Ah, Cafe Bonjour. I remember coming here before I was even allowed to drink coffee, well if you count the time I was in Vietnam w/o my parents and I drank iced coffee every morning for my whole time there. Hehe.. Well my parents made a special trip here every other Sunday to stock up on coffee, and their pate for my mom. We usually went here after we went to Mi La Cay (the noodle house in the same strip mall). This place has been a long time staple too in our household. I remember when we moved to Albuquerque, and everytime we went to CA, my parents would stock up on as much coffee as they could. Now that they’re back in CA, it’s all good. Now that I am older and wise enough to appreciate a good roast, I too cannot live w/o them. I love their house roast, Bon Jour, the Vanilla is good, and so is the Cognac roast. They carry a wide variety of blends and flavors. Now that I live in Seattle, I have my parents send me coffee. Trust me, I have not found anything out here that is adequate enough for my Ca phe sua da, I don’t even know if they have places like this out here. Well it’s ok because my parents send it to me. Like Cecile says, you can buy them whole beans or have them grind it. Which is what we do, since my coffee grinder doesn’t do as good for our Vietnamese filters. It is sold by the pound. Prices have gone up over the years. It was 4.99 a lb back in the day, now between $6-8, worth every penny and drop!

The Urban Cup – Menu with Prices – 2225 E Grand River Ave, Lansing

I read an article about this coffee shop in one of the local papers…maybe City Pulse? I was suprised by the claim made regarding dark roast coffee. They say they dont offer dark roast out of respect for the bean and the roaster. They find that a large percentage of people are looking for the full, robust flavor of a dark roast, but not the bitter aspect. As an avid dark roast drinker, I wanted to try this place out to expand my coffee experience and test this theory. I walked in with an open mind and walked out with the most bitter cup of coffee I possibly have ever tasted. I’m not sure what happened. The urban cup left a very bitter taste in my mouth, I only took a few sips and threw it in the trash. Not impressed, not swayed by their claim. If you are going to make such bold statements, back them up please.

Palace Coffee Company Menu with Prices 817 S Polk St #2, Amarillo

This roast is pretty good, gosh, I think I can even taste the honeycomb tasting notes. You can serve lite to medium roast all you want but don’t suggest I like coffee that tastes like an ashtray because I prefer dark roast. The coffee taste is ok but overall it is weak like a blonde roast. Ruta Maya in Austin makes great coffee. Their medium roast I don’t prefer but many people do. I get that the coffee perfectionists don’t want to burn the bean but you don’t have to argue the point. As purists, we at Palace Coffee prefer that you drink the coffee that we feel you should like best. And what you will like best is weak with hints of huckleberry.

Thomas Hammer Coffee Roasters – Menu with Prices – 122 N Wall St, Spokane

I absolutely love tomas hammer. Their premade combos for coffee are excellent. It was the first coffee I had in Spokane and still a favorite. This town has so many amazing coffee shops. It is hard to say what is the best, but for me their espresso roast it a medium to mild roast that is as smooth as it gets. If your a dark roast fan you can’t beat Atticus. I however think this place is exactly what coffee should be.

Coast Roast Coffee – Menu with Prices – 801 Magazine St, New Orleans

Coast Roast Coffee is located in the Auction House Market, and serves custom espresso drinks (both hot and iced) and drip coffee. This business is fast and efficient, and employs very pleasant baristas. I popped by on my way to a morning meeting, and was very pleased with my experience, until I tasted my coffee. This coffee had more body than Arnold Schwarzenegger in his hey-day. It basically leapt out of the cup, punched me in the face, and scampered off across the street to beat up an old lady. I’m all about strong coffee; I need that extra kick in the pants to get me going in the morning as much as the next girl, but Coast Roast has me beat. Almost literally.

Milone Brothers Coffee Co – Menu with Prices – 1413 Lone Palm Ave, Modesto

The best coffee in Modesto. One of only two coffee roasters in Modesto City proper, Milone has been roasting superior coffee for almost 30 years (since the late 80’s). It all began as Plantation Coffee Company, a roastery & full service cafe. They closed the cafe part of the business long ago, & today operate as wholesale distributors. Where can you sample some Milone coffee? Several local businesses carry them…Sabatino’s, Michael’s Pizza, Papapavlo’s, Velvet Creamery, & Picasso’s, just to name a few. I was particularly impressed to learn that the coffee I had at Sabatino’s, which I loved, was just one end of a surprisingly broad & prolific spectrum. From Brazilian roast to Fogburner, there’s a roast for every palate. And after sampling just 2 of their roasts, it was easy to surmise that any coffee lover will find a Milone roast that he or she loves. Not a business owner? No problem. You can come in & purchase beans by the pound. But remember that this isn’t a full service cafe. I had the pleasure of meeting Scott during my most recent visit. Scott knows everything about coffee. He’s basically a walking & talking coffee encyclopedia. He is also beyond personable. A gem. This is the best coffee in Modesto. 5 stars.

Water Street Coffee Joint (Downtown) – Menu with Prices – 315 E Water St, Kalamazoo

It’s a year ago I want to wash it and I have an amazing time it’s a great place to have coffee and her staff is amazing and I really love to go back it was enjoyable and the coffee was tasty and everything had to do with why street right in downtown and if anyone has to go somewhere for a coffee place in Kalamazoo I would definitely recommend water Street. I think I remember I had espresso and it was delicious and just write my touch is it close to all the great spots to eat at two and near the Radisson hotel. So if you’re in the area and looking for a neat place to check out a vacant water Street. So it’s not exactly Grand Rapids but it’s something to think about. They sure know how to get the pastries baking so either place and they roast their coffee in the warehouse and I would simply say they’re the best there’s another places too but I just think that a cool hipster spot

MoonBean’s Coffee – Menu with Prices – 6221 Santa Teresa Blvd, San Jose

Been coming here for a few years now. The coffee selection is awesome! From light, to medium, to dark roast, each type is split into 3 lists. My favorite is the Jamaica Blue coffee, which is NOT always in stock, but that somehow makes it even better. They only get one batch a year. Its 100% pure Jamaica Blue coffee beans which is, you guessed it, straight from Jamaica! “Right near the beach!” (Sorry, had to say it). Tip: If you don’t know what coffee to try, ask the baristas to help you decide. They’re super knowledgeable of their product and also great conversationalists. There is a handful of small tables in the front and toward the back, but my personal favorite spot to sip on my cup-a-Joe, is on the couch. Give this place a try. Seriously, come check out this chill coffee shop and find out for yourself. You’re treated like family here and that’s what it’s all about.

Sweet Indulgences By Tonja – Menu with Prices – 809 Wysong Ct, Virginia Beach

Wonderful cakes, outstanding service! I live in New England and contacted Tonja after finding her online, looking at her cakes and noticing she lived close to my parents, who were about to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Since I couldn’t be with them, I wanted to surprise them with something special. I reached out to Tonja, who promptly replied to me & we discussed what I was looking for. She readily agreed to deliver the cake to their home & made a suggestion on the type of cake they would enjoy. I Venmo’d her payment & agreed on a delivery date & time. I asked if she could send me a picture, so I could see her work. She did that, let me know when it was delivered & my parents were so surprised & thrilled. They said the banana walnut cake she made, topped with fresh strawberries was absolutely delicious – & so pretty. Worked perfectly! I would highly recommend Tonja & hope to use her again – THANK YOU! ?

DreiBerge Coffee – Menu with Prices – 111 E Grand Ave Suite 109, Des Moines

I just got back from having coffee here with some friends! I had heard how good it was so I couldn’t help but have some expectations… First off, it has a somewhat similar vibe to Horizon Line, in that it is very minimalistic in style, which I like. Concrete floors, natural light, nothing much on the walls, etc. The major difference though is the cozy that this place has over Horizon. If these places were iPhoto filters, Horizon would be Dramatic Cool, and DreiBerge would be Vivid Warm. Go ahead, look at your phone now, I know you want to. Coffee is of a similar high quality, which is what really matters. However, DreiBerge is really competitive with price. Only $4 for a cup of their house with an added shot of espresso. Totally reasonable, and this coffee was GOOD. They’ve also got kombucha and nitro on tap for only $4. My friend also said that their scone was one of the best ever, and that it was more like a shortbread. For those of us who think scones are flavorless dust wedges (hello, that’s me), DreiBerge is worth a try. The kiddie play area is such a nice addition, too. There were three littles in our group and all the blocks, plastic food and puzzles kept them busy. To me, this says that DreiBerge knows their clientele, and isn’t trying to put anyone off by being too cool. Kids ARE cool, and who needs a coffee and chill more than parents?! No one, that’s who. Good job, DreiBerge. I’ll be back all semester to study at your beautiful live edge tabletops.

Cedar Coffee – Menu with Prices – 701 N Monroe St, Spokane

Best coffee in Spokane. Cedar was previously Couer Coffee in location. The new owner was a 1 to 2 times a day regular at Couer. He’s from the Ukraine where he still has a coffee shop – that he checks the web cam of regularly. The cafe in the Ukraine is very popular because they basically smuggle in quality coffee that no one else has, and make the effort to make it right. Well, that kind of care about quality persists with Cedar. Everyone that works at Cedar makes the best espresso they can, and if the pulls are not exactly what they want, they remake it. They talk about the flavors, and develop their own syrups. The owner also personally tries every roast, and likes to develop blends. The coffee is from Roast House, which sounds like a generic name but is perhaps the most meticulous roaster in the area. The old roaster from Couer (when they could roast) moved on to work at Roast House and informed me he has learned a lot about what it takes to run a consistent higher scale roasting company. Currently he baristas one or two days a week. *Mini update, the Hibiscus spiced tea is boss So maybe you are asking, where did the other star go? It isn’t about the coffee, service, or parking. For me there is a tension between aesthetics and intention. It looks a bit more like a more common coffee shop that is a mini clone for Starbucks. But I would still like to see them participate in the Art Walk, and change Art every month like so many coffee shops that support art. *Update: I have heard good things about expanding on things that turn a place to get coffee into a beloved community business, coming up. I will be pleased to add another star. *Update 2: Things are picking up. Art changed, signage is greatly improved, among all sorts of things. The owner could not be more serious about making the best coffee, and coffee shop he can. *Update 3: The shop has improved food options, which is greatly appreciated. I like the small russian cookies a lot, they got great with a coffee, not too sweet, not too big. But if I am more hungry I really like the bread for toast. That bread is unlike all the other local breads I have had by far.

The Cozy Kitchen – Menu with Prices – 1554 A, Bardstown Rd, Louisville

Im really happy The Cozy Kitchen has opened. This is a mom and pop food stop, owned by a nice local couple who cooks everything from scratch. I heard they have been in the food industry for a while and seem to really know their stuff- it shines through in their food. The menu rotates and today I had the pot roast. This is a takeout only place but dont worry- they use environmentally-conscious carryout materials. I was in and out in less than 5 minutes but if you have larger orders they recommend you call ahead. For $9, the pot roast comes with 2 sides and a roll which paired with the carrots and mashed potatoes and gravy. It was delicious. Im glad to have a place where i can quickly grab some food that isnt just french fries and burgers. I feel like I just left someone’s mom’s house where she sent me home with a big plate of food. I can’t wait to go back. Next rotation they will have pot pies among other things.

Equator Coffee Co – Menu with Prices – 134 Grimes St # 3, Eugene

Have been buying Equator coffee since I discovered it at a coffee shop in Portland 8 years ago. Now that I live even further away, I always order their coffee on-line. Guatemala is our main favorite but their Espresso blend is great too, even though I typically favor a medium roast. And their decaf has great flavor for moments when the caffeine buzz gets too much. Always use an Aero Press and you should ask Greg about those… but my Italian coffee maker does well too. A great place and great people! Get yer beans here!
