Well, my girlfriends and I always love a good dessert, and when we saw the display earlier in the day the Woods Coffee employee gave us the scoop and said you have to try her desserts. We have our usual favorites in town for certain things, but I do think Bellingham can always use a great little dessert spot that offers up a variety of items beyond just cupcakes/cake. Amidst the decor of warm woods and white cake stands is a variety of impressive desserts. Our selection for the day included peanut butter pie, a chocolate torte with a berry sauce, carrot cake, a gluten free polenta cake, porter chocolate coconut caramel, white cupcakes with raspberry and a tequila frosting I think, and mascarpone chocolate chip cookie sandwiches, among other things. What I love are the unique flavor combinations: cardamom, porter, sea salt, candied orange, mascarpone….these desserts are definitely elevated beyond your typical fare. I opted for the cupcake and chocolate cake. The cupcake was dense and moist, just the way I like cake. The tart raspberry balanced lovely with the sweet frosting. The chocolate cake was phenomenal. A lighter cake in crumb texture but rich in chocolate flavor and superbly moist. The coconut flavor in the frosting resonated but didn’t overpower and the toasted coconut on the exterior added a great textural element. The porter was pronounced, with that coffee richness I associate with those beers. The caramel was rich and delicious. Overall everyone in my group raved about their desserts, and we are so happy to have a unique delicious option in downtown and close to work. Check it out!

The Sweets Life by Liza – Menu with Prices – 20371 Bluffside Cir, Huntington Beach

WOW! These cupcakes are nothing short of orgasmic. I’m talking cream-your-pants good! I first had these at the Pageant of the Masters season opener VIP party in July and I figured they’d be good but wow, they really got my attention. I don’t know how Liza did it but these perfectly moist and fluffy cupcakes were topped with just the right amount of frosting to create something rich without being too rich, and sweet without being too sweet. The frosting reminded me of the buttercream frosting my mom used to make – real butter and just the right amount of sweetness. The cake was moist and fluffy without falling apart like some I’ve had. So a couple months later I was had family visiting and ordered 2 dozen of 4 different flavors. They were even better than I remembered. Rich chocolate flavor, nice bright pear flavor with spiced cake, and the salted caramel frosting… my absolute favorite! And to add icing on the cake (haha, you like how I snuck that in?) I got two extra cupcakes as a surprise, made to look like… wait for it… POOP EMOJI! They were cute, hilarious looking, and downright delicious. (see pics) All in all, these cupcakes aren’t cheap but they’re worth every penny. I won’t be ordering these every month (gotta keep my boyish figure) but for special occasions these are the perfect treat.

Sweet City Cupcakes – Menu with Prices – 233 W King St Suite A, St. Augustine

This quaint little shop is absolutely cute with its cool retro decor and the owner Dana is super sweet and thorough with the explanation of each flavor and services provided. The real test came from the little one. Now, she typically just eats the frosting and never eat the cake at all. She chose the double chocolate I believe with all the cool colors for frosting that will of course attract a kids eye lol. I was thinking, “great, she’s just going to eat the frosting and toss the cake”. She devoured it! My husband had the Coconut creme pie. He said it was really good. I had the vegan pineapple upside down. I was extremely skeptical of this being vegan option desserts tend to not be so good. Well, it was DELICIOUS! We also took home the Marilyn, carrot cake and salted caramel. All were delicious! I’m not a fan of strawberry flavored desserts, but Dana insisted that I try one and I’m glad I did. All of the cupcakes were nice and moist, even the next day! This business also does wedding cakes, bday cakes, holiday, etc. Sweet City will not disappoint you.

Nancy Jo’s Homemade of Raleigh – Menu with Prices – 1201 Agriculture St, Raleigh

With so many taste options at the Raleigh Farmer’s Market its hard to stand out but Nancy Jo’s makes some seriously yummy cakes and cupcakes. I have tried the caramel cake & cupcakes, red velvet cupcakes, strawberry cake and pig picking cake & cupcakes. The “cakes” are usually a half of a cake – which is actually a decent serving option most of the time but there are usually a few whole cakes available. If you have something in particular you want in mind, I would suggest giving them a call. They are always happy to place something on hold for you and if you give them a heads up they can even make sure its available the day you want to come pick it up. It is a little pricey, sometimes almost $40 for a cake but man are they good! The cupcakes are HUGE too – there are 4 in a box but I can assure you one will fill you. The cake is soft and airy and very moist but by no means wet. I had never heard of a “pig picking cake” before but the description sounded good – orange cake with pineapple frosting. You might expect it to taste like a super sugary pina colada; however, it is rather magical. Again, the cake is light and moist but doesn’t taste especially like oranges (or at least I can’t taste it). The frosting is whipped and fresh with taste little flecks of pineapple. I have taken this cake and cupcakes to several parties – people gobble it up, moaning with each bite. I didn’t personally eat the red velvet cupcakes (I’m not a fan of cream cheese) but my sister ,who is a red velvet fanatic, told me they were excellent. The caramel and strawberry cakes were just what you expect – and I mean that in the best way possible. Wonderful vanilla cake with obviously homemade caramel frosting and strawberry cake with strawberry frosting. I’m more of a fan of caramel but I assure you I sampled the strawberry and wasn’t disappointed. The people are incredibly helpful too! I’ve called more than once with requests and last minute begging for them to put something aside while I race there to pick it up before they close. They are accommodating in every way. Next time you have a BBQ or dinner party and you don’t feel like baking – do yourself a serious favor and go pick up a cake. It will be better than anything you would have thrown together and everyone will be asking for the recipe.

Dolce&Amaro Italian Artisan Bakery – Menu with Prices – 1310 Westover Terrace #110, Greensboro

It’s about time there was a true bakery in town that served something other than cupcakes, cake, and brownies. This bakery is very reminiscent of the European bakeries I’ve had the privilege of visiting. The display cases are beautifully set up, with a clean and simple look. They have larger desserts to share (or totally indulge in for yourself), and smaller desserts if you want to try more than one thing (or you’re on a diet, which I am not). My sister and I opted to try several desserts- the chocolate coconut cake, the triple chocolate cake, fruit tart, and the Marilyn (a white chocolate raspberry dessert). Right after we ordered, the pastry chef brought out a freshly baked tray of doughnuts filled with Nutella. They looked and smelled amazing! All of the desserts were really good. I’m a sucker for a fruit tart and this one was on point. The crust was just right with a rich buttery flavor. I would have liked a tad more custard, but the flavor overall was super yummy. The coconut and triple chocolate desserts were both good as well. I wasn’t as big of a fan of the Marilyn but it didn’t go to waste at our table either. To my surprise, the pastry chef shared one of the Nutella doughnuts with us and it was doughnut heaven. Tuesday is “two lattes for $5” day and they also did not disappoint. Eventually I’d like to go back and try their macarons, because I judge all bakers by those little bite size pieces of heaven.

Couture Cakes By Nika – Menu with Prices – 10373 Warwick Blvd, Newport News

This is the best bakery to grace the Earth! (I still don’t understand why people would go anywhere else in Newport News) Maple Bacon Cupcakes Ok my review is done. LOL! Ive grown up around amazing bakeries, I even grew up with Amish and Mennonite bake businesses. Living in Va Beach, I am near some fine bakeries but still only go to one…..25 minutes away and across a bridge tunnel and that is this fine shop by Nika. Many places will make cupcakes or cakes and call it something due to the frosting having that flavor. But Nika goes above and beyond making both the frosting and cake go with the intended flavor. Where a run of the mill business will have a Key Lime cupcake with only the frosting adhering to the flavor and the cake being a generic white cake; Nika will have a key lime frosting and cake with lime or graham crumble. Want something unique? Try her Lavender cupcake. Want to die by chocolate, get the Chocolate Overload with some actual chocolate bar on top. Have a cheat day with the amazing Peanut Butter fudge. Or want the recipe Oreo is seeking, have her cookies and cream cake……Hell, have them all there isn’t one you’d go wrong with. The cupcakes are the tip of the iceberg. She is an artist, bakes cakes, cookies and anything else…… Finally, we had her do our wedding. My god the almond cake melted in your mouth. The crowd went gaga over her cake and were more than happy to take some cupcakes home. And after a year of being frozen until our anniversary it was still an amazing bite. If you want to be the toast of your party….just get 2 dozen different cupcakes and you’ll be welcomed back! MAPLE BACON CUPCAKE!!!!!!!!

Cupcake Cutie Etc. – Menu with Prices – Court Square, 109 S Ct Ave, Memphis

We end up coming here pretty often. The owners are great and very friendly and I appreciate that they let me use their bathroom. This place specializes in build-your-own cupcakes. You can mix and match any base flavor with any cream and top it with a number of fun toppings. My favorite base is the strawberry one and the pineapple one because they have little bits of their respective fruit mixed into the batter and it’s always a delight when I get a bite of one. I’ve tried a bunch of random combinations but my favorite thing to do is to ask them what they think goes well with what I’ve chosen. Sometimes it works out and sometimes I have to adjust it later but I usually leave with an awesome cupcake that is at least enjoyable, even if not my all-time favorite. They are also very accommodating here. They will add sparkles, color, and chocolate or caramel syrup for free. The sparkles are really popular with the people I have brought with me to visit. The large comes with one free topping, otherwise all toppings are .50 each. They have a rack to the side of discount cupcakes you can buy. They’re on sale because they were made the previous day. I usually check what they have there first. Oh, don’t forget to come in on your birthday for a free cupcake! Molly’s Cupcakes – Menu with Prices – 215 E 3rd St, Des Moines

Truly great cupcakes!! My daughter will tell you that I am pretty picky about cake in general and I am not much of a fan of cupcakes for the simple reason that the cake is often dry and tasteless and one must eat quantities of the frosting to get any flavor. Not so with Molly’s! Their cake batter is like a moist sponge batter that has lovely flavor all on its own ( think rich, like eggs and vanilla) and perfectly supports the fillings and frostings. Yes, I said fillings! Every cupcake is filled with a core of amazingness! And it isn’t frosting. It’s a filling that complements the frosting. So you get three flavors in one place, which all work together to make a wonderful taste sensation! There went my diet! We tried six different cupcakes and all were just excellent! The decor in Molly’s is quite original. Think industrial, plus fun, kid friendly and community gathering spot. There’s a bar that goes around the front counter where you can sit on swings ( yes, fun swings!) and watch them fill and frost cupcakes. Tables, chairs and benches line the exposed brick walls of the old warehouse building and there is a stack of board games to encourage patrons to stay and play. Wonderful concept with fabulous cupcakes in exceptional flavors! Well done, Molly’s! I’ll be back!

Cakes & Pastries By George – Menu with Prices – 3674 Muddy Creek Rd, Cincinnati

I, as other family members, have been going to Cakes & Pastries by George for a variety of cakes and greek pastries over the years. Even though we live an hour away it is so worth it. I even travelled to his shop one winter with 4 inches of snow on the highway. Long trip but enjoyed cupcakes on the way home. Never once has any item from George not been beyond delicious. From regular cakes to birthday cakes and cupcakes and the greek pastries. The cakes are moist and fluffy. The filling and icing are fresh and never to sweet. The cupcakes are just as wonderful as the cakes. Though I wish I had a bigger mouth and stomach. Even though Georges items are beyond wonderful I am actually writing this review about the cake that we got for my sisters birthday. It was a white cake with raspberry filling. It was amazing. Beyond amazing. The cake was moist and light, the raspberry filling was just sweet enough to be a perfect blend with the white icing, cake and white chocolate shavings. Each part on its own was salivating awesome and together was a dream. The only issue that I could say was there were to many people sharing cake because I really really wanted more. If your looking for cakes and pastries I highly recommend you try Cake and Pastries by George. Your stomach will thank you.

Magpies Cakes – Menu with Prices – 846 N Central St, Knoxville

I’m a little late with this review but the cupcakes are great and deserve their props. My boyfriend is a pie man and I’m a cake girl so he stopped by Magpies and got me some cupcakes like a sweetheart one weekend. He got Chocolate Caramel, Chocolate Fudge, Red Velvet, Chocolate Mocha, Just About Decadent, Carmel Macchiato, Lemon Raspberry and Strawberry Cream. He got a dozen which can run from $22-32 depending on what you choose. They have a menu on their website with prices. I think it’s pricy but I am self-admittedly frugal so you might think differently. I have to say that the cupcakes were absolutely amazing, though. I am a chocolate person so I just knew that any of the chocolate ones would be my favorites. My fave was the Red Velvet! It was incredible. The icing was perfect and just made it that much better. The Chocolate Mocha surprised me because I am not a coffee person but it was very good as well as the Carmel Macchiato. Now, don’t get me wrong…the Chocolate Fudge, Chocolate Caramel and Just About Decadent cupcakes were fantastic…but the Red Velvet won me over in a shocking and surprising kind of way. Overall, they were amazing and if you have a special occasion then definitely splurge and go to Magpies. Actually, if you just need to make your day brighter, stop in for a single cupcake. It’s definitely worth it and “all butter all the time” is the way to go. Also, guys (and girls), if you want to make your significant other happy or if you’re in the doghouse…get them a treat from Magpies! Trust me, they will love you a little extra.

Baby Bite Bake Shop – Menu with Prices – 975 Airport Rd SW, Huntsville

Brought home 9 baby bites for my mom’s birthday and we really enjoyed them! The cakes were overwhelmingly moist and tasty. The shop is very tiny, located in the big shopping center on Airport with Stein Mart, Metro Diner, and Surin of Thailand. Similar to Nothing Bundt Cakes down the road, there’s no room to sit and eat inside the place – it is mostly for carry out and catering/events. The baby bites are super cute and the perfect mouthful, so they’d be great for a wedding or baby shower or even a tailgate party. The shop is new and decorations are sparse so far, but it’s still a cute little place with bright colors and friendly employees. Bites are a little over a dollar each but can also be bought in sets of three, starting with a 6 pack. E.g. a 6, 9, 12, or 15 pack. Some flavors are available every day, some only on certain days. Here’s my breakdown of all the flavors I tried, in order from most favorite to least favorite: 1. The marble flavor. Deliciously moist chocolate cake with sweet – but not overpowering – chocolate icing. The vanilla crumbs really bring out the chocolatey flavor. 2. Coconut! These adorable little cakes look like snowballs. They’re covered with shredded coconut, which I loved. 3. Chocolate espresso. This flavor is only available on select days – I got it on Tuesday. It is VERY strongly coffee flavored, so avoid if that’s not your thing! I like all coffee flavored desserts, though, so I really enjoyed this cake. The icing was a little thick, but I enjoyed the contrasting chocolate and coffee tastes. 4. Red velvet. Supposedly their most popular flavor, this was a fine example of red velvet cake. The icing wasn’t too overpowering and the chocolate flavor of the red velvet came through nice and strong. 5. The turtle flavor. Another daily special flavor. I was hoping this would be my favorite, but it left a little to be desired. Although I enjoyed the cake, I thought the caramel drizzle made it a bit too sweet. I also really wanted more pecans – there was only a small crumble on top of the cake. This was also the only cake bite that I thought was a little on the dry side. 6. My least favorite was the caramel flavor. Unsurprising – I found it too sweet, like most caramel cakes. Still, the aftertaste was pleasant enough, and I’d be willing to eat it again if offered – however, I probably wouldn’t order it again. I’m not sure of their catering prices, but Baby Bite cakes sure are adorable and yummy! I’ll be keeping them in mind for any future events I may be hosting. ?

17 Hands Coffee – Menu with Prices – 1830 Kempsville Rd #104, Virginia Beach

While my family was visiting Virginia Beach we wanted to grab a coffee close to our hotel but wanted to avoid the big Seattle chain if we could. We looked for some local businesses and most of them were closed on Sundays. Odd. Well, 17 Hands was open and just around the corner so away we went. The AC was out so they about to close up but we managed to get our coffee. I got a nitro cold brew and it was wayyyy to strong for my liking. I drank it because I paid for it, it wasn’t bad, just too strong for me. My wife ordered a raspberry something, white chocolate maybe… not entirely sure. It was really good either way. The next day we stopped in before hitting the road and I ordered a peppermint mocha which was very nice. Next time I’m in the area I will get an extra pump of peppermint. My wife went with her raspberry whatever and again was very happy. Our daughter got an iced caramel with an extra pump of caramel and she was happy. My son wanted a fruit cup so we grabbed him one, but we also grabbed a savory ham and cheese scone, a chocolate chip scone, and a slice of chocolate cake with mint frosting. Cake, incredible. Very moist and the icing was delicious without being overly sweet. The savory scone is still sweet. It is delicious, but sweeter than I would like for savory… but I still ordered another one so clearly it was good. From what I could tell, the baked good are fantastic! I also grabbed a small bag of whole bean Colombian coffee, and the decaf Colombian. Both of which make very nice pour-over coffee at home. We also grabbed a coffee and a couple of scones for our friend down the road. She was very happy. The staff here is great. The owner is super friendly and has a great crew. I really hope this place does well.
