I adore this place. The “kiddie” size is sufficient for me and it’s a nice regular sized portion that I can actually finish. It’s $3 which once a month you can lower to $2 with the GCM phone app. The larger sizes are UNREASONABLY HUGE, so if for some reason you want a cantaloupe-sized portion of shaved ice, you can get that here! They are very friendly and patient and there are stools where you can sit and eat at the counter. So far I’ve had: cherry, coconut, blue raspberry, vanilla, “melona” (it’s cantaloupe but it’s green, so, Galia melon? LOL), and granny apple, all of which I liked. I do kinda want to try every flavor so at some point I’ll probably hit one that’s too sweet for me or gross but not yet! I am a giant “shaved ice” fan so it’s perhaps normal that I’d love my local place, but I figured it was still worth writing a review because if they were in any way not awesome, or less good than my standards, I’d have said so. So rest assured that you are in good hands here, if you are also a shaved ice devotee. Edited to add that guava and kiwi both taste like boring sugar water to me–and I know guava–and dreamscicle was very nice and not Triaminic-y at all as I’d feared. Yes, I am continuing to try them all ?

The Alleyway Grille Menu with Prices 2477 Arctic Blvd, Anchorage

Remember steak night at Koots? It was one of the only reasons I ventured into that bar. Well, these are the folks that were slingin’ the steak! They now have their own spot in the space formerly occupied by Arctic Roadrunner. First of all, I LOVE the hours! 10am to 5am. That is NOT a typo. It’s so rare to get hot food (that’s not Taco Bell or Leroy’s) in this town past 10pm…let alone all the way until 5am! I came right when they opened, at 10am. I was the only person in here. Service was friendly. I got the veggie skillet which had a welcomed, generous, portion of Brussels Sprouts. The “hash” part of the skillet was straight-up french fries! It came with a cup of cantaloupe. I usually don’t have nice things to say about cantaloupe or it’s green cousin honeydew…especially with regard to fruit salads but…this was probably the best cantaloupe I’ve had in the states! (Warning: about to sound like a braggy prick) The only cantaloupe I’ve had better than this was in Italy. But, all the cantaloupe there is incredible. (it’s technically a different kind of fruit that what we have, it’s way, way sweeter) Coffee was hot and from Uncle Leroy’s, my favorite coffeeshop in town. Definitely give them a shot!

Haole Boys Shave Ice – Menu with Prices – No physical location, Huntington Beach

This shaved ice is amazing!! And the last time I had shaved ice was in Hawaii so my standards are pretty high. There were so many flavor options I couldn’t decide so I went with the rainbow (a nice combination of 3 main flavors) topped with the condensed milk. The employee serving me was super friendly and efficient, and made sure to put a good amount of condensed milk after I told her how much I liked it! The ice was light and fluffy and the flavors were great. The condensed milk went very well with all the flavors and made the consistency very delightful. The ice didn’t melt too fast but it was a hot day so we ate ours pretty quick. I was amazed that it actually cooled me down a little bit! Gotta love shaved ice on a hot summer day! We will definitely be on the lookout for this shaved ice brand. I highly recommend!

Junkanoo Cafe – Menu with Prices – 1330 Lake Bradford Rd, Tallahassee

Unique Wonders was definitely a unique find here in Tallahassee, they would make an excellent food truck or cart out at festivals. They serve shaved ice, cotton candy, cajun boiled peanuts, nachos,CONCH FRITTERS and some other items. So I haven’t tried the conch fritters but I’ll have to go back I love Bahamian food. Anyway, I had the shaved ice Pink Champagne and Guava flavors. LET ME TELL YOU it was so good I felt like I should be at a fair headed to get on the Farris wheel. This place is literally like your favorite carnival food everyday. They had so many flavors for such great prices! $1.75 (S) $2.75 (M) $3.75 (L) Friendly, Affordable and Local. They are located on Lake Bradford across from the old closed church’s location. It’s a small space but friendly and definitely worth a stop on a hot summer day. I was here volunteering for their back to school event I was impressed they gave away hot dogs, cotton candy and shaved ice. You can tell the owners really care about the community.

Bahama Buck’s – Menu with Prices – 4910 E Chandler Blvd #101, Phoenix

Bahama Buck’s has many flavors for everyone in the family. There is also smoothies and other things, it’s not just shaved ice. I usually order a warheads shaved ice because I love sour things. There are also sweet flavors for the shaved ice like cotton candy and birthday cake, so you can get something sour or sweet. The service is amazing and you get your dessert 3-5 minutes after you order usually. Sometimes they don’t put enough flavoring on the shaved ice, but if you ask for more flavoring at the pick up counter, they will put more on there for no fee. Overall, it’s a great place to go on a hot summer day with your family if you’re craving some flavor.

Daiwa Sushi Bar & Japanese Cuisine – Menu with Prices – 4100 Veterans Memorial Blvd Suite200, Metairie

I was torn as to whether I was going to leave a review or not, but after some discussion with my husband, we decided we should comment. The place has a great atmosphere and decor. I really enjoyed the music personally also. We went for a lunch date and it was the perfect environment for the occasion. The bar manager was very nice and his drinks were perfectly crafted. I had the cantelope mojoto and my husband had the dragonberry. Both were great but I didn’t really get the cantaloupe flavor much. It was delicious all the same. Our server was great too, the server at the table next to us definitely was not as great for his table because he seemed very young and said some inexperienced things that we tried very politely not to laugh out loud about. The specials flown in from japan are pretty cool and I could definitely see how someone would appreciate the variety and unique qualities of what the menu offered. I personally felt it was all way too much. There is a picture menu which is pretty cool, but if it’s going to take me 20 minutes to make it through the menu and see 18 things that I might like, I am going to get annoyed when it’s time for me to decide. The special crunchy roll was the best thing we ordered for both price and flavor. We also got baked scallops which were very good but there was only one of the mushroom that I didn’t get to try but husband said was really good. The regular crunchy roll was fine, but I typically judge sushi based on how good their most basic crunchy roll is. It was ok, better than it looked but nothing worth writing home about. The three stars come from the Sunrise roll. I was hesitant to order it even though it jumped out at me. I typically shy a way from cooked rolls but I love fried oysters and the waiter said he did too. He said he loves that roll. That’s his opinion and mine is that it was the worst thing I ever tasted from flavor, texture, ingredients, and cohesiveness of the ingredients. It was horrible. My husband ate it because we paid for it but couldn’t make it through the last two pieces. I tried eating it in individual pieces trying to see if it was the combo that I just didn’t like. But no, every thing about it was disgusting. That one roll changed my entire experience and ruined the good taste that I had from the things that I did like. I hesitate to leave a 3 star off of something that I personally didn’t care for, but I had to share. It was just gross and after I had that taste in my mouth nothing else was memorable. I can honestly say the prices were reasonable for the atmosphere. The drinks were good. But truthfully, I would not likely go back because nothing was overly amazing on the food side and I really just can’t get over how bad that roll was.

The Shaved Ice Bar – Menu with Prices – 19810 Village Center Dr # 130, Fort Myers

It’s the classic story. Boy wants ice cream, girl doesn’t want to go into a lactose intolerant coma. Cue, Hannah Montana “You get the best of both worlds.” This Shaved Ice bar has just about any flavor you could want in addition to natural flavorings and pillowy ice. The biggest shock was that The Shaved Ice Bar also has craft ice cream! The boyfriend got Dutch chocolate and cookie dough with sprinkles while I went with a classic blue raspberry and strawberry shaved ice. They also have nitro coffee and wireless charging mats on all the tables so you can charge your phone while you enjoy the shaved ice. We will absolutely be back! Pro tip: if you save your spoon and bring it back the next time you get a topping for free.

Pycone Creamery (inside Benny Marconi’s Pizza Shop) – Menu with Prices – 120 Campbell Ave SE, Roanoke

This place was so much fun! I can’t possibly fit in one review all the many things that make this place so unique…but will list just a few for your reading pleasure! The pizza here is NY style thin, and sliced so large a giant could leave full! It’s in your face good, and the laid back serve yourself setup is perfect. Order up front, they’ll call your name, and all the condiments and drinks are off to the side ready for you when you need them. They have this crazy sized pizza eating contest if you are man/woman enough for the challenge…that would have been fun to see firsthand for like the first 5 minutes…but after that I am guessing it just gets super gross to watch someone gorge themselves trying to eat it all within a certain timeframe. So maybe I am glad no one was working for the prize while I was there! Ok, now what put this place over the top for me (and garnered the last star up above) was the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip used as wallpaper in the bathroom. Ok, childhood nostalgia at its best!!!! I love Calvin and Hobbes!!!! Anyways, this place has good times written all over it!!! So glad we came by this local pizza place while in Roanoke…couldn’t have asked for better pizza!

Pushkin’s Bakery & Cafe Roseville – Menu with Prices – 1220 Roseville Pkwy Suite 140, Roseville

Terrible. Ordered pastries and coffee to eat there. The pastry case contents didn’t look too appetizing – weird muffins without the best part – muffin tops (they were flat and looked like they were broiled…), shiny cupcakes, unevenly baked pastries. Limited selection. Ordered a coffee cake and a “morning bun” (which is a misnomer – usually morning buns are made or croissant dough, with cinnamon sugar and are flaky buttery miracles, but this one was more like a muffin in look). The morning bun was actually gross. It tasted like stale, sliced white bread with a cheap raspberry filling. It was also under-baked. The coffee cake was better but it was a tad dry and definitely unevenly baked (ones side was burnt). Both were much worse in flavor and texture than what you can get at a generic chain grocery store. We ordered “for here” but the person helping us wanted to give us our pastries in bags – had to ask for plates which was odd. Espresso drinks were poorly made – cappuccino and latte were the same size and had the same insane amounts of milk. They use nice beans but my coffee was very weak. I’m used to tiny tables / crowded cafes, but the vibe here is very “cafeteria” vs “cafe cozy” so the crowded metal table arrangement is awkward. I found myself here given nice social media images from local friends, and literally couldn’t believe my experience. This review sounds harsh and I don’t like writing it (I usually just skip writing reviews altogether when I have this kind of experience) but I’m tired of inflated ratings because people with bad experiences are quiet.

Wolverine Farm Letterpress & Publick House – Menu with Prices – 316 Willow St, Fort Collins

I don’t know why I haven’t reviewed my favorite place in Fort Collins yet! There’s so much about Wolverine that makes it awesome! They are a vital part of the community offering a space for meetings, crafts, writing, weddings, art etc. there is even a little gift shop that features items from their letterpress and from local artists. You can pick from games to play while you sip on your drink. They have coffee, tea, beer and wine and I usually have a hard time choosing between coffee and the local craft beers. They serve simple but delicious soup/salad options between 11am-2pm. Often, there is free popcorn up for grabs too! The patio is spacious and the perfect place to hang out when the weather is nice!

HeeMee Coffee + Bakery – Menu with Prices – 20 E Congress St Suite 110, Tucson

This newly opened small bakery serves bingsoo and other delectable desserts. Bingsoo is a Korean dessert made with shaved ice and toppings are added. At HeeMee’s, the bingsoo is made with milk-shaved ice and you can choose from 4 flavors-green tea, mango, strawberry, or oreo. For approximately $8.00, this dessert is a big portion, especially if you’ve already eaten lunch and want to nibble something sweet afterwards. The mango bingsoo comes with cubes of mango, mochi, condensed milk, almonds, and maybe mango syrup. The milky shaved ice combined with these toppings makes bingsoo a must-have dish! HeeMee also serves baked goods, including cookies, muffins, and cakes. I tried the pecan, macadamia, chocolate, and caramel cookie today. It was baked to perfection and crunchy from the nuts. Definitely try out different baked goods if you’re here! There’s also coffee here that I have yet to try! The decor consists of a modern yet simplistic look that is simply adorable!

New State Burgers & Spirits – Menu with Prices – 1705 NW 16th STE A, Oklahoma City

With burgers in the name, you’d expect some fire burgers and the good thing is that they definitely delivered! Flavor is awesome, you get 2 patties, quality of the meat is decent, and they’re not over cooked. You can get a basic cheeseburger or get something out of the ordinary if you’re feeling adventurous. Let’s start with the good: FOOD Hot hamburger -$11. 5/5 Fuego. Flavor is on point. Gravy and the fries takes it to the next level. Definitely recommend. The Statesman – $10. 4/5. Flavor is also on point but the beef can be a tad dry if you get a bite without the aoili. Maybe an au ju dip or just juicier beef in general would make this perfect. Side of fries – $3 4/5. Crispy, hot, flavorful. Portion definitely is not worth $3 though. For 1/3 of the price of an entree, I’d expect a bigger portion or cheaper price for what you get. SERVICE: 5/5 service was nice and quick. Food came out reasonably fast. Pour your own water was nice so you don’t have to flag your waiter down for refills ENVIRONMENT/ AMBIANCE 3/5 Waaaaaayyyy too loud in there. Also kinda feel like they don’t know what they’re going for. Seating is close and intimate, almost café/ coffee shop style. Nice silverware and plates with cloth napkins, Bar next to the seating area with a big flat screen tv which is fine. But they’re blaaaasting music you’d hear in a club/ bar. The music just doesn’t go with the rest of the vibe. I’m down for that type of music, but maybe not when I’m trying to have dinner and sitting super close to other people. It just makes it hard to hear anything in there. Overall worth a try. Entrees are tasty and reasonably priced. Service was good. If they changed the music and figured out how to dampen the echo, it would be perfect .
