This has been a spot in Black Rock for sometime, but new ownership catches one’s attention, especially when you know them and they are such good folks. So, yeah, I’m not exactly impartial. Now known as The Phoenix at 269, this is one of those spots you can’t help but need in your dining sphere even if you didn’t know you needed it. Sometimes, you just need a well-cared for drink at the bar, perhaps a lovingly poured guinness, a well-cultivated burger, perhaps a chicken dish, a milanese perhaps and perhaps, space. This is a humble place, tastefully decorated, and a nice patio out back, off street parking and a staff committed to just doing it right. All the food I mentioned is just the tip of the iceburg, go forth, spend your hard earned dollars with folks who want to feed you well and who watch what they are serving unto you with care. Go, eat, drink and be merry

Bishop’s Gate Tavern – Menu with Prices – 1503 State St, New Haven

Ok, have you checked out the BEST bar in town? Yes, this is the go to place for a night out with some friends, or just a cool sports bar to watch the game! They have a wide selection of drinks and will make just about anything! Porky and their staff are extremely nice. When you walk in, all the locals are there and it’s a really nice, cozy, environment. They have a really nice closed off area in the back where you can host private events! Just ask Porky for reservation details! Very soon, they will also be serving food so I can’t wait til then. There’s parking on the street and it’s so easy to find on the Main Street. Make sure to check this place out!

Saint Arnold Brewing Company – Menu with Prices – 2000 Lyons Ave, Houston

Outdoor patio space – absolutely love it! Super chill. Clean, open, lively. Servers come to hour table. There is a roof over the majority of it. Some seating in the main outdoor area and to the side is uncovered. Bocci ball courts on the side. Don’t be in a rush – just come here and relax for several hours! Indoor space (that is connected to the patio) – feels like a German beer hall / cathedral inside! Cozy. Unique alcoves along both sides that are decorated with art work – each one different to the next Drinks – wide selection of craft brews to suit any taste palate! My personal fav: Raspberry AF ($6/pint). You can get a flight of 5 beers for $9. There are also Saint Arnold’s pint glasses for purchase: glass+beer for $10. If you don’t drink beer, there are a few Saintsbury vineyard wine options ($12-15/glass, a wee bit pricey, but you’re really here for the beer, right?!) Food – I always get the chicken salad sandwich – huge yummy portion size for only $12 and comes with a side of fries! Other food items that we had at our table: crawfish roll with a side of the elote en vaso (omg get this Mexican corn as a side, or it even comes as an entree!), bishop burger (heard was just “ok”) with a side of mac-n-cheese (creamy yum), wings (two kinds: jerk and fire emoji), baby back ribs. Occasionally there are some changes / additions to the menu! Service – never had an issue! Friendly down to earth staff. Parking: plenty between the multiple lots and street parking. Other: fun art cars are always on display outside. Inside there is Saint Arnold’s merch for sale (including gift cards)! Ask your server about hopping on one of the *free* brewery tours (1pm, 3pm, 5pm, 7pm)!

Archetype Coffee Little Bohemia – Menu with Prices – 1419 S 13th St Suite 101, Omaha

OK WHOA. I’ve been a fan of the Archetype Blackstone for a number of years, and there are so many little things I appreciated; like them being dog friendly and having wifi and a little patio…etc. but the little Bohemia location really is amazing inside and blows Blackstone out of the water! Not only is is full of light (windows on 3 sides of the building vs only 1 in Blackstone), but it’s spacious and you can work or chat without overpowering the person next you. I love a good cozy coffee shop- but the parking in Blackstone is becoming annoying and it sucks when I meet someone to work and there isn’t a table for us. Little Bohemia has gorgeous natural light, tons of space, the same menu, light pastries and snacks, and really really pretty architecture. Since this street is not overly populated, there is lots of street parking and they also have their own lot. The patio here is also in the works and looks amazing (big!). My only ask is this- I like coffee, but sometimes dont want coffee/macha/chai aka caffeine. It would be nice for them to have something else available to drink (kombucha?, italian soda, tea juice? hot chocolate/cider in the winter months?) Maybe they’ll add something like this to the menu soon. Until then, still good. Visit them soon!

Meraki Coffee & Co. – Menu with Prices – 1203 Willamette St Suite 120, Eugene

1) They serve Equiano Coffee! 2) Amazing smoked salmon lox dish with a beautiful spread. Yes, they have avocado toast, too! 3) It’s a great space to work on your laptop, study, or attend professional meetings. 4) Friendly staff. Ambiance is simple, clean, white motif with some green natural touches. Very high ceilings. Music is pleasant, more of a chill vibe – I guess it depends on who’s working that day! ? A lot of professionals and serious students come here, so you know it’s not going to be chaotic and loud. Bathrooms are in a secured part of the building that is shared with other businesses. So, you’ll have to ask someone to watch your stuff (which is super easy) if you have to tinkle in the middle of a work project. They don’t have their own parking lot, so keep that in mind, but I’ve never had a problem parking on the street on the same block.

Sessions Music Hall – Menu with Prices – 44 W 7th Ave, Eugene

Anytime I would say, “I haven’t been to the Hi-Fi yet,” people would look at me like I was crazy. Well I finally went for a show and got the full experience. The show was in the larger room with it’s own bar and while the bar area was fun it kind of sucked that it was behind the stage. The people spending the most money can’t even take their drinks to watch the show. The sound was great and there’s not a bad view from the dance floor. The staff were friendly, especially the bouncer at the door. I was super bummed out to find that the outdoor area with the fire and tables was only for the other side of the venue. We were paying a lot for our tickets and were only able to stand in the parking lot. I don’t understand why there isn’t a nice outdoor area for the other side of the venue or some way to share the outdoor space with someone who lets you back in to your correct show. Besides that, it was a fun night and food trucks park here for lunch and during shows. If you can’t find street parking there is a large parking structure across the street.

The Fifth: Fireside Patio and Bar – Menu with Prices – 2701 Custer Pkwy Ste 700, Richardson

Guess Ill have to wait for Sixth. I live in the neighborhood and really want to have our local places make it. This place is on its fifth reincarnation and unfortunately it continues to dissapoint. On our visit, we tried the chicken and the shrimp and grits. The chicken was fine if unremarkable and the grits were just sad. They were more formed than smooth (think jello mold) and the 6 ish small shrimp were overcooked and cold. Felt like they were trying too hard to make it fancy but the overall dish was just not good. It is unfortunate that a place that is so close to me and have a lovely patio in five tries still can’t deliver on a go to place to get a decent meal in a good atmosphere. Staff were ok but didn’t check in or I would have ordered a second drink. They asked if we had a reservation and seemed concerned that we didn’t, but seated us right away. Not sure why there were concerned. Rework of the interior uses the space better but it still only feels welcoming on the patio. I will likely give them one more try because I am a sucker and the hope that we could finally get a good place nearby springs eternal but I suspect by the time I go again, it will have taken on a different name. Maybe then I will have my go to place…maybe.

Ambitious Ales – Menu with Prices – 4019 Atlantic Ave, Long Beach

Really enjoyed Ambitious Ales! Not only do they have a great selection of beers, they’re reasonably priced, too! The patio is communal and great for larger gatherings. It is first-come, first-serve, so if you know you’re going to need a lot of tables, it’s advised to show up early and to bring a few people to help squat until the rest of your pals get there. It’s also dog friendly, so if you have a well behaved pooch, they’re more than welcome – in fact, the staff was great about bringing fresh water bowls throughout the afternoon! My fave of the brews was the Mango. Not only was it super refreshing on the warm day we were there, it wasn’t overly sweet, but easy to chug. Dangerous in a good way. The brewery is great about giving all the beers straightforward tasting profiles, making the menu super easy to navigate. The staff are super friendly at making suggestions and letting you taste a few before committing as well. Parking is rough since most of the street parking is limited to two hours, just make sure to watch the signs before leaving your vehicle. They don’t serve food, but you can get Pow Wow pizza next door or some German bites from Rasselbock across the street!

The Taj Of India Menu with Prices 502-7 Furys Ferry Rd, Augusta

Wanted to get some Indian food and this restaurant had a lot of really good reviews. That being said, I wasn’t disappointed. It doesn’t look that big on the outside but was fairly spacious when you get inside. Clean and tastefully decorated with good furnishings and settings. The staff were all very pleasant, courteous, and friendly. I went on a Saturday about an hour after they opened for dinner. Seating was open and service was very prompt while keeping up with a dozen or so other customers. I ordered Butter Chicken, Garlic Naan, a Coke, and a Chai Tea. For dessert, I had Gulab Jamun. The Butter Chicken was very smooth, had good seasoning, and wasn’t acidic at all. The Garlic Naan was nice and crispy on the bottom without being burnt, while still being soft and fluffy on top. The garlic was evenly spread and wasn’t overpowering. The Chai Tea had a really good flavor. The Galub Jamun was fresh and soft with the right amount of sweetness. Altogether a very nice place to eat for dinner!

William & Company – Menu with Prices – 616 N Person St #1214, Raleigh

I can’t believe I haven’t written a review of WilCo yet, it’s by far one of my favorite cocktail bars in Raleigh!!! Located on North Person Street in downtown Raleigh, this cozy nook is the perfect spot for a post-dinner cocktail or three. Street parking can be challenging on weekends but you should Uber/Lyft here anyway! There are a few outdoor seats & the inside is small with 3 couch lounging areas & a bar that seats 10ish. I love how dimly lit & tastefully decorated it is! The bartenders are absolute rockstars, and so is the owner, Lily! She & Jillian rock that place. My favorite cocktail is a coffee old fashioned & they figured out how to make it just perfectly. In fact, they can whip up almost anything you want! They make their own fresh juices, mixes & such. They’ve got 3 beers on tap, fernet on tap, & a plethora of boozes. And, they always have fresh hot tamales when you need a little nite to eat ? They even have a house DJ on Friday & Saturday nights!! All in all, you should bump William & Company to the top of your list! It’s a female-owned bar where you’ll be sure to have a good time… and your night will only be even more interesting after you leave!

Boun’s Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 4-208 Marion St, Winnipeg

The menu here is a bit confusing as this restaurant calls itself an “Asian” restaurant. So which country in Asia? Well, I’d say foremost it’s Laotian but Laos and Thailand share similar cuisine, so there is definitely the flavours and the heat of Thai food here. Then there’s a few Vietnamese dishes and then the random Chinese dishes. Prices are very moderate and fair as most starters are $3-9 and most shareable entrees are $10-$13. I tried 3 curry dishes and they were all delicious! Definitely come here and order a bunch of dishes and share family style as they will bring you a big bowl of rice. You can order dishes here ranging from a heat quotient from 1-10. I have a high tolerance to spicy foods and eat spicy foods often so a “7” is perfect for a good hit of heat as I could still taste the food and not down water like crazy. I would order an 8 or 9 next time to see what that’s like but I think 3 would be good for most palates if you don’t eat spicy food that often and don’t bother adding any heat if you can’t eat spicy at all. The “panang curry” ($10.95) with chicken has coconut milk curry with green peas and lime leaf had a great creamy texture but not a lot of complexity in the curry. Although I really enjoyed this dish, I preferred the other two curries more. The “basa curry” ($11.95) was recommended by the server and with good reason – it was so yummy! You can select red, green or yellow curry and I opted for yellow curry with a fillet of basa (a white fish) with vegetables. Amazing sauce – definitely try this one! The matsaman “potato curry” ($10.95) can be made with chicken, beef, pork or shrimp and is cooked in coconut milk curry with potatoes, nuts and basil. The beef in this dish was tender and flavourful – I really liked the crunch of the peanuts in this dish too. The restaurant is located near Lovey’s in the strip mall on Marion Street – there’s very limited parking here so you might have to park on the street but there’s plenty of free 1-2 hour parking on the street. The interior space here is bright, modestly decorated and clean. Food was prepared fairly fast and the service was very friendly and warm. A lovely place for lunch or dinner (plus some to take home if you order a few dishes to share).

Bevel Craft Brewing Menu with Prices 911 SE Armour Rd Suite B, Bend

Bevel – a disc golf themed operation – promises hop forward beers in a casual tasting room in the 9th Street Village, which means you get easy access to the food trucks that inhabit the locale. – Medium-sized bar where you can watch disc golf on the TV. – Several tables scattered about. The bar area is fairly open, not at all crowded. And you can sit outside. – A very casual vibe, no loud music, not much in the way of distractions. If you’ve been to Bridge 99 off Empire, Bevel is kind of like that in terms of ambiance. Beer: – Prices are in line with the rest of Bend. $5.50/pint. – 1st Run: an easy-drinking IPA that isn’t super hoppy. – 2nd Run: an easy-drinking IPA with quite a bit more hoppiness. – Tree Love: a red ale that also drinks well (there’s a theme here) and has a bit of hoppiness. – Hop Tour Series Mosaic: my favorite of the IPA/IRA’s. Quite hoppy. – Black Ace Cascadian dark ale looks very nice and drinks like a black IPA. It’s a bit too high in ABV for me to have regularly (7.6%). – Larry-s Pale: I wasn’t expecting much from a pale but was pleasantly surprised. Almost every craft brewer these days provides IBU numbers for their beers (International Bittering Units), but not here. That’s something I think they should change – some folks have a lower tolerance to hops and some folks (me) just like knowing the numbers. Parking can be a challenge during busy times. You may have to find street parking and even that might be scarce. Recommended.

Raw Eatery and Market – Menu with Prices – 1145 Kensington Crescent NW #2, Calgary

Located in Kensington, the place is a little difficult to spot at first. But after your first visit, you won’t forget! Parking is difficult around here but is just the typical Kensington/downtown parking situation. Street parking available at a fee during the week but free after 6pm and on Sundays! Once you go down the stairs and enter the cafe, the feel for the space is very homey; I personally like the different tables and chairs throughout the space. The cute little table and chairs on the patio were a nice touch too. Menus are available at the front but everyone working here is so approachable and friendly; they can easily make a recommendation for you or answer any questions you may have about the ingredients list, etc. I’ve tried a handful of dishes here including the tacos, the zucchini thai, the pesto salad, the kale salad, the sourdough… EVERYTHING IS DELICIOUS. I love that this place exists cause honestly, Calgary doesn’t have enough options for vegan restaurants/cafes. They also have desserts that seem to change on the regular! On top of all their amazing food, they carry products from other local companies like kombucha and chocolates.. ? If you need help picking a menu item, FOR SURE pick the tacos – they are my personal fav, and the girl told me that they are also the most popular dish there. I don’t think you could go wrong with any of the menu items though, and I can’t wait to go back to try more and to one day have tried the entire menu…. Overall I LOVE THIS PLACE. Delicious, healthy, affordable and VEGAN! Still a good place to eat even if you’re not vegan, so please check this place out if you’re on the fence and you won’t regret it!
