We are in Brownsville on business and as such, ordering in to our hotel room at strange hours. We decided to use Door Dash and order delivery. This review is based on our experience with the food only and as delivered. Food is never quite as good when it has been sitting steaming in styrofoam. My review has been adjusted for delivery sadness that occurs. My husband and I both ordered the 2 enchilada, 2 taco plate, our kiddo, the enchilada kids’ meal. We also ordered gorditas…or, so I thought but received some sort of beef stew and maybe I’ve been to one too many Taco Bells in my time but, I feel like that was a mistake. Except it wasn’t. I should mention that the food is ridiculously cheap lol, which is why we ordered so much. The portions are huge but taste like sadness for the most part. All in all? Pretty bland and tasteless. The tacos lacked any seasoning at all. The enchiladas were fairly mediocre, beans meh, rice…well, can’t really screw up rice too badly no matter who you are. That stew that I don’t think was ours was deeeelicious. Straight review? A solid 2, a 3 to account for delivery food. I really wanted to see what the rage was about the place…sadly, we came away disappointed.

Cactus Modern Mexican & Cantina – Menu with Prices – 5500 S 56th St Ste 1, Lincoln

Well I see we were not the only customers that had a bad experience at Cactus. The best part of our meal was the chips and guacamole, but the salsa was flavorless and too spicy. I ordered the soft crab tacos and after the waitress took our orders to the kitchen she came back and said they were out of what I ordered. Are you kidding me?? Friday evening @ 5:30!! I told the waitress that I would need a few minute to figure out what I wanted, so she stood there over my shoulder telling me what she liked off of the menu. ( I wasnâ??t asking her opinion but whatever) I ordered the shrimp enchiladas and when they came out the enchiladas were the only thing on the plate with no side dishes and way over priced, not to mention so spicy I could barely taste it. My wife ordered the taco salad which the waitress said was delicious. The meat on the salad was cold with very little flavor, and the lettuce chunks were so huge that it made the salad very unpleasant to try to eat. My 10 year old is not a fan of Mexican food so she ordered the chicken tenders. The breading was greasy, bland, and it appears they used cornflakes to make the batter, and her fries were cold. My teenage son who is not pick at all and will eat just about anything could not even eat his food because it was way too spicy. He said he couldnâ??t even taste the enchilada after the first few bites. We sat there not being able, or not wanting to eat our food with most of it left on all of our plates, and our waitress came over to ask if we would like a box! Haha!

CasaMia Mexican Restaurant & Bar – Menu with Prices – 10930 Rolater Rd Ste 180, Frisco

Been a couple of times. 1st time was 4.5 star and the 2nd time maybe 2. White queso is stellar and not ridiculously priced. Grab some of that. Lost with poblanos and onion. It is my favorite queso in DFW right now. A+ First visit was 3 enchiladas. They were very good & sauces paired well. Mole sauce wasn’t available unless I wanted it on everything. Strange but ok. Second visit was “shrimp” tacos (Tacos Monterrey). If you remember the old Wendy’s commercials “Where’s the beef?” This was one of those moments. I couldn’t find the shrimp – it’s a taco so there isn’t that far to look. The “shrimp” was a thin line of ground/chopped up corn kernel sized pieces of (probably) shrimp. Maybe 1 shrimp per taco. Maybe they were out? Maybe this is normal? Maybe the cook has never had a real shrimp taco? I was with someone so didn’t want to send it back – in their defense they probably would have fixed it had I complained. But it should not have come out like that. Incredibly disappointing. Black beans, charro beans, and lentils are all great. Refried are good. Rice is ok. 2 bean choices are better. The menu is very . . . linear. Enchiladas, tacos, tamales, chimichanga, etc. Very few combinations. No mix and match. Best to go with someone else or a few and use a divide and conquer strategy to get some variety.

Abelardo’s Mexican Food – Menu with Prices – 1200 S Minnesota Ave, Sioux Falls

Went there Friday April 26th. When I arrived I asked the young gentleman what was good (I like to find out what the staff likes to help me decide). He said “Everything”. I ordered the two taco plate. A friend ordered the taco and enchilada plate with a shredded beef taco and cheese enchilada. When our food arrived it was interesting that the amount of beans and rice was different on each of our plates. They use a Styrofoam plate that has three sections. Since the rice was in one section, the beans in another, my friend definitely had more of each. I expected the taco to be one of three things: 1) a flour tortilla (ie softshell) 2) a hard yellow corn fried tortilla (hardshell) or 3) a white corn tortilla lightly grilled (street taco). What I received was a flour tortilla deep fried and dark brown (on the edge of burned). Same with my friend’s taco. When I picked up my taco, there was nearly an 1/8th of an inch of grease in the third section. As I held the taco, the grease literally dripped out! I thought about adding a enchilada to my order at first, but now I was glad I didn’t. Here is the take-away. My plate had less beans and rice than my friend. My ground beef tacos were greasy and had nearly burned deep fried flour tortillas with very little seasoning. My friend’s shredded beef taco meat was tender, but without flavor and his shell was also nearly burned. His enchilada had little flavor also. The salsa bar was nice, as as the other reviewer mentioned, the salsa is a little spicy. They had sliced carrots and pickled jalapeno peppers, as well as radishes and fresh lime. The menu looks like Giliberto’s, the salsa bar looks like Giliberto’s but the portion size and flavors are not there. We felt like they were trying to imitate a good thing, but fell short. We cleaned our plates there and went to Taco Johns. I had a super burrito and small Ole’s. He had a hardshell taco and small Ole’s. Kinda sad when you have to order a meal after you have just finished one….

Cousins Maine Lobster Raleigh – Menu with Prices – 411 W Morgan St, Raleigh

I was really looking forward to eating this tonight after seeing them on Shark Tank as well as the giant line their food truck has had at a few of the Raleigh food truck events. Between the 3 of my family members we ordered a Maine lobster roll, lobster tacos combo with tots, shrimp tacos, lobster bisque, 1 water and 1 lemonade. Total came to $55.48. The woman who took our order was friendly. This was really a mixed review of the food. I tasted all that was ordered to sample. The highlight was the lobster bisque. Very smooth consistency, great flavor and had a few pieces of chopped lobster mixed in. The lobster tacos were good as well, topped with fresh pico. The most lackluster item was unfortunately the one I personally ordered which was the cold lobster roll. The bun was nicely toasted with the perfect amount of butter to not be greasy. The lobster itself was cooked well, but really lacked seasoning. What surprised me most though was that it appeared to have no mayonnaise. The first few bites I took I didn’t taste any…then I realized it was globed on the bottom of the bun and the lobster placed on top. I hate to say it, but it was rather unappetizing (see pic). My suggestion would be for the lobster to be mixed with a seasoned mayonnaise mixture and also to throw on some traditional celery leaves. The slaw had potential, but really lacked seasoning as well. Lastly, the shrimp tacos, like the lobster ones, had great flavor. They were loaded, but with TINY shrimp. My husband agreed he would’ve rather had 5-6 medium/large shrimp to actually have something to bite in to, rather than several extra small shrimp.

Sol Azteca Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 328 Montgomery St, Jersey City

Wow! We were not expecting our delivery to be not only so fast but delicious. The carnitas tacos, chicken enchiladas, beef tostada’s, fluatas and side of steak….yes! Side of steak! Were all some of the best traditional Mexican food I’ve had since New Mexico. So glad we found this place. It’s our new go to Mexican restaurant. Try the carnitas (fried pork) tacos or the enchiladas. Don’t forget to get the side of steak!

Palapas Seafood Bar – Menu with Prices – 2100 Alamo Rd Suite S, Richardson

Food seemed fresh, but from the moment I walked in this place was a disappointment. I was excited to see a new patio place in this area. The staff was nice, but not very attentive. The place wasn’t busy, and they were still slow. The mariachi music was turned up way to loud. It took awhile to get ceviche. Pictures online looked good, but it was bland and nothing special. I then had the crab enchiladas with red sauce. I had crab shell in my enchilada, it tasted fishy, and somehow the flavor was not on point. The red sauce was very watery and left much to be desired. The rice was bland, and the mixed veggies tasted like the frozen ones I buy at Sams club. My husband had one of the taco variations and he had similar feelings about his experience. This might be a good happy hour with a group since it would be easy to get into. But we won’t be going back for dinner.

Cantina Taco – Menu with Prices – 117 S Main St, Rockford

We’ve been fans of their tacos getting them at the market as well as through Stewart Square Eatery for years and now we’re so excited that Cantina Taco finally has its very own restaurant! I have not had the chance to eat inside yet but I did order delivery to my work one afternoon and was not disappointed. Here’s what I ordered: 1. The fish tacos – I’m a seafood fan and I tend to lean towards fish tacos whenever I stop at a taco place but I think these may be my new go-to. I was extremely impressed with how well seasoned and perfectly crisp their fish batter was without overpowering the fish itself and their slightly sweet slaw offered a great balance in the taco. 2. Chorizo brunch taco – chorizo, egg, potato – nicely cooked and delicious! 3. Chips and queso – Whatever is in their queso is creamy and addicting. Be warned, you’re probably not going to want to share (though there’s more than enough to.) Overall, I was happy as always with their tacos and would definitely recommend it ?

La Carreta Mexican Cuisine & Cantina – Menu with Prices – 41653 Margarita Rd #104, Temecula

I’ve been coming to La Carreta for twenty years. This place is like home to me and my family with foods and flavors that are just nostalgic. Most of my visits have been to the Alpine location (where I grew up). I had been hearing rumors that one of the brothers was opening a location in Temecula and I had been checking yelp over the years to find its location. Well today was the day. Could lightning strike twice? The answer is yes! The food has remained unchanged. My usual is the taco enchilada combo and it was just as good as it ever has been. If I had a lack of manners I would have licked the plate clean. The taco was big, filled with flavorful beef, fresh lettuce and cheese. The enchilada was and still is the best I have ever had, anywhere, period! In fact I have been trying enchiladas all over San Diego and it’s surrounding areas and have yet to find a better tasting enchilada. Why? Because I can’t for the life of me get out of my head that La Carreta, the Mexican restaurant I grew up eating at has the best enchilada in Southern California. There has to be a better one out there right? We’ll if there is I haven’t found it yet. Other than that experience remains unchanged. The red salsa is one of the best if not the best chip salsas at any Mexican restaurant. Pro tip: try their green salsa as well. Its just as good. The restaurant is clean and the staff was attentive and polite. There are TV’s in the bar for Sunday football, we didn’t try any of the Margaritas or other drinks but there’s always next time. There is also brunch on Sunday if that’s your thing. Glad to have found La Carreta’s second location, we will be back again and again now that this is the closest location to us.

Mimi’s Restaurant Menu with Prices 1400 Ross St, Amarillo

I’ll say from the onset, I’m a gringo…but I love Mexican food a lot. Stumbled upon this place the other night and we were the only ones in the place. Ordering is a bit of a challenge as the menu is all in Spanish with no descriptions or prices. (I figured the prices were pretty cheap, which they were.) We wound up getting beef tacos (crispy shells not available), horchata (think of a long, oval tostada) and cheese enchiladas. My wife said the enchiladas were VERY good. The horchata was BIG and pretty tasty. The “steak” in the tacos was quite bland. There’s a huge selection of traditional Mexican drinks and several popular beers – Mexican and domestic. They don’t have guacamole or the typical “salsa”…just a very spicy green tomatillo dipping sauce. The staff was very nice and accommodating. They’ve been in business for 11 years, so they’re doing something right. There’s also an odd collection of Mexican gifts to be purchased. Overall, it was an interesting dining experience, but I’ll probably not go back. It’s just a bit to “authentic” for my tastes.

Taqueria La Familia – Menu with Prices – 2642 W 32nd Ave, Denver

This is the best dine in Mexican establishment I have eaten at in North Denver, period. (Admittedly there are some taco trucks on Federal with better tacos but I consider these different genres.) If you dine in, they serve you chips with housemade salsa and warm red chile. I highly recommend the warm red chile! I ordered the combination platter with a chile relleno, chicken enchilada, and steak street taco. It was served with a side of rice and beans and your choice of tortillas. I ordered it with corn tortillas, which were amazingly fresh and excellent to scoop bites of chile relleno. The street taco was top notch and the enchilada had great flavor. My husband ordered chicken gorditas and these were great as well. We were able to dine al fresco on the small sidewalk patio and it was a wonderful experience! I already can’t wait to return. Extensive vegetarian options on the menu as well, for those looking. Also pro tip: finish your meal with a $1 churro from the Rosales Panaderia two doors down.

The Roadhouse Boulder Depot – Menu with Prices – 2366 Junction Pl, Boulder

We were last here when my son visited CU Boulder in fall 2017. The food and service was so good. We were really looking forward to our meal. . . Service was awful. I made reservations with a note that my daughter would be using a wheelchair. Remembering that half the tables are high tops, I specifically asked for a low top table. Well good thing she felt well enough to leave her wheelchair in the car because they had no low top table set aside. . . It took 30 minutes to get our waitress to come back to our table to take our order. Queso with pretzel bites was cold and lumpy. Burger was bland, tasteless and tough. Wings were fatty. Short rib enchiladas were not made to menu description, were tasteless and lacked meat. (not kidding – there was about 8 bites of meat in three enchiladas.) And a filet ordered medium has to be sent back twice because it was absolutely raw. I had to butterfly it myself just to get them to cook it to medium. . . The worst? My daughter has a serious, but invisible disability. The bathroom is not accessible. Itâ??s down a flight of stairs. When we asked for straws for cups of iced tea that were about 8 inches tall, the waitress started lecturing us about environmental concerns. When I said some people actually have disabilities and need straws, she looked at me, rolled her eyes and said if we really needed straws we should have brought them with us. So yeah – my 15 year old with titanium holding her skull and neck together just got publicly shamed. . . This restaurant would be awesome like it used to be if it cared about the quality of its food and the comforts of its guests more – or at least as much as – the so called environmental impact of straws. And hint – you the restaurant owner can actually purchase paper or biodegradable straws.

Beach House – Caribbean Coffee & Tapas – Menu with Prices – 109 W 6th St, Lexington

Taco Week Review – Jamaican Jackfruit Jerk Taco – Caribbean flavors of spicy jerk seasoning, jackfruit, ginger, cilantro, lime, onions, peppers, tomatoes, scallions and pineapple-mango salsa topped with coconut. Two street tacos for $5. What a flavor packed taco! I had no idea you could marinate jackfruit to have it look and taste so much like meat. The jerk seasoning was spicy and salty and balanced well with the pineapple-mango salsa. The staff was friendly and gladly answered my questions about jackfruit, the coffee and tea selections, and Caribbean cuisine in general. I walked away satisfied and with more knowledge. The menu has meats (ex. goat) not found in main-stream restaurants. If you are at all interested in Caribbean cuisine – this is a must try!
