Mixed emotions based on recent visit. Good Cider. Bad Neighbor Behavior. Back in the day when Atlas Cider first launched in Bend I was living in Bend and a big fan of the product. That Atlas was renamed Avid a year ago (to avoid name infringement problems with Atlas Brewery on the East Coast that had name filed several days before Atlas Cider did) and that I moved out of Bend (five years ago) reduced my affection for Avid’s cider not one bit. In particular I am smitten with their Apricot Cider which is tied with Boise based Meriwhether Cidery’s Pineapple Jalapeno as my all time fav. But as a visitor to Bend now who was staying at the Springhill across the street last weekend when Avid was having one year anniversary of name change and new location celebration, I think they were a rude neighbor for others with how loud they had the band blasting at night for bass that “BOOM BOOM BOOMED” into the hotel rooms and local neighborhoods. As aside, I felt sorry for the desk clerks who were fielding guest complaints. I wanted to provide fellow guests with the home number for the city manager and the mayor so they could call him and her, respectively, to let them experience the noise level first hand in real time. Given we lived in Bend for 17 years, we noted some venues ignored Bend’s maybe too liberal noise ordinances and city government ignored enforcement so we ignored the Avid sponsored band “BOOMS” given we knew the hotel staff had nothing to do with the problem or ability to fix it. Since we are fans of Avid’s product, on Saturday afternoon we wandered over to enjoy a glass of that yummy Apricot Cider on tap. We ran into friends who still live in Bend and they and others were saying that the noise from the Avid event was so over the top on Friday – and these locals weren’t happy about that – that there had been promises to tone it down on Saturday. But, I am sad to say Saturday night was worse. In fact, the discussion spilled over to people at tables at the Immersion Brewing outside dining next door and the poor Immersion server said “don’t blame us, it’s not our party”. Will I still enjoy Avid’s cider? Sure. Do I feel differently about the business for this kind of over the top noise / bad neighbor behavior? Yep. But it seems a trend in Bend that as the city has become party-central for the nearly 4 million visitors it has every year, sometimes to the detriment of the 95,000 people who live there, to allow bad behavior to proliferate unchecked. Some tourist behavior is sometimes so rude in the way of “YOOOOO DUUUUDDDE” inebriate that the Visitor Bureau is even sponsoring some kind of good manners giveaway to try to provide incentive for people to behave thoughtfully when in town. All good to have fun. But in this case, I think Avid set a bad example for their anniversary celebration. End of grown-up ruminations.

Johnny’s Saloon & Pizzeria – Menu with Prices – 17428 Beach Blvd, Huntington Beach

This is was the 2nd time I was in there. Last time, I was asked for ID which is ok although I am waaaay over 21. It was ok. We decided to try it again with our neighbors. There was 4 of us and when we sat down, the bartender asked us for ID. My neighbor did not have ID with her. The bartender said he would not serve us without ID. It was the owners rules. Now, I understand the rules. You have to do what you have to do. HOWEVER, our ages ranged from 53 to 73 years old. Really?!!!! Also, we also understand the rules but do they have to be so rude about it?! Luckily we lived close by and she went home and got her ID. The only reason we went there was because I told them it was ok for a local bar and close to home. But we got rude service with ok drinks but with an attitude. Even when we asked for the bill, the guy just walked by and said he would get to us. It wasn’t all that busy yet – 5pm on a Saturday – really? I guess we have to find a new local place. My neighbor said Shooters said they were nicer. I understand asking for ID if that is the rules but you don’t have to be rude and HELLLOOOOO – WE WERE WAY OVER 50 YEARS OLD.. . Not coming back and definitely not recommending to any of our friends.

Sugar Shack – Menu with Prices – 215 N Clippert St, Lansing

*****OWNER VERY RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL****** I only been in this bakery 3 times, the first time my daughter and I went in on a Saturday, and there was a very nice young girl, and the next time I went in there was a guy working there, upon entering in this bakery he didn’t greet me, he snapped very rudely, so being professional I assumed he wasn’t having a good morning, because the bakery just had opened, so I looked passed his behavior, and left on my way, the next time i called in to place a order, and there was this guy again being rude and unprofessional over the phone once again, so I drove in to pick it up my order, and there was a nice elderly lady in the front, and I began to address some things with her, and she said wait let me get the owner, and I looked up and there was the guy that have been so very rude to me, frowning and being very ugly, but it bothers me not, because I have never did anything to this guy, so i can be at peace, it really made me sad to know there are horrible people who can just judge a person, before getting to know them, but after reading the reviews out here, I see that I am not the only one that have suffer at the behavior of this egotistical rude guy, go visit there, but don’t allow him to mess up your day, here’s a message to the owner if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen, and please fix your cup cake recipes, very, very, dry, and I think it’s a darn shame when your employees can be more professional and nice than you, will never go in there to buy anything again.

Bold City Brewery – Menu with Prices – 2670 Rosselle St #7, Jacksonville

Though not a beer drinker (I’m an oenophile) I’ve been wanting to visit Bold City Taproom. Attended their 10th year anniversary last year and enjoyed my first Bold City Beer. Finally tonight (Thursday) stopped by and ordered the sampler. There were 10 samples plus a Sierra Nevada type. Our host explained each one before tasting & suggested we start with the Killer Whale and end with the Roxy Imperial Seasonal Ale. My favorite was the last one Roxy … must be cause it had the higher alcohol content….hmmm. I liked it so much that ordered a glass. It tasted awesome cold. Aside from the taproom they also had seating in the brewery a few steps away. Our host was extremely helpful when I told her it was my first time in the taproom. She answered all our questions. Pleasant surprise when she gave me a “I kicked a keg” glass & learned that they were changing the keg when I ordered my Roxy. Another surprise my Roxy was free as a 1st timer. Wow my lucky night. Finally, I found a local beer I like. I’m expanding my adult beverage horizon. I’ll be back tomorrow with my 10th yr Bold City Anniversary growlers for more Roxy.

New Mexico Hard Cider Taproom – Menu with Prices – 505 Cerrillos Rd a, Santa Fe

I’m sitting here relaxing outside on a sunny day in Los Angeles. We are brewing and drinking some cider from a cider place about 2 1/2 hours away. They have great cider choices mind you but I can’t stop thinking of the dill pickle cider I had there last October. I luckily was driving back to LA the next day so I drank a few pints and got a 32 ounce growler to take with me so my fiancé could experience this wonderful cider. We drank and loved this cider. They had some other great ciders as well. A tart cherry as I remember. Great space, friendly staff. I miss it and the dill pickle cider. Hands down my favorite cider of all time. Maybe not for everyone but I love pickles and I love this cider. I sadly can’t find anything like it here and anywhere near ( 3 hour journey) me. Sooooo….when is the soonest I can drive there and it will be on tap?

Mastrella’s Irondequolt Steak – Menu with Prices – 4300 Culver Rd, Rochester

I went to see The All Inn Band on a Saturday night, no cover charge. I have also been there before to eat. The food was good and drinks reasonable. When we approached the bar for our first drinks, the bartender was in front if us and we waited for her to finish texting on her phone before she acknowledged us, not very professional. When there is a band the tables from the band area are added to the other tables, it makes it difficult to walk around, very crowded.

Grand Rapids Coffee Roasters – Menu with Prices – Mailbox 8C, 1111 Godfrey Ave SW Ste S-530, Grand Rapids

Coffee purist, owner and former neighbor Craig will tell you to try the coffee before you put cream into it. He got me hooked on drinking my coffee without cream. Now I actually taste the coffee flavors, and let me tell you they can be as complex as any wine. At least one member of my extended family is ‘mildly addicted’ to one of his central American blends, lol – very tasty. They do this thing called the Saturday Experience (from his website: ‘Grand Rapids Coffee Roasters Saturday Experience began as a way to give friends and family members a chance to sample our coffee and blends while we received feedback to improve our roasting and blending skills. As we perfected the process, more and more people came into our shop until one day we decided to open up every Saturday, 10:00am â?? 3:00pm, to the public.’). You really should check it out – it is kind of like going on a wine tour but with coffee – there will be several kinds of coffee brewing for ‘tastings’ so you can really narrow down the kind of coffee you want to buy – pretty fun. They just celebrated their 10th Anniversary there (see picture where we pose with the owner himself). Good people – and kind of a family affair, you will see his wife, and sometimes his parents hanging out and helping (for free coffee I am sure)! They do custom blending for local businesses (there is a Medical Mile Blend served at Spectrum Hospital). Check it out!

Bar XIII Delaware – Menu with Prices – 1706 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington

I don’t really go to bars or drink that often but hubby kept talking about this band he wanted to see so I got tickets for us. It was a Saturday night the band was to start around 9:00 we got there around 8:30. They weren’t busy yet. The guy at the door very friendly and was talking and giving us postcards with upcoming events. I don’t drink beer, wine or drinks with soda and unfortunately there are few drinks I like. I first ask if they do frozen drinks which I kind of already figured they didn’t because most bars like this don’t but figured I try. So I always go for White Russian first bar I have been to that doesn’t serve White Russians. But I will say the bartender was so nice and patient with me making suggestions so finally got a drink with vodka and cranberry juice. I can’t remember the name of it but it was very good. I had two of them. The band was really good but they started about 45 minutes late. The room the band plays in is standing room only. If you want to sit down you have to go to the bar area. And there is a cute little lounge area in the back to hang out in. This is a nice friendly neighborhood bar. I can see why a lot of people go here. They do have a lot of events I would be interested in going to but most are on a Sunday night at 8:00 which is to late for me because Monday morning comes to early. I really want to go to the midget wrestling hope they have one on a Friday or Saturday night.

It Takes the Cake – Menu with Prices – 3018 State St, Erie

Wendy and her husband did an AMAZING job on or cake, down to every last detail, I did not have to worry about anything. They even made the white almond raspberry cake flavor for me even though they are nut free establishment. We had 8 different flavors of cupcakes and I didn’t try all 8 but the 2 flavors I did we’re amazing! I got so many compliments on the cake. The way they incorporate the fruit into the frosting is amazing. Fresh fruit! I was referred to them by a co worker and I was not disappointed. Also if you’re not into the whole save the top layer and freeze it for a year cause I think that’s gross, they make a complimentary anniversary cake on your 1 year anniversary, you just have to call to remind them. I thought that detail was very important because it’s unique.

TreeRock Social Cider & Mead Bar and Patio Menu with Prices 760 Biltmore Ave, Asheville

This is a tough one to review because it is in the category for me of “Did Like, Probably won’t go back”. My wife and I both like cider. They had a bunch of cider and the owner was a great hostess. She opened early when she saw us coming and gave us several samples. She was genuinely excited about cider and so were we. They have a great selection. The reason I say we probably will not return is that it is kind of a novelty place. Not a lot of selection outside of cider. Not a lot of food if any. Really recommend you give it a try. Wasn’t exactly our cup of tea, but it is a nice place with a cool vibe.

Summit House Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 2000 E Bastanchury Rd, Fullerton

I came here with my girlfriend for our anniversary dinner. First impression when you arrive the parking lot is, wow, why are these spots so tight? If you drive a SUV, you will probably take up two spots. Perhaps I am just nitpicking haha But the atmosphere is very nice to be honest, you are on a hillside and with a nice grass area for you to relax and walk around. We made a reservation and the hostess sat us down really quick and she gave us a small little gift which is a card signed by the staffs to congratulate our anniversary. Then, we were greeted by a very nice gentleman and throughout the whole meal, he was tentative and caring. We really appreciated it. For our appetizer, I got a sashimi dish which is a lightly seared tuna side with some salad with an Asian tangy dressing. They also put a thick soy sauce-oyster sauce mixed sauce on the side of the tuna with some wasabi and that sauce was salty, perhaps they could have added some sugar to balance it out. I really liked the salad though because the dressing was delicious. My girlfriend got the French onion soup and she said it was delicious, and it seemed like there was a good balance of cheese and onions. As for the main course, we both got the house prime rib, though she got a smaller size. It was cooked perfectly and just the way we wanted. It came with a side of cream corn and I am glad it wasn’t too heavy to eat. We also got Brussel sprouts on the side and it was super delicious. They used some dried pork and garlic to cook it and it was a mouthwatering experience. The food quality was really good, and the portion was huge. As we were going to order dessert, they brought out these cream puffs with ice cream as our anniversary celebration. It was really sweet, and we really liked the small details they put in to satisfy their guests. The total came out to be $160 without tip which is on the mid to high price side, but I would say you got everything with that price: service, atmosphere, food quality.  Overall, great place for a birthday and anniversary place for celebration. Great customer service and great food quality.

Ben & Jerry’s – Menu with Prices – 3801 Hillsborough St, Raleigh

We visited this place on july 3 around 9:15 pm. After a long tiring day, we decided to enjoy a Ben and Jerry Ice cream. My one year old daughter loves their ice creams. She gets excited and screams with joy while eating their ice-creams. There was a lady who was behind the counter came to my 1 year old daughter’s face and told her “I’LL HAVE TO KICK YOU OUT IF YOU MAKE NOISE” and then says “JUST KIDDING!” This kind of comment was inappropriate. My wife felt very bad and we decided to leave the store that very moment. My wife then cried a lot in the car on the comments which were made. There was nobody else in the store and my daughter was disturbing nobody. Such a rude comment to my baby was not even required. I’ll never go to this place again.
