration good? Heck yeah it’s awesome. Is it warm and comforting? Sure isn’t: it’s cashew cheese on slices of bread with cold tomato bisque. So, go in knowing what you’re getting and you’ll love it. Great place.

Donut Basket – Menu with Prices – 1725 Prescott Rd, Modesto

Even their sandwiches are delicious! I ordered a Turkey Club with avocado, husband ordered Ham Club with Avocado. Both came on lightly toasted croissants, with mayo, fresh tomato, fresh iceberg lettuce, fresh red onions, and plenty of perfectly ripe avocado. Mom orders a small BLT, perfect size for her with plenty of bacon. The bacon was thin and lightly crisp. Our son ordered a ham, egg, and cheese sandwich. Came on a fresh bagel. Our picky eater approved . Of course we had to get donuts. All were fluffy, fresh, and not oily. They even give you the donut hole that came out of it! Sweet bonus!! this isn’t our first time here for donuts and I think it’s safe to say we now like their donuts more than a very popular place in town (“best donuts in the valley”). This place is always clean, with very helpful, friendly staff. Give it a try! You won’t be disappointed

CALIBOMBNIA – Menu with Prices – 17446 Kuykendahl Rd, Spring

All the reviews are spot on! This place is 10/10.. Now it’s not In N Out but, it’s definitely really good. For starters you get fresh avocado and bacon(I don’t even eat bacon but, it was so good!!) did I mention FRESH?! I was skeptical because, it is placed inside of a gas station but, it’s definitely worth a try. I got me and my boyfriend the original Cali burger combo! You get fresh avocado, bacon, red and white onion all on this burger. Even the bun tasted fresh. The fries? Perfectly seasoned and crisp. I forgot to take pictures because, it looked so good but even the size of the burgers is perfect, a bit too big for my liking, but for the price the combo is worth it. I will definitely be back! (Also, the size of the thousand island dressing they give you on the side is a decent amount, compared to where most restaurants may give you a wee bit). Don’t miss out on this really great restaurant since it’s in a gas station. Thank you!

The Juice Laundry – Menu with Prices – 1411 University Ave, Charlottesville

Juice Laundry (JL) located on the Charlottesville Corner is a convenient smoothie+ shop for UVA students and residents of Charlottesville alike to sit down and enjoy some feel good health food. It’s in-house prepared, entirely vegan menu helps you feel a little bit more justified for paying some of the high prices that their 8 oz. smoothies command. I ordered the Blended Brew (Mocha), which was a delicious blend of cashew milk, dates, cacao nibs, bananas, cashew butter, cold brew coffee, and a dash of cocoa to give it a slight chocolatey finish. The smoothie was very creamy, and felt heavy in a surprisingly pleasant way. I imagine some of the more fruity smoothie options will fall a little lighter on the stomach, but as a dude with a big appetite, the Blended Brew definitely felt like a drink more my speed. I also ordered an oats bowl to have something a little more solid with my smoothie. Their oats and quinoa bowls are served chilled, and the grains are soaked overnight in cashew milk that they prepare in-house, a detail that I found both impressive and authentic. Each bowl comes with your choice of up to three toppings, of which I ordered banana slices, granola, and cashew butter. I had never had cold oats before, but I found the cashew milk gave the bowl a delightfully sweet undertone that was neither overpowering nor lost amidst my medley of toppings. As far as the broader experience and ambiance, JL’s bright white walls and wooden benches combine to deliver a blend of clean and natural that I think their food very much attempts to emulate. The employees seemed very friendly and helpful as I navigated through their extensive offering of various nuts and berries that I could add to any of my orders, but I did find myself running out of patience as I waited for my name to be called. Perhaps that is the price one pays to enjoy very fresh, made to order vegan food. Overall, JL is a boujie person’s smoothie joint. The prices are pretty high, though at the generous 20% discount that they offer all UVA students every Thursday (2017/18 academic year), I think it is a great place to grab some breakfast food in between classes. There are not a lot of smoothie options in general in the American restaurant scene, but JL’s smoothie options and more hearty grain bowls offer some fitting variety on the Corner.

The Hookah House – Menu with Prices – 1325 Broadway, Boulder

I must caveat this review with the statement that I am in my thirties while this place seems to cater to a college crowd. However I can at least report on the quality. I decided to give this place a shot at around 9PM on a Saturday. It was loud with college students, which I didn’t mind given the neighborhood and day of the week. I sat down and a friendly young guy came and took my order fairly quickly, and not too long after I got my ordered nargila and tea. I am pretty well versed with hookah, nargila, shisha, etc having lived for years in the Middle East. So I know when the equipment isn’t well cared for. There was a very strong mildew taste to mine, so I knew it wasn’t being sanitized correctly. I also got one that doesn’t use the normal disposable tip, which further leads me to question how sanitary this place truly is. Beyond the mildew the flavor was obviously straight out of a jar and not a custom cross-blend like better places use. Even were it not for the loud atmosphere I would still not likely go back because there are better quality hookah bars in town that spend a little less time toking and a bit more time running a quality business, blending quality flavors, and cleaning their gear.
