As you can tell from my rating, I wasn’t impressed. The new and renovated look seemed to lack the old location and old BBQ vibe. They added the word “Steakhouse” to their name, with that came a hole new look. When you first walk in, it doesn’t resemble anything like a BBQ place or really a “Steakhouse” for that matter. There are no windows except for where the bar use to be from the prior restuarant (Cactus Valley). The decor felt more like a banquet hall for a wedding reception. Nothing on the walls told you about the restaurant or about the food that was being served. We were seated and my boyfriend sat on a beverage tray. The lunch menu didn’t have a children’s menu and some of the items seemed pricey $14.95 for a Cobb salad and $7.95 for onion rings. The waiters were dressed nicely, even sporting a tie and his wireless earphones. He brought over a plastic bread basket with a few hard pieces of bread. We ordered our food after contemplating if we should stay or not. It took a little while for our food to arrive and once it did, we weren’t very pleased. We ordered the baby back rib and tri tip combo $18.95 The food was served on some nice white dishes, but our food seemed like it was out of place. I mean, it’s bbq food, with bbq you expect to get your fingers dirty, here the bbq sauce looked like it was an accessory instead of part of the meal. It wasn’t even 1/2 a slab of ribs, we got 4 ribs and 3 pieces of tri tip. The potato salad tasted like they made it with too much relish and usually placed will pile up the fries because they are inexpensive but not here. The tri tip sandwich looked like it was the stuck up cousin to a real bbq tri tip sandwich or wanted to be a tri tip sandwich when it grew up. By the way, we never got the side salad that was ordered with it. We weren’t given folks, we had to take them from another table, nor where we weren’t given napkins, we took them from another table. The food was so much better when it was Fred’s BBQ Factory, the small little place across the street. The ribs were dry and cold with a little slap of bbq sauce We should have stuck with our gut and left instead of paying for food that was below what it use to be. When leaving the restaurant, we almost hit a couple in the face with the door because again, there are no windows so we couldn’t see them on the other side. In my personal opinion, the new name and the decor are misleading. The lunch menu speaks bbq, the plastic bread basket says bbq but the dishes and decor, not so much. I think they are missing the mark with the upgrades.

Nectar Coffee and Wine Bistro Menu with Prices 106 Hume Ave, Alexandria

I ate here with my mom and son on a Friday afternoon. I was quite surprised by how crowded it was for a weekday! Logistics: there is a parking lot off to the side of the building. Order at the counter, get a number, food is brought out to your table. Breakfast (or at least waffles) are served all day. In fact, I saw a table tent advertising a daily special of a waffle + a mimosa or Bloody Mary for $15. If you are in a lunch mood there are a variety of sandwiches and salads. All sandwiches come with either chips (just a bagged variety) or a salad. There are also options for 1/2 salad and soup but no 1/2 salad and 1/2 sandwich. They should change that! On this topic, they should also change their hours. Only being open until 5pm has made it hard to get here which is why it took me so long to finally visit. I had their chicken salad at the taste of Del Ray so I recommended that my mom try that. She chose wheat bread and a salad. The portion was large and my mom loved it! She said it was one of the best chicken salad sandwiches she’s had! It had grapes, apples, cranberries, and celery from my memory. The bread was delicious too- seeded on the outside with a thick crust. I chose the fig and prosciutto sandwich. I should have chosen wheat but chose white bread. I loved the salty and sweet combination! We both agreed the dressing for the salads, which was basically just olive oil wasn’t great. We both had iced tea unsweetened which was given to us by the cashier. Not sure if there were free refills or not. The inside decor is cute and they have a patio albeit small as well. And they have high chairs! I enjoyed my lunch and would definitely return!

Verre Wine Bar Menu with Prices 2415 Wilson Blvd, Arlington

Decided to try Verre today for lunch and I’m so happy I did! It was my first time there and I really enjoyed it – and I didn’t even sample the wines, so I’m looking forward to going back. The interior is really nice with a ton of natural light, and their menu is great. They have what I think is an amazing lunch special – a full sandwich, a full side, and a coffee or tea for $9.95. Can you get that anywhere else in Clarendon? I don’t think so. I got the chicken and brie sandwich, and our server was very accommodating when I asked for it to be served without bread. I got the Greek salad as my side, and Swings coffee. The sandwich was delicious and was plated very nicely (forgot to take a picture) and the dijonnaise and fig jam on the side were a really nice complement. The Greek salad was nice – great greens, tasty tomatoes, peppers, onions, and great herbed feta with a tasty Greek dressing. My friend got a really hearty-looking sandwich and the Greek salad side. We both felt like this was a great value for a nice lunch! They had lots of other good options, too, so I highly recommend!

Nick’s on Broadway – Menu with Prices – 287 Broadway, Winnipeg

Value wise, I think Nick’s on Broadway gives you the best bang for your buck relative to the two other sandwich shops in the city (King + Bannatyne and Sherbrook Street Deli). For $8 you can get a hot pastrami sandwich served with hot mustard and city bread rye with a pickle and coleslaw. My fave is their red star reuben ($11) pastrami, russian dressing, sauerkraut, swiss cheese on city bread rye; this sandwich is done panini style so a little different from the classic reuben but very good. They have lots of side/full orders of salads and soups for $2.5/$4. The house salad – mixed greens, apple, feta and cheese – even a side order felt fairly generous for the price. This was a great light salad to balance off the heavier meat sandwich. The salt potatoes – baby potatoes, kosher salt, garlic butter and parmesan was served whole and probably would have tasted better if the baby potatoes were cut up more so the garlic butter and parmesan can coat more of the potato. Nice breakfast/lunch place on the corner of smith and broadway in a newly renovated location. The space is very angular and doesn’t offer a ton of seating; it’s not the most comfortable space but it’s really a place for a quick breakfast/lunch. You order and pay first and then pick up your order so no table service. Everything is served in disposable boxes so it has a bit of a food court feel. It’s open Mon-Sat 8:00AM-3:30PM.

Mandys Cafe Menu with Prices 4725 Panama Ln Ste D, Bakersfield

I really don’t know what to say about this place. We decided to try it for lunch. The service was extremely slow but it wasn’t the fault of the servers. The kitchen was backed up because of an amount of customers that I assume was unusual for them to handle. I watched as the cook took one ticket at a time off the spindle. Very generous portions and very fresh food but so slow that parts of the dish served died before it got to the table. I ordered the club sandwich which should be a very simple thing to put out. Donna ordered a Cobb salad which again should be simple. Even though it was more than 40 minutes before we got our food. We noted the servers standing at the window waiting for food with nothing else to do. The kitchen appeared to be completely overwhelmed. A table of 10 was served one person at a time. Their breakfast food looked delicious but because of the slowness they were not able to enjoy their meal together until I’m sure some of the food was cold. When I got my club sandwich it was served with fries but they were lukewarm and limp. The contents of the sandwich turkey and bacon were both very fresh and tasty. Donna’s Cobb salad was also very generous and included a whole avocado. We may try it again but for breakfast because I doubt we will be back for lunch.

American Deli Menu with Prices 1055 Gaines School Rd #102, Athens

Well I ordered a club sandwich from this place . I ordered it through bulldog delivery (who I’m not reviewing yet). The sandwich was worse than mediocre! I’ve had better brown bag sandwiches out of food trucks. First a club sandwich has three pieces of bread (and adult bread not the bread you’d find in a child’s lunch box) ! The sandwich had sparse ham and one piece of bacon, also totally unevenly distributed veggies. The only thing that was plentiful was the over compensated mayo (which would have been enough for a full size club Sandwich !) . It’s good they provided an over abundance of napkins so I could wipe off the half jar of mayo. The bread was not lined up so when they cut it in half (most clubs are cut in quarters) , one side had a piece of crust practically , so I was holding the sandwich makings with my hand (enter the plentaful napkins)!! The other side was almost a whole piece of bread. It was quite a disappointment all around. The haphazardly made sandwich that was lacking any semblance of attention to detail and overflowing with forgettable mediocrity!

Saati Deli & Catering Menu with Prices 518 Broadway, Albany

Saati is an office lunch favorite, and for good reason. There’s plenty menu variety and the options downtown are pretty sparse. I always enjoy the Greek salad ($9.59), and enjoy that it comes with stuffed grape leaves. They’re generous with the feta, but there is no protein and the salad doesn’t come with a side, so it’s a little spendy. Occasionally, the field greens aren’t that fresh, and I’ve had to frustratingly pick out the wilted greens. I enjoy the hummus bowls, which are served with a good portion of warmed pita and your choice of plain, falafel, chicken/onion, and grilled veggie ($7.99-$9.99, depending on toppings). I’d love an option to have it come with a side of raw veggies. When I order with chicken, there’s enough for 2 meals. The only big flop I’ve had is the hummus and chargrilled vegetable sandwich ($8.69). It is just that — hummus and veggies on ciabatta. Yet the veggies were served ice cold, which was extremely unpleasant. The grilled cheese is tasty, but one of the menu items that is painfully expensive for what it is: basic sandwich bread and cheese for $7.99. It does come with a pickle slice and small side of mayo-based sides (Mac salad, coleslaw, potato salad), and the cashiers are always kind enough to allow my mayo-loathing self to sub in chips as a side. Although Saati will definitely run you a couple of bucks more than other area sandwich shops, they’re a popular and nice option that has something for almost everyone. It does get busy, but don’t let the lunch line scare you — they move pretty quickly, just be sure you’re listening for your number to be called.

Spitale’s Deli & Catering – Menu with Prices – 3309 Division Street, Metairie

I think that I found my new favorite lunch spot in Metairie! I love that they have lunch specials everyday. We went on a Monday and had the red beans with rice lunch special. It was a nice large serving. The smoked sausage was delicious! It made the dish. It came with two pieces of garlic bread and a salad. The bread was tasty and the salad was good. I opted for their house dressing. It was very yummy. I ordered an ice tea. They gave me a nifty plastic to go cup with their logo. I totally dug that. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The decor was fun. Very New Orleans! The place was clean. The TVs were much appreciated. I will be back!

Roman’s Deli & Catering Menu with Prices 75 Haywood St, Asheville

Dropped by Roman’s for lunch today for a quick sandwich with the kid and wife. If you’re a lover of all things deli – house made meats, unique sandwiches, pastrami, fresh breads, salads, soups – look further. This place is very much a flat ‘okay’ but nothing to write home about. Yes, they sell sandwiches. They are okay. Don’t expect Katz’s here. I ordered the Italian sandwich – a full sandwich on sandwich bread (che cosa?) rather than a hoagie or Italian roll. It came blasphemously spread with mayo, but I’m cool with that since I always taint my Italian subs with the sweet nectar of Holland. It was served Panini style with ham, hot capicola, hard salami, sharp provolone, tomato, red onion, pepperoni, but confusingly with lettuce in a hot panini – ok, whatever. I think there was one slice of each meat. Ok, par. Not your typical Italian sub which would have been served cold on a roll, but on the whole it was enjoyable, though small. All full sandwiches are served with a pickle (they forgot mine) and a side – I chose fruit salad. The fruit salad was a mix of strawberries, pineapple and orange slices – quite fresh and nice. I also ordered a fresh unsweetened ice tea (get behind me Diabetes!). For our little man, we got a grilled cheese and side of fruit salad – he enjoyed it. It was all very much fine but at a whopping $12 for one sandwich (rent aint cheap on Haywood St), I think I’ll pass on another round. This place is just fine, not amazing and neither worth avoiding nor seeking out. There are better options within a rocks throw of this place and as deli’s go, it was just missing some glaringly obvious menu items like pastrami or Reuben or corned beef. No soups. No bread options. I dunno, is this a deli? I may give their extensive burger a shot (spoiler alert: delis don’t actually server burgers, but whatever). They looked pretty good.

Dreamland BBQ Huntsville – Menu with Prices – 3855 University Dr NW, Huntsville

My friend suggested Dreamland BBQ for lunch so we went to check it out. Service was extremely fast on this wednesday. I got a chicken bbq sandwich and my friend got the combo plate where he chose ribs and 2 sides. They also offered us bread and sauce as a free appetizer… I didn’t know that was a thing! My sandwich came out and the portion is massive. It tasted alright, but I wish we had the chance to choose our own bbq sauce. I’m not really sure I liked my bbq sauce on this chicken… it didn’t blow me away with any flavors. My friend also asked them for spicy bbq and apparently we already had it at the table (the sauce for the bread appetizer). It wasn’t that hot… overall, nice atmosphere and decent lunch spot for bbq. The total came out to be only about $25! I might return, might not. Dreamland is decent but nothing special.

Teuta Qebaptore – Menu with Prices – 603 E 186th St, The Bronx

After a friend recommended this place to me, I decided to check it out. Teuta Qebaptore is an Albanian restaurant on E 186th Street around the corner from Arthur Avenue. I believe it opened not too long ago and it is very clean. There are neither physical nor takeout menus except a sign on the wall because the menu is VERY simple. The restaurant specializes in various meat dishes, such as chevapi, qofte, and kebab. Because there was no description what each of them were, we ordered the combo for $10 which pretty much carried everything. The combo came with a mixed salad containing some cabbage, purple onions, feta cheese, and tomatoes. According to the waitress there’s no french fries or bread as one would expect. But hey, that’s healthy, I guess. On the table was a large bowl of bread to be shared. The salad’s feta was really good, and had a remarkable flavor to it. The bread I believe is sourced from local bakeries. You can actually see the same big round loaves hanging out in the storefronts of said bakeries. The meat dish came afterwards, almost when we finished the salad. At least from my experience, there’s no water served and you have to purchase drinks aside. I went with the ayran, a salty yogurt drink, that went down really well with the meat ($3). Cash only.

Lewis Barbecue – Menu with Prices – 464 N Nassau St, Charleston

Will start this off by saying this is the best bbq we’ve ever had. (Minus from our smoker). We came in on a Thursday afternoon for a late lunch. The atmosphere is awesome. The entrance starts with the bar and then you walk through some doors to more of a restaurant style seating. Plenty of seating inside and it. The outside seating was actually very pretty with a big oak. Wasn’t crowded at all when we arrived but as soon as we grabbed a menu a huge lined formed. We grabbed a beer and my husband ordered. As there were 4 of us he ordered 2 racks of ribs with some corn bread pudding and Mac n cheese. I could taste the smoke from the ribs before I even got it to my mouth. I am not normally a fan of spare ribs, I prefer baby back, but these were incredible. Had plenty of tender, almost fall of the bone, meat on them. There was a spicy but not too spicy rub on them with some sauce. We ended up taking maybe 7 ribs home but that just means another awesome lunch. The corn bread was packed with the normal flavor of corn bread with some jalapeños and corn kernels in it. Very moist. I make a great smoked Mac so I’ve never found one in a bbq joint that I like until we came here! It’s the perfect texture of being able to eat it with a fork and it not fall. They used a white cheese with had a good bold flavor. There was also a little bit of crunch to the cheese. This place has been on my list but we never go in to Charleston so we waited and I’m sad we didn’t go sooner! Will definitely be back to try the brisket!

Tiger Bay Cafe Menu with Prices 373 Haywood Rd, Asheville

We stopped by Tiger Bay for a quick bite before going for a hike up in the hills. You’ll need to walk through the coffee shop that it shares the space with to reach the cafe, which is a small nook in the back left of the building. It’s got a very casual vibe, with a lot of art on the walls and a handful of chairs and booths to sit at. Ordering is pretty straightforward, although the folks manning the register seem to disappear for periods of time. With traffic relatively light, it’s not a big deal, but it did seem to be a very relaxed approach to running things. Even though we were one of two parties in the restaurant at the time, we still had to wait about 10 minutes or so to get our food, which felt a bit on the longer side given that we stuck with order a couple of sandwiches. That said, the food is pretty good, and it’s simple – nothing super-pretentious about it, but it’s a solid meal without being overly heavy. I probably liked my wife’s BCT (C for cheese), which was basically a grilled panini that had a very nice mixture of savory and sweet flavors (which seemed to hint at a maple glaze somewhere in the mix). Even though there’s not a lot of meat in the sandwich, it’s still pretty hearty, and the crisp on the panini bread is just right. My pulled pork sandwich was a bit different, as there was less BBQ sauce on it and more peppers and onions, which gave it a bit of a spicy kick that stuck out against the pork. The sauce was quite good, but the small quantity actually put on the sandwich meant it was basically lost, and the rest of the sandwich did seem a bit dried out – the pork was definitely on the drier side, as was the bun it was served on. Both sandwiches came with standard-issued potato chips on the side. The food was solid overall, and coming from NYC, the prices certainly make for very good value. I would probably come back and try out some of the other items, but relative to the high ratings I saw on here, I was a tad underwhelmed. Perhaps we didn’t get the right dishes, or the food wasn’t quite spot-on, but this was a very solid 3.5-star experience that I’d round down, as my wife’s very good panini was offset by a bit of a subpar experience on my order. Still, if you’re looking for a casual spot to grab a bite, Tiger Bay is a solid choice.
