I was headed north to Kamloops BC for a trout fishing trip with my 28 year old daughter when she announced that she wanted to have lunch at the Aslan Brewery in Bellingham. Since that sounded more exciting than a Tim Horton’s stop in BC I agreed. GREAT DECISION! Decided to try their Bacon Bison Burger at a slightly pricey $15. It proved to be one of the finest and tastiest burgers I have had in years. Absolutely wonderful. A beautiful brioche bun filled with a thick juicy bison patty smothered in delectable arugula. It was so good that when we were returning home 5 days later, we both unhesitatingly agreed to stop for dinner at Aslan. It was 6:00 on a beautiful Sunday evening. The place was was crowded to the gills with trendy Bellinghamites yet the service was prompt and surprisingly quick. Ordered the same incredible Bison burger but this time with sides of salad and Waffle Poutine. The Poutine was almost as delectable as the burger with perfectly fried potato waffles swimming in a mushroom cheese sauce (make that gravy). The burger seemed even better than the first visit. The beer is great too.A great place to eat when you find yourself hungry in Bellingham!!

Hokkai Ramen & Sushi Menu with Prices 4277 Meridian St #C-102, Bellingham

If you’re ever debating where to go in Bellingham for ramen (or really any Japanese food) stop the debate right now, because Hokkai is THE SPOT. Service? Phenomenal, even when they’re busy. Food comes out so fast and everyone who works here is kind and friendly! Atmosphere? Cozy enough to feel homey, roomy enough that you’re not bumping into the people at the next table over. I love the decorations and beautiful wood! And the food. The food!!! It’s delicious and such a good value! What really blows me away is the sushi, the quality of fish for that price?? Amazing. But everything I’ve tried, from ramen to curry, has always been delicious. Being from Hawaii, I grew up with a lot of Japanese food and ramen is one of my favorite meals. Hokkai is the only place in Bellingham that I trust and recommend to everyone I know.

Gatherings Cafe – Menu with Prices – 1530 E Franklin Ave, Minneapolis

I love Gatherings Cafe! I have had both their catering and their in house menu. I crave their bison veggie soup in the winter. It’s the perfect to side to any of their amazing sandwiches. Their bison melt is truly something to write home about – a perfectly toasted whole grain bread, topped with the most tender, perfectly seasoned, slow braised bison, a melty cheese and then a mouthwatering blueberry horseradish sauce. The sauce isn’t overpowering, but the perfect compliment to the cheese and bison. The sandwich is HUGE – if you’re ordering a salad or soup, consider sharing. And its only $8.50.

Rocky’s Burgers – Menu with Prices – 1235 26 Ave SE, Calgary

Stopped by this afternoon, and grabbed myself the bacon cheeseburger, and they’re poutine! The burger was phenomenal, huge think juicy patty that was delightful to eat, fresh bun aswell as fresh toppings! Loved the thick cut bacon slices! All and in this was one of my favorite burgers! The poutine was mindblowing, exceptional gravy, that complimented the cheese curds and perfectly cooked and cut fries! The owners where lovely folks, who we had great conversations with! 10/10 will be back for more burgers and chats In the future!

Omega Drive-In – Menu with Prices – 309 W Chapman Ave, Orange

Surprisingly good – and filling – food! We’ve walked by Omega countless times, strolling from Chapman into Old Orange in search of food, always commenting on how good the charred meat smells, but never stopping in. But, on one of our latest visits, we were too lazy to go for our normal stroll (and, honestly, I was unwilling to eat at the same places again), so we decided to give Omega a shot. On our way into the restaurant, a nice older gentleman stopped us to regale us with stories of their chicken dinner special – the flavors, the cost, the sides. He was so intent on sharing all the good news with us that we didn’t actually set foot inside the restaurant for another five minutes. Once inside, we really got a sense as to how long this place has been in business. If the owners were to send a note to their customers saying they’d be shutting down for a quick remodel, could you blame them? The menu board is straight out of the mid- to late-70s. The decor isn’t too far behind. But, the food, as I mentioned above, was surprisingly delicious. My husband got the Omega Burger, and added bacon. I got the Gyro combo (who goes to a burger joint and orders a gyro? THIS GIRL!) We got our food to go, so we could take it back to Chapman. We had beers to drink, after all. The gyro sandwich was packed full of juicy, flavorful meat. The tzatziki was equal parts creamy and chunky, with a nice – but not overpowering – dilly/tarty bite. My husband was making yummy noises over his burger, and in between bites and mmm’s, he repeatedly shared how happy he was in his decision to get a single burger, instead of the double he’d contemplated. Cuz, you know – the single was an extra-large burger on its own, and his combo came with fries and a drink (as did the gyro combo, by the way). So – on our next stop at Chapman, we decided to forgo their food truck in favor of Omega once again. This time the restaurant was full to bursting (the Old Towne Orange festival was on at the same time), but the food still came out quickly enough. And yes, this time, my husband did end up getting the double cheeseburger, no bacon, and no sides. He was able to finish it – barely – and was stuffed for days afterwards. Me? I got the gyro again, and though the pita was a bit crispier and the meat a bit dryer, it still filled the void.

The American Poutine Co. – Menu with Prices – 1395 E Warner Rd Suite 100, Gilbert

Let me preface this review by saying I am Canadian AF and if you cut me open I’d probably bleed cheese curds and poutine gravy. Finally got to try American Poutine Co by catching them at Gilbert Feastival. I was super excited because I love that they’ve brought poutine, a dirty Canadian staple, to the desert. Unfortunately have a few critiques on their poutine which ultimately missed the mark for me! Poutine is pretty much a delicious SLOP of fries, drowning in gravy with cheese curds that are squeaky bouncy fresh, yet also softened from the piping hot gravy. For me there just wasn’t enough gravy. Next, it wasn’t hot enough to adequately soften the fries OR cheese curds. Overall, this made the texture of the whole thing all wrong – as it was too crispy and dry, cheese curds were cold and hard, and there were a lot of uncoated, hard fries at the bottom. I’m not sure if they choose to make it this way since a sloppy slightly-mushy poutine isn’t maybe what Americans customers think they want. But that’s what makes real poutine amazing – it’s a sloppy dirty mess of deliciousness and when you get down to the bottom of the tub the fries should still be sitting in gravy! Maybe next time I could ask for extra – but I’m still glad American Poutine Co exists, and I would definitely give em another shot to try and win this canadian glutton’s heart.

Leopold’s Tavern Winnipeg Osborne – Menu with Prices – 696 Osborne St, Winnipeg

+.5 for service This place has an amazing breakfast selection. At least, that’s all I had here so far, but looking at options such as a bucket of bacon, I definitely believe there’s a lot to offer here. Their breakfast club menu has lots of wonderful choices including chicken and waffles and the hangover cure. I went with the breakfast club brekkie with bacon and poutine. Needless to say I’m glad I went with their bacon. It really deserves the hype it does! I attended a friend’s wedding at the Park Theatre beside the restaurant last year, and Leopold’s served them a bucket of bacon since they mentioned how they love bacon so much. It was great then and it’s still great today. The eggs were prepared well and the poutine was worth the $2.50 extra given the portion size (huge!). Service was excellent and the servers were very efficient with their work here. I’d definitely return to try their dinner menu, or have a night at a South Osborne bar.

London Burgers – Menu with Prices – 471 Dundas St, London

I went to H. B. Beal for high school and I think I’m speaking on behalf of all the Beal and CCH kids when I say that London Burger is the reason why we stayed at our schools XD Seriously though, this place is awesome. The food is delicious and honestly it tastes quite “upper class” for fast food. They serve a ton of stuff including burgers, wraps, fries, poutine, and milkshakes. Some of the high schoolers’ favourites include $5 small poutine (after tax), Jr. burger ($4.50) and my personal favourite: gyro ($5.49 before tax). OMG their gyros are so amazing! For those of you who don’t know what a gyro is, it is a traditional Greek dish that uses slices of beef and lamb wrapped in a pita with added tzatziki sauce, tomatoes and onions. London Burger makes the best gyros ? you gotta try it. Some tips: 1. If you go during high school lunch hours (Monday to Friday, September to June, 11am-12:30pm ish), be prepared for a half an hour wait. I’m not kidding, I once waited in line for 37 minutes. 2. They offer 3 types of burgers: London Burger (biggest patty, most expensive), hamburger (smaller patty, cheaper), Junior burger (smallest patty, cheapest). The buns are all the same size and truth be told, (personal opinion), the hamburger and Jr burger taste the same. So to save some money, get the Jr. burger unless you’re super hungry, then get the London Burger for $7. 3. They offer enough seating in the little restaurant but during busy hours, all the seats will be full, so be prepared to take your food on the go. I graduated from Beal last year and I must admit, I miss London Burger terribly. Every time I go back to visit friends, I always make a trip down memory lane and pay a visit to London Burger and get myself one of those gyros. The service is friendly, the restaurant is family owned, and they offer great breakfast before 10:30am and all-day-breakfast on Saturdays! So give this place a try and TRY THEIR GYROS! ?

Glory Days Grill – Menu with Prices – 8253 Cooper Creek Blvd, Bradenton

We went for the first time with another couple. It was hit or miss. Our friends didn’t like their choices of bison burger or the fried shrimp. We also got a large order of the boneless wings for an app. They were supposed to be dry rub seasoned. They were nothing more than regular fried chicken nuggets. I had the Monte Cristo sandwich which was very over priced. It has much to much batter with very little sliced ham and swis. My husband liked his Glory cheese burger. It was cooked to order. Onion rings were just so -so and not very crispy. The highlight is the Margarita. It is huge and at $5, it is a definite bargain. All in all it is a sports bar and seems like a great place to watch a game and have drinks, but food is nothing special.

Smokey’s Neighborhood Grill – Menu with Prices – 501 E Bangs Ave, Modesto

Oh my gosh..best burger ever..best tomato deep red flavorful like he grew it…sweet red onion you could eat all by itself…out of all the pickles, Mike chose the best tasting ones..dark green lettuce leaf plus top quality cheese and meat with his special sauce. And the bacon could not have been better…no kidding. This burger was golden! (It was $10.95) The one we had today was smokey’s special burger. The fries were absolutely perfect too..golden brown and crunchy . ..plus he’s open later now. He still closed at 3 a couple of days..i think mon and Tues.. The dinner menu and special looked so good too–steak sandwich with mushrooms onions and more. Bottom line is Mike knows food. We used to eat at his burger shop on Coffee rd.25 years ago and also his steak roadhouse by the mall. There are other good burgers in modesto, but every bite Mike serves is perfection. He also had some tasty looking sandwiches if you’re in the mood. Just to be thorough here- Inside is modern, every table beautifully set with high quality napkins and glass over the tablecloth..a condiment holder for salt pepper..bathrooms decorated farmhouse style..everything spic and span..even the doors and parking lot which is right out front off the street. There are lots of fancy cookies, and desserts including cobblers with optional ice cream. I wanted those! I’m pretty sure they were delectable..but I’m trying to stay alive so..maybe next time. After all these years smoke still remembered us. That was the high note!

MOR Bakery and Cafe – Menu with Prices – 2018 S 1st St #102, Milwaukee

I had such high hopes (and sure, expectations), after seeing MOR previewed in Wisco Foodie. I am a staunch advocate for local over chains and want the little guy to succeed. MOR has the location just right. Perfectly designed and sighted on the lot, the windows and expansive porch are inviting and suited for the long range growth this block will experience. Said simply, it’s a cool locale and a cool place. Any business at this prime spot is primed for success. Now the less than stellar parts: the experience of a quick grab and go of hopefully delectable delights was a miss. At 7am in the morning, I’d expect prompt, organized if not maybe a little frenetic level of service. What I was greeted with was an odd dance between three staff members, none knowing quite who was going to do what. It shouldn’t take 5 minutes to figure out how to ring up three pieces of bakery. But it did. Perhaps less forgivable is the one-two knockout miss of a nearly $5 diminutive piece of cheesecake bar and same priced carrot cake cupcake that were both ho hum. For these prices, I expect a mouth watering experience. I was unfortunately underwhelmed. The highlight, beyond the well done interior and exterior presentation, was the reasonably priced and well executed brownie. Moist, chocolatey goodness. Without this high point, I’d probably not consider a repeat visit. I’m sure I’ll stop back in a few months to see what’s transpired. Maybe an off day on my stop. It’s hard to imagine the concept not thriving in such a future proofed location. I’m hopeful and eager for MOR In the future.

Jackson’s Corner Menu with Prices 1500 NE Cushing Dr #100, Bend

Wanted to try something different from our normal jaunts for breakfast and landed here. We expected it to be busy because of the Easter Holiday and were pleasantly surprised to see multiple open tables both inside and out (as we’ve seen this place packed to the gills on other occasions). We ordered a breakfast Sammy (just egg, sausage and cheese on a sweet bun) and a brunch burger (basically the same as above with burger instead of sausage and lots of sauce). We each ordered a kombucha and sat to wait for our food. The wait was unexpectedly long for what I perceived as a pretty low maintenance order (25 mins) and that was for the first sandwich! The burger came out another 5 mins later. The food was good but underwhelming for the cost. We paid 43 bucks for those 4 items (including tip) and my sandwich didn’t even come with a side! I’ve heard great things about this place. The space is really cool. The lunch items looked impressive. Maybe they were just off their game today.

Taco Fundacion – Menu with Prices – 235 N Guadalupe St, Santa Fe

Best. Tacos. Ever. We went to Taco Fundación on several of the days we were in town for a few reasons: scrumptious tacos, fast service, cheap prices, and fresh ingredients. How can it get better than that?! They have tons of types to choose from, but I tried the following: barbacoa, al pastor, chicken mole, and bison. The barbacoa proved to be a favorite, as I made sure to get at least one each time I went. It’s perfectly moist, acidic, sweet, and spicy. The al pastor has a good flavor and they make sure to give you several pieces of roasted pineapple, which is what I love to see from an al pastor taco! I did find the al pastor to be a bit dry, though. The chicken mole is probably delicious if you like mole, but it was my first time trying it and I just wasn’t a huge fan of the sauce. That being said, the chicken is super tender and pulled to perfect size. The bison taco, which I got on the recommendation of a super friendly employee, and it was seriously great. It was really moist and had the perfect balance of flavors, especially given the creamy cheese and the sweet roasted corn. They also have a few sides, like corn and chips and guacamole, but I was all about the tacos. Do yourself a favor and go to Taco Fundación ASAP! And then do yourself another favor and go again… and again… and again.
